I'm English born to Scottish parents and hated going on holiday to visit family in Scotland...... my English accent was a magnet for every single idiot with a grudge........ there is a kind of victim culture that puts the blame for everything that happens to each and every one of them at the feet of the English....... I've been beaten spat on and verbally abused so many times as a kid it became a part of the holiday. I must admit i owe the fact that i can look after myself to the lessons in " a good kickin" I got on holiday........ Years later I joined the royal navy and served on a type 21 frigate built on the Clyde...... the visit to Glasgow during a small refit was like a stroll down memory lane........ abuse based purely on the accent you happen to have....... Having said that I would hate to see Scotland leave the UK. If it ever did happen it would be a total disaster . Industries with government contracts like ship building may very well loose contracts in favour of English or Irish ship yards, the military bases might have to relocate to England and the nuclear submarines to Plymouth RAF may have to stay for mutual safety and NATO commitments, but the army regiments would have to disband and leave......... investment in Scottish industry could be affected when Westminster is not involved in any backup capability....... Scotland is a pretty big country to run with only+/- 5 million people and no major industries to support the GDP....... not even the gas and oilfields can help them as production is getting more difficult and expensive whilst the world is looking for renewable energy............ If they try to join the EU there will have to be a hard border and different passports and different money and all financial support from Westminster would have to stop...... all the rules on business and fishing and farming and trade in general would have to change........... Scotland and the rest of the UK would be a weaker place if they left.......... perhaps the kids should not be taught to hate the English just because they are English

I'm from Scotland, went to England naïvely thinking it would be ok, I was 16, my name suddenly turned to ''Jock'' punched, spat at, ridiculed, I was shown my place. Having said that I would not like to see Scotland leave the UK, it would be a disaster for the English, Welsh and Irish, not just that up to 70% of the SAS are Scottish so that leaves the rest of the UK foreign military and political agenda in tatters, but unlike you you have inferred and where you are wrong, the wealth from oil and gas fields just opened plus the obvious wind and sea renewables and then the Hydro reopening in Scottish mountains would see Scotland become way more wealthy then Norway with the English reliant on Scottish renewables like the Shetland farms that are being piped directly down to England!. Exports from the uk include Gems and precious metals (Scotland due to its geological topography is abundant in these) Machinery including computers (Scotland hosts proud abundance innovation of Machinery, and a large above population average for the Gaming industry) Mineral fuels including oil ( we got pretty much all the UKs in the north so lol nuff said) (ps finance always sets up across the road from oil historically so a lot of the London post code finance institutes would put there post code in Scotland (you getting the picture yet?).......) Vehicles (fore front of pioneering work on biofuel engines) Pharmaceuticals (Scotland's labs are punching way above the population average on laboratory science and discovery) Electrical machinery and equipment (renewables nuff said) Optical, technical, and medical apparatus ( Scotland has always punched way above the population average for innovation in all these fields) Aircraft and spacecraft ( BEA systems and Trident are based in Scotland and now space launch sites are based here too...) and that's without talking about Tourism, Whisky, and the humble haggis that can be seen running round the hills at night!. There is an English arrogance that believes blindly that nobody can do without them!, they would swear blindly that the smaller nations are somehow leaching, yet the opposite is true, it is this denial that creates a willingness for the other nations to want to leave, the proof being in the reality of having left.
@kieranmaidenАй бұрын
Contrary to what you might believe or have experienced in the past, Scotland is hardly like that anymore. Current day Scotland couldn't give a shit where you are from provided you're a nice person and have no vested selfish interest in the lands of this country. We're a country pretty hard wired on preservation and conservation not hatred. Scotland leaving the UK had very little to do with this so called 'Hated of the English' that is only carried on by drunk football hooligans and people carrying a grudge from before they were born. (The same can also be said for both places, I've had countless experiences with English people shaming me for my Scottish accent. Most of the world bloody shames this country for the way we talk.) The reason for leaving the UK was solely driven by a want for Scotlands future to be in the hands of a Scottish democracy and driven by the Scottish people. Nothing to do with the English common man. Heres an analogy for your rude assumptions: If I went to america on holiday and happened to bump into members of the KKK in a bar, by your logic I should assume everyone in America is a racist bigot that wishes harm upon specific races. However in the real world it doesn't work like that. Your experiences shape your opinions, I get it. If I had to guess i'd say it's like 15% of Scotland that is xenophobic. The rest don't care. It's very cheap to paint an entire people's character from a number of experiences you've had personally. My guess is you've just been unlucky and met the few bigots that actually are like that. Hopefully your opinion changes the more people you meet. If not, atleast know that I dont hate you just because you're english, thats proposterous.

@@joemorton9200 There's also the fact that the 2014 vote may not be totally legitimate, not in that it was rigged or votes weren't counted but. there was initially supposed to be 3 options, Stay in the UK, Leave, or Stay with more autonomy. the Tories thinking the referendum wouldn't matter just made it the first 2, but because the polls were split 50/50 a few days before the actual vote, the tories said that stay would come with those increased powers, this confused a lot of voters and MAY have lead to a lot more support for no. there's also the fact that the last one was 8 years ago and it's a very different place today. there's many thousands of people like myself that were too young to vote in 2014 (I was 13 at the time, voting age is 16 here) and many older people that did vote in 2014 that aren't alive anymore, interestingly, the old are overwhemlingly in favour of staying, and the young the opposite, couple that with the EU thing which yes was quite unpopular here. and it's not at all crazy to believe we'd leave. The Tory government of the past 12 years has been a complete embarrasment to the nation on the internal and international stage and Scots as much as anyone are fucking sick of it, most people want to leave not to not be in the UK, but to be free from the twats in Westminster. whatever we do I hope we do it soon cause as much as I think independce is important for us moving forward and the SNP are the only route to that. @@Nathan-yk5km I think for a lot of Scots, independence isn't about being all on our own. It's about having our parliament represent us to it's fullest extent. A large amount of Scots feel "left out" by Westminster. But we are also, en masse, pro Europe. A lot of rural Scotland benefits from EU grants and projects, and we have a large European immigrant population which works hard and brings their ethics and culture along with them. An Independent Scotland that is part of the EU would mean that local issues are wholly settled by the Scottish Government, which we vote for, and we would still be part of the free trade, movement and cooperation that the EU provides. The idea that we are held ransom by Brussels (or indeed the Bundestag as someone else said) I think is a gross exaggeration, perhaps fuelled by anti-Europe sentiment. For a lot of Scottish people, being part of Europe and sharing in culture, experience and humanity is a desperately important thing, more so than being part of the UK. Both referenda I think are proof of that. Hence the call for a 2nd independence referendum. These, by the way, are not necessarily my views, but more of a summary of what I think I see from my fellow countrymen on a daily basis. It's fair to say, that the promise that David Cameron made to the people of Scotland in 2014; our only way to maintain our EU membership was to remain as part of the UK (at that point the EU basically said Scotland being a member as an independent country was nigh on impossible) and then his referendum on the subject which is now seemingly going to strip the people of Scotland of that promise, has left a lot of Scottish people feeling betrayed and abandoned. And I think correctly so. As it stands, I'm anti-indepenence at the moment, as I was in 2014, but I'm sat on an exceptionally thin knife edge on the subject.

The whole project is controlled by unelected eurocrats in Brussels, slapping regulation after regulation on countries with little regard what effect it will have on them, and you can ask Greece, Spain and other poorer countries what a mess the EU have been. No one thought Brexit isn't going to be messy, any divorce is. But the sooner it gets done, the better for the UK in the long run. Poor England. With Scotland's departure just a matter of when, and with Wales getting itchy feet not to mention Ireland moving closer to reunification, England - after isolating itself from Europe - is now on course to be isolated within what was once the United Kingdom. The English will realise that all their country has is faded glory. Vera Lynn, Blitz spirit, Churchill. That's where it all ended. Beyond that, nothing. No waters, no resources, no real exports. Money made in London stays in London (or swims to offshore accounts). Its establishment knows this hence the dirty tricks and propaganda desperately deployed to stop Scotland, and eventually the rest, leaving. RIP England.

The question is no longer if Scotland will leave the UK, the question is when Scotland will leave the UK? Come the imminent new Scottish independence referendum, I will vote in favour of Scotland leaving the UK. This will make me very, deeply sad in many respects, but no matter, it is the way I will vote. Personally I can no longer find any justification or see any benefit in living under the control of an expensively educated, and over privileged elite band of idiots. A nostalgic quango of halfwits who select certain parts of history to subvert, subdue, modify or exaggerate inorder to suit their narrow minded and overinflated image of themselves. A group of charlatans that constantly repeat factoids that are eagerly amplified in the press and media, until they are mistakenly accepted as fact. Scotland leaving the UK can only serve as a source of motivation to the Indy curious people of Wales. The Yes movement in Wales has grown to such an extent over the last few years, that the same question once asked of Scotland are now being asked of Wales. Not if Wales will leave the UK, but when will Wales leave the UK? Weep for poor England. No seriously, weep for poor England. There's a disaster capitalist storm coming England's way. Her public services such as the NHS, and her assets are soon to be colonized and controlled by the USA. A country led by a man who ironically given the anti Celtic/European attitudes held by many of the the xenophobes in little England, comes from Scottish/German parentage. it pays to be careful what you wish for, especially now that brexit is turning into a beaurocratic and financial nightmare - voting for brexit was a disaster mainly by people who had no idea what they were voting for and therefore deciding the scottish fate at the same time so there is small wonder that the scots are waiting for a referendum to be done very presently in order to save them from the uk fate of voting for stuff the voters there had no idea would bring a lot of tradeloss and unemployment, presently still masked by corona fallout, and at the same time the idiots who voted for brexit also had no idea of the accessory damage that would be caused to exchange and travel restrictions within the eu and right of stay. in short, the most important trading partner was voted out and the uk plus scotland voted a third world country tradewise, with all the great problems this entails - mainly loss of trade and travel. you can t do something more stupid and dangerous to livelihoods all over the uk, than this

I find it interesting that, according to public records, when things looked difficult for the Allies in WW2, Scottish nationalists would get busy seeking an understanding in their favour from the Nazis via their consul in Dublin. It fascinates me that today's SNP prefer to be run by the Franco-German led EU than continued alliance with the rest of the UK. But maybe old history can point us in the direction that might help explain this sort of political thinking.

@@legandrydirk Bravely spoken! Allow me to draw your attention to the following report in the Daily Telegraph dated 09/05/2001 under the title "Scots 'tried to set up Nazi alliance' ". This opens with these two paragraphs - "Scottish nationalists attempted to set up a German-Scottish alliance against England during the Second World War, according to MI6 files released today to the Public Record Office at Kew. They offered to proclaim an independent pro-German invasion of Scotland in the event of a Nazi invasion of England. In return, they asked that Germany stop bombing Scotland and give captured Scottish conscripts special treatment." The article goes on to describe in detail what was going on and finishes with the wry comment that "The files do not make clear if the contacts were ever followed up.", but mentions that MI5 "was already investigating the Scottish nationalists."

@songsmith31a4 жыл бұрын
@@legandrydirk I fail to see what today's calls for a referendum have to do with a broadsheet newspaper report of twenty years ago but passing that irrelevance by, the next paragraph states: "The proposals were made via the German legation in Dublin and came in the middle of a campaign by Winston Churchill to force the Irish government to stop the Germans using the legation as a centre for espionage and subversion." Mention is made of the unease of the German minister in Dublin, Edward Hempel, that an alliance with Scottish nationalists might give the British an excuse to have him expelled told Berlin that he "obviously could not have anything to do with the business in any shape or form." And there is more, but I think that anyone with a less prejudiced and closed mind will have already got the gist of what was deciphered by British code-breakers between 1940 and 1943 in messages sent to Berlin. It was the view of the Intelligence services that passed the information to government that "though individual members are mischievous and potentially dangerous, the organisation, (which called itself "The Scottish Independence Movement") albeit full of sound and fury, is of little consequence." No doubt the Public Record Office can verify all of this if fact and history matter to an informed brain.

The level of political integration in the EU is far lower than in the UK between the home nations so you're not comparing like with like. None of that applies to Scotland within the UK.
