We’re so frustrated with reels because a reel that isn’t that good can suddenly get a good reach (with the same hashtags as our other reels) and better videos that we’ve put more work into don’t get a good reach. It often seem more like a coincidence which ones take off.

Hi Shannon! Agreed, IG seemed to have formatted the algorithm to bless everyone with a ton of reach on their first Reel, and then it starts to dwindle after that. One thing that worked for us was to take a TikTok-style approach to Reels, and it changed the game for us for multiple accounts. So on my personal brand account I’ve managed to do very well with reel engagement and careful editing seems to be the key with the sound just like tiktok. But captions that are relatable and intentional with your hashtags that help tell the story of the video. I do have an issue with another account I manage where our reels do not reach audience outside current followers.

So welcome! I genuinely get it, it can be a bit of a lottery, even with all the best practices. It reminds us of KZbin - it took us a solid 18 months of posting weekly to get traction. We just kept at it, studied the industry/topics/keywords, kept testing constantly. And once you get in the algorithm, you're mostly good. IG is similar in that way - once you've had a few successful Reels, it tends to favour you and these best practices typically can help you get in there, along with constant testing. Just keep going would be my best suggestion :) - C

I have had such a frustrating drop in my reels performance and I can’t figure out why. The first several reels I posted got 3-4k views, hundreds of likes, all was well. Then the last several that I’ve made have barely gotten any views. It was just a matter of a few days between reels, they’re on the same topics, mostly the same hashtags, same day and time of posting. I’ve also tried different day/time, shorter format, different topics and tags, nothing. I’m so disappointed and don’t understand what happened.

It's tough to diagnose, the only way is to keep testing. There must be some other elements you can change to see if something works, even the format of the Reels. Across the board, we're all experiencing a drop in reach/views/engagement, it's happening to us and all of our clients so it's not just you. All we can do is keep testing! - C

This is a great video! Do you have thoughts about music for a business account? If you add music outside of the platform (music that otherwise would not be available to business accounts), do you get "punished" for it? Or if you grab music from another Reel and use it? For business accounts, music is limited. But I suspect you will say go for the "native" options! Love your videos, thank you!

In my previous knowledge of hashtags and Instagram, I have believed you will be punished if you use too many hashtags. Alternatively, that you at the very least need to rotate the type/categories that you use, as otherwise Instagram will consider your hashtags as spam. Do you have any information regarding this? Thank you for the kind words, glad the video was helpful! We seem to get somebody mentioning the volume of hashtags daily. There is no proof anywhere whatsoever that Instagram wants us to use less than 30 hashtags. That's is the #1 Instagram myth we see, if they wanted us to use less than 30 then they wouldn't let us use 30, it's as simple as that. Re the hashtag banks, absolutely, you need to have a separate and unique hashtag bank for each content category/type that you post, and refresh them every quarter at the most. Don't be sacred to use hashtags! - C

Reels are so iffy....I get so frustrated when I heed the advice of a small business coach and followed all the tips and tricks to boost my engagement to have myself not being seen much. Hi Andrea, getting noticed on TikTok doesn't affect Instagram aside from people on TT enjoying your content so much that they find you on IG and follow you there. You could try using ads on IG for your Reels content, or just keep testing different approaches to your IG content and lean into what sticks. Thanks for watching - C

So it seems like the only thing I did wrong with my reel today was not use their tools because I took pride in the fact that the photos didn't need a filter and any transitions, text etc. would have just made it look cheesy. The longer I've been on Instagram the more my likes have dwindled, I've gone from averaging 60 likes per a post to barely hitting double figures. Surely my content can't be that bad.

When we say Instagram's tools, it's just the editing of the Reel in-app vs editing outside of the app, not necessarily filters. Keep going! - C

I suspect that uploading reels from your PC versus your phone makes a difference too. When I upload reels from my dinosaur of a phone, then I get views. I literally just created a real with recorded content from my canon camera and edited it with my video editing software and it bombed. Its rather discouraging considering a lot more preparation went into creating it.

It's possible for sure. They seem to really want us all to use their native tools to edit videos rather than using software on a computer. There's no direct proof that that affects the Reel's performance, but there are some correlations for sure. Maybe try to test a few that you edit natively (shot with the phone, too) against ones with your DSLR and see if there's a consistent, notable difference. - C

Hi guys! Great video. What I'm seeing is that were getting good views but were not reaching non followers. We can see when we publish posts we get a good fifty/fifty split and get followers. But with Reels we get more engagement but only 95/5 follower/non follower ratio leading to a really low follower count. Our hashtag strategy is all the same for both. Any tips?

Hi Megan! Interesting, it could be the specific hashtags you're using, but your Insights would break that down (you could compare reach from hashtags for both post types). It could also be that now Reels is more competitive, the ones that are most engaging seem to take up more space in the algorithm. You could test posting Reels to the grid or just leaving them in the Reels feed to see what that does, along with other things like sharing to Stories (do this for every post). It's a tough one to figure out as there's not enough data provided natively to make any key decisions. Keep testing different content types, times of posting, do daily engagement etc, hopefully it'll step up! - C

How would she know that? That's our point, the people saying these things have no proof nor any real indication from the app itself that Reels is "confused" by more than 5-8 hashtags. I think that's wise, if we're told otherwise by IG themselves then we'll change our strategy and our message, but until then, all you can do is test and see if there's a sweet spot for you. You can definitely use your old account, I can't think of any reason it wouldn't have Reels. Your reach on an old account will be even worse than an active account, unfortunately, but you can slowly build it back up. - C

My problem is my first two reels got many views but stopped right after that... I made better content later with good editing and all but it didn't get reach as before... I thought it would at least increase reach but I got nothing out of them... But I feel like maybe I have to post enough to get good result.I just posted 5 videos and first two just got greater engagement even my follower increased by around 30 numbers... I'm not demotivated but I just thought if only reels reach would grow with every new video... But I'll keep posting it though .Maybe at some point ,it will start growing.

Great work with the first bunch of posts, but yes you'll need to keep posting regularly and consistently to get ongoing results. Reach doesn't seem to go up with each Reel posted, it fluctuates so you always need to be testing different approaches. Keep going! - C

Wow ! This is so helpful! I'm new to instragram and I'm flooded with your info. Thank u! I'm trying to figure out how to put music to only part of my Reel. I have a video with me reel along with pictures. I want to put music to my pictures but I have a video clip at the end and I want the voice being heard. I tried lowering the volume to.the song but it lowered it throughout the whole video. I found something that might help - its a option that says "slide the bar to the part of your Reel that u want to song on." I tried it but it doesn't slide over or anything. Is there any way u could explain how to add music to only part of your Reel and add your home video clip and allow the voices to be heard? I hope this makes sense. I haven't found a tutorial to answer this

Hi, and thank you for the kind words! Instagram recently released an update that allows you to only use music on the part of the video that you want. If you're unable to do it, it likely means that it hasn't launched in your country yet, or on your specific account yet. Maybe try from another account that you have to see if it works? - C

This explains why my last reels’ reach was really bad. I use Canva’s template and there’s an empty space in the video, even though the photos are all mine. I thought it was the hashtags I add in the caption bcz in the previous reels I add the hashtags in the 1st comment. But turns out it was the design, that the video doesn’t look natural. They can definitely be that way, at least the ones that are similar to TikToks. Instagram seems to have more of a variety of aesthetic Reels, which have been super popular. It could just be what the algorithm is feeding you, too. - C

3k views is actually really solid! All you can do is to keep testing, really. Use different hashtags, try different types of Reels. The other thing you can do is use paid ads for your Reels (though the views don't count towards your Reels, they're "ghost" ads). - C

It's a strange thing, it's happening to everybody. I think that because Reels are still so new in the overrall scheme of Instagram that we're still getting used to it. They gave away reach like crazy in the beginning and we all kind of thought that would continue, but now Reels behave like any other post. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Once you get in the good graces of the algorithm, you should be fine. Keep going! - C

Hi! I'd imagine that'd be the go-to for the algorithm as they'd assume most accounts would want their content to be seen by those close by. You could try different hashtag banks to see if that helps change who sees your content, or look into paid theme accounts to give you a boost in the markets you're aiming for. - C

It would mean that the algorithm isn't feeding the Reel anymore as it tapped out in its engagement. That is based on how many people it was fed to and the engagement rate with that audience, so if people stop engaging with it, they stop serving it. Hope that helps! - C
