Releasing an animal that was raised entirely in captivity into the wild without proper rehabilitation program is actually a very stupid and cruel move, since that animal has no clue about where to look for food, what to avoid, in case of elephants, a highly social species, it has no idea how to communicate or behave with its entirely wild counterparts etc. A REAL smart move would be to put Dumbo and his mom in a sanctuary (or a zoo as a last resort), like it's done with retired circus animals nowdays.

I don't know if its still around, but there used to be a place like this for apes and the like here in the UK. It was a park that would rescue monkeys etc taken as pets, ones wounded, ones freed from testing facilities/poachers, and bring them into an environment where their ultimate goal was rehabilitation. Get them socialised with other members of the species, get them their medical care, get them back out. Of course, some where never released for a variety of different reasons, but the organisation was genuinely ethical and alleviated a lot of suffering *whilst* still serving as entertainment and education for the public

Wildlife conservationist here that has had experience with captive animals (even if my current job is actually me reading sound data for whales in the Ocean, but that’s another story)... You are correct. And it should also be noted that the message that “no Wild animal belongs in captivity” is a bad message too. There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of notable endangered animals that have been saved from extinction due to captive breeding programs. There are some select few animals I think don’t belong in captivity, namely great apes (due to their social nature and intelligence, but I can let that slide since great apes are doing terribly in the wild) and cetaceans (with exceptions like Bottlenose dolphins), but my point still stands.

I'd also like to add the story of a couple who took a chimpanzee in and raised it like a human. If I could remember, that chimpanzee was eventually dropped to a rehab when she started being too aggressive for the household, and that chimp, once thrown in with a bunch of other horny monkeys, was terrified, distressed and confused by this sudden arrangement and has developed depression and existential crisis, because now she's forced to act like something she never thought she was. Thankfully she eventually coped with it, but literally just after two years, she died. They speculated that it was either poaching or homicide from another chimp, and it's honestly not far to imagine because chimpanzees are very aggressive, even to each other, and even if she's been socialising for two years, she was so inexperienced to save her own life that she really couldn't. And even if it was indeed a poacher, she was most likely shot because she's never encountered this problem.

Girl boss paint is, for the majority of a general audience, palatable and inoffensive. Legitimate critique of systemic sexism, racism, etc. is threatening, disorienting, and possibly alienating. @Hoopla105 жыл бұрын
@@TheSongwritingCat Is "girl boss paint" any different from "princess paint"? I agree with what you're saying to an extent. But we know the "princess paint" worked at reinforcing those gender stereotypes and images of patriarchal ideas of "femininity". These are broad strokes not nuanced detail. If we want that has Disney ever been the place to go? So the question is does shifting to "girl boss paint" ultimately help in where we want to go in addressing these systemic issues? I often wonder whether we get dragged into the "girl boss" is bad. Because that's what that Patriarchal mindset wants us to. While ironically calling for some nuanced complex character that communicates feminist ideas. But if Disney is propaganda (historically and now) then this is what you get. Simple, clear and two dimensional characters that appeal to children. "Girl boss" isn't bad. I do fear how Ellis is using the term woke. And while maybe in honest faith it's a voice among many who aren't. Who have a very "unwoke" agenda. Naomi Scott is an OK actress, but I hated what they did with Jasmine's character in the remake. 1) In the original, she wanted to marry out of love and not because of the law. This brought about a side we can sympathize with, while giving the story romance. In the remake, they gave her Jafar's role. She wants to be Sultan because she thinks she can do a better job than the current Sultan. 2) Her song. Jasmine is throwing aside guards, ripping down tapestries, all while saying how she won't be silenced. What does she do the next moment? Basically roll over and beg. This basically crushes the whole "feminine empowerment" flat. How cool would it have been if she had snatched one of the guards' sword and fought her way back to the throne room?

The thing I always complain about in these "woke" movies is the fact that continuously TELL us a female character is strong and empowering. She's a strong character? Fine! Stop TELLING us that she's a strong character and SHOW US! That's the whole point of a movie. SHOW US, don't TELL US.
@Veldrynvs4 жыл бұрын
The fact that they keep TELLING that message reveals that they don't actually believe it. A truly empowering movie would start with the unsaid assumption that strong female characters commonly exist, and never waste a second trying to prove it. This is why we get so many boring female characters, whose only role it to be an "inspiration to all the girls out there". How about some interesting characters of all genders with meaningful human flaws? Just imagine the case where you keep telling your daughter "you are NOT less capable than any of the boys!" Probably it didn't even cross her mind in the first place, but now you put that idea in her head. It's like when out of the blue someone tells you that you are most definitely NOT in danger. Now you are suddenly afraid. Similarly, the term "girl power" immediately reveals that it is not actual power, otherwise it would be just called "power".

You can wear nice dresses, sing and dance, being someone's wife or mother and still be a strong character, what's wrong with it? You can even be weak physically and still be a strong character? I'm not entirely sure that they actually care deeply about writing in strong female characters; I think it has a lot more to do with capitalizing on current cultural climate for profit, more than anything else. After recently watching all of Hayao Miyazaki's movies, the hollowness of Disney's female "empowerment" rings even more sharply. The nuance between Disney's "always strong and defiant" protagonist and Miyazaki's "strong and also capable of showing vulnerability at times and receiving help without needing to be saved wholly" protagonists seems especially important here. The scene of Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast immediately trying to escape after being locked up reminded me of a scene in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind where she is also locked up except she drops down in despair. She's allowed to be vulnerable as well as strong and courageous which makes her feel so much more human. And it goes for all of Miyazaki's protagonists, his movies are basically a series of characters constantly helping one another, showing that they may be vulnerable when left alone but incredibly strong once they come together. I recognize it might be unfair to compare a marketable cash grab approach to factory movie making with one of the greatest masters of animation but the stark contrast was too much for me to ignore

Like while she's on land Ariel will realise that her entire collection of human artefacts is actually rubbish thrown into the sea and other waste is polluting the ocean, and Ursula is the one influencing humans to pollute the seas to somehow weaken Triton making him easier to overthrow. So Ariel has to mobilise the sea's wildlife to lead an army against our new Captain Planet villain while Eric attacks from the surface (assuming he's even involved in the climax). Then when Ariel and Eric are married and Eric becomes king they'll make a speech about how pollution is bad and they're going to clean up the oceans and maybe stop overfishing.

No movie "needs to exist". I'm sorry, I know that comes off as a cop-out excuse but hear me out: Toy Story 4 was a movie that everyone was moaning and freaking out about how "it didn't need to exist". Even I wasn't sold on the idea, when first hearing about it, and was still rather skeptical even with the promise that they weren't just doing it for money and that it made Tom Hanks and Tim Allen cry. Maybe it was essentially greenlit for money despite the creators' good intentions, and maybe the movie gets worse the more thought you apply to it. But for me, when it came out, I was in such a state of despair and stress, that I felt like one that I needed to do to help cure me is take a trip to the movie theatre to see something that gave me a fun time. And that's what Toy Story 4 did. It livened me up for the time being. And sometimes, that's all a movie needs to do, even if the rest of the makers try too hard to "justify" the existence of something that is ultimately perceived as a soulless cash grab. I don't say this to try and come off as some sort of "Disney apologist", I'm just trying to say that if you don't think their content is good anymore, you can always go watch something else, like an Indie film. If you don't like capitalism, maybe it's time to go support socialism.

I also didn't like how the song "Speechless" was lyrically and musically completely different from the original Aladdin songs. It felt very out of place to me. It was a pop/rock ballad-style song (that wouldn't sound out of place on a typical radio station), while the original Aladdin songs are Broadway-style songs. There even was a "girl power" sort of song in the stage musical adaptation of Aladdin called "These Palace Walls." It's like why couldn't they use that song in the movie instead as their "girl power" song? It's a more well-written song (IMO), and actually stylistically goes with the original Aladdin songs.

The Mulan remake really was the culmination of egregious woke-posturing. They tried making it more “authentic to the culture” by... including a witch and magic??? Mulan is one of China’s many great stories just like Wukong. It’s been done and adapted hundreds of times by China. Disney tried to market itself to a market that has done a culturally accurate take way better and proceeded to alienate itself from the people who felt connected to Mulan’s plight and enjoyed the singing along the way in the west. Mulan is my favorite Disney movie, and to see it butchered really sucks.

The worst part is, time and time again the characters they change were already badass. Bell was smart enough to help her dad with his inventions at the beginning of the movie and brave enough to take her fathers place in the original, Nala kicks Simba's ass twice in the original, and Princess Jasmine was brave and kind enough to sneak out of the palace to see her people In the original. Don't add things that were already there. I will never understand why, If they insist on doing it, they don't just make new movies out of the old IPs. Like Aladdin but told from Jasmine's pov, or a continuation of a franchise. I'd watch a Lion King movie about Scar, like they did with Maleficent. Shit, they should even tie that in with their Lion Guard IP.

Take Mulan as an example... The best part is that in original Mulan, she had flaws when training but she was able to overcome them with perceverance and commitment. But on the Mulan Remake, she was a robotic impossibly perfect human being that were better than everyone else from the start and easily overcoming any flaws of obstacles that she had. That's not a figure that little girls can mirror themselves in, it just feels like an impossible character that we can't inspire ourselves because they are already perfect. Now take spiderman as an example, probably the most famous superhero, he has many flaws, struggles with his low paying job, it's still trying to figure out life and who he is, and has his own problems that he fights to overcome, with many hardships but he eventually does it, that's a character that little boys AND girls can mirror themselves in, he becomes stronger learning from his mistakes, he's not an ultra perfect princess that nails everything from the beggining to show how GIRLS (and that's important, because little boys also liked watching Mulan back then) and only girls are stronger than anyone else. Disney movies before could be watched by anyone and still be enjoyed, but nowadays is like having a lecture from an angry parent.
@c.m.93693 жыл бұрын
What makes the new "Mulan" even worse is that the young female character that IS somewhat relatable (since she doesn't have magical superpowers) is her little sister... who ends up becoming the good, traditional wife. So, the movie essentially tells people: "As a woman, you can be anything you want! If you have magic, that is. Otherwise, you better stay at home, get married and be a housewife. Because that's the role of regular women, and they should be happy that they can do that!" I actually don't object to the fact that a female-empowerment-movie also has the message that being a mother and housewife can be fullfilling and something some women might want. So, the bad thing isn't, that Mulan's sister is happy with that role in her life. The problem is, that in combination with how they show Mulan herself, her sister becomes the only other young female character who is looking for her place in that society. And if you show Mulan as being an equal to men ONLY BECAUSE she has these magical superpowers, and show the "regular" girl being happy with her traditional role, the message of the movie gets significantly worse.

Misogony? Empowerment. Oppressed? Rights. Everything once bad has been corrected, so, there's no need to even think about it! Bad practises, bad traditions, bad people no longer exist! We don't even have to "feel" bad, and if anything makes anyone feel bad, then get rid of it! The world is more perfect than ever before so why would anyone need to struggle anymore, right? Our world is perfect and we are perfect! There's no longer a need for a hero with human faults to show us how to conquer personal hardships or struggles. Get with the perfect times people..

Long story short, yeah they'd be dead within a few months, they would not be accepted into any native herds and have no skills to survive in the wild. Worst of all, thanks to the Human protagonists being so GOOD to Dumbo, he thinks all humans are friends now! And thus even if he did survive to adulthood he'd be easy pickings for the numerous big game hunters around during that time. Plot should've just put them in captivity somewhere nice, but then they couldn't appeal to PETA.

@Goliath Online Yeah, but was that lion raised in ways that facilitated an easy transition? I suspect that may be a huge difference.

@Goliath Online Galagya's right, also the fact that lion social dynamics would allow an unknown roaming male to facilitate himself into a group likely helped that release effort greatly, if the lionesses accepted him they would aid his survival by hunting for the group and also encouraging his own hunting instincts to click in. Also there's the possibility that the Male lion was born in the wild which would also help, do you have any info on that? Alongside all the difficulties I previously mentioned, Elephant social dynamics are far more complex than those of Lions, Elephant herds will only accept females who they grew up with and/or are related to into their group and many herds rely on knowledge passed down from previous generations in order to survive, as captive-born elephants are cut off from this support structure it make them much more difficult to acclimate to a fully wild environment.

Or something of that sort. But when it comes to racist characters or tropes in past movies they completely cut them out once they remake it. They do not try to acknowledge it. They do not try to improve upon it. They just pretend it doesn't exist and people were never racist. Disney doesn't actually care about supporting females or fixing their offensive history. It’s packed to the gills with loving homages to all of Disney; every extra is a reference to a Disney film in some way, the lady with lots of kids Edward meets heading up the stars is played by Pocahontas’ actress, the couple in divorce litigation are named after the Banks family from Mary Poppins, the bus driver has her hair styled as Mickey ears and so on. Disney and its tropes are examined by Enchanted and then affirmed by the narrative. It is the least mean spirited film I have ever seen and that’s why it is my favourite film.

Its just how the broadcasting network works and has little to do with WB potentially "hiding" their past wrong doings, unlike Disney. In fact, WB releasing those DVDs with messages proves otherwise. Jasmine was a boss before girl bossing was a thing and favourite for a long ass while. She was deeply cynical of the marriage process. Capable particularly physically and saw through Aladdin half way through the film. The final quarter of that film drives me nuts though. They Leia slave outfit her and shove her in a bloody egg timer so Aladdin can look like a hero. Both of them do so much better by pure wit. Her with the kiss fake out. Him with the genie wish. Just wish it had skipped 10 minutes.

It's proven animals coming from circuses cannot return into the wild,they would die cause they don't know how to act in their natural environment. They would've end up in either a zoo or sanctuary (some zoos are both) Still unrealistic in the 1910's I guess? But that's what would happen lol Small edit: I do like Speechless as a song.
