Why I Started Cooking with Mama Lin

A few years ago, I started recording and documenting my mom's recipes online. I wanted to learn more traditional Chinese recipes to connect with my Chinese heritage. My mom cooks a lot of classic Cantonese and Toisan/Hoisan (台山) dishes that my family loves. As she's getting older, I want to try my best to learn her recipes before they're lost. I am so proud of my mom, and I hope our love for each other and for our food shines through in our videos!
This video was prepared in preparation for the Rooted Recipes Project x Forging Our Futures virtual storytelling event on June 9th, 2021. Lisa, I love your video and your mission to memorialize her recipes. Cantonese cooking is my favorite. My parents were both Toisanese also, but my sisters and I were born in Hong Kong, so we identify more with the Cantonese dialect. But both my parents have passed and I wished I had learned how to cook all those great Cantonese dishes when I was growing up. So thank you for bringing Cantonese cooking online so we can all learn. Hello from Los Angeles!! 🌞 My parents are also f Taishanese and growing up we always spoke taishan with them. I’m currently 29 years old and I have noticed in LA not many people speak taishan even though they are taishanese, instead they speak Cantonese. Every time i heard people speaking taishanese it gives me some sort of “comfort” 😆 Also, are you able to share or make a video of your mom’s sponge cake? Thank you!!!

Hi Lisa! I love this. My mom didn’t cook nearly as much as yours but I’ve also made it a mission to learn how to make my mom’s dishes I loved to eat as I was growing up. I also wanted to ask you if you have the recipe for the ‘tay’ at 0:39. I’ve been to parties where the elders have made this and other similar tays. Is this hom sui gok or something else?

It's really similar. In Toisan, it's call haam goi leng. I'll be sharing the recipe more towards Lunar New Year time!
