Supermarkets and restaurants are in business to make a profit. They cannot make a profit if they sell foods that are not popular. Chicken livers are not as popular as beer and potato chips. Canned sardines and refrigerated sauerkraut are not as popular as Oreo cookies, sweetened breakfast cereals and chocolate bars. When a food becomes unpopular it is no longer profitable and not worth taking up valuable shelf space to stock it. Some other nutritious foods might be popular but are perceived as too expensive. Organic butter from grassfed milk cows might be popular if it were not so much more expensive than fake butter margarine.

Ground up can sardines (no onions or extra spices) are a great source of protein for dogs and cats, very healthy! Organ meats are also excellent for dogs and should be a part of their dinners at least 4 times a week (if not more). Organ meats do not need to be cooked for dogs. Dogs also like inexpensive tuna and other canned fish WITHOUT BONES ONLY. Just remember to not feed your dog anything that contains onion or onion power as it can make dogs very sick.

Other than that, I really couldn't tell you which one was which if you performed a blind taste test. The flavor, and consistency are pretty much identical, at least they are to my pallette. There is, however, a noticeable difference in color. Liverwurst, has a pale shade, similar to human skin. Sardines and kippered herrings are excellent choices for a healthy diet. It's unfortunate that smelts have become harder to find, as they are also nutritious. The strong flavor and smell of canned fish can be off-putting for some, but for those who enjoy it, it's a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. It's always important to check the quality of the cans, as a "fishy" taste might indicate a compromised product. Enjoy your sardines on toast!
