Ever since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, free passage for merchant ships on the Rhine has been guaranteed by all bordering states. So the idea of shipping stuff across a basically internationalised waterway wasn't such a novel idea. Now, if Nazi Germany wanted to block that, there's probably not much that Switzerland could've done about it, but as everyone including Germany profited from that trade, they didn't prevent it.
@alihamzacekinmez6269
@alihamzacekinmez6269 5 жыл бұрын
varana312 How do you make profit from passing merchant ships thorough your country on a river ? Provided you don't receive money for passing. If you collect a fee then you make money out of it. If you don't, then owner makes the profit, not you.
@lukashei1870
@lukashei1870 5 жыл бұрын
Ali Hamza Çekinmez Back then they really did not, because they occupied all the other countries. But usually, the trade would habe had to be run through customs multiple times. Also, the Rhine forms a natural border. Imagine if both France and Germany started to demand documents every time a ship crossed the center of the stream...
@varana
@varana 5 жыл бұрын
Ali Hamza Çekinmez: "Profit" not only in the literal sense. In other words, it was advantageous for Germany to let trade to and from Switzerland pass unhindered along the Rhine. Switzerland was neutral and could trade with nations that Germany could not, imported goods were vital to Switzerland, and Germany wanted a decent relationship with Switzerland for various reasons. Also, you _can_ profit from a free passage, indirectly - there will be cities along the river with trading and shipping companies that benefit from a free waterway and increased traffic, and other companies in your country also have easier and cheaper access to raw materials and supply and markets for their goods. So you stimulate the economy along the river, and that means more business, more taxes, more goods, more jobs, more taxes, and so on. ;)

I grew up in Bolivia (12 years) and it's hilarious how patriotic people are over the sea they don't have. They act very entitled to it and bitter towards Chile even after 130+ years. They still have this weird notion that maybe one day they'll get it back. Once when I was in high school, we had to write poems about whatever, and one girl in my class wrote this super idealistic poem about the sea. It's a really touchy subject and it's always been quite hilarious to me.

Funny thing is that some might think of Bolivia has a S***hole state but at least they have an ocean of natural gas to keep warm while a certain long neighbor has to freeze because they do not produce enough natural gas. Bolivia prohibits gas sales to Chile. So in one winter in which Chile had a nat. gas shortage. Argentina supplied Chile with nat. gas when they could while Bolivia supplied Argentina. So whats wrong with that picture. Ha Ha!

This gave rise to many interesting stories such as General Zhukov loved coke so the Coka Cola company made crystal cola for him to have a secret "American vodka" stash. The pepsi navy story came from the many years of Soviets importing Pepsi instead of Coka Cola. In 1989, when the Soviets can't pay up, they offered Pepsi co a chunk of their navy.

Was actually completely unsurprised about the river thing. Many of the largest naval battles in Chinese history took place on the Yangtze River, such as battle of red cliffs. However because it's a river the navies were not "permanent" but rather soldiers knew both land and naval combat, a bit like marines.

The Danube river is agreed to be international waters by a UN treaty. All chokepoint passages that are the only way out for any one country, are legally required to be considered international waters. Like the Bosporus strait and the Strait of Gibraltar

River Drina separates Serbia from Bosnia and Herzegovina.. in 3 wars drina was used in war and there was naval warefare there.. that is one of examples... Danube was used by Austro-hungarian army to bomb Belgrade from the river with warship.. same did the Germany in ww2. so yea that is why Serbia has a navy.

Yeah summery of this whole video, "Why do Landlocked Countries have Navies?" because of rivers and lakes duh. Still the Switzerland one does amuse me since it isn't so much a river Navy, as much as an ocean Navy that uses an international river to get in and out. (Side note I realize Switzerland isn't the only country like this just the one that stood out most to me.)

@makkihd6507
@makkihd6507 4 жыл бұрын
Almost right. There ships were actually built by the koreans, which were slaves of the mongolians. Because of being forced to sail under the mongolian flag (the mongolians killed all the wifes and childrens) they weren't that motivated. Another reason why there faild, was a strongr storm "the Kamikaze". Yeah and now you can google the history of kamikaze and you will find out why the japenese did this in WW II.

The Swiss Army also has some speed-boats with machine-guns or machine-canons, but they are part of combat engineers (Genietruppe); I think they are stationed at the Lac Léman. Funny thing: Each unit had to make a video to present themselves to attract new recruits (in Switzerland we have a militia-army, i.e. basically every man has to make military service). Their video was so well made that they got too many conscripts who wanted to join them and since then the video isn't shown anymore to new conscripts.
