I'm the audience for the ultralong Atlus JRPGS! It's about falling in love with the comfort of the system and getting inmersed and entrenched in them in a way that becomes your personality. It's like rewatching a show you love but just in one long playthrough. The longer the better for me, and I'll grind it out longer. The menus are sublime because you're going to be spending FOREVER staring at the same ones. There's joy in that

Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey are incredible games. They gave me the same sense of discovery I had with Ocarina of time and Mario 64. More importantly my nieces and nephews were blown away by them. I think the future of Nintendo is in good hands. The newer generations of developers have unquestionably inherited the DNA of the Nintendo legends.

For atlus RPGs, sure they are long games, but for me they are very easy games to digest. After 1 or 2 dungeons in persona, the games structure is made clear, and the parts where the story progresses are very clearly demarcated. You can quickly skip to these if you want, which makes the game run faster. Personally, during many sections of the game I listen to a podcast at the same time, which is pretty easy to do, and then devote full attention during the story/climatic areas. I get that the game is long, but it's pretty doable, usually the systems become very intuitive and you can understand what you want to see and what you don't.

1:09:29 In regard to the Metaphor time question, a bit of a long response: When it comes to long rpgs in general, I will tend to divide my game time into a long term game and a short term game. For long term games, when I have a long period of free time, I can invest a couple hours to knock out a dungeon or two. Doing it this way means I play for a couple months, but it means I don't get burnt out since the long breaks give me a feeling of "I want to play more" but also not too inconsistent where I lose interest either. My short term game time is something I play when I need a break or only have a bit of time available, and I can knock out a game in a couple days or weeks. This means I have one long term game I play, but can knock out a couple shorter games for variety. Now there are exceptions, especially when I am extremely familiar with a game like Metaphor or Xenoblade. I know the gameplay style, I know the flow of combat, I have a generally good idea of the pacing and what strategies I can use. In those circumstances, I personally can binge through that game in a month, but it ends up being the only game I play. If we average 3 hours a day (some days more than others, like weekends, some shorter, workdays), then that's 90 hours in a 30 day period. It is a lot, but it's an exceptional circumstance for a game I will be invested in. That way, even tho it is a lot of game to play, it ends up not feeling like it in that time span. Finally, the gameplay loop for turn based games means you can tend to multitask in sections with just combat and music you heard before. You can put on a podcast, video, or even movie, and just go through it during these more "grindy" sections. The platoform device you get the game also helps, as portable is just better in general since you can feel less restricted on where you are playing. Edit: Don't get me wrong tho, not every game should be this long, and taking breaks between long games is important. Make sure to plan mentally to go through a long game, then plan for that break after finishing the game. Mental health is more important in the long run

In the talk about Splatoon 3 at 1:48:30 , I don’t feel like you’re understanding what kind of story Splatoon is going for. It may take place 13,000 years from now, but it also parallels our modern day. It’s still 2024 and it’s still 2024 in the Splatoon universe. All of the characters age and grow in real time with each installment. The Squid Sisters were 18 in Splatoon 1 and now they’re all in their mid 20’s. If we got a “Splatoon 3 Ultimate” the world would not progress. I’m a massive Splatoon fan who’s put 2K hours into S3 alone and thousands more in the other games. Time needs to move forward and things need to change. I don’t understand the idea of the game being a “2.5” when so much has changed when you look more in-depth. So much gameplay wise changed between 2 and 3 and it makes it so I never want to play Splatoon 2 ever again. Splatoon 4 should come out in about another 2 years or so so we can see how much the world has changed. The era of the Squidbeak Splatoon and the Octarians is over. What happens next?

I beat Persona 4 Golden within a couple weeks and Persona 3 Reload earlier this year in a month. I 100%ed both. For the times I played through them, I binged through only them and every other game fell to the side. I did indeed find myself playing games more hours a day during those playthroughs.

I think the main thing to realize is that some people just enjoy the world and setting and aesthetic of the open-world game they're playing so much that they are HAPPY to do everything. It keeps them in the world longer with something to do. It's may not necessarily be that collecting feathers or Koroks or whatever is fun, but that it encourages them to explore the world and gives them some kind of minor satisfaction for doing so. I 100% Dragon Age Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor, Assassin's Creed 2, Sonic Frontiers, Jedi Fallen Order and Cyberpunk 2077 for example (I realize not all of these are traditional open world, but they do still have a lot of open areas to explore). Sure some of the busy work itself wasn't necessarily fun, but exploring the world and discovering new places and vistas was what made it worth it, and the collectible or busy work was simply something to mark my exploration. I do agree that as a player, you need to not get caught up in doing everything just to do it, and find your limits on what you enjoy and what you don't, so that you can't see the game through to the end in a way that you can have fun. On the flip side, I never finished the original Red Dead Redemption because the menial tasks took me away from the rest of the game in a not-fun way, and I didn't care much about the overall world, it was the characters that carried that game for me. Find that balance and have fun, that's the lesson.

I'll be honest haven't finished the vid so I'm sure you mentioned this but Nintendo is in a really great position where when these legends retire I don't think it will greatly affect the output of their work. The generation of people that were trained by the legends are now training the newcomers. They have built an extremely strong intuition of game design knowledge that I don't think they will be affected by brain drain. Games like Mario wonder and Odyssey, Zelda BOTW/TOTK , Splatoon show what the new generation of developers are capable of so I think the games are in good hands. It will be a sad day when Miyamoto retires though :(

She was going around talking to the villagers and lasted about 20 minutes before giving it back saying "this is silly", but I know she had fun and I was amazed at how quickly she understood how to move around and talk to villagers. As a fan of long RPGs, before I start a game I know is long (Xenoblade, Persona, Metaphor, etc.) I make sure I know it's going to be that long, there aren't any new releases I care about releasing close by, and I have some quick backlog games out of the way. Most of the games I play nowadays are 50+ hours and if I just don't play anything else I always get through with them without any struggle.

I agree with Krysta. The story in Horizon Zero Dawn, and I would add Horizon Forbidden West, is one of the best stories in a game ever. For me, the Horizon series is my favorite among open-world games. I like the side quests and the deep interaction you get with the characters in the story. I'm definitely buying Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and comparing it to the original Horizon Zero Dawn. I'm looking forward to playing LEGO Horizon Adventures next month.

Metaphor is going to be as long as you want to engage with it. If you want to make the most of the calendar system and try and do every possible side activity in the allotted time then it'll take you 100 hours to finish the game. If you just want to get to the end in about 40 hours you can crank down the difficulty and skip all optional content. I think most people end up doing something in between those two extremes. The appeal of these games is how beautifully they integrate the social system into the battle system. It's so long because it's weaving personal narratives into an overarching narrative and it's up to you what parts of that experience you engage with. If you've only scratched the surface of persona 5 then you didn't play long enough to see the real appeal of these games, so I really hope you give metaphor a chance to hook you in!

I agree about the Persona games being too long. At hour 60 of Personal 5 I was riding the high and would give it a 9/10 but then found out I'm not even halfway and by the time I beat it I got tired of the whole thing and had a guide next to me just to speed through dungeons faster. Id give it a 7/10 by the end. It's just too bloated. Metaphor being an 80 hour experience is much more consumable thankfully, the setting helps too

1:02:33 The word of the day is CRUNCHY, lol. Nowadays everybody wants the most bang for their buck, in regards to replay value. Additional complicated mechanics is the most recent way to add value to a game, look how the rules in Yu-Gi-Oh have progressed (I have no idea, lol). The only reason I can think of why a gamer would put themselves through that would be to support a new/old series they started watching (and they choose not to play the earlier games to learn the battle systems, cough-rista)... and that's 'Sir Crunchy' to all you non-otaku's, muha haha hah, *fixes glasses*, lol.

The Halo news made me feel upset the first time I heard it a couple of days ago. I remember reading something being reported months ago like 343 Industries will no longer develop Halo games or loss the license by Microsoft so they could give it to another studio instead. Halo 4 and 5 weren't that good and Halo Infinite was considered a big failure. Months later, I feel like I was lied to after learning 343 Industries changed its name to Halo Studios. We all know the only good Halo games were 1,2,3, and Reach which was made by Bungie anyway. The 343 Industries era of Halo was bad. Halo Studios is just the same company. A new different studio should have given the Halo license.
