I'm actually kind of surprised that one of the reasons for uniforms in prisons wasn't mentioned, profit. Private prisons and even government holding facilities are responsible for clothing, feeding, and maintaining prisoners for long periods of time. If they allow prisoners to wear their own clothes, laundry expenses go up. If you make all prisoners wear the same clothing, you can buy from the same manufacturer, get bulk deals, and laundry is quick and "efficient" since every piece of clothing is the same. Some companies who own private prisons even have prisoners make prison uniforms and can save money that way. Uniforms, like everything else in the prison system, is a means of cost saving and profit boosting depending on the facility you are at

There's another one: Soldiers do not wear uniforms to be brought together. That's a lie. According to international martial law they have to wear uniforms to be recognised as so called combattants, that means as those that are actively fighting and therefore are allowed to be killed. Ok so I worked in a prison for a short time, and (where I was at least) they wore super baggy jeans and light blue shirts, and they could ditch the shirt for a white tank when out on the yard. The staff were the ones with the strict dress code. Also there was a funny training story they told us about a guy who just walked out of a prison because he had modified his jumpsuit to look like "free staff" (staff that aren't medical or custody)

It’s also to prevent stand over tactics and violence, I’ve heard stories where prison bullies will threaten other inmates for their clothes and shoes, it’s also easier to modify their own outfits to smuggle in drugs and other contraband.

That's similar as to why my country maintains a prison uniform. it prevents people from being targeted based on clothing. Another reason is that textiles used to be a major blue collar employer in my country, Both employers and prison reforms groups lobbied the government to have Prison uniforms produced within the prison system allowing inmates to learn job skills they needed on the outside. So various state governments spent a lot of money installing textile mills in certain prisons.

I'd definitely love to read what French philosopher, writer, historian and activist Michael Foucault had to write on this. In one of his major works, _Discipline and Punish_ (1977), he wrote, "is it surprising that prisons resemble factories, schools, barracks, hospitals, which all resemble prisons?" He also wrote about the use of the panopticon for controlling prisoners (through fear, IIRC).

As a former correctional officer, our inmates wore stripes to classify which pod they were in. Orange was max, green was female, and the black were all other inmates. When going to court, they were allowed to wear their own clothes but were shackled up until they entered the courtroom. Other than that, they always had to wear their stripes, even during transporting to another jail/prison or for dr appointments.

I lived in a small East Texas town in the 90’s where the local bar was across the street from the local jail. On Halloween one year, a prisoner got out and went to the bar (which had its usual costume party) in his orange jumpsuit . He was given drinks and everyone laughed at his awesome costume. How funny wearing an orange jumpsuit across the street from jail, hahaha! The police came and got him. Everyone laughed as he went back across the street to his cell realizing it wasn’t a costume.
