Why Lexi Hull Is VERY CRUCIAL To The Indiana Fever’s Success
Lexi Hull is the best defensive player on the Indiana Fever. Even so, she seems to be an offensive liability. Is Lexi Hull’s defensive abilities enough to outweigh her offensive struggles? Furthermore, should Lexi Hull be a full time starter for the Indiana Fever? In this video, I break it down.

I love this. I've been asking you for it. Man, that's a GREAT, spot-on assessment of Lexi. If she were to improve her 3Pt % to "threat" level, she would be absolutely indispensable. Coach Sides should have had Lexi Hull practicing her 3Pt shots like Steph Curry practices. Just that one change for the team RIGHT THERE could make them contenders.

Hope Sides is watching??? Now that’s a waste of time, Sides pays no attention to anything but her own ideas. Look at the way they played the first half of the season and Sides could not see what was needed. (Carter could see it but not Sides) Sides prefers old school BB, slower more structured set out plays. Whereas now she appears to be forced to step outside her comfort zone and they are playing to C.C.’s strengths, higher paced transition plays, fast paced run and gun game and the difference is delightfully alarming.

Hull has always been one of my favorite players from her Stanford days. I knew she was capable of being a very good player. In the begining of the season, I thought that she was playing to fast if that makes sense. Shes a great athlete with an unbelievalbe motor. Shes only 3 years in. I hope that this past game is the game where she has finally put it all together and figured it out. She can be a two-way star in this league.

Lexie is really not playing within a defensive system. She is basically playing several players roles. Crazy how much territory she covers each defensive play. She is the polar opposite of CC. She rest on offense and plays hard on defense. CC loss a lot of assist on blown layups by Hull. Never seen so many wide open snowbirds(layups my day) missed by one player. I hope Lexie and Katie Lou start to hit 3's. I think their problem is they have never shot 3's in a game with no one guarding them. They are all sniffing CC.

Agree 100% about Lexi. She is the ideal 6th woman. She comes in with defensive intensity which lifts the other players effort levels. I also agree with the comments about Temi coming back and boosting both the offense and the defense over Smith. There is a highlight in I believe one of the Lynx games where Temi passes the ball ahead to CC then runs past Clark, past the defense and gets a pinpoint bounce pass for a layup. It’s supposed to be a highlight for CC but it’s Temi that makes that play happen. Keep up the good work.

We need scorers and defenders. We got to many one dimensional players. The real problem with this team is that they’re strength should be their scoring with a guard like cc and how she passes the ball but they still miss to many easy bunnies around the basketball and wide open shots. If they’re get better with this they could simply outscore some teams instead of having to defends so much. The offense is the strength of this team not the defense, it’s just the way they constructed this team

They would, but Carter is incorrect. Right after he claims that she plays the 4 spot he plays an example and both AB and NS are on the floor, so LH is playing the 3 spot. She's getting posted up, but Carter seems to be confused that just because she's getting posted up, that she must be playing the 4 spot. Which obviously isn't the case. This is an example of Carter not always having the greatest basketball IQ or understanding. I noticed as I went through that most of the plays clearly had 2 bigs on the floor in addition to Lexi Hull so LH wasn't playing the 4 spot in the clips in this video. The fact is that LH comes into the 3 spot almost exclusively, and doesn't play the 4 spot. This is just Carter confusing a 3 getting posted up with believing that equates to that 3 playing the 4 spot. LH is an undersized 3, only 6'1" (whereas KLS is 6'3" and other teams have 3's who are 6'4") so of course they post up LH. Also, if as a result of switches LH is forced to guard a big of course the big is going to post her up and use that several inch height advantage (as well as being thicker and more physical than LH). But switches are a normal part of the game and, again, don't mean LH is playing the 4 spot. She's not, she's playing the 3 spot.

Lexie's career 3-pt percentage in her college career was 37.4% on 511 attempts. But, her shooting percentages since joining Indiana Fever have been poor all three years (for regular field goals and 3pointers). Any idea why the difference is so dramatic between college and WNBA? Seems like most of her 3-point attempts this year should be pretty wide open without Caitlin drawing the defensive gravity.
@NADRIPmusic
@NADRIPmusic 2 ай бұрын
Hi Carter you did a good job on this one. Although you clearly had a positive opinion to start, you remained fairly objective and let the evidence guide your analysis. You also gave relevant statistical information and explained coaching decisions about Lexi Hull's use. This is one of your best videos as a result. One "knock" or "nit" is you didn't show any of Lexi Hull's defensive failures. Yes, she is a high effort player and can catch people's eyes on plays like you showed with her effort. But she's also on the #6 best player on the Fever in Defensive Win Share, behind Temi Fagbeni, behind Erica Wheeler, behind Aliya Boston, behind Caitlyn Clark, behind Katie Lou Samuelson. So, objectively, all 5 of these players are better defenders than Lexi Hull. Lexi Hull looks good, at times, but she also has breakdowns on defense, which you don't show. If she was always only doing what you show defensively, she wouldn't be #6 at Defensive Win Share. So there was some bias that came in on what you showed for defensive clips. You should always try to show at least one good and at least one bad example of everything a player does, just like you showed many bad things Lexi Hull does offensively but also one good thing (cutting). You should have shown where Lexi Hull gets beaten and why. A comment you made was that it seemed to you that Coach Sides plays LH mainly at the 4, but then you showed a clip and both Aliya Boston and Nalyssa Smith were on the floor, so LH was playing the 3, not the 4. Most of the other clips I saw the same, 2 other bigs on the floor so LH playing the 3, not the 4. Just because LH is getting posted up doesn't mean she's playing the 4. You have to understand that LH is an undersized 3. There are good 3's in the WNBA who are 6'4". KLS, who starts at the 3 for the Fever, is 6'3". LH is 6'1". So when LH comes in at the 3, of course a taller 3 is going to post her up. And sometimes LH will have to switch defensively and maybe guard a 4, but she's still playing the 3, just had to switch. That doesn't mean LH is playing the 4, just because she's getting posted up. That just means she's undersized for the position she's playing. And one place she gets beaten is when she gets posted up, which is why she's overall not such a great defender. Because many teams have a much taller 3 they can use to post her up and take advantage of her, or if she switches to a big those players can easily take advantage of her. But that's not the only way she gets beaten on defense, because even though she's high effort, she's only mediocre skill level, and she will allow players to beat her other ways as well. In response to the title of your video, I looked at some basic stats. The Fever have played 26 games and are 11-15. LH has played in 20 of those games in which the Fever are 8-12. So in the 6 games where LH did not play at all the Fever are 3-3. That's not really showing LH is so vital as your video title suggests. Well, I thought, what if we exclude games where LH only played 5 mins or less? In games where LH played 2-5 minutes, the Fever are 1-2. She only played 5 minutes in the Fever's first win against the Phoenix Mercury which was a huge win for the Fever and kind of shows that they don't really need LH to win. The Fever did play and beat Phoenix again but the 2nd time Phoenix had a lot of injuries and players out so that was a much easier game the 2nd time. So in games where LH played over 5 minutes the Fever are 7-10, and 4-5 in games where she had little impact (5 minutes or less, or didn't play at all). Again, it doesn't make a strong case that LH is all that important. Well, I thought, what if we exclude games where LH played 10 minutes or less? In games where LH played 6-10 minutes, the Fever are 2-3. The wins are against Atlanta and Washington. Actually in the Fever's other win against Atlanta, LH only played 11 minutes, so as the 10 minute cut is kind of arbitrary, had I said, 6-11 minutes instead of 6-10 minutes, then the Fever would have been 3-3 in these games. But I won't do that, I'll stick what 6-10 minutes. But I will note that LH was not a big factor in either of the Fever's wins against Atlanta, and, really, LH doesn't match up well against that team, not on offense nor on defense, so it's understandable why her limits haven't been more when playing them. Anyway, this leads to in games where LH played over 10 minutes, the Fever are 5-7, and 6-8 in games where she is more limited. Again, the narrative of LH being all that important to the Fever's success isn't there. Now, to be as fair as I can be to LH, in games where she played 20+ minutes, the Fever are 3-3. But, again, in games where LH didn't play at all, they are also 3-3. So, I don't think a 50% win rate is enough to make a convincing argument that LH is hugely important to the Fever's success. The Fever are 50% win rate in the 6 games where LH had the biggest impact in terms of minutes, but the Fever are also 50% win rate in the 6 games where LH had the least impact in terms of minutes (didn't play at all). Overall, I think LH is kind of double edged, and hurts the Fever almost as much as she helps them. She can be used in selective situations, but I think once TF comes back and is healthy, LH should start to see a lot less minutes, and for good reason. I like LH, because I like effort players, and he's pretty to boot, but she's not "VERY CRUCIAL to the Indiana Fever's Success" and the Fever will be better once she's back to playing very limited, very situational minutes.

Defensive Win Shares and Defensive Rating are not the perfect stats to show the better defender. Especially for benchplayers en for teams where the coach makes decisions like often putting them in the game with certain other players or at certain times that influences the Win Shares of players. In any case, LH is beter than Katie Lou Samuelson and Erica Wheeler for DWS and for DRtg. She also happens to be best of all for +/- per 100 possessions.
@NADRIPmusic
@NADRIPmusic 2 ай бұрын
@@moordapkamp7754 Actually what you say applies only to Defensive Rating. Defensive Win Share is the perfect stat for such a person, since it adjusts for the defensive contributions of the other players on the floor, ie if someone is on the floor with 4 other relatively strong defenders then they will tend to help and make success easier than if someone is on the floor with 4 other relatively weaker defenders. So, whatever situation a player is put into, the Defensive Win Share stat will account for that, which is why Defensive Win Share should be the main stat one looks at for such a player and Defensive Rating can be misleading. Defensive Win Share for the best Fever defenders are: 1) Temi Fagbenli 0.048, 2) Erica Wheeler 0.047, 3) Aliya Boston 0.035, 4) Caitlyn Clark 0.028, 5) Katie Lou Samuelson 0.024, 6) Lexie Hull 0.019. Not sure how you could have gotten this wrong. It's just reading stats. I don't even look at +/- since it's considered the least reliable stat. So, according to your result and your ability to read that stat correctly (which is in doubt), by that stat Lexie Hull would apparently be a better player overall than Caitlyn Clark and Aliya Boston, which is obviously untrue. IE no team in the league would pick Lexie Hull over Caitlyn Clark. So that stat is just broken. You need stats that explain the reality of how other teams' value players, and Lexie Hull have poor offensive stats and a mid-tier defensive win fits that. Overall, the fact you couldn't even read the stats correctly makes me doubt your ability to discuss them intelligently.

@@NADRIPmusic I use a different website than you. But that these stats contradict eachother says enough. I deduced that you used wnba stats website. @@moordapkamp7754 I always try to improve my analysis techniques so appreciate your mentioning the discrepancy. I will say that I trust the WNBA / NBA websites more than a 3rd party - the WNBA stats are "official" - so the site you're using, if it gives you different results as you mention, is "officially" wrong. General principle: the WNBA default mode to view Defensive Win Share is per game, so that is the one they recommend as the best interpretation of that stat. In support of the general principle above, I note that one important thing Defensive Win Share does in laymen's terms is to compare a player's individual defensive rating to the league average and give a player credit based on the number of minutes played and then kind of divide this share over a teams number of wins. Therefore, if you fail to view the stat on a per game basis, you eliminate the difference between Defensive Win Share and Defensive Rating, so essentially Defensive Win Share on a per minute basis should be merely Defensive Rating, the more basic stat, since you've undone the adjustments to Defensive Rating that creates Defensive Win Share when you view it on a per minute instead of per game basis. To test that, I tried viewing the players on a per 48 or whatever minute basis and it appeared to be exactly the same order as Defensive Rating gives (whether Defensive Rating is viewed on a per minute or per game basis). In your earlier objection you were quite correct on the flaws of Defensive Rating, as you said it is dependent on when a player like LH who plays part time minutes is inserted, and other problems, which is why Defensive Win Share is preferable. So to get Defensive Win Share you must view it on a per game basis. Hope this helps you on your journey to better using stats to understand player performance!

I’m hearing a lot of talk about a big trade involving the Fever. I consider this a bad idea. The fever have made great use of the Olympic break. We need to see how much they have improved and how much Sides team building has helped. We have all seen the upside potential of this team. If they can play at that level and Fagbenle returns I wouldn’t make changes till the off season.

It would be interesting to get your opinion on what Indiana needs to get to the next level. From what I see they need am athletic forward who can match up. It seems like the team lacks some foot speed.

For me all I can do is use ehat little I know about BB teams. So, I analogize Fever to CC's Hawkeyes. To wit: Clark = Clark (natch) A Boston = H Stuelke K Mitchell = K Martin or S Affolter (Mitchell can shoot 3s but needs to backdoor cut more! As u have said.) Lexi Hull =? Gabbie Marshall* Both seem to display the same relentless effort & defensive determination. Hull is taller but shows the effort and same quickness to go out & contest 3 ptrs. Marshall is quick & no one can forget "The Block" v Nenraska. Gabbie is prob a better 3 point shooter (if left alone like Hill was CC would find her). Both can harass ball handler out past the arc. Hull prob bettrr in the paint (Marshall usually among the shortest on the court). Marshall's role was to cut off or prevent a pass to a good 3-point shooter hanging out past the arc. Marshall often fought 10:19 to free up opponent's best shooter. As for minutes, Marshall seemed to play more minutes (only Clark had more) and score fewer points in the close, key games. Much of what Gabbie Marshall contributed never made the box score but the HUGE plays made the highlight reels. I need to watch more games to further evaluate Lexi Hull's D * DISCLAIMER:: My fav Hawkeye was Gabbie Marshall due to her effort & teamwork.

Carter! Did you see the game against the Mercury when Kahleah Copper went off on us with a ton of points? Did you see the foul called against Lexi under the rim? She didn't foul Copper, who fell back on the floor, then said, "You can't f*** with me." Lexi just threw her arms up and walked away because she didn't foul Copper. I think, if you know how to flop, you can get the refs to call fouls for you.

Lexi, Kelsey and Caitlin all run around like jackrabbits. Boston runs pretty good, we need one more runner for the starting 5. Britney Stewart still runs around like a kid, despite her age and she will be a free agent. That's a Championship lineup 🏆

Ok Carter you convinced me to stay with Lexi. However, Lexi needs to shoot 500-1000 3 pointer practice shots from the two corners and hit 40% in practice which may translate to 33% in the game.

Lexi is running the Fever defense, yelling at the others to go wherever she wants. She's a dawg. She and Katie Louuu was doing good 3v3... i think like CC she needed the rest since she's so active during defense.. i think they both will start hitting 3s again.

KLS has been a good 3pt shooter all her career and actually is only slightly off this season, still hitting over 30% of her 3's so not at her best rate but not in a huge slump. A player like KW is in a slump, hitting 3's in the 20s% this season while hitting them at a 40% clip last season. That's a player who has shown she can hit the 3 over the course of a season so you could say "will start hitting 3s again" about someone like KW. But LH has never been a good 3 point shooter. She's shooting in the 20s% this season. She shot in the 20s% last season. There's no "again" for her she's never been a good shooter so it's not just a slump for her rather a more permanent condition. She's a high effort but very mediocre skill player who will never be good on offense at the pro level who will never be all that great a defender either, undersized at the 3 spot, despite her effort often outmatched in the paint, outquicked on the perimeter, and gets beaten a lot, which is why LH fouls at a rate that over a 40 minute game like CC plays would be 6 fouls a game. LH is never going to be much better than she is now, an offensive liability who is high effort but only mediocre skill on defense.

I agree with you Mr Carter, defense wins championships. Personally I like most fans love watching great offense scoring, not so much watching defensive plays Even though offense is the best defense in war, in basketball, both are as equally vital in winning. Caitlin Clark knows this better than anyone, as she knows first hand it was great defense by the SC Gamecocks that defeated her Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2024 championship game. Iowa Hawkeyes with Caitlin Clark was the best scoring offense in the 2024 College rankings, but SC Gamecocks great defense shut down their offense and prevented Iowa from winning the championship game. Am I correct on this assessment Mr Carter ?

I think there is a difference between defensive effort and defensive intensity. Lexi Hull has enough effort for the entire team combined, but i think AB is actually their best defender, because her defensive instincts and IQ are way up there with the best of em. I really like Lexi, what she can give you in 4-5min spurts is like a jolt of electricity that can fuel their offense tremendously. But she isnt the smartest defender. She kinda is like a Javell McGee on the warriors, comes in for 3-4 min, instant lob treath, high energy and just gives the team some energy to come out of a slump. But just as Javell wasn't ever a starter for the warriors neither should Lexi. They have a super important role. They are a change of pace player, a shot of adrenaline, an temporary fix all type of player to some difficult problems other teams might present. But her downside are too great. She isnt a shooting treat, she is an average at best ball handler and passer, and isnt particularly good at any half court offense either.

Hull could have more shine if she would make the wide open layups on the run aheads. She doesnt just miss the layup she misses it badly like shes throwing a brick at the backboard. She has to play good defense as its the only way she will get on the court.
