This is a 1972 413 Wedge from an RV that was put in my 78 Power Wagon, with the original owner claiming full engine rebuild with .030 pistons, a steel crank, heads shaved and a new cam. I put less than 4000 miles on it and it wiped a cam lobe and lifter. A full engine rebuild is going to be getting done with a collaboration with ‪@JAMSIONLINE‬

Yeah. I have 5 near me. One is a specialist in drive shaft balancing, one is a specialist in race engines, 2 are general machinists and one is an older guy that is not far from closing up.

Yup, I have one in my area run in the back of a large mom and pop auto parts store. Never had an issue with their work. But I cringe every time I get the bill😂. Oh well, great work is not cheap.

it’s probably cause new engines are so much harder to rebuild, throwaway engines or usually just not worth it that the only machine shops left are just keeping the old stuff running and doing performance work, because obviously there’s no new cars rolling in they all just end up at scrapyard once their time is up and the owner just buys himself a new car from the dealer.

Funny thing is when i was watching your video and mentioned you were looking for a machine shop i thought of Jims Automotive right away as i follow them and watch all their vids. They are the most knowledgeble machine shop channels that i follow and i enjoy their content. I cant wait to watch your block getting done. Ive built a few engines and 😅 an super careful to keep the cylinders oiled and keep it wrapped in a plastic bag at the end of each day to keep dust, dirt and even hair out of it. Our current machine shop is 30 miles away, depending on the season it could be a 2 or 3 month wait to get engine parts back. They do excellent work but damn times have changed.

There's a engine shop in Butler, Ashcraft Speed and Marine. They are top of the line engine shop that does Monster truck engines to small cars. I have had a few engines done by them; you could eat off their shop floor! I have never seen an engine shop that clean.

Paul: Never trust what a seller tells you about the so called Engine Repairs. I bought 2006 Lincoln Mark LT that supposedly had all new Timing Chain Components replaced as new. Within 5000 miles of me driving it, the Right side Timing Chain Tensioner Seal failed. The Chain jumped a Tooth and the Cam/ Crank correlation DTC was thrown, (i e.) the Chain jumped a tooth on the Cam Phaser. I subsequently rebuilt the Engine with all new Ford Timing Chain components, VCT Solenoids, and a new Oil Pump. I cleaned the debris out of the Oil Pan and Pick- up Screen. The Truck has been running great for one year now. I like your Wood Burning Stove, we use ours as redundant heat and for emergency cooking.

Put roller cam, roller lifters and roller rockers in...spending dough I suppose...the zinc oil will become harder to obtain than it is already and the roller goodies work well with synthetic oil. Zinc going out the exhaust ruins catalytic convertors. I have been watching JAMSI for awhile. I was happy to see your site connected with them. I was told zinc is only necessary for valve train; roller hardware eliminates need for it so then can use synthetic.

@@peacepoet1947 whoops, lol. probably had it sitting on the lifter edge instead of in the socket or it snuck down below the rocker socket. I'd imagine it either had vale to piston contact to bend or full coil bind. it likely needs different length pushrods anyway, depending on the build parts and machine work.

Wow, brings back a ton of memories. I worked for Ed Miller racing right out of high school and we had a full machine shop and I can't remember how many 340/360/413/426 wedge/hemi/440s I built for racing. I think maybe the guy that bought the engine was probably telling you what he was told. It doesn't sound like the guy built the engine, he probably bought it from someone else. I did an engine swap in a 1969 Charger from a 318 to a 440 and the guy bought a "rebuilt" engine from an individual. It turns out it was out of a service truck with low compression pistons, never rebuilt. I'm thinking the whole time I would be going with the 426 hemi crate motor. Nothing like opening the hood and seeing those massive valve covers.

That is exciting. I dable in the mechanical side a fair bit, there's so much to learn. Especially when it cones to bearing wear, cylinder bore inspection, cylinder head and deck surface cleaning and inspection, its a different skillset. I believe that even though you and I are more adept at the electrical portion, having a basic knowledge of what's should be is very important. The cars sensors can give good data on what's happening, and knowing more of the mechanics can help us better understand why.

That’s one of the most beautiful power wagons I’ve seen in a long time. I love those trucks, my son and I are big fans of Dodge trucks. He drives a very clean 92 short bed 4x4 318 auto, he’s owned it and daily driven it for 9 years with only routine maintenance. I’ve owned a 97 12 valve 5 speed for 25 years, back in 2020 bought a new Ram 1500 5.7 4x4 and absolutely love it as well. My son and I are looking at a 92 ramcharger as a father son project.

True on the RB 413. Very low Compression on your engine may 8.0 to 1. My 383HP 10.25 to 1 sat for over 25 years after rebuild and 3 years of previous drag and street use on NOS in unconditioned spaces. The rockers were loosened as to keep the valves closed. No issues after car restoration in 2012 and refire in 2014 to today. I did have a rocker failure and bent pushrod from an over rev in 2020 after a best in show win that caused no other issues. The cam was installed in 1995 and is a Mopar Purple 509/292 flat tappet! I used Kendal Straight 40W in the day and now use Valvoline VR1 SAE 40 High Zinc. Never have been an issue on my LB 383!

This particular engine is entirely out of my wheelhouse, but very cool to see! I'm definitely seeing storage damage on those cylinder walls, but I'm leaning more towards the painted oil pan being the culprit of your camshaft woes. Good time to see about the possibility of a roller-lifter conversion, though! I'm absolutely heading over to that JAMSI page and subscribing! The right flat tappet from a quality company is always good but if one has no budget roller is the way to go ! I have a few companies (2) I have yet to have a flat tappet fail. I also make sure if it is flat tappet my customers let me break it in for them .

Should be a fun project. I personally have 0 motivation to assemble any engines. Most I get into is pulling heads, swapping cams, timing work and resealing. Short block work is to much risk for me. I’ll do automatic trans rebuilds without blinking an eye though

CWC Textron has suspended cast iron cam core production for the foreseeable future so in the not so distant future a reground cam or a roller cam will be the only option. Most shops today just have too much shop work to do and don't have time to do a lot of assembly work. A big Chrysler is a pretty friendly engine that's not difficult to rebuild.

Sorry that the motor turned out to be not what was sold. I know of that pain with my friends when they bought an 55 with an original 272 Y block in it. We ended up having to pull it and go through it. When we did break her down, we saw in it a lot of FoMoCo pieces in it including bearings! I’m no machine shop nor a super mechanic but I was able to source a new old stock piston and get this ol girl running once more. I can handle this old school stuff. The new stuff is what I’m playing 52 catchup with hence why I watch your channel to help me get up to speed some. Thank you for sharing not only your knowledge domain but issues like this as well. Completely different note, that’s a beautiful boxer you have sir. I had two of them and they’re wonderful. Thank you for all you do!

Ford only made the 372 for early ‘55. Engine was upgraded to 392 for ‘56/ ‘57 and 312 for the T Bird and Crown Vic.

@@ellieprice363 yes the 272 was the early Y block and it went from it to the 292 and later to the 312 and 312 interceptor. This one is definitely an 272. Both the numbers and bore size confirm it. Cool to see someone knows a bit about it his weird engine Ford came up with. 👍

Something to keep in mind. Mopar motors were built with either a standard or automatic crankshaft. The automatic transmission crankshaft is not machined for pilot shaft bushing and people do a butcher job on them trying to make it work. Hopefully whoever done this motor actually found a crankshaft for a standard trans which would be rather hard to come by.

I would love a backwoods 78 Ramcharger! One you're not afraid to scratch. Happy for you man. I have some 8 lug hubs/wheel bearings, rotors, spindles, outer axle stub shafts for a full-time 4x4 set up. It all has like 5 miles on them. I converted mine to locking hubs. If you want them their yours, you just have to come get them (Pittsburgh pa)

Man, that would be a nice but sadly have to pass. Poor girl hasn't been started in years and when I did it had a miss "not a plug or wire" did not have the time to fix her, too many higher priority projects "mainly building-finishing house & small farm". Would like to have done same thing you did convert to locking hubs., full time nice, but 90% of time it's really not needed. She's definitely a brush truck lots of rust, poor man pin-stripping, cracked windshield due to rock falling from bluff, even has a bullet hole or two. Sitting with a piston down and a valve open will absolutely cause rust pitting if not fogged. I always spray some lubricant once in a while in the cylinders when I have a motor sitting for a while

As someone that occasionally does automotive machine work in my shop I can say Jim’s is spot on in what they do. Those heads are not original I don’t believe as the 413 industrial used a different bolt orientation on the manifolds and yours obviously didn’t have the massive truck manifolds on it so pretty sure it’s just a 413 truck bottom end with a cam and some 440 heads.

Wow, thorough, painted inside of pan! In olden times we used Glyptal inside the block to make oil drain back faster. My machine shop guy died and so did his knowledge and the business. No machine shops plus Chinese shitparts and asshole drop shippers like RockAuto... there's your state of the art: we're fuct.

So, I am new to this channel. I discovered this channel from watching the tear down and more recent short block work on this engine. My opinion is that someone actually checked the engine over and threw some paint on it and called it a rebuild. Sad that people do that shit. The cam lobe was coil bind, someone failed to check that the springs and valves were compatible with the cam, but with the paint issue the engine was doomed anyway so the decision to pull the engine when you did was timely. just my opinion.

Agree! 100% shotty work on the engine. But in the original owners defense, I'd have given him his asking price even if it didn't have an engine in it! They just don't come this clean. Thanks for the comment!

I worked at a dodge dealership back in the 70s and 80s you can rebuild 360 and 340 as long as bore taper is less than 60 thousands . 318 are almost as durable. I don’t know electronics that much but I was the engine guy . Just rebuild it 👊🏻 the 413 should be same as long as 60 thousands left to bore. Going to be great 👊🏻

FROM NOW ON you should just run diesel oil! It’s got more zinc in it than regular oil of the old days. I run the Rotella 5-40w synthetic blue jug, even in my 99 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L with about 330k on it. It runs great and it’s hardly seen an easy mile. I should know, I’ve had it since it was BRAND NEW!

Commenting as a go... I've ben watching all of your videos for years, but find PAINT on the inside of the OIL PAN?! Nah, you are in no way at fault. I can't even fathom why someone would attempt to do that. Flat tappet cams. Been there my whole DIY car guy life with SOHC VG30 Nissans. With what you explained about the Chinese metal not having enough Zinc... I feel. Give her the good 'ol ZDDP treatment on the very first oil change after rebuild. From what you've said, this definitely wasn't done. JAMSI?! awesome! I've been seeing a lot of their stuff coming through my FB feed. keep in mind a properly built 413 will build more HP and Torque than you can use in the vehicle you have just bore if needed and put flat top pistons mild cam you will be happy

20 years pro tech here I specialize in engine work and was a drag racer so I did a lot of builds. I met a lot of back yard do it urself people in racing everyone has “the guy” that builds engines in his garage. I’ll tell one story which is very common so I go to my buddies house he’s got this guy over helping him with his engine that had a rod knock, the guy just slammed bearings, oil pump and rings in it, I said how was the crank did u get it polished? Did you have the rod that was knocking rebuilt or get a new one? The guy said everything was good I laughed and said no way it has oil pressure after 50 miles. Well on the test drive it had low oil pressure and was knocking again. I went with my buddy to look at a street car with a engine that only had one hour of run time he said he just did it. Said it had these high compression pistons and when u have experience u know a high compression engine specifically if it’s fresh feels like a diesel when u shut it off the engine stops spinning very fast and this engine didn’t, I put my bore scope in a spark plug hole and it had stock pistons lol.

There are a lot of motors painted inside, or at least there used to be. But it has to be done properly. It's problem not rattle can paint, or latex house paint.

It looks like the guy forgot to paint the inside of the cylinders when he painted the inside of the oil pan. If he had, maybe there wouldn't be rust in the cylinders due to a protective layer of paint.

YOU HAVE TO USE HIGH ZINC OIL IN EVERY OIL CHANGE WITH FLAT TAPPETS. New oil does not have enough zinc to keep the cam and lifters in good condition

If this was mine, I would spend a bit more and go with the roller lifter system and steer clear of the flat tappets, unless vintage nos can be obtained, which I doubt.

A couple things to be aware of, ADD ZINC!!. Cheap Chinese steel, or not Best thing to avoid this again, is just go full roller cam and lifters. Money pit? Yep. But it will be so awesome when its done.

Just like Chevrolet in the 1970's with the 350 engines they had cam troubles and then in the late 80's it was the 4.3 engines with crankshaft troubles they were not hard enough and that's the problems of flat tappet cams today, not made hard enough And the cam lobe was already wiped out the first 5 minutes it was started for cam break in

ZDDP! if no emissions junk run good old school diesel oils. higher zinc content and other good things to keep lobes form going away.( or racing/break in oils made for flat tappet lifters.) if the engine sat around it likely rusted the lifters/cam lobes, which would make it need a "break in" run again and that rarely gets done after engines have sat around for long periods. it's hard to revive an old engine and wind it straight up to break in speed(usually around 3000RPM for 30 minutes), too many things go wrong and everything would need to be perfect/tested before starting. pre-oiling is a must before ever cranking them over, but of course that rarely happens. 😑 it's also possible, the lifter/lobe was already going away. **also if it was rebuilt, maybe never got a proper break in with correct oil/additives.

Powell Machine won’t do flat lifter work anymore. Too many ways for the process to fail. Roller cams seem to be the solution.

When I had Dicks do that Hyundai engine I gave them the pistons and they bored the block .020 over and put the pistons on the rods and rings on the pistons and I put the engine back together and got it running@@ScannerDanner
