Hello Scotty. Big fan of your videos. I own a 2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer. As Always like you had told in one of the videos, I just keep the engine warming for a minute in the morning and then move on. However during the summers when I stand in traffic at 12pm and start again, the transmission finds it little hard to shift to the second gear. This problem does not come in the night or during winter or early morning. Any suggestions as to what can be done?

Why would car makers put the air intake inside the fender?! That just seems like they want you to destroy your wngine
@Studio-IV8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. More money for them
@zathras2278 жыл бұрын
you want the coldest air possible, it is more dense so in turn it combusts better. the further away from the warm engine the air is sucked in the colder it is. Because the engine bay warms up as you drive your performance would decrease if you sucked in warm air from the engine bay. that's why people install cold air intakes on their vehicles. and it's not manufacturers looking to get more money out of you, they're trying to maximize the performance of your car. just don't drive through water, you're in a car not a boat.

Jake McCoy that's why you should never take your car to a shop if you want it to still be running, and save thousands of dolors. I'm sure he didn't strip it. Probably you, or some other nut job before him tightened the bolt too tight. That bolt should only be snug, never tighten it too much. Different shops use the cheapest oil and oil filter to rob you and make you come back sooner. If you don't know how to change oil, which every person with a car should know these basics at the beginning. Always bring your own oil filter and watch them put it on to make sure they do and oil as well. Some scam shops don't even change the oil or filter so take a marker and make a mark on the filter before you take it to get it changed and see if they actually do. Hope this little trick helps out

He's annoying and usually speak shit. The resonator box is located there. There is a duct going from the air filter box to the resonator box in the fender ,and from the resonator there is another duct coming up right under the bonnet ,usually near an opening near the headlight. To add on to the other commentators, it's more efficient for the engine due to colder air being more dense. Denser air means more oxygen. More oxygen with fuel in a stroke = more power Depending on the tune of the vehicle and type and age, it varies, but there are differences between summer driving (less dense, hotter air, less oxygen per stroke) and winter driving (my personal favorite - more dense, cold air, more oxygen per stroke). Enjoying your channel, Mr. Kilmer!

its to suck in colder air which enhances combustion thus increasing a little bit in horsepower. A good way to prevent hydrolocking or blowing your engine is to install a good hydro shield which is about 20 bucks or so, and to install a AEM air bypass valve (40-50$) which eliminates almost all possibility of this happening William Ross Scotty Kilmer

Hey Scotty, love your videos! I recently bought a car that runs and drives just fine. I recently noticed that water (when its raining) and snow and salt (when its snowing) enter the front through the grill and get into the engine bay. Its not much, but after cleaning the engine bay, I noticed it again a couple of weeks later. What could be causing this? Could the grill be missing a part that normally stops this from happening? Thanks!

there are some counter-measures some car manufacturers have in place. My 2000 BMW E39 has the air inlet pointing to the rear, so direct flow into it is minimized a bit and in addition to that there is another inlet on top of the air filter box, so essentially if the bottom one is blocked(by water etc) the top one can still get air.

how do you find out where your car's intake is? I have a 2009 forester...
@ConGie10 жыл бұрын
Passenger side fender. You won't need to worry too much because it's an suv and sits a little higher than say a sedan, but just keep in mind water can always splash up.
@professorbland10 жыл бұрын
ConGie-Personal thanks. isn't there also some way to put a pipe that goes up to the roof --- i thought i saw that on a land rover once
@ConGie10 жыл бұрын
professorbland In my opinion that would be a horrible idea. You could easily do it but if water is getting in the engine compartment you're likely to short out which will cause problems with the ignition system. One way or another your vehicle will stop moving. At the very least you could fit a cold air intake that sits within the engine bay and is just shrouded to prevent the heat coming off the engine from reaching the intake. Then you would only have to worry about the water's depth instead of whether or not the water will splash up in the wheel well and get sucked in. That's as good is it gets.

ConGie-Personal ok thanks

I bet he just ran it without the spark plugs. That way, the water has somewhere to go without bending the con rods or otherwise being a dick, because it just gets pushed out the holes where the spark plugs were. Almost like a bunch of large syringes.

Deer Scotty, Mi familia and mi watch your videos every night during La Comida. Please Help! Last night mi hermana Juanita drove the family 1976 Ford Lincoln LTD through a car wash. This caused pieces of the engine to shoot out all over the place, and now the car wash owners are trying to sue us for dameeges. We want to sue them back because the car wash sign didnt say nuthing about water causing engine damage, and our car doesnt have a hood. What can we do? Gracias (thanks) -Hector Romano Venezuela.
@jackdaniels910310 жыл бұрын
TheOlJWShow You brought it upon yourself! You cannot spray that much pressure on an engine, you got it right in the air breather and carb! You're screwed, possibly contact a lawyer but you will likely be paying out the ass. Also, why didn't your car have a hood? You would most likely have been pulled over for that as it is really unsafe.
@TheOlJWShow10 жыл бұрын
Jack Daniels The car overheats, so mi Hermano, Julius Contentina Trollio said we should take the hood off the car and strap a shop fan to the top of the engine. It makes sense my frind, because a radiator fan only cools the front of the engine. But when wee drove through the car wash, water prayed everywhere, getting me wet and causing the engeen to 'splode.

@Watcher322310 жыл бұрын
Well, even a Land Rover can hydrolock if you drive in too deep a flooded area or if you drive through water too fast, which tends to kick water up where you don't want it to go.

@Watcher322310 жыл бұрын
obmoder1 Go above 20 inches and uh-oh! So, the claim that driving too deep is accurate; I didn't specify a depth. But, driving too fast still risks kicking water up and risking ingestion.

Vast majority of vehicles don't have an air intake that low. Just tell people how deep in water each vehicle can drive. Giving the same tip for all of them is pointless.
@wellivea16 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't be driving in water even a few inches high. That's how people get stranded and have to be rescued.
@wellivea16 жыл бұрын
If it's water that's moving, anyway. You cannot accurately judge the height (or potential rise) of the water.

So don't drive in the rain then, right?
@Lessinath8 жыл бұрын
No, that's OK to do (of course). It really takes a lot of water fast to do this, as long as the engine is ingesting mostly air it won't have a problem. The problem is if you hit that point, you'll go from having no problem to having big problems very fast. If you're not driving through deep puddles, you shouldn't have a problem.

That seems really stupid. Why in't the intake higher?
@arsyadidris29198 жыл бұрын
well... car designers wanted the intake low coz thats where the colder air is. cold air is more dense so more air, better combustion.
@Hendlton8 жыл бұрын
Arsyad Idris It can't be more than a few degrees colder and even if it is, is it worth making the car completely die when it drives through a puddle?
@arsyadidris29198 жыл бұрын
+Hendlton actually engine bay temp can get to 60deg celsius where i come from compared to ambient around 30 deg c. but yeah im gona agree with u on that. really dont need it to be that low. y bust ur engine for the sake of cooler air rite

Thats what an inter-cooler is for. This is just shit engineering.
@arsyadidris29198 жыл бұрын
+Alberto Klocker in all honesty most cars (in my country anyways) have their air intake vent quite near the top, usually slightly above the tire height, a good 2-3 feet depending on the car. those usually guilty of having their intakes near the ground r the germans, not all but some ie f10 5series. dont know bout shit engineering but its definitely shit (read evil genius) business planning. i mean, if u drive through water when they told u not to coz they dilibirately put the intake is so low, im gessing ur waranty will b void.

I was just looking for this comment haha. But I was surprised in his case because Mercedes normally puts the air intakes at the top (near the hood release lock), so he must have gone though a hell of a lot of water..... I don't know, there's something he's not admitting to lol
@jamesbonanno33597 жыл бұрын
It's always a good idea to know where your air intake is located. On some Vehicles it's actually at the top of the engine. Other is it lower. Scotty is absolutely right? It doesn't take much more than a cup of water to go into your air intake and hydrolock your engine. You will notice sometimes you see certain vehicles that have a snorkel on them that's the air intake much higher so that they can drive through a couple foot of water without hurting the engine. Knowledge is power! Know where your air intake is located in case you do have to go through some high water in case there's an emergency and you have to leave an area.
@eatinginternet86907 жыл бұрын
Sounds like crappy design. My subaru sucks air in from just below the hood, I can't imagine sucking air straight from the ground! Not to say that everything is designed well on it.

you are right but if you control the rpms you can literally spray a hose directly at the intake because that happens in the water gets vaporized and evaporates before it can cause damage

There is a section of road that routinely floods that I driven through many times in different vehicles, as does others who live there. Never a problem until the first time I drove my Challenger through it. That will be the last time. Fortunately the car did not flood. The water was not deep enough, but the engine took a drink. First thing I did whe I got the car back with its new engine was order a cold air intake. I do not plan to drive through water again, but there are still deep puddles that are unavoidable. I do not want to alter the original airbox. If I trade in the car in a few years down the road, I will be putting back in, but another solution that might work is to drill 3 or 4 one inch holes in the filter box with a hole saw bit just below the filter (before the filter). Normal driving most of the air will still come from low down in the fender, but should you accidently drive through some water the holes might keep enough vacuum from being created to suck up water. I will be putting my stock box on a shelf, and use a cold air intake while I own it. Trade-in time, and the stock box goes back in. BTW, Pentastars before labor are around $8000.
@xTRPN8 жыл бұрын

@xTRPN8 жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as a hot air intake. Why would you want even hotter air going into your engine that's stupid. There is Cold Air Intake and a short ram intake. And Cold air intakes don't need to have a box around them for cold air. Short ram stays near the motor. Cold air intakes are away from it.
@Hole_Motorsports8 жыл бұрын
xTRPN Its a joke. A CAI that sits in the engine bay without an airbox around it just sucks in hot air from the engine bay.
