Worldbuilding in this is crack. When it spurs the head canon and I find myself imagining myself in that world that's it. I don't know what else compares other than FMA
@VogJam3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can definitely see that. That’s the sort of thing I mean about how the worldbuilding draws you in. It’s got that balance perfectly between showing the viewer that there’s a lot more detail to the world, but not overwhelming them with lore and exposition.

I usually stray away from stories where the central themes are loss and death, but it’s a testament to the unique allure of Made in Abyss that keeps me craving more even though I know it’s tragic and painful. Great analysis. Thank you for writing this video essay.
@VogJam3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah, knowing that it’s going to be a painful ride is all part of the Made in Abyss experience. For me, it’s the draw of the mystery that keeps pulling me back despite that.
@Nakaska3 жыл бұрын
I just can't stop thinking about it. I finished watching the movie over a month ago and have watched many other things since yet I always come back with my thoughts to this show. What is the Abyss? Does it end? So many questions. Even the characters in the show keep asking themselves what makes the Abyss so magnetic which is so meta when you think about it. Also, one of my favourite little details in the show is that of all the characters, we get to hear the most inner thoughts from the one who is a robot which makes us question even more his true nature. It's just perfect. Even the wait for the next season is part of the experience.
@VogJam3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That’s a neat point about Reg being the most introspective, I hadn’t thought of it like that. I think what’s really impressive about MiA’s meta side is that as cool as that concept is, it puts the work in everywhere else to build up to that. The Abyss reflecting the mystery of the story doesn’t work if the story is weak, or the worldbuilding is lazy, or the characters are uninteresting. There’s a lot of work that goes into it getting the viewer invested before you can turn the lens around and make them question how invested they are.

this was really great! i've watched lots of made in abyss video essays but never one that touched on how we as the viewer are also giving up something to see the bottom, our comfort. i'd never even thought about that before and it gave me even more love for a series that i thought i'd seen every possible analysis of. really great video !! :)

I'm interested to know your thoughts on the Made in Abyss film. Also if you are looking for other shows to disect, look no futher than Infinity Train. It is definitely right up your alley.
@VogJam3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah, a few people have mentioned the movie, so I might need to do something on it. I’ve actually seen Infinity Train. The pilot looked really promising when it came out but I found the first season kind of underwhelming, gave up on it, then came back and binged seasons 2 & 3 which were incredible, then waited for season 4 and felt underwhelmed again. So yeah, I’m kind of up and down on that show. The concept is brilliant and I know the show is capable of living up to that premise, I just hope they get another chance to prove it because I’ve hear the future of the series is in doubt.
@clauliz55023 жыл бұрын
@@VogJam I think book 4 was underwhelming mostly cause it is the last one before stopping even though that was not at all the intent. The creator actually confirmed that Book 5 is already storyboarded but then CN pulled the plug. Book 4 was merely a breather after the drama of 3
@VogJam3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there’s definitely more story to be told, so it would be disappointing if they were forced to end on a weaker chapter. Especially after it was showing that it was finding a way to lean into darker storytelling after the movie to HBO.

I can sum your entire video in one word: Mysterybait People love that, there is no need to overthink something so basic. BTW mysterybait is not good by itself if all you are looking for is more content and not good answers. Almost no story does it right.
@VogJam3 жыл бұрын
That's fair, I would say that MiA does do a particularly good job on selling the audience its mystery though. I don't really go into it here but there's definitely a sense that the story is set up in a way that it depends on its questions and how satisfied people eventually end up with the story will depend on its answers.
