I really liked the film, had no problem following what so ever. I like the fact that it is different from your usual drama/love story. The fact that it has so many moving parts kept me interested.

I saw the poster to this movie in the shopping centre and the tag line was, 'This is not a true story. It's a love story.' What. I can't explain how hard I laughed at how stupid that tagline was.

Keep in mind. This is a fantasy story first and a love story second. Fantasy stories are supposed to suspend your disbelief.

I'm just curious what your thoughts are to two things in the movie. One, why is Peter Lake's accent Irish when he's lived in New York his whole life?! That confused me just as much as Beverly's accent being British when her sister and father both have American accents. Also why when it's been 100 years is Beverly's sister still alive and she looks like she's only 75 at most? Just curious to your thoughts.

To address your problems with the script, it was written by the director of this movie, Akiva Goldsman, best known as the writer of Batman & Robin!

Batman and Robin was a toy commercial. I wouldn't base anyone's career off of that movie. The studio executives were the ones in charge of that. He may have actually wrote it down but he was only writing what they told him to. Same with the director and everyone involved actually.

I thought it amazing. I didn't read the book but I didn't have any problem understanding the plot. You're right, it's a fable, full of fantastic elements to serve as a metaphor to real life's situations, unless you get into the fantasy, you're not able to enjoy the story, which many people thought confusing, even if you set aside the fantasy. In terms of script, I had the impression thought that the story was too much squeezed, like sometimes there was no time to appreciate certain moments; maybe the book was to long or complex to adapt. But all things considered, I do think it's a film about human condition, romantic towards love, but mostly about life, with many moments of reflexion and scenes where not everything is supposed to be said, but shown, through a glance, a smile, an eye shinning with tears; emotion. Silence also communicates, and it's well used. Audiences have gotten used to films that "chew" the information, explaining every step of a scene as if to children. As a consequence, most people have lost the sensibility to interpret human emotion is all its subtleties, which is just plain sad... Photography is beautiful, performances are good, with surprising cameos, not just Will Smith's, and the chemistry between, Colin and Jessica is breathtaking.

I saw this movie with my friends on Valentine's Day, all of us going in knowing nothing about it, and it's a day we always have fond memories about. We were completely unprepared for how laughably awful this movie was. Right from the beginning it was confusing and ridiculous, and only got worse/better. We could feel the disapproving glares of the (mostly elderly) audience as we unsuccessfully tried to hold in our laughter. To this day when I think about what this movie was trying to do I just get confused and amused. Ahh, memories…

I would not recommend this Movie, because, It was straight out Confusing. First of all, I have not read the book, which would have been a way where I could understand the movie, but I am more of a Movie watcher than a Bookworm. But, with that cast aside, The movie doesn't give you evidence to anything in the first 30 minutes. Firstly. There is no narration. Which makes it confusing for some people because in this movie, there is not a lot of Speaking, so, instead of filling in the void of no one speaking with narration that describes the story, they decided to leave it quiet during the breaks where no one speaks. Also, Beverly's Disease is not named anything, which left me confused because I didn't know WHY she was dying. Thirdly, there are characters such as The little girl visited by Beverly that all of a sudden showed up in the movie without us knowing who she was. Now, with Beverly's disease, She DOES talk about her disease but she doesn't give it a name, and she talked too fast where you couldn't hear her tell Peter when or how she was going to die. Also, The Magic Flying horse does not make sense. It jumps high magically without knowing how it can jump that far. So far, All I know is that a white horse living in the 19th century can fly. And for an unexplainable reason, The dark angel goes crazy and gets cracks in his forehead and I don't know why. At first, I did not know he was an angel until I watched this youtube video. It wasn't clear to me that he was a dark ANGEL because instead of representing that he was a dark angel by letting, lets say, Black wings grow out of his back, they gave him cracks in the forehead which really make him look like Angelic from Dark Shadows. Again, I only watched the first 30 minutes because it was boring and confusing where I decided I didn't want to waste my time watching a movie where it's going to leave me hanging. Overall, I do not recommend this movie.
@manuandrade2484

First of all I didn't read the book either, but yes, there is narration, out loud; Beverly's voice gives you all the introduction you need to understand it. #1 It's a film about human condition, so it's only natural to have these moments of reflexion and scenes where not everything is supposed to be said, but shown, through a glance, a smile, an eye shinning with tears; emotion. Silence also communicates, it can tell a lot in a scene. Audiences have gotten used to films that "chew" the information, explaining every step of a scene as if to children. As a consequence, most people have lost the sensibility to interpret human emotion is all its subtleties, which is just plain sad... #2 Beverly's disease IS named: consumption, at 25 minutes in, as she drinks tea with Peter; you weren't paying attention. And in the same scene, she's perfectly clear about when she expects to die, and not fast to the point of not being able to misunderstand it. English isn't my native language and I was able to get it. #3 The little girl is clearly Beverly's sister, I don't remember if said out loud, but clearly implied due to their proximity and affection. #4 There's a clear explanation about the horse once peter goes visit his native-american friend, who tells him about guardians or that appear as children, often as animals, especially white horses. Crowe isn't a dark angel, he's a demon, that's how demons look like inside that reality, that doesn't have to be an explanation, it's a FANTASY film, a fable, full of fantastic elements to serve as a metaphor to real life's situations. To enjoy the film you have to leave you cynicism at the door and embark in it. And 30 minutes, are you joking?! Perhaps you should go watch something of the likes of Fast and Furious, seems like the kind of thing you can understand: obvious dialogues, jaw-dropping action scenes and a story that gets you distracted for as long as you're staring at the screen and adds nothing to your life.

I was lost. I have never read the book and the movie made no since to me. The story was so complicated and tried to do so much that I was just lost. I started catching on at the end, ish. Me and my friend both left the theater with headaches from just trying to process this movie. It should not take that much brain power to under stand a romantic movie. I agree B, would not recommend to my friends.

I had a sinking feeling when I first saw the trailers, as Beverly Penn and Peter Lake between them took up maybe 200 pages in a 600+ page book. They're two of many main characters. The cut will be a loss, but most likely completely unavoidable. It would have been far more inconsistent than it was already at risk of being. But if the movie switches tones often, that does mirror its source material quite a bit for good or ill. If it wasn't challenging enough to read for its prose and complexity, a good number of readers end up dropping it because it switches so quickly from humor to mystery, philosophy, tragedy, and fantasy. But horror? That's somewhat new. In any case, I've been expecting worse - Winter's Tale isn't really a love story as much as a tale about love and fantastical cosmic balance - but it looks like they've hit a couple of marks at least. I expect I'll react to it much in the same way as Cloud Atlas.

I really liked the movie but I haven't read the book. This movie made me want to read the book. You could tell it was a very 'big story' trying to be crammed into a movie and that there was a lot more character development and plot development necessary. I liked the story, thought it was really different.

FINALLY went to see it. Wow, yup it's got all the right intentions and ideas, and gorgeous lighting (and lens flares woo hoo!) but the execution is problematic and I don't think many people will like the abrupt shift between the first and second parts of the movie...Also Colin Farrell's hair - not exactly a 1915 style, is it? The only thing I remember of the book was a terrible scene of New York burning - obviously too much to pile on an already confusing but pretty movie.

Great review as alway.... I must admit I got exited when you started talking about how original the film was.... Hollywood being original?! STOP THE PRESS!!! Here's something I want to watch. This was until you mentioned it's based on a book. Not as excited now. It's great that the makers took challenging source material. This said the question we've gotta ask is: why can't film makers be this original?! If studios are willing to bank roll a challenging film based on a novel, why not fund one that isn't? The book isn't THAT famous surely that hordes of fans will flock to see it. It's not like it's a Harry Potter/Hunger Game/50 shades of the exact same sex scene is it......?

anyone who read the book I guarantee they loved it. read reviews of the book, you'll see. rarely will i read a book twice, this one I'm reading a 4th time. it's a story, that when you reach the end, it re-colors everything prior in a new light, and you uncover a deeper layer that re-writes the entire book in your mind. the movie was pure shit. they took a couple themes from the book, added a bunch of devil angel tripe, a Will Smith joke that was added for god knows why. it's like the screenwriter skimmed the book to pull names, got half way through, then made up a hill of tripe to end it. imagine someone making a 2 hour movie of the bible, then added biker gangs, and Jesus was a stray dog that had a 3 second scene. Mark Helprin, the author, left the theater vomiting blood. If you liked this steaming shitpile of a film, READ THE BOOK! It's the closest thing to magic I have ever experienced.

Im seeing the movie on thursday still reading the book scorcesse is right the book goes to great lengths and i already know the movie butchered it. Characters were cut storylines were cut story has actually been simplified or expanded in ways foreign to the actual source material. I really wanted to see it and i still do but honestly if this was 100% to source a material it wouldnt be rated PG13 XD
