I moved to Mexico this year and I regret I didn't do it sooner. I feel 100% safer than I did in the US, the culture and the people are very friendly and welcoming, and I can create my own career here. As a Mexican who has lived in various countries and also a Canadian citizenship holder, there is no place like Mexico in terms of people’s warmth and service, like Andrew rightfully pointed out. Each State is its own “mini-country” of its own due to its vast heritage of different cultures and geographical landscapes. But the warmth and friendship is shared all across. Not to mention the food, it’s just staple wherever you go. And safety? Well, like any country you find issues but overall I feel now safer here in CDMX than in Vancouver... I’ve met people from all over the world living here. Will spend the other 4-6 months visiting friends and family in the US as well as traveling to other countries. Living really well on $3000 us a month but will be moving to a smaller house soon and will be at $2300 - $2500.

as a 1st generation american-american (first EVER in my family), i aqcuired my dual citizenship & moved to mexico a few years ago, and i have to say.. it was THE BEST decision i've ever made in my life. yes, even though i do speak spanish, and have been to mexico many times in the past throughout my life, i still had to assimilate. that being said, my quality of life is 10x better. people are MUCH friendlier, funnier, women are much better partners, food - i don't even have to say anything, the culture, music, parties, public transportation, extremely low cost and accessibility to medication and/or doctors. the list goes on FOREVER. i can safely say i will be spending the rest of my life here. i am lucky to have mexican heritage, and it truly made it easier to assimilate, integrate, and be well received by my mexican folks. in america, being a proud mexican is looked down upon by full-blooded americans. in mexico, EVERYONE is a proud mexican. VIVA MEXICO!!!

What kind of retirement can you have there if you have a $500,000 nest egg saved, and don't want to work anymore? That would be about a $33,000 yearly income if I just lived off of those savings plus my social security.
@Ragis11 ай бұрын
@@KP99that will put you squarely in the top 10% of yearly income among Mexicans. You don’t need to work and you’ll never feel budget-constrained for a decent, normal life. Maybe you’ll need more income for luxury, though.
@kckc995511 ай бұрын
@@KP99 Depends where you go and what quality of life you want, and how many people you're supporting. 33k per year is nearly 3 grand a month. I've seen 4 bedroom houses, renovated, modern m, in decent neighborhoods renting for less than $1000 a month. You could live pretty well in that income.
@KP9911 ай бұрын
@@kckc9955 I'm actually single in my late 40s, so I'd just be supporting myself. Unless I meet a nice girl while I'm there, then maybe I'd have a girlfriend to treat once in awhile too LOL. I'd probably never get married though, so for now let's just say I'm supporting myself only. What you say sounds great, a 4 BR place would give me lots of space, and under $1000 is awesome. You say in "decent" neighborhoods. Honestly the only thing holding me back from moving to MX is worries about safety, especially if criminals target people who seem like foreigners/Americans. I'm browned skinned, so visually I don't think I'd stand out, but speaking English like an American would be an obvious clue. I took 4 years of Spanish 30 yrs ago in high school, so I speak it a little, maybe on a scale of 1 to 10, I speak at about a 4. But I could learn more since I already have a good foundation. So are the neighborhoods I could live in on that income places where I would have to worry about safety? Also, could I live in a "desireable" beach/resort type area on that income, or in a nice area of a big city like Guad, Monteray, or CDMX, or would it have to be in more of a smaller town in the interior where there may not be as many things to do?
@kckc995511 ай бұрын
@@KP99 If you're in a popular tourist beach town the rents will generally be higher. If you're living there permanently, maybe have a real estate agent find you a place and negotiate on your behalf to avoid being charged gringo prices. Or, do some market research and have a good grasp of what the local market values actually are so you don't get overcharged. Facebook marketplace is useful for seeing what local Mexicans would be paying. Having your Spanish up to at least an intermediate conversational level is highly advantageous, and frankly it's a requirement if you don't want to be exploited. It will also increase your quality of life since relatively few Mexicans speak much English. You can get by on the basics, but I'd recommend learning the language. You'd be surprised how far you can advance in a few months or a year. As far as safety, you shouldn't have much of a concern in general. Certain places can be riskier, like some neighborhoods in Mexico City for instance. As long as you're not walking around wearing expensive jewelry and $500 shoes in dicey neighborhoods, or wandering through sketchy areas at night, you'll be fine. Common sense and situational awareness like anywhere else. The safety concerns are somewhat overblown. You'll be far safer than a Mexican police officer would be. As far as rent prices it really varies depending on city, state, neighborhood, level of amenities and so on. A quick search on FB marketplace will show you what you can get for $1000 in a nice town like Puerto Vallarta, for instance. You could find a nice apartment or small house in that range.

As someone living in Mexico, in a relatively safe location, I agree with what you say. HOWEVER, security is still an issue in the country, and many are quite concerned about that. People coming from abroad should NEVER underestimate their safety, and not attract any unwanted attention. There was a recent case of a citizen from India having his life cut short because he withdrew a large amount of cash at the airport and was noticed by some gangs. If security and crime could be addressed along with other aspects such as corruption, inefficient bureaucracy, and nepotism, then yes, Mexico has lots of potential, and quite good food on top of that.

Good for you buddy, but I gotta say I hate the gentrification and privatization all over the place, even local commerce is advertised in dollars in most cases. Puerto Peñasco is a special place for me, for many reasons, but with time I've lost intention of visiting more often, or living there as I once hoped. Also, I know local government doesn't do any favor, but all this privatization doesn't help to city development from my point of view, besides the touristic infrastructure and property development, I am still seeing the same sandy streets outside main routes, so that honestly makes me mad too. Anyway, this comes from someone who is hoping for better future for the country and our people, although, I do wish success in your endeavors here, hoping you'll bring an actual benefit to the community as well along with your businesses.

I lived in Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Rosarito, Guadalajara and Chihuahua. Here are some wonderful facts: 1- If you wish to rent a place, be ready to present a co-signer to your rental agreement, or put up a huge deposit (not preferred by the owners). 2- While working in a project at a Mexican mine, while being driven to the airport my car was escorted by a pickup truck with guards carrying rifles and submachine guns. 3- When my family and I lived in Chihuahua we lived in a nice house, with a swimming pool, inside a guarded residential area. It was like living in a golden cage, as we couldn't go out without seeing people hanging from bridges by the neck, be threatened by shootouts, or possibly seeing a severed head in the street. 4- If you want to live in a house that will be almost as comfortable as an American home, be prepared to have a lot of money. 5- When in Puerto Vallarta we found out that it is good if you are at a hotel. Shopping at a large supermarket we found food, particularly vegetables, to be very dirty, not trustworthy for our consumption. 6- Bureaucracy is out of control. 7- Businesses will screw you up with no consequences. 8- All people are not as nice as stated. I have had many rude interactions there as in the US or anywhere in the world. 9 - If you say that infrastructure is great, I am sure you haven't been driving around, you don't use Mexican utilities, and you don't use Mexican internet. I am sure I could remember a lot more but will stop using my time for nothing.

En lugar de quejarnos con los gringos, hay que quejarnos con los que están gentrificando y subiendo los precios a su conveniencia. Mexico has a lot to offer, and you can enjoy a pretty high standard of living especially if you earn USD/CAD etc. Cost of living is substantially less than its northern neighbors (although Mexico can no longer be consider a "cheap" country, especially if you want to live and eat well). It does however have its downsides. One of the biggest adjustments for an American/Canadian is the overall aesthetic. Large parts of the country are, quite frankly, ugly. If you're accustomed to the kinds of amenities, especially parks and green spaces that you'd find in American or Canadian cities, Mexico can be a bit disappointing in that department. Not to mention when you do find some open space it is often full of garbage and trash and discarded construction materials, plastic bottles and all manner of refuse floating in waterways and so forth. In short, it can be sort of stinky and trashy and ugly. It's not on the same level, nowhere close really, as what you're used to in North America. CDMX is a lively and dynamic city, with some nice parks and an excellent metro system making it easy to get around. That being said if you like peace and quiet, it's likely not the place for you. 20 million people gets tiring. Also important to consider that, statistically, Mexico City is not a particularly safe place. If you're considering living there, and Mexico in general, you need to educate yourself, familiarize with local culture and socioeconomic realities, and update your security practices accordingly. Mexican food is (or can be) fantastic. It can also be mediocre. Mexico City has a good selection of international fare, but if you're in other Mexican cities it can be tricky to find anything more than an endless menu of tacos and pizza. It's not like most North American cities where you can find superb quality food from any country. I've heard much about the "warmth" of Mexican people, but I didn't find them any warmer than people I've met from anywhere else. There's nothing special about them, to put it bluntly. There are lovely Mexicans and there are idiots too, just like everywhere else. There is a wealth of nature to explore outside the cities. Mexico has many national and state parks, and protected wilderness areas. And of course the beaches are amazing (depending where you go). There are also some fantastic real estate opportunities, especially if you're willing to look beyond the usual touristic areas. Unless you're in a smaller town, I'm not sure I'd want to raise a family in Mexico, to be honest. I suppose that depends on your values and priorities. Children don't play outside by themselves and are mostly confined to indoor areas or courtyards behind walls. It's not common to see kids just running around their neighborhood playing. Parents rightfully have security concerns. This is something to consider carefully. My recommendation would be that if you are planning to raise kids in Mexico, find a smaller town where you'd feel comfortable with them playing outside and being kids and being safe and free. No country is perfect and we all have to weigh our decisions. I would still choose Mexico over Canada no matter what, just for the climate alone. When comparing to the USA, it would really depend on what city and state we're talking about. Another thing to consider is if you're a freedom loving American who wants to own guns and go shooting, you'd best stay north of the border. It is possible to own some firearms in Mexico but the process is much more strict and highly regulated. And of course any review of Mexico would be incomplete without pointing out it is technically a narco-state. Mostly it all runs under the surface and you won't see much unless you're in a particularly dangerous place like Celaya or something, or buying cocaine from a guy in the bathroom at a cartel-owned club in a tourist beach town. Nevertheless, it is a reality. And just as you might be leaving your current country partly for political reasons, you'd better at least understand that the political situation in Mexico is, for lack of a better word, Fubar, and won't change significantly in our lifetimes unless the Mexican people rise up in armed revolution, which probably ain't gonna happen. Make your peace with it and enjoy a beer and some cheap(ish) tacos on the beach. Overall, in terms of quality of life, Mexico has everything you need and a wealth of natural beauty. You will run up against certain limitations and drawbacks; some of those little things just have to be discovered by spending time there. I'd give it 7.5/10 overall. It's definitely possible to find your slice of paradise and carve out an amazing life down there.

@@gustavoperez5480Expatriates are like immigrants, with the difference that they can easily go to visit their native country and often do, or simply move to some other country out of curiosity. Migration is defined as the intention to permanently settle in a different country, out more of necessity than convenience.
