I studied and lived in Texas and California for 14 years. Then I left the US and has never returned. Malaysia is not perfect but at least it has less social issues (gun violence, racial discrimination, disappearing middle class, crimes, etc). The pace of living in Malaysia is also more laid back and people are more friendly, genuine and less artificial. The cost of living in Malaysia is still one of the lowest among countries with good infrastructure. It is neither backward nor advanced. It just feel right.

@@Zerpentsa6598 you don't know what you are talking about and a clueless comment. Most countries has programs to help the economically less developed groups and even the US has affirmative action. Just that in the past the bumi were poorly developed economically. Personally I think Thai has better food than Malaysia. However, the rest I feel Malaysia still has an edge. That said, if you can speak Thais then English is no longer important as a communication tool. The medical facilities in Malaysia also "better" and more affordable (at least in public hospitals). But if you are rich, anywhere in the world is just fine except Afghanistan/Lebanon?
@leopoldbourne8444

@@propertyguru22 If you can deposit 800,000 Thai baht into a bank account and leave it there (term deposit earning more interest is acceptable), you can apply for a 'non-immigrant visa'. You can do that while in the country as a tourist. Having secured that, if you are over 50 you can apply for a 'retirement extension' to your non- immigrant visa. Every 90 days you must report to Immigration to verify your address. The retirement extension is renewable annually for 1,900 baht. Paperwork formalities are strict, but once you know how it is straightforward. All these 'Golden Visa's' and the like are not worth the trouble and expense provided you are 50 or above.

Being married to a Chinese Malaysian lady for the past 41 years and living in the UK I have travelled to Malaysia to visit family at least 15 times. Lovely country, people and food to die for. My wife bought a condo in 2004 in Melaka which we have stayed 5 times since. We paid it off and thank goodness we did as we have a rent and mortgage free home in Malaysia. This October our dream of leaving the British winter months behind will become reality. In fact, I may even consider applying for a spouse visa.

You mentioned the homelessness problem in the US, but wanted to add that there are also a significant number of homeless people that work jobs too, though most of them are probably living in their vehicles. With the crazy high cost of housing in the U.S. now, low wage earners earn less than the amount apartments want for monthly rent. The numbers of people living in vehicles and RV's is exploding in the US. Property Taxes are getting insanely high too. Just because some houses in my neighborhood have been bought and sold multiple times (flipped) and beautifully remodeled too, the county appraiser has assessed my 60-year-old house to be worth just as much, even without it getting a 100K to 200K renovation. I'm going to attempt an appeal. When I retire in 9 years, it's unlikely I'd be able to stay in my house with the high property taxes. You made the best decision ever in moving to Malaysia, and I may do the same, if they return to their previous requirements.

The biggest issue with housing affordability that almost everyone overlooks is that starter homes are HUGE compared to back in the day. Most homes up to the 1980s were south of 1000 sq ft and people raised their families in those houses. Nowadays new builds average over 2000 sq ft. Young people need to dial back their expectations and learn to live with less, at least in their first home or two...

The reason why MM2H changed was because there were large numbers of application from Hong Kong alone (10K - 20k) during the 2 years riots. It created an immigration issue instead of came here for retirement under the Ministry of Tourism. That is why later the program changed and put under Ministry of Home Affairs instead. Letting The Immigration Department of Malaysia made changes to the criteria as well as assess the applicants details.

Malaysia also wanted more quality MM2H instead of budget retirees. Most MM2H are enjoying the subsidy that Malaysia is giving to Malaysian. Malaysia is a country that has a lot of subsidy. Food is very affordable in Malaysia. If you don't wish to cook, then eating outside will not blow your living budget. A plate of the more luxurious Nasi Kandar rice with a whole piece of chicken, a vegetable and an egg or soya curd, plus a glass of tea will cost you about RM 15. Even if you were to eat this meal 3 times a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, that would not cost more than RM 50 which is equivalent to about USD 12 per day in food cost.

Taylor, as I have said before, I envy your life in Malaysia, hopefully the Malaysian government will change the rules and make it more accessible for others in the future. Regarding selling you place in the US and not returning to the US, as they say, never say never. The Malaysian government could for whatever reason make changes to the visa program and then you may well need a place to return to, so my suggestion for what is worth, is, keep your options open. She is blessed with wonders nature, climate, food etc. which was built by the 3main races and people in the Sabah and Sarawak. As you hinted If only they could get rid of the race based politics, Malaysia would be a greater place than it is. I understand many locals may have emigrated because of not being given a fair shot. I think most people misunderstood about social contract, it's part of our constitution. You should learn about our forefather who fights for independence. British want to give immigrant everything free which we native against because we Malay already weak economically With social contract, we agree to accept 700K Chinese and 300k indian as our Malaysia citizenship back 1957. And remember back then, only 1.2 million Malay alive back then after WW2 Sabah native and Sarawak native rights is same as Malay because they considered as part of Malay worlds. Let me break the history what British did 1) they allowed Chinese to trading with them but refused and prevent Malay from trading with British or any superpower that time 2) British give loan to Chinese and rich indian but refused to do the same to Malay because British afraid that Malay will doing rebel 3) British already lied to Malay sultan about only they only involved economy but instead they started to use their power with politics when sultan can't do anything without British permissions 3) British label out Patriots as rebel but praised anyone who supports them 4) British sold lands in Singapore, Penang, Malacca to Chinese immigrants without owner of the land permission, British using excused such as they got this land from Sultan but the truth is sultan never give them any part of the land, they stole it using hooks and crooks It's like native American have a land but US state government took them and accuse native American as a liar. Same tactics 5) segregation created by British empire - Chinese in cities and towns, their jobs is open a shop and tradings - indian, works in estate or British administration office - Malay, live in villages as farmers So, everything British did is to weakened Malay politically, economically and even socially. So when British want Malaysia to get independence, they still want to give immigrant free citizenship by ignoring they already got helped by British with everything while ignoring native rights Malay is not just majority but also have our own civilization. You can read empire such as Funan, Langkasuka, Kedah tua, Srivijaya empire and Malacca empire. We give immigrant their rights but they now spinning the words saying Malay is not giving them rights? You know what they demand now? They want to owned house for 999 years which is greedy because even Malay who only can afford house can only have 99 years of ownership. They also open illegal durian orchard in Pahang but after got revealed by orang asli, they demand the rights of ownership of that orchard using human rights. That's very absurd because Malay if we did same thing, will be straight to jail. Let me tell you about racial riots in 13 may 1969, who started first? It's Chinese political party who started to kill every Malay while they're in parade and changed the route that were told to use, they kill 500 Malay people and injuring more than 700 people. And you know what Malay did? We never strike them but instead we stay in our village and protect villager including Chinese immigrants because they also been accused by Chinese party as Chinese traitor. In 70's Malaysian government allowed vietnamese to stay as refugee in small island in Terengganu, the agreement is if the war ended, they need to go back to their country. But in early 90's, they refuse to go back and started to claimed that island as their. It tooks 3 years just to negotiated but they still refuse. They also pirating and harming malays fishboats from fishing around that island. So government took serious step by calling vietnamese embassy just to forced them out from that island. When those vietnamese heard about their soldier will come to force them back to Vietnam, only that time they agree to go back to Vietnam This what happened when Malay give immigrant their rights but they keep ignoring Malay generousity by manipulating us. So don't said Malay is racist because racist won't treat others like what Malay does. This is why there's a historian prof from Russia praised Malay race as the least racist people in this world. Malay is too generous to considered as racist

I grew up and spent part of my young adult life in Florida, too. However, I can't see myself moving back to Florida; it has gotten too expensive and crowded over the years. My wife and I have a house in the Philippines and we plan to divide our time there and our other house on the west coast part of the United States. We plan to do a lot of extensive travels throughout Asia and Europe, and only use our two homes in the U.S. and the Philippines as a homebase for when we're not traveling. Like you, I'm considering liquidating my home in the U.S. and just keep the one in the Philippines, where it's already paid for, to simplify our life while we live out of a suitcase, staying in Airbnb housing throughout the world, most part of the year.
