Opera isn't accessible - by any definition of the word. Making opera accessible for disabled audiences and artists, for other marginalized folks, for those who don't expect to be welcomed, for those who don't expect to see themselves represented onstage... that is what makes people interested in opera. That's what keeps opera alive.

I recently asked a few none opera lovers when they had had any contact with the form, and the resounding answer was Nessun Dorma in 1990 when it was used as the 'theme tune' to the soccer world cup. I don't like soccer personally, but I thought this was a great way to bring opera (and this particularly amazing piece) to those that would otherwise never have any contact with it.

I totally agree! I think one of the things that surprises non-opera-people the most when they do attend the opera is how many tunes they actually already know. This type of connecting with people lets them know they can be included in operatic spaces! :) I love it!

It's pretty astounding how marginalized singers-- disabled, BIPOC, etc., are focused on the exact ways opera could be more accessible and inclusive ...where are the singers and former singers who aren't just want to tantrum because it's not working or didn't work for them.

Girl that's not even controversial. I think we all feel the same way, but the "people in charge" just continue to uphold the status quo anyway. Even though the status quo is so dated that it's almost hilarious at this point.

I'd like to say Elina Garanca's performance in the 2009 Met version of Carmen is what finally made me love opera. Since discovering her I've gone head first into everything opera. Currently have Met On Demand and am soaking it all up. Is there a greater art form? Don't think so.

I feel like musicals have become the “accessible opera”, or at least filled its slot. Of course I would never suggest they are the same. But they kind of fill that gap for younger people nowadays?
