Why most carriers don''t work directly with shippers?

If you provide good service, this can work. The problem comes up when there are late pickups or deliveries and updates don’t happen. The reason brokers have a business is because they can chase down updates and vet the carriers. Many shippers don’t deal direct with carriers because they don’t have time or ability to vet the carriers. There are good carriers, for sure, but there are a ton of disreputable carriers. There is a lot of risk for shippers because of this.

But that’s the issue….carriers take all the risk..they are the ones out in the field driving, making sure dot doesn’t pull you over and give tickets, carriers are the foot soldiers doing all the hard work. To say there are bad carriers is incorrect, no driver wants to be late but traffic and soooo many other variables are out of their hands.

It is not easy to get direct customers unless you have already formed a relationship with them and they like and trust you. The mom and pops will use you but often don't understand or get disappointed if you are already under a load and can't cover there's. Big shippers would rather use brokers because they don't have time to deal with all the bs involved. Good points sir.

your best option is small companies. I was able to hook up with a direct company today. I asked to speak with the owner it was a small company, I told him I have couple of trucks available to the route he take his loads to, he seems interested, then I was able to take the chance and exchange info with him. Surprisingly, my load was through two brokers, I was able to get a really good direct line with excellent rate.

Salaam sis did you go directly to them? Also how do you know if it’s a small company if you live in a differrnt state or city?and what’s a good rate to ask i.e if the average rate for reefer is 4 ?

@@inaabdi743 i know this company because it’s in my town so I know they are a small company and I took couple of loads for them before but this time I wanted to get direct loads instead of let brokers cut the price on me. They will be tricky with u and ask you how much u want, then u have to be smart than them and never give them a price, tell them you need me more than I need you, I have the equipment and you don’t. Listen to their offer first, and even if u like their offer, don’t tell them okay right away, instead push it more up and tell them, you have drivers and trucks ready to work right away, then they will be more flexible to raise the price. It’s a game of how u are confident of ur skills how to play it right.

Scale is a big part. Many smaller companies don’t have the assets to handle their volume. They won’t take on the cost of dealing with multiple small trucking companies. Also, while their are good carriers, there are a ton of carriers that make everyone look bad. Shippers choose brokers because it’s cheaper to outsource the coverage, vetting and tracking.

Load paying $1000 and the broker is getting $200 that's 20% to the broker, this is why truckers say the brokers are stingy. Even the "big guy" only gets %10. God should have been a broker....

16%. Total shipping cost is 1200. Broker pays you 1000 and keeps 200.

How many hours are spent obtaining that shipper? What about the time spent once that load is picked up? Its a dance of taking care of the shipper and the carrier

When carriers deal with brokers, surety bond protects carriers from non-payments from brokers (or you would think so....)

So if the broker understands the cost of a carrier why does the broker take loads from shippers that dont pay enough to later pass them down fir less? You need a structured team to become a successful broker/carrier company.
