Shadow Home Secretary, James Cleverly, has accused the government of 'betraying the British people' by axing the winter fuel allowance for ten million pensioners.
He says Labour said nothing about cutting the payment in their manifesto, so have no democratic right to do it.
He claims pensioners will 'rightly feel betrayed'.

You are falling for the same bull that 1 in 4 pensioners a millionaires. There are of course some who through hard work and had the ability to make contributions for a private pension. But there are also many more who aren't in that position. So it would appear that a larger number are being penalised for relatively few. This is the same government who last year were lambasting the Tories declaring that many pensioners were being forced to "heat or eat". Whilst it may be true that withdrawing the Winter Fuel Allowance for some pensioners may well have been considered amongst other many measures for making fiscal savings, the subtle difference here is that the Tories didn't act on that consideration. Whereas Labour have. Is it possible that Labour are less concerned about upsetting pensioners as they don't consider them to be core voters as opposed to say Trade Unionists or certain ethnic communities?

People forget ae well pensioners are retired so often in the homes longer each day , some due to illness never getting out . Older people feel the cold more and suffer from illness quicker and for the need for longer periods of recovery . That’s why they need more heating and we as a nation are neglecting our elderly as it is TV licence now reinstated lack of home care and support . Lack of nursing home facilities if we want pensioners to be less of a financial strain on the tax payer we need to support them in their own homes as much as possible. I’m disappointed in this government especially when I here they claim winter fuel allowances on there Second homes. Hang your heads in shame Labour .

Based on ONS report between 2019 and 2020 i think, but yes around 27% have a total wealth of over a million, but that is including home value, pension pots etc. go and look at the report, its their on public record, if you think its incorrect you could take it to court as disinformation. but i suspect the findings are correct. what the issue will be is means testing, and that should really be done on testing for deposable income.

I have never met a millionaire pensioner . I am 92 and savvy, belong to groups, am tech Able. Most pensioers cant afford Wifi. Most Pensioners i know shop for yellow labels. If you are unlucky you will live to my age. All my peer group worked about 50 years , staring at 14, , paid their stamp and bought into the idea of security in old age. We couldn’t opt out, it is the law. If you work, you pay. Those of us who got on did so by attending night school and paying for our qualification certificates. Don't think we are all living in the South of England Try South Wales. You can pick up,property in the Welsh Valleys for under hundred thousand freehold. But there are no jobs, no public transport and often no Wifi signal. So it is not millionaire territory and it is perishing cold here , hundreds of feet above sea level. Dont spout rubbish like this , but you must get out and about and leave the home counties to see reality.

We can't afford things unless of course you are an unskilled immigrant, in which case according to the EU in 2016 each one costs £250,000 so for the 630,000 ( that's 700,000 less the 69,000 that were skilled work visas ) that came last year that cost us £157 billion 14 times all the winter fuel. When you talk about millionaires they are houses bought in the south years ago, and don't forget that from the 60's to the 90's the mortgage rate was from 6% to 20%, they did not get the advantage of 0.5% bank of England base rate for 15 years from 2007 to 2022.

If I as a responsible member of society who was fortunate to work all my life with a wife who has done the same and raised two children who are now married and have children of their own are being penalized for being careful with what we earned up to retirement. I have paid tax and NI all my working life in addition paid tax on interest on savings which has been already taxed and if I need surgery or dental treatment it is being denied what has been done over the years with my contributions? I demand transparency on what money is raised by HM Treasury annually and what is done with it to the penny. .. I;m a pensioner, not entitled to Winter Fuel Allowance, Pension Credits or any other State Benefit, because of a private pension... it was £50,000 a few year ago,... well below that now... I pay full whack rent/council tax, and HMRC tax when I need a withdrawal.. which is becoming more regular as out of State Pension of £860 month I've £300 left, for food/bills etc. how is that WEALTHY?? ..... there's MILLIONS like me . using lifetime savings to pay the rent . the fact Starmer needed pinning down as to who the hell he meant by "working people" indicates he hasn't a clue who/what Labour stands for anymore .

It is rubbish about claimants being poor. Many get double what pensioners get if on DLA, PIP and housing benefit and yet by the very fact of being old, pensioners are frailer, unable to do heavy work and less fit. A state pension is less than a minimum wage average.

I think the winter fuel should have been looked at because it was being given to people who dont need it. Only those on pension credit will get it but when people get pension credit it is to bring their income up to the level people with the state pension get thus insuring all pensioners get approx £220 per week. The only trouble with this is those who just get the £220pw because they earn it dont get pension credit and so even though they have the same income of the pension credit they wont get the fuel allowance. It should be looked at the amount of pension they get and given to those who get £440 per week or less in total income. Thus those lucky enough to have got a small pension built up wont lose it either.

Would it be fair to say most of us pensioners got a job, worked all our lives and now pick up a works pension as well as the state pension. Would it be fair to say most of us pensioners purchased our council house to get onto the property ladder and we are now mortgage free debt free because we saved and lived within our means. Would it be fair to say most of us pensioners don't need the winter fuel allowance and never spent it on winter fuel. That said, there are pensioners who do need the winter fuel allowance and will still get it, and more besides if they claim the benefits the system entitles them too.

£3 pw over the limit you don’t get it. Or free council tax. A single household on a pension will struggle even more.

I'm officially under the poverty line of income 250 a week. Yet I can't get any extra help at all. People think we get the cost of living allowances and pension credit (the gateway benefit) No we don't, we qualify for nothing. New State pension from 2016 retirees was designed to take you 3 pnds a week over qualifying for any help. So there will be pensioners on 11500 a year that won't get help. That is what they live on , pay bills etc. So Millionaires ? My ar*e !!!!
