I feel that Kasey was able to 'peel back' Eminem's emotions to expose the tragic early years of struggle. I always felt like his original was like a 'punch in the face' whereas Kasey slowly unfolds the raw emotions and the finally lets her own pain show through. I think she did Eminem's song true justice. And a shout out to her awesome band....Thanks guys you were all so respectful. Love from Australia.

The beauty of it is that the emotions were always there but the relentless cadence of rap doesn't really allow for more subtle emotions - the fear in that first and second verse never really came through in the original but here you can hear that he really was at first afraid of failure but then afraid of what success does to you. People have used it as a hype song ever since it came out because it works so well as that but hearing it in this form you realise how lyrically it's almost the exact opposite - fear and frustration and only really gets to a hype stage late which is where this one changes key and goes into that Janis Joplin style swamp-rock flavour.

The arrangement also emphasises the change in the lyrics. The first couple of versions are in the 3rd person, talking about someone else, then it shifts to the first person and she lets lose. I love how that's emphasized in this version of the song.

I think she captured the emotion behind what it’s like to devote yourself to being an artist, the struggles that lead to those defining experiences on stage. When the art becomes a series of moments that can only exist when you give way and lose yourself to them.

Kasey Chambers is well known in Australia, even though Country music is not huge over here, but it is known that Kasey likes to wander into other genres sometimes. She is a big fan of Eminem's lyrics and has wanted to perform this song for a long time but couldn't find the time to come up with an arrangement to do this song the justice it deserved. Covid gave her the time. Bands were not able to tour so she spent the lock down working on this epic version. I love Eminem but I cannot say that I have understood all his lyrics. Kasey brought those words to the forefront and showed how brilliantly Eminem writes and how deep his lyrics are. Together, Kasey and Eminem wrote a masterpiece.

Butcher, you’re very correct this is the hardest thing they play, it’s long, it’s wordy, it’s complex 👍 I particularly enjoy watching men react to this, some men actually let the emotion wash over them, others you can see actively avoiding letting it happen, distracting themselves, not watching video, fidgeting etc. It’s very interesting 😂 She doesn’t do anything similar to this but “Rattlin Bones” is a great song, sung with her ex husband Shane, anything off that album or the song “Ain’t no little girl” official version. I love all her stuff including her early music BUT most reactors won’t like her early stuff because her nasal tone is much stronger than in this Kasey loves Eminem’s lyrics because he puts it all out there like she does, she had issues in her early days getting songs played commercially. During COVID she finally had time to arrange this & do it justice, this epic journey of a song is the result ❤

A couple of thoughts: 1. How brave it was to make an 8 minute song. It's a really long time if people don't like your song, if you can't draw them in. 2. How much the emotions are built upon. As John said, it starts sad and gets progressively more angry. Taking the full 8 minutes to do that really makes it an emotional journey. 3. How much she gives you permission to realease the emotions when the band comes in, and then again when the lyrics finish and it's just the music. I see it in reaction videos that it is not just me - everyone smiles when the band starts. 4. I still love the keyboardist living his best life in the background. :) Good reaction guys.

The gentleman on the steel guitar, is Kasey's father Bill; her father helped Kasey's arrangement of the song. At time of this performance, Kasey has been performing for over 30 years; she started around the age of 10, performing in the Dead Ringer Band(along with father Bill, mother Diane and brother Nash). Kasey went solo in 1998, and released her debut album "The Captain" in 1999(the album was certified 3 x platinum in Australia); she was critically acclaimed by receiving the ARIA(Australian Recording Industry Association) Award for Best Country Album, upto 2017, Kasey has released 12 studio albums along with multiple hit singles. Kasey was the youngest female to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2018. Rolling Stone said "besides being the youngest female recipient to be inducted, but her career has always boasted a maturity beyond her years!". In 2001, Kasey was the first Australian country artist to have an album "Barricades & Brickwalls" and a single "Not Pretty Enough" to be Number One simultaneously.

Raw unadulterated Brilliance! I was totally blown away when I first “experienced” this Phenomenal performance, amazing arrangement & pure to the emotional interpretation of Em’s masterpiece - just legendary!! Em gave her his permission (or the owner to the rights of the song did) to release on Spotify, that says it all 👏👏👏 She is aged 46 at the time of this performance 2022. I’ve always been a fan of Kasey, she is a freakin amazing & talented musician, artist & woman. But this was next level genius & so personal for her. She has lived every second of this track through her own story. The performance wasn’t filmed, she put a post out after the show to fans present to please send in any footage, the compilation of which you see. The band killed it, matching & building with her energy brilliantly. Long time band member Brandon (I think 🤔) on guitar & the vocals that nurtured the momentum & her dad on slide guitar making it sing like a phoenix - all of them together made this one of the all time best live, for me a rebirth, not a cover, that I’ve ever heard, seen & felt….to my core. Great reaction from 3/4 🤣 - new subscriber from Tasmania Aus 👍🏻👏

Kasey Chambers is an Australian legend: the youngest person to be entered into the Australian Music Hall of Fame, a dozen albums and has more than 30 ARIA Awards (the AU Grammy's). She is beloved but is ignored by radio and was shunned by Sony. She's been performing in her father's band since she was 12 years old (her brother is backing vocals and her dad is on the steel guitar on stage here). She had some pop hits in the 90s but her heart and soul is Country in her own style. She wanted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this song because she loves Eminem, and she had the time to rearrange and compose this masterpiece during lockdown. She is showing so much emotion because she has lived this to a degree as well. She is now 48 years old and a mother of three. This recording is the first time it was ever performed live and was done at the end of the concert. They thought it went well, so they used the recording from the sound desk and asked their fans who were in attendance to provide any footage they had to composite this one together. While there has been no public approval from Em, she has been allowed to put this song up on Spotify without challenge.
