Why the Sony FX6 is Replacing my Canon C200

After much debate, I've gone ahead and ordered not one but two Sony cameras - the FX6 and a7s III. The only question left is am I making a big mistake? (*Yells* "Come Back Canon!")

Once I receive the Sony FX6, I'll be doing some side by side comparisons with the Canon C200 to see how the out of camera colours stacks up with one another. I'm very keen to find out everyone's preference!

Yes I thought the same ....but I would love to have a little more megapixels(24-30) for prints....lot of my income is from prints and I am afraid of 12mpx. But a7iii does not give a 10bit which is limiting too. So I will probably keep my Panasonic s1 as B cam for video and obviously for pictures. Would be interesting to know how the af works with sigma mc 11 and canon ef lenses from which I have few.

I did the EXACT same thing. I had three different cameras from 3 different manufacturers using 3 different lenses, codecs, cards, etc, and I am selling them all for a FX6/A7S3 combo. I think that is the best spend for $10K (yes, plus accessories) in the owner/operator corporate field today.

Record limits, log 2-3, overheating are what give me reservations about the R5 too. It should be the B can we are looking for. No idea why we couldn’t get an update to c200 for 10 bit. That darn cripple hammer

You nailed it man! Well said! I have been having a very similar stream of strategic thoughts. And yeah, it is emotionally hard, lol. I have some cannon glass that I'm sad to let go of. I was all on board to get the c70 but just cancelled my preorder a few days ago. For a two camera shoot, I really like the idea of an a7s iii with the fx6 and possibly using the new rumored a7 iv that might be an over sampled 4k image (fingers crossed). I would use the a7 iv as a more compact "A" camera if it's of the same picture quality of the a7s iii, just with more detail. I really like punching in on 4k image in post so if I can only use one camera for an interview, I can just use that one and make cuts between wide and punched in.

I’m a c200 owner as well and bought the a7siii a couple months ago. I like the a7siii image more than my c200 haha. Having two camera systems is a lot to manage and now that the fx6 is coming out I’m going to ditch the c200 and go all sony. I will be rocking the fx6, a7siii, and a7iii for stills. All full frame which will allow me to swap lenses and streamline my day to day corporate shooting.

You get the Sony 24-105 for run-and-gun, and get the Tamron Trio (17-28/28-70/70-180). Four lenses for two cameras for around $4k, and you have EVERY situation covered.

I’m grabbing the Sigma 24-70 ART for my doc style work then grabbing some vintage glass fire narrative/personal projects. The Tamrons are focus by wire so that’s not great for manual focusing.

It’s an excellent camera for my workflow (corporate video/interviews). I just got mine about a month ago. Great image quality, excellent form factor. My FX-6 paired with my FX-3 (my new B-Cam). Lastly, my A7IV is my photography camera and my C-Cam if needed. Having the same 10 bit color science is critical.

I actually made the jump from sony a7sii to canon C70. Main reason was the user experience of Canon vs Sony. For now I really like the colors that come out of the camera. Whitebalancing the a7sii was a pain in the butt in my experience, but this has been improved big time for the a7siii I believe. Next to that the small formfactor while having all the tools I need is sick, enables me to go out with a very small backpack. I always adapted Canon EF glass to my sony because I liked the manual focus better, now I have the C70 there are many more lenses available while still supporting AF. Though, the FX6 still gives me doubtful feelings haha the more modular design seems to be a big plus and its low light capabilities give peace of mind.

The C200 Mark II is coming within a few months, it will be a cheaper alternative to the C300 Mark III with the same sensor and matched perfectly to the C70 with 10-bit codecs. With Sony the cost of brand new lenses to have full AF support need to be factored in.

i had the a7s a7r combo since the first one came out and now the fx6 will join the collection. all lenses will look the same because they are all fullframe, i love this combo and i love sony. honestly if you want a fullframe video camera that does not overheat you can either spend 16k on a c500 and a r5 only for stills or you get simply more cheaper set with also a very good image and absolutely reliable with sony

Just got my fx6 today. Jumped on it as soon as it was announced and intend to pair it with my a7siii as an AB combo. Also shoot stills on my a7r4 do I am officially a Sony fanboy now 😂

I’ve always liked Canon colors. Although Sony’s color science has vastly improved, I could fully understand why someone would choose Canon as they have always been known for great skin tones. I shoot Sony and beginning with the A7SIII the colors stopped being so green and are much more balanced.

My thoughts exactly. I came very close to getting the C70, but one big reason I went with the FX6 is because the a7S iii pairs perfectly with it - if I were to get the C70 I would have to get another C70 as the b cam, because the R5’s dynamic range isn’t there / the overheating. Also the RF lens equivalents I would get are either double the price of E mount lenses or don’t exist currently.

Im looking at the fx6 as well. Canon RF lenses are just crazy priced. You can go the booster route but you only have 60% of the sensor for autofocus. I like both but Im strongly leaning to Sony now.

@@d.edwardsfreelanceeditorvi4212 The only saving grace of the C70 and lens selection is the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. If it wasn’t for that lens there would be no fast wide lenses on a super 35 sensor.

Theres a Super 35 on both the FX6 and A7s3 but only in HD. The only other option is Clear Image zoom in 4k to achieve a super 35 cheat in 4K. nice video and I to picked up the A7S3 and pre Ordered the FX6 :) nice thinking Matt.

Yes thank you for adding this Michael! Clear Image Zoom in 4K sounds like a great feature in a pinch but the quality sounds questionable, I’m keen to test it myself.

@@MattQuattro I own a few of the latest Alpha cameras the latest being the A7S3 i have 2 of them. Also a7r4,a73 and so on so Ive worked with the Clear Image zoom lots of times you need to use this for yourself it's truly good, like really good. My main camera is a FX72 so i kinda understand what you're looking for as far as IQ. I would just say Rent an Alpha camera clear image zoom is on them and it works the same. Great idea but cost wise it made more sense with the Sony's, for me anyway. I picked up some good pricing on both whereas the Canon's would've been thousands more.

5 xt4 and 2 xh1 for live events 2 a7siii and 1 fx 6 for high end

i hope i never have to use apsc again xD not because i think the image is bad but my old setup was fs7 and a7sii and when one camera is apsc and one fullframe getting lenses that make sense for both cameras is pure horror ... i ordered both the a7siii and fx6 now and i can not wait to have that combo, the a7siii is already here and i love it. i think the combination of fx6 and a7siii is soooo much better than getting a 10k camera and having always the trouble with b-cams that do not fit well

Good video and I like your personal lighting setup. The obvious answer here since you own a C200 already is simply just to buy another C200. Then you already have glass, the cameras are perfectly matched, and you only have to invest in one new rig (and you don't have to sell either of your old ones). I do think the two Sonys will produce better results in some cases, and if it fits your budget I think it's a great choice. But keeping things fair, there's no reason you'd have to go out and buy two brand new cameras just to get a "B" cam to your C200.

You raise a very good point Dalton and I was wondering if anyone was going to bring it up. The problem with a second C200 is I needed something smaller and lighter to comfortably mount on gimbals. I’ve got the C200 balanced on a Ronin-S but it’s far from comfortable. Otherwise I totally agree with you.

You’re not wrong but I wanted a smaller camera to use more easily on a gimbal, and the fact the a7S is also a stills camera is extremely flexible!

Sony have won another generational format battle. Canon playing catch-up with overpriced and under-spec offerings. I’ve moved, sold all glass and bodies. Gone FX6 and A7Siii - couldn’t be happier

Get the C70 and buy a used EOS R as a B camera. I'm waiting on my C70 and selling my R6. My EOSR I'm keeping as my B. I just love the look of Canon footage with very little massaging.

As terrible as the c70 is in form it’s picture is almost identical to c200 raw. Sony?? Lenses??? Rf is the future for canon. Sony picture is so underwhelming compared to canon. Audio on the handle?? None on the body. On that alone I wouldn’t trust it. What lenses do you have? Canon af so much better than Sony and works across makes. Sony fx6 stuck with full frame or electronic zoom??? Lens choice for Sony just not there. At needs Sony lenses. Do you have them?! Good luck.

The picture might be identical or actually better on the c70 but it will lack the flexibility. it's dumb they didnt allow external raw.

C70 form is actually the best thing about it, along with the sensor. That kind of ergonomics and ease of use doesn't exist anywhere, that's why that is the best sub $10k cinema camera as Gerald Undone said it. I have C200 and C70 and there is no comparison in favor of C70, either in image or ergonomics. No Sony could touch that.
