This stance of Wing Chun is more closer to Baijiquan or Hakka martial art styles: the back is slightly hunched like a wrestlers stance for a stronger forward section. It also allows you to pull back slightly when facing punches and give time to either move, slip or block. Most Wing Chun are upright and when facing with punches they lose structure and pulling their head backwards.

The issues I have with Tu Tengyao's videos are that they are slightly sped up when he executes the techniques, and his theater(the person receiving the techniques) sometimes flies back or falls in ways that don't match the physics of the strike he used. I've watched dozens of his vids, and although he is fast on his own, you can notice when the video speed changes. Also I have no doubt he has a lot of power behind his strikes, but when he does a downward knife hand to his theater's dan tien and the guy flies up and back, it makes it look fake. So I'm a torn on Tengyao. What you called the beach ball / cobra pose is referred to as the barrel position in some Hakka styles. It's how they generate their shock power by sinking in and shortening the ribs. It's called Dip Gwut Gung in Chow Gar.

When I look at any videos or movies, I look past the editing and you should too. You can tell many things from the video… A wing chun school that uses pads, punching bags , gloves and go full power with it is a good Wing Chun school. I’ve been to and seen too many schools that just do patty cake hand slapping drills. You can also see that he utilizes ALL parts of the body to strike… knees, elbows, long range, short range, footworks, solid foundation and great angles/positions. For me that is all I need to know to see its legit. And yes people do fly that way if you hit them with great structure. A Muay Thai kick or Karate punch with strong structure can also send you flying if he hits your centermass

As soon as you mentioned the beach ball theory/ area I liked the video. I feel like that is something I grasped on instinct. I have fished a lot over my adult years and as a big guy, I adapted to standing like that to keep from standing straight up all the time. When I started WC, sinking into my core was super natural. After I started watching him, I realized how much intensity he actually is able to exert while still being able to train student in a controlled learning setting. His rising and sinking is snappy and almost jab-like in the fact that he uses it efficiently to exert the power necessary without compromising his own position.

Sifu Tu Tengyao's technique is exquisite and he shows great intent in all his movement. His movements all have that crispness/sharpmenss that we associate with Wing Chun as presented in the classic Hong Kong movies. I enjoy his shorts a lot as well. But, to be fair, they are all choreographed exchanges (even when the students are in pads)...so, I think we have to reserve at least some small level of skepticism. I'd love to study with Sifu Tu...but if you gave me the choice of studying with him or, say, Adam Chan in Vancouver. I'd pick Adam Chan every day.

Appreciate this video & breakdown. I REALLY appreciated your comments about stance & structure. I am also a Wing Chun Instructor (SiGung Dun Wah/Sunny Tang lineage). To me there are many scenarios where 60/40 or 50/50 weight distribution is much more appropriate & effective. This is one reason I like the Wing Chun structure that is taught & demonstrated by Sifu Wan Kam Leung (much more rooted & solid structure than the typical 70/30). Another thing I'll say is that a lot of the realistic success in applying Wing Chun comes from "pressure testing" with non-cooperative opponents. I teach Boxing as well & have trained Judo when I was younger, so this helps me give students a more realistic understanding of how to deal with Boxing or grappling & what can work & what will not work. Unfortunately, many Wing Chun schools do not spar or pressure test, & they don't spend enough time learning to defend against the methods employed by other systems of combat.

Great review. I 100% agree with you on the 70/30 split - it's meant just for training and developing your root in Chum Kiu.. One of our instructors in our club comes from a wrestling background and he advocates the 50/50 stance. I also know what you are trying to convey with "Faan Sau" or continuation of strike. It's continuous attacking, not a one-hit-wonder bitch slapping/gotcha from chi sau. You commit to the attack and keep following it up once there is an opening.

@@MrCBTman At least in sport fighting you're actually fighting a resisting opponent who is allowed to knock you out. It does not get much more self-defense than that. There is never such pressure and fear in self-defense arts not to mention the other guy trying to knock you out is a stud who knows how to fight. If you can handle him, self-defense within reasonable limits is easy. But the kung-fu guy has no idea if he will shut down completely if a bodybuilder throws the first punch and does not play into his hands.

I’m a huge Bruce Lee fan, but we gotta be realistic. Problem is Lee spent more time acting than learning. He was 90% self taught. He didn’t have a teacher to correct him. He thought he knew it all. He was good, no doubt about it, but watch his training footage. He wasn’t that fast or that strong. Mike Tyson was a lot faster in his prime.

For example a more "karatified" pak sao absolutely will work, (which I would argue is how it was intended anyway) but what I mean is that most people are just swatting their arm out at them with the hand , which is only gonna work if they too are only just "swatting" at you. But a pak sao, in my opinion atleast , is intended to be a forearm strike to their attack with your entire body behind it .

I can see potential in his movement, even though most of his footage is sped up, and his training partners are clearly acting. However we should praise those who do realistic pressure testing, not those who do cinematic demos. We already have the Ip Man movies for that. David Peterson might not have been the best fighter to come out of the Wong Shun Leung lineage, but he's very knowledgeable about the system and has a great way of explaining it. His new video series is gold for those not yet familiar with the fundamentals of Wing-Chun. They explained everything they're doing is way advanced and I would have a long way to go before I get there. Talk my mom into taking me to a class to watch she thought it was cool took one look at the release form and said hell no you'll get hurt. 🤣 So for a couple years I would periodically go and observe class while trying to convince my mom. I am not a hater of wing chun. I try using resistance bands, one around the waist, and one each hand. To keep balance and try to sparr with ppl of different martial arts. Learn doing 70/30 and switching 30/70 and 50/50. I tryed aikido and picked up alot of good and bad

Our patron siant of Whoop Ass { Bruce Lee } wanted to popularise Win Chun for someone else to expand on it cause he wanted to develop a style that was a none style in turn building the foundation for MMA and the idea of building your own style that is uniquelly yours , rather than getting into a fight with one style why not a menu of styles to chose from or a mixture of all the above ; since Win Chun was part his foundation anyone that studies his style is also going to study Win Chun . You are Welcome , I forgive you any ways .

On the Bruce Lee wouldn't dummy picture. I understand your point period but in that position. Wherever you are, it's a yielding position, not a striking or crashing. A lot of people aren't taught about energies. Landing the soft points into the dummy. Firmly Move it around the point and any striking is usually an exercise teaching yielding. And amazing training tool

Any martial art MUST have a sparring element to it, and really should only be done when two exponents have enough skillset under their belts to be relatively safe within the spar exercise. Sparring is not just about fitness or endurance training, it is also about being able to "pressure test" what it is you know.... The saying is true... "If you cannot spar, you cannot fight either"...

The problem I have with 50/50 weight distribution is your ability to block leg kicks. I think a 50:50 spilt is ok when your are using heavy punches but I think that weight distribution should only be momentary. Two or three heavy leg kicks and you have lost your balance, power and your footwork.

Hi, Izzo. On this vid, you've mentioned the continuous hitting principle. One of the things I believe some Wing Chung practitioners (and entire schools) may improve is not using the chain punching as a continuation standard. Because when you punch a head, you get your hand normally broken and, probably, also your wirst. I know a jab on the lower chin can knock someone out, but one needs to know how to do it, not spinning the bycicle wheel with the chain punch. The reason is that I think we have to hit soft over hard and hard over soft. So you can hammer a head and punch a rib, for instance. Due to the simulated fight that is mostly trained in the Wing Chun, and it is how it must be as we cannot use a fighting system on a ring, this is not a sport. Even Krav Maga uses massive direct punches to the head, that I think it is suboptimal; it is not about Wing Chun alone. Not speaking about your vids, just reflecting in some schools I have observed and I think this is a subject that needs to be adressed among the community. Because WC is not a sport, it is serious stuff.

Now, the video of Leung Ting to share, lol. I was training under one of Boztepe's schools. There is no way to fight using these stances. It is okay to learn to root because you have to use the entire body to hit, and that's when these stances make sense, but not as an initial position. I mean, you may adopt a boxing-like stance, then root down to hit; meaning blending your knees back and forth. And you have to sink to deliver full-power attacks, as well as rotate and penetrate with your whole body. I think that is one of the reasons why Wing Chun has these stances. If someone's grabbing you, hit him (biu jee, groin, whatever), fuk sao like his wrist, and blend your knees as you rotate immediately; that John Doe is in a serious problem now. But, it is not only applied to Wing Chun. Every single martial art is compromised by popular application and practitioners who do not really understand nor care about how to apply the training

Been preaching this forever now, it seems, but few want to listen. Call it the cobra pose, rounding of the back, etc... it's also known as "opening" your back. You may have talked about it in such a way in past videos, I'm sure of it. Boxers are some of the best at it interestingly enough. One of the most important things when doing Chi Sao! So many people Chi Sao for decades, still complain of shoulder pain, not realizing, the pain is mostly do to a "closed" structure.

an easier way to explain how to do the latt thing ,,just tell em to round the back over and roll the shoulders over like your in santee ,the latts will flair out/on automatically ,umar is kinetic linking and your right 99% of practitioners don't even know what that means ,thats actually high level knollage.

Well nothing wrong with sparring, tho most do not understand it and aren't gaining much from it but a workout. But in fairness it is not sparring which makes wing Chun but the concepts/details it actually pays attention to while other arts would look right over it.

He knows how to drop weight into elbows, and has got a good video editor... That is it... If you can strike properly, have ko power, that can be enough for the street, for a surprise attack, whatever... BUT I see 90 percent of his stuff, are things he never ever going to do in a real sitaution, in sparring, or in a brawl! His demonstrations are for the movies, BUT seems they do proper padwork, so maybe the can strike! Taking a punch, brawling, different storry... I still love wing chun, but when I started kickboxing, I learned how much more important to be able to take a punch, than practicing fancy stuff! As you said, sometimes 15 punch, and people won't go down! So yes, this guy can use his body, but at the same time, what he shows, he would not do in reality! If he can hit you first, he has a chance, but can he take a punch? I doubt it... I have seen many people awesome on the bag, but become hesitant in sparring instatntly, punching weak, etc... I agree with you about that, wing chun is all about agression, and THE STRIKE!!! But another perspective on the guy, I have never ever seen even ONE chi sau clip form him... For me, wing chun is special, because the internal aspect, leverage, "chisaso grapling", ability to handle supperior force, etc... You know Hawkins Cheung, Tsui Sheung Tin, Alan Orr, even Sifu Sergio, who is full of shit, but can move well... I love the art, or playful side of wing chun, slow or taichi like chisau, focusing on structure, offbalancing opponent, etc... According to my taste, I could see 0 from this guy, the stuff i like about wing chun, BETTER than kickboxing, muay thai, etc... Because if we talk about striking, Boxing, Close range Muay Thai is supperior to Wing Chun style punches, maybe the elbows have similar quality... (Wing Chun punch is good, because it is nontelegraph, but weaker than a hook, cross, and not faster than a jab, but similar speed it has, aswell SHORTER than a jab) What I try to explain, I like the taichi like wing chun, specially balance manipulation in chi sau, that is what makes wing chun unique for me, aswell the non - telegraph strikes, and the flow of the movements!!! BUT if we talk about brawling, I would choose Boxing, and close range Muay Thai... I cannot see anything from this guy, that makes wing chun special, or different for me, form other striking arts! He can punch, but if I want to punch, I choose boxing with some elbows, headbutts, etc... So long story short: -He has structure FOR STRIKING!!! -I haven't seen even one clip where he does freestyle chisau, do not know how he handles energy, that is not static!!! -He is using too much video editing, and hard to judge him, because he is basicly a demo star! -Overall the stuff he is doing, he would not do the same way, no where close in a brawl, or sparring, but he has the strikers chance. Looking at all the factors, he is nothing special for me, or I cannot judge him, becuse all I see is show off... His demonstrations are for the movies, and I'm sceptical about him! Dk Yoo is awesome when he is demonstrating, not so awesome when he is fighting... He can teach you how to move fast, he is master of movement too, but fighting is different! Is he a master of Wing Chun? I'm not sure about that too, as I said, I could not find any chi sau video about him, and FOR ME wing chun is all about Chi Sau first, and Strike after... BUT THAT IS JUST ME! Wing Chun for fighting should be all about the strike first, BUT this is my taste :)

I’ve been training since I was 9 yrs old , I was a good amateur boxer and UK Junior army middle weight boxing champion and have had many battles on the street, I did Wing Chun for almost 4 yrs, and another far more useful system called White cloud under Dereck Gordon.. I’ve never seen Wing Chun used successfully outside on the streets or anywhere else, I’ve seen a Shoulin Monk fighting in a ring and guess what, he wasn’t using Preying Mantis or Tia Chi, he was fighting like a kickboxer, it’s not hard y to o understand why, it’s because Wing Chun, most king fu’s are useless. I think the UFC and MMA and bust all those myths 💯💯👊
