Absolutely agree with you. Asobo never did allow users to beta test the VR part of the sim before official release, because they had zero confidence in it. While the sim performs reasonably well in flat screen mode, VR is just a blurry mess, especially for those who like to fly at low altitudes (500-1000') like I do. Smoothness and clarity is nowhere near the level you can get in MSFS 2020 with DirectX 11, even with a high-end PC (I9-14900K, RTX 4090, Pimax Crystal Light).

Whole heartedly agree Steve. I'm 65, I don't know about most people, but for myself, I am tired of paying good money to be a beta tester ($90 in Canada for MSFS 2024 base version). When I buy a sim or a game, I want it to be polished and not a nightmare to use thus taking away from the enjoyment. Agreed, MSFS 2024 should have been delayed and renamed to 2025 or even 2026 if it would have meant a more complete and working package. When I saw it went from "Tech Alpha" to full release, a warning flag went up and the hype made no sense to me, I guess I was right to hold off. Still very much enjoying 2020, probably will enjoy 2024 when it's ready to be enjoyed. That's when I'll buy it.

Couldn't have said it better. Like you, I won't pay to be beta tester. It's shady that Asobo/M$ expect customers to pay full-price for a beta product. Let publishers know this is not OK.

I am just hours away from entering the year I turn 60. I have worked as a CEO for an IT company for 25 years. I am tired of the development I have witnessed, where fully developed and tested software disappears in favor of products that are not properly tested. It takes over 8 years for an operating system to function reasonably well, without serious bugs and with good drivers. Companies like Microsoft and others are pushing out half-baked software for sale to customers who end up being beta testers. This is an unacceptable development. I was a hardcore simmer over 20 years ago but had long since shelved my HOTAS Cougar sticks (F-16 and A-10 Warthog) due to a demanding job. I scaled back on work now, and my wife gave me FS2020, FS2024, and VR goggles as a Christmas gift. -A few months ago, I purchased a relatively expensive and powerful PC to handle heavy Photoshop and video editing programs and to see if I would regain an interest in flight simulators. During Christmas, I installed FS2020 but have not yet installed FS2020 because I discovered several reports on KZbin saying the same as what this video describes. When we purchase an expensive product, I expect it to be of high quality, testet but I accept minor bugs. We live in Norway, and my Canadian wife imported boxed (collector’s) versions of both simulators in the Premium Deluxe edition. We are talking about over 340 USD including customs fees to bring them into the country. I think what you wrote was excellent. Have a great New Year.

2024 runs absolutely smooth for me in VR since weeks. Much better than it ever was in 2020, which I deleted from my pc. No regrets. The walkaround adds more realism to the whole thing. Look at the stupid areas of black ground from 1:35 on the right. These have been implemented in 2020 with the last WU for Switzerland. For me, it breaks the realism. Fly over the same area in Switzerland in 2024. It is a difference of night and day in terms of details. 2024 is leaps ahead. Maybe not in all world regions yet, though. Btw: After FS98, there was FS2000, then 2002, then 2004 and then came FSX in 2006 :).

Graphics settings (2024, and also the usual settings I had in 2020): Mix of High-End and Ultra, using TAA / DLSS Quality. At last! Somebody stating the blindingly obvious! Im really pissed off with YT'ers being apologists for MS/Asobo. We - the FS community - need to make a stand and send a clear message that we will NOT accept bug-ridden, half-finished software AND be forced to pay for the 'privilege' of being a beta tester!! There is no way that MSFS24 should have been released given the stage of its development. Fortunately, I did not buy into the hype, remembering all too well the dubious track record of MS and the equally disturbing fact that after 4 years MS had still not addressed many issues with MSFS 20. Personally, I have zero confidence that many of the significant flaws apparent with the current iteration of FS will ever be fixed . I would like nothing more than to be proved wrong - but I'm not holding my breath.

@@rickharrissI think you're missing the point. The point is when you have over 3,000,000 gigabytes of game data to go through, how long do you think it would take even a professional team to find and fix every bug? I think what they did with the game is rather impressive, and they've been trying hard to get things fixed quickly. People seem to have rose-colored nostalgiavision when looking back at older games. It's a lot easier to find and fix bugs when there's only a hundred megabytes of data to go through. I've been playing games since MS-DOS, and I'm yet to play one that didn't have bugs, glitches, graphical issues, crashes to the desktop, and sometimes even game-breaking problems. Some got fixed by patches and became great games. This goes for all eras and both established studios and indie developers.

My other concern, though, is if others like you shelf 2024 and go back to 2020, it will limit the feedback that is provided. In 2024, I get graphic abberations and dreadful performance regardless of settings. I am sick of losing all my control settings every time I change livery. I am tired of the mouse not working in VR. Most of all I am bored with having to spend hours just trying to get the wretched thing to work every time I want to fly. I am also bored of hearing how wonderful the new sim is…. I completely agree with you. i was extremely looking forward to the arrival of MSFS 2024 as they had promised a VR experience like no other. What a disappointment it was for me to see the disaster it actually was and still is today after over 6 weeks of it's coming out. I personally love flying the Longitude and especially planning my IFR trips. Although i am extremely pleased by the advent of the new EFB, I simply can't use it in VR. Actually, it's next to impossible to do any type of IFR flights within VR. It is clear that although they stated that everyone at Asobo has a VR set and that they had partnered with Pimax, It is clear that VR was simply not even a afterthought for Asobo. if it had been, they certainly would have seen the minute they start the SIM that VR is simply broken. I am sorry but they will never be able to make me believe that they actually tested VR before letting everyone access the software. Like you i am convinced and would have been a lot happier if they had released the SIM in the summer of 2025 after actually properly testing and fixing all the bugs in it. So yeah this was a perfect example on how not to launch a new SIM. A real disaster and they should be ashamed to doing this.

I’ve been a flight sim enthusiast since the mid 1980’s - for decades we simmers have wanted something like MSFS 2020. After owning and trying just about every flight sim available in the last 30 years, nothing compares to the experience and fidelity of MSFS 2020 in VR. After seeing the length of time it took for Asobo and Microsoft to get MSFS 2020 to a mature state, I plan to pass on MSFS2024 for at least 18 to 24 months while I wait to hear that it has gotten better.

However, the other issues make it difficult for me to recommend 2024. The cloud based software is 180 degrees off course. I’m sure the cloud stream is intended to benefit XBox players. Given the ever decreasing cost of multiple terabyte drives, there is no need for streaming. My internet connect is good, but not great. As a game-developer for 25+ years, I had a feeling that MSFS2024 was coming in hot, especially considering how janky it was in the early preview builds. You’re right when you say that current players are Beta testers, it’s just a shame that the fragility of the initial release didn’t get messaged out. My gut feel here is that MS were putting pressure on Asobo to hit the release window and whether it was ready or not, it was getting launched. A prolonged Open-Beta would have been preferable from a messaging perspective and I’m sure would have calmed a lot of players nerves when the sim finally launched at scale and no-one could connect. People do forget that making games is bloody HARD, but this doesn’t justify how poorly this launch has been handled.

I could not agree with you more! Last night I tried 2024 and I kept getting really bad performance from the sim. It couldn’t load the textures properly, I tried restarting the sim a few times, I restarted my machine a couple of times, but 2024 was having lots of trouble loading data. After being frustrated for maybe an hour and a half trying to troubleshoot I decided to go back to 2020 and I was impressed how good that sim is. I’ll stick to 2020 until I start hearing good things about 2024. I know Asobo will fix 2024 I’m not worry about it. I do think 2024 needs to stop being a cloud simulator. It’s not efficient in any way. I hope Microsoft makes this happen.

Thanks Steve. Your honesty really resonated with my own view point on this sim. There are also far too many people singing its praises and as we know that is not doing the situation thus solving the problems any justice. I said to myself I would keep at it but honesty my actions have spoken louder and I haven’t picked the sim up in weeks now. I just lost the interest to be honest and seriously thinking of going back to 2020 for now. At the end of the day it’s not down to us consumers to test an unfinished product; if I was to personally I would apply for a job at adobo. I’m all for giving feedback but not on the basis of an unfinished product. However I will do so as you recommend since I care for the community and do it for the other enthusiasts out there. As a side note I would like to thank you my friend for all your content and super hard work providing us with your videos. I only know it’s not easy and takes much time. Watching your videos is such a joy and help all round. It’s definitely one of my vr highlights hands down of this passion. Have a great new year ahead my friend. Ps I suspect one of the main issues is the steaming servers. Something magical needs to happen there as the amount of irregularity in performance from day to day is he,she or it on her monthly you know what lol.

I agree 100%. I'm concerned though that in my last post I reported how in 2020, the checking for updates page was taking around 20 seconds and others reported the same. It used to just flash up so you could frequently miss it. Now it isn;t 20 seconds, more like a minute. Do you think they're nicking 2020 server bandwidth to re-apply it to 2024 streaming meaning soon we'll be waiting minutes for 2020 to simply check for updates and be forced to pay for and use an inadequate 2024 that can't cope with demand now?

I skipped 2020 when it came out and bought 2024 recently and while it looks nice it runs rough on a 9800x3d/7900xtx combo only getting about 100fps with frame generation with ultra settings. I bought 2020 and I can get 200fps with frame generation and ultra settings the game looks 99.9% as good at 2024 and just feels smoother. I'm running a 3440x1440 240hz monitor so I want all my games near 240 if possible for the best immersion. I'm waiting on my Pimax Crystal Light to arrive to get some VR FPS numbers.

I don't have all these problems with my Pico 4 Ultra. 45Fps in New York in high graphics. I have no problem assigning my keys and walking freely everywhere. I find MFS2024 much more enjoyable to fly than MFS2020 simply because the landscapes are closer to reality. For me a simulation like MFS is contemplation, why want less beautiful landscapes... I have no problems using my Hyperformance mods, so I'm super happy, and although there is still a lot to do I won't go back. AMD Ryzen 9800X3D or 7800X3D help a lot...

I recently went back to 2020 myself as 2024 just continues to have issues crashing to desktop. I had a smooth flight experience and I wasn't surprised about that. What I was surprised about is how much difference the subtle changes make, for example the lighting, having a copilot in the cockpit, the trees, the clouds, the actual seasons, not just Bijan. I just wish these issues would be sorted out sooner than later but for now I'd be good if the CTDs stopped and I was able to fly consistently. That shouldn't be too much to ask for but I do remember having this same issue with 2020 for a while before they finally sorted it out. I wonder if the 5090 will help with some of the stability issues.

My main VR problem in 2024 is the double mouse pointer issue and the mouse pointer not jumping to the correct distance of the buttons I want to press. That is present in all aircrafts to a degree, but it's really painful when you try to use the Autopilot buttons in the PC-12 for example.

I have a 4TB Nvme drive (under $200). No problem with 2020 and 2024 on the same drive. Using Addon Linker you only need one set of community packages because the only thing in 2020 community and 2024 community will be links, not files. And the total amount of data in them will be almost nothing. All the data will be in one Addon Linker folder structure. Just one, not two.

This looks so much better at my PC. Of course my PC offers the update Windows 11 24H2, but I did not accept and switched off updates for 5 weeks. Maybe you could also connect the ‚dead‘ Reverb G2 again to compare. Such a shame MS did kill it…

Thanks for the shout to MS / Asobo about VR in the new sim because yes it's frustration when it does not work and even with work around it's just not stable. I can't go back to old FS20 because I don't have the SSD space for it on my sim and I've been switching so many addons for the new new that only work in the new and not in the old because FS24 addons work only in the new. I hope they fix VR asap because yes, I need a new GPU RTX-4090 or better to be able to enjoy the new sim because that also was a performance downgrade. That auto fps tool in the new sim does not work ar it does but only if you have the GPU grunt power.

I’ve learned so much more about flying in 2020 than I ever have in 2024. In 2024, you learn workarounds for half baked planes. Control bindings are horrible- example: trim axis is random, could be inverted on some planes while normal for others is just stupid. Zero consistency. Countless “an error has occurred” resetting all progress for the career mission. I made it to buying my own 737-max. So that’s a ton of hours. Can barely get a mission in without constantly worrying about their servers erroring out. And believe me, it’s their servers causing the “error has occurred” issue.

Which, again as you say, allows much crisper resolutions. Will check 2024 again in 6 months or whenever there's a substantial patch, especially for the VR issues. Thank you for "moaning", it's highly warranted and also the conclensus on the forums.

I remember 2020's launch being pretty shabby as well and it taking a while to get fully sorted. My gripes were the massive changes to the control maps and inability to import them from 2020. In my case I have quite a hardware cockpit setup that took a very long time to get mapped but even though I applied my map to all aircraft I still have situations where I fly an aircraft I have not flown yet and for some reason my prop control will also be doing throttles, and stuff like that. I have not yet tried VR on my ancient HTV Vive, but did try it on 2020 and was not impressed. I think XP11 had a much better VR implementation than MS.

I totally agree with you Steve. Unless you are a Beta Tester, then it is best to wait a few months like I am , hopefully most FS2024 bugs and issues will be sorted. I am happy with FS2020, and runs superb in monitor and in my Quest 3. Maybe Asobo should call this 'Flight and Walking Simulator'? What is the point, it only complicates the sim and uses more PC resources? In FS2020, the external views are enough? If one wants to walk in the world use Google Street View. What is next FS, a 'Boat and Shipping Sim', 'Car and Truck Sim', et. Keep it as the name says 'Flight Simulator'. I am NOT knocking Flight Simulator as it is a giant leap from MS Flightsims before FS2020. One more thing to ask, your views of the 'Pimax Dream Air' or are you still waiting for one from Pimax? Maybe it is just a Dream!? Happy New Year. Ian

I keep looking at 2020 and thinking I made a mistake. It does look better in a lot of ways. The DLSS2 on a 3 series card is bad. Everything looks like it's upscaled from 240p. Sometimes the ghosting and wird pixelation around things, along with the middle distance going over water is really yuk. Some things like shadows and RT look better but overall it's hard to tell why you would upgrade when the previous version is stable for one thing

Great video, Steve. I see most people echo what you say here, which was very expected obviously, after having seen all the frustration in different forums. However, for me personally, there in no going back to 2020. I'm actually enjoying 2024 very much. Silky smooth and exquisite visuals. Ofc there ARE things that need fixing, but I can live with it until it gets fixed. But then again, I am flying EXCLUSIVELY VFR, and 90% of the time in GA aircrafts. So I guess a lot of it has to do with how you use the sim as well. I've had some insanely good experiences in gliders for instance. That has come a long way. But I absolutely agree with you that ASOBO shouldn't have released the sim in its current state. For anyone wondering, I'm using the Pimax Crystal with a 4090 with 32Gb RAM and an i7-13700k Regardless of my own experiences, I'm looking forward to see more content from the 2020 version, as I absolutely love your videos as you know. I whacked World Scale to it's extreme. I now have rock solid 45 fps and airfield buildings can be seen from 5 miles at 2000'. Nearly 8 miles at 3500'.
