As we make our move into our Stone House in Portugal we need to think of solutions that will see us through for the next two years, and the most important of those is our sleeping arrangements. With only one bed and one bedroom, how can we fit all four of us in comfortably? Crusoe and Tara head to check on the bees.

One word: romance! I don’t think I would want my2 little boys peering over the side of the bed, watching Mom and Dad… also, listening to your conversations! I’ve been married 41 years and some of our best conversations, bringing us closer, sharing our hearts… has been in the bedroom. I think your answer is a sofa bed. You sleep in the livingroom

Or maybe build a glassed in hallway leading to your little guest house connecting to your stone house that way everyone has their space . If you worry about your boys being that far away then install an intercom system .

Great idea. But think if you mirror the under bed items they can do their coloring at the same time. If u build the dresser under their bed with the desk you should still have head board room for shelf's for the two of you. The nonsense about privacy for the two of you is just that. Obviously you get enough of that or Caruso wouldn't have a brother l. 😁😁😁Some just do not understand the need to have your children close. I chose to have a person into my home and it cost me a child. For the next 8 years my remaining children were within eyesight of me as a necessity for sanity. 😢 But all's well. Keep a close eye you never know. Parent the way you want your child to be raised not someone else's ideas ❤❤❤

Growing up now boys, you need your own space at night and so do Mum and Dad. Let your no be no's and your yes be yes Mums and Dads. Make the rules and stick together to the plans. There may be complaints but they will soon learn and it will be much better for everyone. ' Cuddle time has finished, sleeping has started!'

I’m sorry I never had kids so I’m probably not the one to say what I’m saying! But your kids are certainly old enough to sleep in the bedroom by themselves! I never understood why parents allow children to sleep in the bed with them or in the same room with them! It never made any sense to me! I know your circumstances you didn’t have room for them, but it certainly is time for them to be sleeping in their own room! I guarantee you’re gonna have problems with that because she waited so long but just think every night they sleep in there it’s gonna get tougher and tougher! I used to tell my friends with kids who thought it was cute when their kids misbehave I said pay me now or pay me later! Later when they’re 16 and they borrow the car and they wreck it and they find it funny Well that’s the pay me later! When you have a grown male who wants to sleep with an older woman, then you’re gonna understand where it came from! I am that older woman and I have run into young men and I was younger but older than them who slept in the bed and slept close to their moms! They were highly attracted to older womenwhen they told me their stories I could understand! So I’m passing this on to you. This is not healthy at all! I’m the older woman who found this out with a lot of young men when I was younger thank God it wasn’t stupid enough to sleep with him, but they were attracted to me because I was older because I slept in the room with her mothers for quite some time.

@@carolranes91 that's not a thing. It's adults who sexualize co-sleeping and results thereof (yuk), children and most people don't think that way. Co-sleeping is a beautiful way for children to bond, feel safe, and grow into strong, independent adults. I practiced co-sleeping and my children are very independent and self-assured, and there is plenty of evidence that co-sleeping is beneficial for children and the family unit.

John is creative, build a "treehouse" in the bedroom with a mattress or bunk-bed-split-level space for the boys to share. Make it special so the boys feel like it's their club house area. That one corner between the door and widow would be big enough for toddlers.

Poor John and the lawn! The last time this happened to my lawn, I turned over the dirt for reseeding and found tons of little white C-shaped grubs, which it turns out were immature Japanese scarab beetles eating the roots. Not sure if that's the case here, but something you can add to the soil if you're wanting to keep it all organic are beneficial nematodes, which will interrupt any number of parasitic critters that kill grass. They also feed on fungus, so can be helpful if it's a fungal problem, too. Good luck!

It looks like lawn grubs... in Australia root feeding lawn grubs are the larvae of Scarab Beetles, which includes Japanese Beetles, African Black Beetles, Argentinian Scarab, Christmas Beetles, Rhinoceros Beetles, and Cockchafers. Adult beetles are often shiny brown or black - although Christmas Beetles can be iridescent green or gold - and easier to identify than their larvae. Good organica recommendation above also you can treat with chemicals. Love your chanel and all your projects guys !!

Personally, my 2 boys had their own room when they were that age ; then later they each had a room of their own . They could always come crawl into our bed if they had a bad dream- but after a cuddle they went back to their own bed. Now, I understand that others like to Co sleep … to each their own!! But at some point, you will want your privacy back as a couple 🥰. Encouraging independent sleep is a way to help them feel confident 👍 John, the bed you made is very nice ! If you decide to place the beds above - with steps and a safety railing , and a desk underneath on each side -- will be a nice solution while you wait to build your big home ! Alternatively, a sleeper sofa is an option …. Bees 🐝 are mysteriously quiet ????

I think when you guys have completed your house, and got most your big projects out the way, John could start a channel building his wood working wood shop - then doing projects for people/yourselves around the local area. Building beds, furniture etc. I am exactly like John, self taught at wood work (although i was an aircraft engineer), and the stuff you discover along the way is extraordinary. My biggest learn is, you are only as good as your tools. Love you guys Mark.

Re: the lawn - possibility it could be moth worms - I think they are called webworms or army worms. The grass normally turns yellow and then goes completely dead. To find out if that's what it is, take a bucket of water and add some dishwashing detergent - pour it over a bad spot and if present the little buggers will come up to the top to get air - best to do in the early evening. Soapy water is important, just like it is when spraying aphids. They do not look like grubs - but are longer, more skinny, and with strips down their backs. It is treatable with some, I hope, natural agents - the entire lawn should be treated.

My husband made a small child's bed to look like a boat for our son...he was the captain with jammies that resembled a captain's outfit and a special hat. For our daughter he made small bed that resembled a Princess castle and her jammies resembled that. It took a few days to get them to get used to a separate room, which by the way, was just a wall away from us...we ended up lying down with them a few times, then they were finally convinced it was their space and they didn't need us so close. Just a thought!

My oldest son slept with us until he was two. It was quite the task to get him into his own bed and we never did that again with our other two boys. 😂😂. Sometimes we do what we must out of necessity, but while they are still fairly young it’s easier for them to move. The older they get the harder it will be.

Just a thought for your bedroom status. Now that you are moving the kitchen to the stone house, what if you moved your bedrooms back utilizing the upstairs and down stairs for bedrooms. Kids upstairs and you down. You could use the stone house for your living room, kitchen etc. I think that this might be a more adaptable to sleeping. The kids may sleep better as well as you. It has to be too toasty with all of you sleeping in on room. I don’t know the size of the rooms where you were living previously, for me this arrangement would fit you better until you build. Just a shot in the dark. Cheers

I think it is very important to acknowledge boundaries. Your relationship came first and should stay first. This will give your boys a sense of order, security, respect, and confidence for their own lives. They should have their own space and learn to be secure there. I know it’s hard to let go of the baby years, but the reality is that it is on you both to equip them for life in all areas. It’s time for everyone to grow into maturity.

"Slotting" solution: You dont need a headboard on the new bedframe. Remove it and reinforce the sides with wedge-shape supports. If needed you could slightly modify the base length so it will "slot in". Also place some padding on the legs so it doesnt scratch your floor.

Hi Newbys, You’re doing such an incredible job! My husband and I love watching your videos every Sunday during breakfast. You should definitely consider creating a tutorial or online course on woodworking. I’ve always wanted to make wooden art frames, but after seeing you craft simple furniture, I’d love to try my hand at that too! The thing is, I have no idea where to start, so an online course covering topics like tools, types of wood, and important things to watch out for would be super helpful for me-and I’m sure for many other curious people you’ve been inspiring. P.S. I almost never comment on anything, but I just wanted to say that I feel a real connection with your story. My husband, our 10-month-old son, and I recently moved to Portugal. We bought a plot of land near Lisbon and have been waiting for over a year now for our "awesome" municipality to grant us building permission. We’re dreaming of starting our home, creating our lawn and garden, and it’s so inspiring to see the incredible progress you’ve made in the meantime.

The beds are super brilliant, John is very clever. Every girl needs a John! If the kids beds are a little long for your bed, perhaps pull your bed forward 10cm, so they slot in, saves having to stuff blankets or use blankets ,especially if they are only temporary. Love your new home, its beautiful x

Hi guys. So nice seeing you. 😊 John: lawn death can have many causes. Everything from bacteria in the soil, oversaturation of dogs pee/wee, too much fertilizer, weedkiller or mosskiller , too little water (which shouldn't be the case). I'd try what you are doing now. However if it does not take there are three other plausible causes: a large boulder or two beneath the surface, old trash or too compacted soil. All three need you to dig down to find the cause... Remove whatever trash or boulders you find and (if no other reason is found) discard what you dug up and replace it with new soil. Lastly there are two last reasons: spilt gasoline/petrol/oil or that the patches have a slight rise over the surrounding areal and was cut too close to the ground when mowing. It can be hard to determine the cause, so don't beat yourself up with it! Well as always hope it helps. Oh and Hornets have armor wasps have not...

As a fellow wrangler of small boys my first thought is they will be jumping off their beds onto yours 😂 but creating them a space up there would be a fab transition from co-sleeping whilst you're completing the new building 😊 ooh you could have a ladder one side and a slide the other!

Tara, if only we could clone John 😂😂😂. No doubt his doubles be snatched up in no time. Love the bunk bed idea for the kids. I think adding a additional platform, making them in a L shape with a rail around the top (for safety) a straight up/down ladder and a pole or rope to climb down be cool. A wardrobe underneath up against the window wall with end tables next to the bed, that can double as desks. Maybe a cubby along the underside of the kids beds with lighting instead of table lamps to free up space. Oh don’t forget to put glow in the dark stars on the ceiling for the boys. Absolutely love your family and love how many viewers you touch, as I read some of the comments. In this twister world I can imagine you both inspire many to dare to dream again, and pursue those dreams. Many hugs & blessings 🥰❤️

Jon has amazing natural talent for building and creating, I always enjoy watching one of his projects come to fruition. You all are rockstars sharing the same bedroom. We had to share a bedroom with our 3 kiddos at one point for about a month.....it was challenging for sure. Here's to hoping you all get blessed with a good night's sleep soon! 🤞 😊

Awww, I remember the touvh nights. I coslept and breastfed for 2yrs with my son and what worked was a 2 month countdown to his independence. We did it according to the moon so it was 2 new moons and 2 full moons and the was a big boy in his own bed and no more boob. He enjoyed being part of the change and and the weekly reminders of when he was goinf to be a big boy. He would still jump into bed with us some nights in the beginning but it really made it smoother and less teaumatic foe me and him because he felt like he gained a bed didnt lose anything. I think we underestimate how kids can adapt when we give them time to process. You are doing a great job and one day you will sleep through the night! I promise, it happens eventually 😂😊

I agree that the boys are old enough to sleep in their own space. If they are as close as you propose, they will find their way to mom's bed and dad will be sleeping in one of the other beds or on the floor. Don't worry, there won't be any harm done emotionally or their ability to bond. It will teach them independence and taking ownership of their own space. The trick is if they resist and come back to your bed, remove them and put them back in their own beds. Sometimes I had to do this 4 times a night. I know it's easier to just let them stay in your bed but at the end of the day you are the adults not them.

The grass looks like an infestation of winter grass. They grow in little tufts in winter and in summer it dies. I actually kills the healthy grass and leaves those brown patches. It needs to be pulled out as soon as you see it manifesting and before it goes to seed. Loving your adventure... From Gordon's Bay in the Cape, SA

I thought you discussed in one of your videos bunkbeds where the dresser is? You can put drawers under the bunk. Push your big bed along the wall side and build dressers desk etc on the following wall. And a desk table at the nightstand area? Just a thought. Love watching you all. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Love Crusoe bee suit!!

Has John checked for lawn grubs and/or beetles? They cause great patches of lawn to die. You can get sprays to eliminate. Or, perhaps, check your water supply - it may have some mineral content that is not tolerated by lawns (but then again, you’d think it’d be all over). Has he “cored” and dethatched the lawn? You probs know all this 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😊 I have to say your KZbin has to be my very favourite of all I watch. Your family is just gorgeous ❤❤❤❤ 👋 🇦🇺

I can relate with the lawn problems! I think you might have grubs. They will ruin a lawn in a hurry. I had to have a professional sprayer come every couple of months during the Summer to keep them at bay. At one point, I had to replace 2/3 of my back yard because of them. When you finally begin to notice the damage, they have already taken over and eaten the grass roots. They are horrible. But, in order for me to have a beautiful yard, that became my only option. I wish I could tell you what they put on my yard, but whatever it was, it worked. There's nothing more frustrating to work so hard at creating a beautiful yard and then to have grubs come and ruin it! Good Luck with finding something to get rid of them.

When we got married 50+ years ago, our family doctor gave us some good advice. Never sleep with your children. Bad for their health and very bad for your relationship with your husband. Intimacy is the cornerstone of your relationship, and that is impossible with kids in the bed.

Love John’s perpendicular raised bunk bed idea! If you allow 100cm width (not 80), the whole back wall could have 20cm deep cubbies (lowest level padded?) for books, pillows, clock, pajamas… I keep thinking steps or a ladder going up and a slide (detachable?) going down would be fabulous (with window issue addressed)! There are some great bed tents that could be fun as well, combined with a proper railing. Have fun!

I love the plan for multi-level beds, I can just picture the 'den' effect of the desk underneath. I think the idea will make a psychological separation between you and the boys enough to break the practice of sleeping with you, but without separating too far to be comfortable. As long as a sense of adventure doesn't keep them awake. They'll settle in. The grass on your lawn is hard to read without physical contact, but I notice the affected parts seem to be near shade. As it's changed after providing water I'd suggest withdrawing water from those patches. Grass will survive dryness, but damp spots are where moss usually develops. In the open where it's exposed to wind and heat, it dries more easily and the ground will take the water. I think it's preferable to aeration to use a sprinkler. You could try scarifying the ground where the patches are.

A tiny house call for maximizing every square inch. John’s vision with the elevated boy bunks that are in essence your headboard is a very cool idea. If you’re planning on changing your 4 poster bed, you could have above your pillow a built in-headboard shelf/nightstand under their mattresses and still have a wardrobe and a desk. I’m envisioning a midcentury modern style headboard. Another storage idea storage is a flip up mattress like in a caravans/campers. Whatever you do, it will be perfect for you all. ❤❤❤❤
