@Devilpup3 жыл бұрын
@@ozorhaar9575 oh my friend, let me tell ya about camping. I grew up camping with my parents often. We didn't do much cold weather stuff until my sister and I were older. But it was always the BEST time! Always an adventure no matter where we were. Sometimes we'd pack our head in a few miles deep on trails, others we would just hit camp sites. It was always so wholesome. There's always little issues but you end up laughing at the end of the day. Food on a campfire can't be bested. And the quality time with family and friends is better than anything! Camping is 100% worth it. It's therapeutic. I've never done the fancy trailer or RV camping. Always tents, makeshift shelters, things of that nature. I definitely recommend. And now that I have a little boy of my own, I've been taking him out and he has an absolute blast. The dirt, the scrapes, the cuts, the bruises from tearing through the woods, he loves it, so I love it as well! I truly hope you do get out there and experience it. The silence, the animals, the fresh air, the primal nature of the entire situation is the best medicine in this world! Stay safe, and remember the most expensive gear isn't always best. Fleece and wool are great for cold weather. Fleece dries quickly when wet. And wool is the only material on earth that will keep you warm if you somehow manage to get it wet. Plan your trip, and make sure at least someone knows you're going out. Just in case something goes bad.

Dude. I don't want to laugh at your suffering but I am literally in tears from this video. This is an all time classic and immediately one of my favorite things you've ever done. Some of these shots like you saying you need to figure out what to do, then drinking beer and popping bubble wrap, or you sitting on a cot with zero shelter grilling on a heater, absolutely belong on a TV show. Top rate work man.

Sleeping in a barn with the cows is so much fun, feeling the warmth of their breath, the smell of the hay, some moos here and there. Our friendly goat and the dog near us. Watching a movie on the back and white TV with the lights off. Very calming. That would be too comfortable to Steve, he likes to though it out.

Failure is always an option Now i'm wondering if it could work with a few changes 1 - Don't set the gasebo roof full height, if you put the legs at the lowest you'll still have a shelter but it won't catch the wind as much and it would be easier to heat up 2 - Put the nylon walls outside and bubble wrap inside for extra insulation while the nylon stops the wind 3 - Don't cut a door and just lift your way in and out, the integrity of the "structure" will be better

I wonder if going top to bottom instead of bottom to top with the bubble wrap would have made a difference. I was also thinking that making a door outline with tape and then cutting in the middle of the tape would have helped keep it together…
@zz5043 жыл бұрын
I was thinking this as well, also maybe a layer of plastic wrap to secure the bubble wrap on the next test. And maybe a stapler.

For anyone using those tents in the future, I ran a farmers market stall with one and the wind can be your worst enemy. My go to fix was a few milk jugs filled with water bungie corded on opposite corner legs. In colder temps like this, you could also fashion a weight with pvc pipe and a filler like cement or sand. There are also store bought weights, but making them can be cheap enough if you have the materials arround. Also dropping the top a little can also reduce the lift the wind produces. Great Content as always steve, hope you're nice and warm now.
@JohnGault23983 жыл бұрын
I do the farm markets as well and I use those corkscrew stakes for dogs to anchor my tent, it has held down in a fairly strong wind on the ocean shore.

I love this because in a sense this is what a lot of real camping is: Embracing the discomfort and enjoying nature regardless of conditions. Like you said, this was an experiment (and an entertaining one at that).

@moteroargentino79443 жыл бұрын
The thing of camping is contact with nature and simplicity, luxury is a bit counterproductive but so is discomfort. Both get in the way of enjoying the moment. Survivalism in the other hand, guarantees you lots of discomfort and even pain because it's about pushing your limits.

Now I know why I've never seen anyone else try to make a shelter out of bubble wrap. Cling film is much better. It is very strong and it sticks to itself without tape. Thank you for showing us what not to do. If you find yourself in an emergency situation and all you happen to have with you is a hundred foot long piece of bubble wrap (a most unlikely scenario but you never know), you'd be much better off wrapping yourself in it than trying to build a shelter. At least it won't blow away. Getting out for a pee could be awkward though.

A little spendy, but an ice fishing hub makes a great winter camping tent in combination with screw anchors for the frozen ground in lieu of stakes . If you ever revisit the gazebo tent idea, try lowering the canopy on the legs for a lower wind profile and/or use some screw anchors (or even large wood screws) as stakes. Loving the videos, Steve! Have a wonderful new year.
