The thing that makes the conflict between Usopp and Luffy well written and executed is that nothing about the situation feels manufactured for the sake of drama. Unlike Luffy and Zoro’s small fight at Whiskey Peak or the Straw Hats’ bickering in movie 6, everything about how the characters are expressing their feelings is completely in-character and makes sense given the circumstances in the scene. We’ve seen the seeds of this confrontation sprinkled throughout the earlier sagas up to the beginning of Water 7: the amount of damage Merry is taking, Usopp’s lack of respect towards Luffy as an authority figure and his feelings of inadequacy as a member of the crew, and Luffy’s inadequacies as a leader. This confrontation is the culmination of all those elements that had been bubbling underneath the surface finally erupting in the heat of a conflict that was inevitable if they are to continue moving forward on their adventure.

That's a fantastic way to put it 👍
@diamonddoctrine3983Ай бұрын
Also, to give credit to movie 6, it's heavily implied throughout the experience that it's outside influence/miasma/magic/pollen or whatever that's bringing the strawhats apart. Significant moments that show the point of difference and no return for their relationships thats insincere for all of them. As it is designed like a horror movie, you know deep down that it isn't just out of character, but it's fundamentally wrong. They don't fight without care, so cruely. Usopp would never mock Nami's betrayal, Sanji would never let someone (even Zoro) go hungry, and as Chopper/Robin were too curious (and likely would've figured out what was happening) and too soft or separate to get involved in such conflicts so they were removed early. We see that by the end when no one even remembers what happens.
@theassortedhobbyistАй бұрын
@@diamonddoctrine3983 While it is implied through various close-ups on the Baron’s flower, never is it explicit in the text or in other visual cues that the flower is responsible for the heightened hostility amongst the crew. Just a small indication to that being the case would be enough for me to accept that, but it’s ultimately just a head-cannon theory that allows these out of character moments to feel acceptable for a One Piece narrative.

Usopp works on the Going Merry but he's not really the shipwright. He wasn't recruited to fill that role, he just fills it because they don't have anyone else. Usopp is the marksman, so he has a combat role.
@FrameOfMindBrosАй бұрын
It's a great analogy of how hard it is to fulfill a role that isn't in your "scope" of strengths 😉
@purple_rose_ismeАй бұрын
One thing I want to add about Usopp's dream is to highlight the importance of the word "brave" in "brave warror of the sea". The times he has shined most in the show so far are less about displays of power and more about displays of bravery in moments like these when he stands up for what he believes in. You really hit the nail on the head when you said that it takes a real warrior to fight when the odds are against you. The moments when Usopp stands up when he's needed but at the same time afraid prove that he's already got the brave quality. I'm really looking forward to the rest of his journey because the next step is him realizing his strengths and building even further upon it.

One of my favorite quotes that I have attributed to Usopp (and I believe foreshadow his role in the final saga of OP) is by the British author David Gemmell, "By definition, only the coward is capable of the highest heroism." That has always been the defining character of Usopp, he actually IS brave. In Neil Gaiman's novel Coraline her father explains to her, that doing something without being scared isn't bravery. It's still doing the thing EVEN THOUGH you're scared. That's bravery.

I want to actually thank the live-action One Piece because until then it never clicked with me that Usopp was supposed to be us. He was supposed to be the everyman, normal human, audience surrogate among a group of monsters because we the audience, like Usopp, would be crapping our pants every time we arrived at a new island. Usopp is the most unusual-looking of the human Straw Hats and I never got that he was the audience until the live-action finally made him look human. I love the detail in Water 7 that as the crew dynamic gets worse, the weather gets worse and it isn't until Enies Lobby, the place with eternal sunshine, that the crew starts jelling together again and we don't see any clouds or rain at all for the rest of the saga. But something else that is interesting about the Luffy/Usopp fight is that Luffy has never actually seen Usopp fight. He wasn't there for Usopp's fight vs Chew or Mr. 4. So Luffy has no idea what to expect. I want to commend Oda for giving us 400 episodes of Luffy struggling but succeeding, and then, in episode 405, he pulled the rug out from his main characters and the audience and put the main character through the wringer for 100-ish episodes.

Loved hearing you guys break all these scenes down, couldn't agree more with your analysis. I will mention, Usopp wants to be a "Brave" warrior of the sea. It's the only dream that doesn't have an external measurement to it like becoming the pirate king or finding the All Blue. It runs directly counter to his dominant character trait of being a liar, its the core conflict of his character development. Also fun fact, his name Usopp is a portmanteau of Aesop, from Aesop's fables (this is where his tendency to tell tall tales about himself comes from) and from the Japanese word Uso, which means to lie or liar. Additional note, if you two haven't you absolutely need to watch Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. It is a story absolutely riddled with meaning and deep, heartfelt, compelling moments and I know you two crybabies will love it.

I literally found myself tearing up at the most recent one piece episode… (SPOILERS for current one piece anime) …at Garp’s sacrifice for Koby, feeling exactly like Garp finally being able to save “his son” as if he could’ve saved Ace. The parallel to marineford through Garp/ Whitebeard storming an island just to get one man back and leaving the leader there feels kinda uncanny. Although, Usopp was acting on insecurities and fears.

Lost count on how many one liners i've stolen from u guys lol. "its not ab becoming a good person, its more ab staying a good person" is 10/10 some bucket list topics: - scenes that made us cry that werent sad (aka happy tears) - characters that lose themselves (opposite to ur tanjiro discussion) - what makes a great side character the first one in particular is the one im more interested in listening to ur thoughts. drawing tears with a sad scene is already an extremely hard task for a story but doing so out of happy scene is in my opinion hardest task in all of media. the list of prerequisites necessary to draw happy tears is so extensive, the ground work is so difficult i dont know many writers that can pull it off and if i may recommend one show that has one of the craziest themes and one of the most nonsensical but deepest lines i've ever heard in a show that you might like: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (from the creators of Cyberpunk and Kill La Kill but this time with mountain/planetary/galactic size mechs). its a 2006 anime with god tier animation, better looking than most series today. The whole theme is about "kicking logic out and doing the impossible" (direct quote), like a shounen anime but on steroids. after they do the impossible against impossible odds the show shifts gears, the characters "mature" and become more logic focused, the problems are dealt with a "grown up" mindset only to then be faced against even more impossible odds than before. they realize the only way to defeat the impossible is doing the impossible again, kicking logic out the window and just believe the protagonists are two brothers, the older (Kamina) is full of self confidence and the little brother (Simon) is the opposite, he's very shy and doesnt believe in himself but he does believe in his big brother. In a moment where Simon is needed but he's just too insecure to step up, his big bro Kamina says this crazy line: "Don't believe in yourself! Believe in me! Believe in the Kamina who believes in you!" At first glance it doesnt make sense, even one of the characters asks "what does that mean?" as a joke the but whoever has dealt with deep insecurity will understand that having encouraging words from a mentor figure is enough to keep going even though the self doubt is still there. i tutor highschoolers for math competitions. they're really hard working, study everyday for months before a competition and are really smart but extremely insecure in their ability, to the point many dont want to even attend. when no kind of words work to build their confidence i bring up the Kamina line: "dont believe in yourself but believe in me. i've graded ur prep tests, i've checked ur work, I know ur level and i know the difficulty of the test. if u feel unprepared thats fine, but i know u're not so believe in me" and most of the time that flips a switch. As time goes and they get experience they build confidence by themselves and i no longer have to use the Kamina line similarly Kamina eventually stops using that line, in a climax of the show he says to his lil bro: "Just believe in yourself. Not in the Simon that I believe in. Not in the Kamina that you believe in. Have faith in the Simon who believes in you"

I hope in the One Piece remake, they make it very ambiguous what Kuma is doing when he pops each Straw Hat. New watchers should have a moment of complete despair, not knowing what is happening to their favourite characters, cursing Kuma's name and be left devastated all the way up through Summit War. So many people watch this sequence in the anime and immediately know that Kuma is saving them. I think that robs the scene of its impact, especially when Luffy breaks down and thinks he's failed his nakama. This makes it all the more hopeful when its revealed what their fates are and later we reflect on the hate we feel for Kuma and realise just what he did and who he is after all he's gone through.

I feel like Kuma is my father who slapped me as a child and now I understand he did that to teach me a lesson as a favour and out of the good of his soul. hahahahah that's how old this show is now. 🤣😂

It makes such a difference to the viewing experience when you can watch all 1100+ episodes within the span of a few months instead of 20 years 😂

I'd be really interested to see your thoughts on the fights in Wind Breaker. The first season of the anime released this year, and the second season is coming out April 2025. All of the fights in it are masterfully animated, with amazing choreography and the stories told during the fights are so impactful, with amazing character moments

Agreed, I don't know if Jordan has seen it yet but I (Curtis) am having a lot of fun watching it 😁

I know I asked for a One Piece video and thank you from doing that, but seriously, I wanna see both Deamon Slayer and the new Deadpool without any spoilers, but I still haven't, so I can't enjoy properly. Would you mind telling me which parts to skip?

Stoked we could get you another One Piece video! We want to slip in OP whenever we can 😁 For the spoilers we actually don’t talk about Deadpool 2 or 3 at all, it’s just spoilers for the concept of Deadpool character in general. So if you’ve seen Deadpool 1 already you don’t have to worry about spoilers For Demon Slayer we use a lot of example footage scattered throughout including from the latest arc which might unintentionally spoil things just with the b roll. And the conversation is general enough that we talk about concepts that might spoil how things progress in the story based on where you are so may be best to just avoid the whole Demon slayer section unfortunately until you’ve caught up with the latest anime arc. We have the timestamps in the description and they should also be on the timeline when you hover over it 😁 Thanks for being an OG! 🙏🏻

I would love to see you guys talk about (Rooster-Teeth’s) Red Vs Blue, the psychological angle of the series is often over looked. The deconstruction of the Metas psyche and the destructive competitiveness of Carolina are amazing to watch. If you haven’t watched the show yet it shouldn’t take you to long each season is around the length of a movie. I also have to warn you the first four seasons are mostly a couple of guys playing halo, making jokes and having fun, and the mic quality is pretty bad in the first season. but season 5 and beyond feel like a real show and the pay off in season 10 and 13 aren’t the same if you don’t watch 1 -4. Also don’t watch past season 13, season 15 and on ward are really bad. And season 14 is just a bunch of unrelated bonus episodes.

2 minutes in, understood the topic, I fully get why One Piece was in the thumbnail. EDIT: And I can confirm, I REALLY don't like the dub... I found it so devoid of real emotion compared to the OG...

If you gonna talk about more anime, i wonder if you brave enough to talk about mushoku tensei or goblin slayer? Especially mushoku tensei of it about ' Terapy and philosopy' in anime

The duel between Luffy and Usopp is one of/if not my favorite fight in One Piece, but I can't take it seriously with Luffy's english VA. I will most likely have a VERY hard time when One Piece is remade.

The debate between sub and dub rages on 💁 I completely understand what you mean. We realize there's pros and cons to each and everyone has their own opinion which is why we chose to do both for different examples in this episode 😉 But personally I (Jordan) actually feel similarly that I can resonate more emotionally with the Japanese VA's performance in most cases. I can't speak to Curtis' experience but hey, the debate rages on

I only saw 10 seconds of the video and I stopped because one piece was dubbed, and I hate dub anime, as for people who watch dub anime, and they are over 10 years old, then I think they are stupid, so why do I have to watch a video from idiots.

41:36 spoiler This act is more complex then just saying that this is him doing this as a “good guy”. This is Kuma’s last conscious act of life before experiencing brain death for someone who he has only met once who knows nothing about him.
