Why did I choose a Jetboil Zip after using a Jetboil Flash (or whatever it was called back then) for 13 years?! There's so many options out there. Lighter ones, cheaper ones... In this video I explain why this is my gas stove for hiking of choice and what I need a gas burner to do for me.

Well said, that totally makes sense. Jetboils are also issued to US Special Forces for the same reason and there are a million things they could be issued with. They get the best stuff that works and money is never an issue. Am considering one for ultralight mountain adventures where I’d be boiling water not cooking.. thanks for this…

Great review! I started with the jetboil zip. I love it and still use it. I've since gotten the minimo and stash. The minimo is such an over kill but I love it. For saving weight the stash is my go to. Liked and subbed

I have had my Jetboil Zip for around 7 years and never let me down. So compact and not actually that heavy. I recently have invested in the pot stand, coffee press and skillet. Game changer. Please check out my latest video which reviews these with the ZIP. Jetboil is a great system 👍🏼

Almost bought the Flash Java (the normal Flash was sold out) but saw the Zip and figured that I really didn't need the larger container of the Flash (and I'd rather just use instant coffee instead of screwing around with beans/straining anyway) and saved myself $35 USD or so getting the Zip. I didn't realize the Zip lacks a push button ignition until I got it home, but it's relieving to hear that even seasoned backpackers sometimes prefer to just carry a starter with them instead of using one on the burner itself. I'll probably get a flint like yours and carry a lighter as a backup! Thanks for the review.

Thanks for reaching out Brenda! I'm pleasantly surprised to see how my ad hoc honest video has reached this many people, with dozens more every day. I'm still very much active in outdoor recreation and would be happy to demonstrate trying out your products from a user's point of view. Feel free to reach out to me if this is something you're interested in. 😀

Absolutely great video, very informative 👍. What is the brand of fire starter you were using in the video? I wanted the push button starter until i watched your video, manual is smarter. Oh an i subscribed to your channel 👍

I broke my Flash igniter because I loaded things in the wrong order so used it for several years without it. I just needed to get used to the smell of singed hair while lighting it with a small lighter.

why is zip so much cheaper than other jetboils?

Dieter, what about the myth that Jetboil only boils water, nothing else ? So no preparing food 'in' the pot ? That's how I always understood, but on their website I see them juggling with all kinds of recipes ...

The zip is unregulated so it’s either on or off. The regulator versions are much more expensive but you can turn the flame down to a heat more suitable to cook at a low temp for longer times. Low and slow so food doesn’t just burn.

I'm currently looking for a replacement for my also 13 year old jetboil. If you could just get the burner instead of the whole system what do you think about that or should I just breakdown and get the new smaller kit? Like you, I only use it for boiling water and start it with a lighter. Great review

If you are looking to boil, the Flash and Zip would be your best Jetboil options. If you are looking to step it up, check out the MinoMo, MicroMo, Sumo or MightyMo systems. Each of these systems have the same "Mo" burner and the only difference between them is the cup size. This series will simmer making any recipe possible. You can purchase a burner on its own and use it with a pot support or use any of the Jetboil cooking cups as all of the cups are compatible with the burners. I hope this helps! - Brenda

I’ve always chuckled at jet boils. People heating hot water just to reconstitute dehydrated PROCESSED “food.” That’s not enjoying a meal out in the woods in my opinion. It’s why I use white gas and a frying pan to actually COOK food. With the jet boil, it’s too hot and too fast to cook real fresh food.

You might try it sometime, before pre-judging. The JetBoil Zip only sometimes goes out backpacking with me, but it almost always goes out when weight is only a minor issue. It makes it so easy to boil water for a cup of tea or coffee to drink while I'm getting the rest of breakfast ready on a classic two burner green Coleman propane stove heating up a cast iron pan. I still have two Whisperlites (regular and International w/ diesel and kero jets) and a Dragonfly, rarely used now. All of my other liquid fuel equipment has been abandoned to time (and friends). The extra work and danger of white gas stoves isn't usually what I'm looking for. I liked the ritual of pumping up the tank and pre-heating the generator, but I've had the experience of near-disaster flare-ups and once a run-away Svea 123 turning into a fireball then shooting flame from the pressure relief.

Most people don't use a jetboil in the woods, and if you are going to cook real food on a jetboil you simply get the Minimo which has adjustable flame control

@@markbailey15 I like the MSR Whisperlite stove over jetboil, as it allows for a nice cast iron pan to rest atop of it.

I've always chuckled at people who just use a frying pan while undertaking a healthy activity. Fry you die right? And the hassle of white gas? Go the Trangia route, boil, steam AND fry :)
