Kakashi is the leader of Team 7, so he too is fated to carry burdens in that sense. Kakashi Hatake has always been my favorite character in Naruto on many levels so I wanted to take this opportunity to explain why he's a great character. Kakashi didn’t really teach them that much though, just the group to walk on threes and Sasuke’s chidori. Which wasn’t that smart of a move considering Sasuke wasn’t emotionally ready to have that much power and as expected he used it wrong several times. Although to be fair Sasuke needed that to beat Gaara and Kakashi thought he would’ve used it as wisely as he does. Naruto’s training was almost completely done under Jiraya and his master first and Killer Be second while Kakashi only taught him some basic rules and gave him a very good hint to how to train himself. Also Kakashi wasn’t very present and all of his students lacked his support at some point of the story especially Sasuke. That’s true, he’s not a good teacher in every sense. There are a few invaluable things Kakashi taught his team better than anyone else though. What it means to be a ninja and to take that seriously including Obito’s rule. And also what it means to guide and protect your teammates when you are working with them. Also he used the bell test better than anyone who used it before.

I used to never understand why sasuke went to orochimaru, I always thought kakashi could have trained him just as well but looking at it from sasukes pov it makes so much sense. He had just learned an s rank jutsu from the strongest Jonin in konoha and still got folded by transformed gaara, meanwhile naruto had like a month of training with a sannin and he beat gaara. Then itachi comes to the village and leaves him and his sensei hospitalized. Not only did he get embarrassed by itachi but so did the guy that’s supposed to prepare him for killing itachi. Then he finds out itachi was “scared off” by jiraiya who’s relative to orochimaru. The same orochimaru that came to the village and killed the pinnacle of strength that the village had to offer. Putting all this together it makes perfect sense why he thought Oro could prepare him better.

Plus Sasuke didn't really care if he lived for a long time, as long as it got him closer to his goal. Thus he took everything Orochimaru had to offer and when his teacher had nothing more to offer? He consumed him whole with his immense willpower. Sure, his eyes had a lot to do with it, but his drive and obsession is both his greatest strength and weakness. Which I think is the reason he chose not to receive a replacement arm, as a constant reminder that he had almost crossed the line and had to be pulled all the way back by someone far more stubborn.

And, I mean, that's a correct assesment, we didn't get to see what happened in the time skip but he came back much stronger and ready to kill Orochimaru, which not even Naruto was even close to at that point, you could argue that it was because he was an Uchiha (and the show certainly wants to portray it that way), but regular Uchihas weren't that OP, so, yeah, Orochimaru may be a dick but was a good teacher to Sasuke

Weird that nobody mentioned Asuma. His team was the only team with solid teamwork and formation in the Chuunin exam arc. He was the only teacher who guided all three of his pupils all the way to his death. He also had personal bond with all three, despite all of them including Asuma being only side characters, which in Kishimoto’s world is quite rare

Guy because of their individual strengths, not because of any teamwork they displayed, because they didn't. I always saw Kakashi as the most grounded Naruto character. More than maybe anyone else, Kakashi KNOWS how brutal and unfair the world is. How good intentions don't mean you'll survive, and will is often not enough. But he isn't a nihilist. He still sees value in love and friendship and caring for others. But this means that if something threatens those he cares about, Kakashi doesn't hold back. Kakashi doesn't fight fair. He sees a target, and he eliminates them. There and then. Because he sees it as his job to get his hands dirty, to take all the burdens on himself, so that the next generation can stay clean and finally end the cycle of hatred.

Because of Kakashi's reservedness during the main series, it can be easy to assume that the most critical points of his character development are in the past and that he's more or less static during his time as the leader of Team 7. But the things he goes through as a teacher teach him much more than the things he went through as a student if you look carefully enough. Such an amazing analysis of his character based entirely on part 1 material is proof of that.

I feel kakashi actually got through to sasuke when he chained him up and gave him the “We still have friends” speech. Kakashi basically told sasuke his origin and how it is similar sasuke’s own, but left out crucial details. However the point got across to sasuke and sasuke actually understood what kakashi meant. Sasuke even saw naruto and Sakura on his shoulders in that moment. So, kakashi left sasuke to make his decision. The sad irony is that kakashi was TOO EARLY for once. After kakashi left sasuke to interpret his own vulnerability and goals, orochimaru’s influence came through as the curse mark squad. They grabbed sasuke’s heart as it was in a crucial development stage and coddled it with ill intention. Kakashi was too early. If he spoke to sasuke after the curse mark squad came, sasuke may have developed better and let go of revenge easier or at the very least would stick with the leaf to accomplish his goal. Kakashi may have opened up more about his own life and helped sasuke through his. Kakashi is a great teacher who truly cares for his students, but his own self doubt and grief held him back from doing more. With sasuke he just couldn’t keep up with sasuke’s thirst for revenge and couldn’t fully open his heart about his own past. With naruto, kakashi struggled to bond with him for a long time due to them not having much in common initially and the fact naruto is minato’s son (a very touchy subject for kakashi and a literal shard of the past). With Sakura, she reminded kakashi of rin which made it hard for him to bond with her like naruto and also struggled with her main goal: love. Kakashi struggled with love in his own heart for a very very long time and had no idea how to confront that truly. He didn’t really know how to teach Sakura in a goal oriented way so he just tried doing what he could by posting out her strengths and desires. It wasn’t kakashi’s fault this occurred and he did try his best. It’s a sad tale for kakashi. However that sadness does bloom into happiness born from struggle.

My only problem with Kakashi is that he completely ignores Sakura. She reminds him of Rin but doesn’t train her so that what happens to her doesn’t happen to Sakura. The minute he see Sakura’s obsession with Sasuke, he should have quickly knocked sense into her. Specifically in terms of chakra control, Kakashi revealed Sakuras talents for chakra control in the first place as seen in Land of Waves Arc & taught Sakura to detect, resist, and break Genjutsu by controlling her chakra as seen during the Bell Test and later in Konoha Crush Arc. Without Kakashis instruction, Sakura would never have had the foundation that allowed her to become Tsunades disciple.

@@ShadowHokageAJ Kakashis chakra control lessons were a major plot point in the Konoha Crush Arc for Sakura, did you miss those chapters? She was the only genin besides Shikamaru who withstood the Genjutsu -- so clearly pretty important. Also, Sakura began dedicated training with her Master before either Naruto or Sasuke, it was her decision to use the chakra control Kakashi taught her in the field of medical ninjutsu and, in case you forgot -- Kakashi isn't a medical ninja. You're being disingenuous. I get it's a funny meme, but you're just wrong. Before Sakura began her discipline under Tsunade there are several moments in the manga that show Kakashi teaching her as well as the fruits of that labor, again of all the genin only her and Shikamaru, who graduated to chunin that day, could release the Genjutsu by controlling their chakra

This is actually very common. Having someone be the best at something almost always means they can’t teach/coach it. You look at sports (modern era) and all the best players make at best average coaches and if they have sons that play their sport they are always worst than their fathers when the father was like an all time great. Then all the players that were like career backups somehow end up becoming some of the best coaches of their era.

A subject that i think is fun to talk about in naruto is teaching, Naruto had a bunch of learning impariments, Iruke used a more humane approache, which kept naruto engaged, Kakashi simply wasnt capable of teaching naruto, Jiraya could teach more because of his overwhelming knoledge and having a similar profile than naruto, he knew some tricks in dealing with passionate but unfocused kids but the best teacher in the whole naruto series was..... Naruto himself! he teach Konohamaru with ease kage bunshing nojutsu, and the rasegan, some A-Rank techniches the reason to this i think is that internalized so much the failure of his teachers approaches that he build a bunch of personalized learning methods

Funnily enough I was thinking about Kakashi as a sensei the other day, more specifically I was thinking about what it would look like if you switched Kakashi and Master Roshi at the start of their respective mentorships. If you look at the fanfic interpretation of Kakashi's tutelage of team 7 you find a general opinion that he takes them on missions, lectures them on teamwork and otherwise ignores them. However if you actually stop to think about it (in the context of the genuine article) his hands off approach their technical skills actually makes sense, because he doesn't need to teach them how to use chakra or shuriken or taijutsu. Why? Because they've already been trained in that for several years. What they haven't learned is unit cohesion and group combat tactics. Which is exactly what he teaches them, plus tips and admonitions to help them get their minds and approach to situations right. Flashbacks in the anime also show that he did genuinely care about his students' wellbeing outside of work, like the one of him coming through Naruto's window with groceries. Kakashi is awesome.

While he may not have been the "best teacher" I certainly don't think he was the worst either. The plot progression threw a lot of chaos his way and at least he never gave up on them. Hell he was the only other ninja left awake after the infinite tsukuyomi hit. That's something. I kinda recall him saving their naive asses a few times. At least he never shirked his failures either. To put it as straightforward as possible, he needed sasuke to grow in power one way or another. Whether that was him knowingly (which I doubt) or unknowingly sending him down a dark road. Itachi knew that as soon as he died Danzo, Orochimaru, and Madara were coming for sasuke at the bare minimum. If he even let sasuke believe he was close to reaching him, or to lose the spark all uchiha draw power from, he’d be as good as dead. People love to shout retcon without giving it a second thought but this seems to be the case. He didn’t even kill any of the shinobi who got in his way despite being capable to whenever he wanted. If he was intended to just be straight up evil Asuma, Kurenai, gai, and jiraya would all have died, that isn’t what happened though. Evidence: the series and the fact that that’s what actually happened, but sasuke was prepared and strong enough to deal with at least two of the three.

Honestly the academy curriculum is a joke. Seriously compare the education system to other shows. To graduate the ninja academy, students need to master a simple clone jutsu, plus basic ninja skills. Really? Look at Harry Potter. At least Wizards were trained in a variety of areas. The academy should not be letting 12 year olds go out into a world where they risk their lives with little to no skills. At least have them graduate at 16. They needed more time to develop actual skills. Chakra control exercises like tree walking and water walking could have been easily done in the academy. Also, train students in their respective elements. The academy could have offered more elective courses like genjutsu, medical ninjutsu, Fuinjutsu, and using weapons like swords, staffs, nunchucks. That way ninjas could be better prepared for the real world.

I'll play Devil's Advocate here. Not every ninja grows up to be a jonin, some are even lifelong genin in canon. With that in mind I think that her growth in part one isn't too bad. Kakashi did show Sakura her strong points as a shinobi, which were her studious nature and her chakra control. He also knew about her desire to be close to Sasuke and protect him, and used that to encourage her. Those traits are instrumental in her becoming a medical ninja and ultimately succeeding Tsunade.

Its shitty to feel abandoned by authority figures that you will straight up be told are supposed to help you shape the rest of your life. You have to look at the whole story in context. His character as a kid, his ideology, and everything he was trained to do until right before becoming a teacher. He was an assassin still in his young age with a pretty negative outlook on the world. Where as compared to Jiraiya, basically summarizing it with, he was offered the role of hokage, who had also trained the 4th Hokage. He was on another level. Kakashi kind of grew with his own students in a way. He matured through Naruto and Sasuke as apposed to being the father figure like Jiraya

I think another problem is that he really was a prodigy but this also left him scratching his head for ways to teach people without his ridiculous acumen. Naruto is quite comparable to a child with Aspergers or some other named developmental disorder which really requires abstract and yet direct methods of teaching. Sakura was not a gifted ninja and frankly didn't think of ninjas as anything more then getting laid. And failed Sasuke the most because he was the one most like Kakashi. Kakashi wanted Sasuke to see that revenge was just destructive to those who pursue it but failed to understand that revenge was the ONLY thing keeping Sasuke going, so giving that up would mean that he didn't have a reason to live anymore and also that Itachi was also a threat to the people that Kakashi wanted Sasuke to serve but just ignore that part. Yeah, no. Kakashi was traumatized by the Ninja world itself, but Sasuke was traumatized by a single person that was still a threat to come after him and his loved ones again.

@@prolastmedia6171 Uhh, he didn't taught Naruto Rasenshuriken, that was a technique developed by Naruto himself when he trained, Kakashi only taught him what chakra nature he had, how to control it and how to use clone jutsu to train faster to learn a powerful technique, and that was AFTER 3 years have passed and we talking about the original series here. In the original series, Kakashi didn't taught him anything, Jiraiya was the one who took care of Naruto's training instead because Jiraiya asked that since Naruto was a special case for being a jinchuriki so it was harder to teach him something.

I don't care if he didn't teach Sakura anything, because I don't like Sakura, but this post is not about hate its about practicality Asuka didn't teach Ino anything besides teamwork and neither did Kurenai. The fact is Salura's talents weren't applicable to anything he could 6each as a kunoichi usually has other skills and talents that must be honed on their own or by another kunoichi. My point is Sakura's destiny was NEVER genjutsu it was medical techniques and taijutsu(modified by medical enhancements), that's what she became good at and honestly Kakashi knows nothing about medical techniques. Even if she had a slight aptitude for genjutsu she likely would have just been mid tier at best and would never outshine Ino a Yamanaka at that so don't even try.

In defense of Kakashi, he prioritized Sasuke’s training because of the immediate threat of Orochimaru. Sakura doesn’t make it out of the prelims so Sasuke is further prioritized for his fight against Gaara. Kakashi realizes Naruto also needs training as he made it to the finals as well and Jiraiya is an even better teacher than he is so perfect . Literally right after the exams end Kakashi is put into a coma by Itachi so not much he can do there. They get Tsunade back and Sasuke immediately leaves the village. Kakashi really didn’t have the time to teach all of them during part 1

i dont think its necessary his fault, I doubt other ninja could have kept Team 7, we have a jinchurki and a Uchiha that is crazy about being powerful and revenge, basically the worst team any teacher could have gotten. After Naruto met Jiraiya, Sasuke surely need to find someone at that level in order to surpass Naruto and defeat Itachi, and Sakura need someone similar to catch up, its sort of Kakashi's misfortune to get this combo. Besides, he did lay the groundwork for Team 7 to remember that friends are the most important, which subtlety affect Naruto and Sasuke's behavior. and he manage to prevent tons of academy graduates that didnt understand that to become genin, saving a lot of lives. Its unfair to compare him to Asuma as they already have the 3 clan combo early on, solving their teamwork issue even before they form the genin team, while Team 7 are totally incompatible right from the start, and Kakashi doesnt have long to teach them either before he is knock out by Itachi and then Sasuke left with Sound 4

As always in life, it is not due to one pivotal flaw or mishap. Kakashi was 26-27 during the first era of Naruto. He was still learning how to convey his ideals and most importantly, how to interpret his student’s downsides. A lot of unfortunate events unraveled during Team 7’s development which led to Sasuke leaving the village. Ultimately, I think there is no denying that Kakashi also made mistakes but the situation every member of that team faced didn’t contribute to finding the right path. I would love to see your opinions on this.
