I go to bed at 21 (almost religiously, I have teen kids, so sometimes life gets in the way), But usually I fall asleep around 21:15, but I don't wake up until 6... I just need that much sleep, and it's been like that since I was a teenager. I am diagnosed with both Asperger and ADD. A psychiatrist once told me I need this much sleep because I get exhausted using my cognitive ability for social interactions and that I spend way more energy on trying to focus than others (I got a very cognitively challenging job in IT). But, before I "discovered" Impact Theory I used to go to bed att 22:30 and sleep until 8:00 being thrown into the day like a sacrificial lamb. So getting up at 6 is a great improvement for my life. I now have time to do my daily planning, go through emails, do a 40 minute morning walk listening to educational pods, do journaling, and I do 15-30 minutes of mediation. I do all this before the work day attacks, so I am prepared for my work day like an olympics finalist, every single day. So I can't thank you enough Tom, even though getting up at 6 is all "I can manage". Going to bed at 21 has significantly improved my productivity since I am now fully prepared each morning so I am now in full command of the day. It has done wonders for my ADD focus issues and I am WAY less anxious. Somehow it has also given me more energy in the afternoon and evenings, most likely because I am in control and therefore less stressed. I am 50, and it is never too late to relearn and change your daily habits. You really do can teach an old dog tricks.

So such things can’t be adapted for many many humans. I know who wakes up at 3-4am and slaves at his job till the evening (indoors all day) and has so many health issues. How timely this post is. I've been wanting to change my work schedule to mornings. For the last year & a half, I've been doing 4 ten hour shifts from 3 pm till 1 pm, and sometimes till 2 am. The previous job I actually had to quit due to job related insomnia in elderly care giving for a dementia patient with sundowners. That job was a mental health disaster. But I've been aware for a while that this way for working has been bad for my cognition, and finally over a week ago, the opportunity for a schedule and post change came. Starting in two weeks, I'll be working 3 twelve hour shifts on weekends, from 5 am till 5:30 pm, only three days a week. This will give me a chance to change my sleep habits and to be consistent every night. I feel a big change is coming because of this! Thanks for the inspiration!

You cannot stretch the day. We all have the same 24h in the day. If you wake up at 3:30, you need to get to bed at 21:00 to get enough sleep. I am getting up at 8, and going to bed at 00:00. Same thing. BUT I get to communicate with my friends, because we share the same schedule. If I was getting to sleep at 21:00, I would not be able to get in touch with them, which would incredibly diminish my quality if life. The natural circadian rhythm depends on light as well. For me the getting up at 6:00 comes at a huge cost, of me feeling like shit 2 hours later. People need to get attuned to their own organisms. That is when you really optimise.

I have a morning stock shift where I have to be at work at 5am. Because I felt the hours were already ridiculous, I used to wake up at 4am which only gave myself just enough time to get cleaned up, get dressed and leave for work. I then realized that I was letting my job control my life and let it take away from me working more of my own personal dreams and goals. Eventually, I got to the point I was fed up with not having the time to work on my own projects and gradually started disciplining myself to wake up earlier and earlier in small increments. It started with just enough time to make a quick breakfast and watch a show that inspires me. The more I did that, I noticed it put me in a better mood when I started my work day. Over time I kept adjusting my wake up time more and more, to the point that I now wake up at 2am, which gives me time to do my morning hygiene, eat and watch my favorite show, do small chores around my apartment to eliminate distractions later in the day, and spend time learning new software towards my goals, Meditate, and THEN leave for work. I feel like crap every time my alarm goes off, but when I keep forcing myself to get up and accomplish those tasks, I feel incredibly fulfilled and hate my job a lot less! I always tell myself and other people the hardest part is just waking up. But if you can make yourself do that, the results will be incredibly rewarding!

Tom, sooo about the daytime naps - there are two kinds: a Power Nap and a Full nap. The Full nap is the one you are describing as not liking at all. I read somewhere (I forget now) that the most productive way to recharge is for the nap “not” to exceed 25-28 minutes otherwise your body slips into a deep sleep which will not recharge you but instead cause you to feel super “lost”. I have perfected my routine - I drink coffee (since the caffeine starts to kick in after 15-20 minutes), set the timer for 20 minutes and leave it 6 feet away from my couch (I know you’re against the alarm clocks for the morning time). Lie down, nap, and immediately sit up once the timer goes off and in the manner of minutes (3-5) I am able to drive my kids to some [tennis] practice. Warning: I found that for at least 15 minutes after the Power Nap I am extremely irritable and would chew out my kids for any minor misbehavior so I learned to bite my tongue until this post-Power Nap irritability dissipates. In general, I get fully productive within 10 minutes of waking up, try it :)

So, there are some great nuggets of advice here BUT, I have to draw the line at working 17-18 hours a day as he says he does. What’s the point of life if all you do is work your ass off and sleep? I was interested in the concept of the title, so I started to watch it. I already do some of it, and for years. Up at 4 naturally, bed around 7:30 pm, cardio or weights in my upstairs gym first thing. I intermittent fast; last meal by 6 pm, first meal at 10 am, so a 16/8 cycle. I’m 59 and an empty nester cybersecurity engineer working from home, and my wife has to get up at 3:30 to go to work, so this schedule works for me and her. Where it goes off the rails for me, and why I was interested in this topic is, I let too many things distract me during the day and I know I’m not being nearly as productive every day as I could be. That said, Tom, dude, really? You’ve got so much structure, so many rules, you’ve totally over-engineered the simple task of living and good and happy life, and you work like a fiend, and for what? Yes, you’ve started multi-million dollar companies, you’re an insanely successfully entrepreneur, but you said something very interesting to me. I’m paraphrasing, but you said something about how most people do ok in life, and they’re muddling through, and that’s ok, but then eventually someone like yourself will come along and basically eat their lunch. Go for it man, but I don’t think it’s healthy for me to be looking over my shoulder for the next Tom Bilyeu of my profession to make me look bad. That’s no way to work or live. So yes, I do need to figure out how to be more productive at work, but not at the cost working 17 to 18 hours a day for heaven’s sake. You do you man, and you gave me a couple of good ideas, but good Lord, take it down a notch!

Wake up at 3:30am. Great advice for entrepreneurs and people who are working on an actual business. Not as practical for someone who works a regular 8-5 day job or someone who has a family. I could get up at 3:30am every morning, but I don't know what I'd do with myself. Well, it's not for everyone, even 6 am is too early for me. Besides, I am not really sure that 3.30 am is a healthy wake up time for everyone. I feel way more energetic after 3 pm. And through trial and error I have found out that 5 pm is a perfect time for my running sessions. Also my brain works exceptionally well in the evening. So I am definitely not a morning person and will never be. When I try to go against my body and go to bed early I always end up feeling sluggish and tired in the morning. Some people feel great waking up at 3 am but I know from my personal experience I will be gradually destroyed by this kind of inhumane daily regimen. So, Tom, please, stop spreading this cliched nonsense. No, you don't have to outwork anyone, wake up at 3 am or... to be happy and have a fulfilling life. After getting sick of listening to podcasts and never taking action, I took up a wake up time challenge that looking back now, totally changed my life in just 2 years. I knew I had to be serious if I was gonna do it so I announced it to my friends and family that if I am late by even a second from 5:30 am, I'd send them 300 bucks each. No excuses. The only exception was some emergency incident or urgent travel. And this was a lifetime contract, because from all the amazing interviews I've heard, a strict bedtime schedule was the single most important habit for progress in life. And well, everyone I approached and continue to approach now, to help with the accountability are beyond glad to be of "service" 😅 And so far, I have missed just once around the first month. And that hurt enough both my finances and egp, to get me to never miss again lol. Yeah this method is brutal but if you care enough to want to change your life, it obviously is worth betting your pride and a few thousand bucks on it. My bet definitely paid off and I'm sure the compounding benefits of this one cornerstone of a habit will be many times more over my lifetime.

I think one thing I would like to see Tom encourage people to do more is to reduce their trauma load. No amount of optimized routine is going to erase the burden people carry around from bad childhood or adulthood experiences. Do EMDR, cognitive behavioral and somatic therapy, consider psychedelic medicines on top of those therapies, and drop the trauma burden. Even if these are hard to access for a lot of people, I consider these things to be the number one most important thing a lot of people can do to improve their lives, assuming they have been hurt. Of course having good food, exercise and work habits will help mental health (within reason) as well but we shouldn't expect them to be the cure for trauma.

To anyone living a normal life or even a mediocre life. You are doing it right. Your life doesn't have to be full of high octane moments. You don't have to be saving the world. All you have to do is be as healthy as you can and enjoy your family and friends. Get a hobby or two. If that is enough for you than you need to do nothing more. This is a ton of bullshit and its not a healthy way to live.

1:25:22 for me, the way to get out of wanting to stay in the "comfortable" phase was building love for myself, because I didn't care how I was treating myself to feel comfortable. Now for example, if I think of fast food I think of how my body will feel after I eat it. I started to enjoy eating whole food and fasting because I am excited to "spoil myself" with great feeling/energy. 1st step spiritual growth 2nd step loving myself how God&family loves 3rd step 3 day water fast 4th step whole food & intermittent fasting

here's a tip for better sleep: do cardio at the end of your day! You said you don't do cardio but it's important for heart health. It could be as easy as walking on a treadmill for 30 mins on an incline at a slow pace. It will still increase your heart rate and tire you out so you will have no choice BUT to rest

Hi Tom, would it be possible to invite someone to discuss how to implement routines in a family setting and how one can follow these routines when for instance its partner does not have the same knowledge or doesn't want to follow the same routines. For instance a partner that want to watch late night movies with you, or considers extremely important for the couple's harmony to go to bed together, or for instance is from a culture setting from late night dinners with friends and family. Also how to deal with the sleep interruptions by young children. Many thanks

In my opinion this obsession with getting the most out of ones life is fueled by deep insecurity and fear. The fear that actually you’re insignificant no matter what you do. Which in the context of eternity is true. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Great video ! I have also been waking up without alarm clock between 2 am and 6 am every day (4:30 though is my prefered time) and I go to bed around 22:00-22:30. I have stopped intermittent fasting as i feel as a 52 years old woman, I eat keto and try to have my last meal before 6pm but I should listen to my body when screaming for food. I am not sure keto and intermittent fasting is good for women at any age, yet right now keto and AIP diet mixed together is what I want to do for improving my health/ autoimmune disease but again, one should listen to hunger alarm to not go on deprivation mode (my theory now). I have read "Miracle Morning" book but I was already getting up very early because of fibromalgia (after long Covid) and realized I was not the only one to really enjoy the silence and the extra time to read, write, think in a quiet and peaceful time of the day (so empowering). I can only exercice after a few hours when my body has warmed up as earlier straight from bed I am very stiff but if I have a 7 o'clock breakfast then I won't exercice before 11 or 12 am so my stomach is rather empty. I also do the cold shower after my work out but as a finishing after a warm one (to relax the muscle). It is tough enough for me this way, I don't feel I should beat me up every day with a straight cold shower (you need pleasure in life and a warm shower to relax your muscles and mind is a good one). I also do warm bath (followed by a cold shower) with sea salt, sodium bicarbonate and magnesium oil to wash out stress and ache. It is not very eco friendly but a pure luxury to wash out from stress, get mineral, and apparently sea salt will clean and purify your aura. It is so rejuvanating, give it a try with a good book or relaxing music. I rather do Ashtanga yoga mixed with pilates than stressing my adrenals with too high intensity work out (again I am 52). I think women need to be more gentle on themselves than men as a lot of us are already drained from too much stress. Premenopause and menopause create a lot of various symptoms that you can research on google and KZbin. A women going through hormones imbalances whatever her age can have an extreme horrible time (from rage episodes, insomnia, depression, weight gain, acne, breast tenderness, hot flashes with anxiety attacks, arthritis...etc....yep when I say horrible I mean it. You need to evaluate your symptoms and treat them before exercising madly as you may get discouraged seeing no to little results. Watch your thyroid, watch your progesterone level (you can go by the symptoms, please read "Dr Lee" book on "bio-identical hormones" therapy), watch your œstrogène levels, your fatigue and inflammations. A 40 something man advice is good but you need to adapt it to your age and gender. More important find a diet you like as a long term life style and not a short time diet, evaluate your symptoms (thyroid, hormones, bad habits...) that slow your progress down, an exercice that you enjoy and don't drain your energy out of yourself and an eating window that fits you without feeling too hungry. Again I don't think you should follow someone experience as he/ she is not YOU. Discipline is good up to a certain point. Listen to your body !! Meditation is great but you can also buy some audio hypnosis download that you can listen after exercising or at nap time. Swimming, yoga and Pilates need to pair breathing with movement, it is a great to work both together and get into a meditative state. Like Tom my body disagree with napping as I got sluggish, headaches and get into a real bad mood. As a matter of fact, like in yoga, don't compare yourself to other, just do the best up to your limit for today and try a little harder tomorrow. This is you not someone else, go to your own pace and add lots of pleasure in whatever you do so you keep on going. Too many obligations weight on women shoulders (job, kids, house, beauty, sex appeal, kindness as a woman asset is kind of an obligation). Enjoy the trip to good health, good vibrations, happiness, success and don't forget life without pleasure is not so enjoyable, so pick your fights and match them with your taste and abilities. Cheers to everyone !

nailed it! And so on point or spot on about pairing swimming/yoga/pilates with breathing. The nuances of that are a very very big deal in both neurosci and physio-whatnot sci's. Possibly Huberman gets into that in his vid's which are excellent. I'm a man over 50 and u r spot on about women having a preposterously massive number and magnitude of obligations. Totally out of sync with what is balanced. That must be countered at every stage of life, from younger years on. Also, Dr. Gilett mentioned that most ppl do not react well at all to intense exercise very early in day....something very specificaly bad for most ppl re that.

3:30 am might work for some people, but it won’t if you have kids. I’d be wiped out by 5:00pm and never see my kids.

Great advice on going to bed at the same time every night; that is paramount! Getting up and getting going makes the world go round; according to Dr Matthew Walkers research; you are addressing those with an early chronotype when it comes to rising early. Many have a late chronotype though where they don’t fall asleep early to wake up early and this is written into their dna. There are short sleepers, average sleepers and even long sleepers (like Einstein for example). I think it really comes down to the part where you mention managing time and rest and work to live and be our best life and succeed. I’m just bringing this up because society has been hard on the health of those with late chronotypes and those that literally need more sleep (long sleepers); it’s even more difficult as they have to manage their time and social obligations even more than the average sleeper. Short sleepers are in a minority, but they fit in quite easily. I love all of your advice around managing time and productivity. I know that ‘wake up earlier’ is music to the ears of those that have no problem doing this, however; those with a late chronotype should not go against the grain of their dna as this will always leave them feeling terrible and harm their health more than doing them any good. You nailed it though on going to bed at the same time every night; I’m just saying that time and duration is different for everyone. Also, if anyone reading this has any type of sleep trouble; request a ‘Sleep study’ from your Dr to see if you have sleep apnea. A sleep study is done in one night, sometimes you can do it at home; the results can change your life for the better forever💚. Not kidding at all; treating my sleep apnea with Cpap therapy has changed my life for the good in ways that nothing else has. I’d echo this video too though, try going to bed at the same time every night; do it when it feels right, whether your’re an early riser or a late riser. And know that if you are a late riser, you need to be even more diligent about your time management and career choices in life. Peace🌿💚.

I'm annoyed I had to scroll this far for someone to discuss Chronotypes. I've put this on my list to 'listen' at some point, but was hoping for a TLDR on whether he discussed any science around Chronotypes. Especially from a guy constantly talking about our 'Biological Experience' on this earth.
