Algae can be a problem with diesel, and so can cumulative contamination from those Jerry Jugs that never quite get emptied, and never quite get cleaned. There is much wisdom is taking a sample of the diesel you are about to buy, and putting it into a narrow glass or clear plastic container...check for color and clarity, then let it sit while you have a beer, to see what settles to the bottom. Main tanks should be completely drained and flushed periodically, and if you can avoid drawing from the bottom of the tank.. so much the better. Rough conditions and low fuel levels just up the odds. Your fuel filter(s) and water separator are your second line of defense ( although we think of them as Primary.. but checking and rough filtering your fuel before it ever gets into the ship's tank is really the primary check, so that contaminated or funky diesel never ever gets into your tanks . One of my favorite tools.. is a cheap ($10) battery operated fuel transfer pump ( harbor freight and various mail order outfits). It is meant to pump from 5 gal Jerry Cans, transfers about 1.5 gallons per minute.. wont spill a drop if you are not blind drunk...and best of all you never have to stir up the contents in the jug by up-ending it. So unless things are rough. let the jugs sit and settle, and them use the pump... which wont take the last (dregs) unless you force it. runs on couple of D cells.. use rechargables and solar to save waste and cost. Brilliant tool. Get 2 ! Some biocide will stop algae growth, and even cloth and funnel filtration will remove much of it. Draining that see through water seperator/filter and changing the element.. needs to be a religious observation.

Keep the ZINC block tightened! i had a beautiful old ketch, and the zinc block fell of while under motor and went through the prop, snapping off a blade, and causing the stern gland to instantly flog out. very interesting to see that contaminated diesel, i have never seen it so dirty. Nice fix, good job! The real reason that the prop shaft needs to be scrubbed clean is because the zinc needs to make good electrical(!) contact. Otherwise the principle of sacrificial corrosion doesn't work.

You should probably have your fuel tank professionally cleaned. Always use BioBor diesel biocide and a Baja filter when fueling. Your engine will always be unreliable unless you do.
@stephenburnage76872 жыл бұрын
It is hard to get professional cleaning out of the US. What I do is empty my fuel tank regularly by pumping everything through the filter and into a spare can (before changing the filter). Better to discover what you have in the bottom of your tank when in harbor.
@leeoldershaw9562 жыл бұрын
@@stephenburnage7687 once the algae gets going it coats all the surfaces in the tank. Even if you kill it the particles will shed a long time clogging filters quickly. Buy a case of filters.

Real quality time with parents. I feel very privileged to be able to join in. Incidentally, I still don’t think that you run the engine with the key in the right position. Click to on and then to start and then it should spring back to the run/on position. If you then turn it back to the off position then the alternator is not energised and it won’t charge the batteries. I guess a volt meter would tell you if you are charging or not. Re fuel bacteria, I am told that there must be water present for it to survive. Try and keep it dry in there, he said helpfully! Go well you intrepid free spirit. 👍
