Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here,
Today we continue our Iron Warriors week, with a look at how Perturabo, caused not only his own downfall, but that of his Legion...
General Spoiler warning I will be discussing Horus Heresy lore, as well as the events of the Horus Heresy Primarch novel, Perturabo: The Hammer of Olympia. As always, I really recommend you read the story for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore. For yourself. Not only that, we help to support the great Black Library and Games Workshop. Because without them, we don't have this amazing world of lore. Link: www.blacklibrary.com/the-horu...

However if you wish to support the channel or would like to send me a gift as some have asked, then sending a virtual gift voucher to WolfLordRho@gmail.com using the link below will help towards the channel. During the Heresy, those guys hold their own like champs, basically saving the whole Horus alliance from collapse until the last moment, while the Death Guard was playing in the warp, World Eaters were chopping some civilians in a random moon and and Emperor's Children... well. The Warmaster knew that, and I don't think he lied when he told Perturabo, during the Siege of Terra, that he was his most valuable ally.

It shows that no matter how much the primarches are engineered that they are still, at their core, truly human. That they are plagued by problems and neuroses that humans have always had since the dawn of time. I’m not sure but where does this fit in the time line?? Has Horus fallen yet? Or is this a case that Perturabos home world has become non compliant?? If anyone can help that would be great.

Its ironic how Perturabo decimates his own men, killing them as if they had no value; however, he himself believes he is viewed as having no value by the Emperor and his brothers. Perhaps he is treated like garbage because he treats others like garbage.

In a cruel sense of Irony, Perturabo was a broken twisted man who yearned for the respect and admiration of the Emperor and fellow Primarchs. Meanwhile the Iron Warriors legion yearned for the respect of their own father.

@Zoomer Waffen Stop being a mental midget yourself. The emperor was quite clear in his first meeting and a primarch should have been smart enough to realize. Decimating his legion, even if he grew up with those customs was as heartless and unthankful as the emperor was.

Nicholas Castellano You have a good point. And while it is possible, even likely, that this was a part of the poor relations Perturabo had with others. I don't think this was the only reason. He is a very complex character, and his impulses, thoughts, and feelings are nearly always quite subtle.

Explains the real reason why they hate the Imperial Fists so much. It’s not about being the best at breaking sieges or defending them. Both sides endure much in sieges. The Iron Warriors mentally broke here and the Imperial Fists are a constant reminder of their failure. A shining example of a legion that didn’t fail the same mental and loyalty test. Quite sad if one thinks about it. Perhaps the Emperor didn’t realise that when you christen your son the lord of iron... it makes it very hard for him to ask for help.

Do not blame this on the emperor, Perturabo being fucked up in the head was obvious by his very first action with his legion. Only a sick mind can justify a random innocent warrior being beaten to death. Roman army conducted this for those who showed cowardice, they had reason. Perturabo didn't. He was a monster from the start. If the Emperor had a fault, I say it was that he did not execute him upon this action alone.

@Craft Zeppelin And what, disobey an order under the pretense that the primarch would withdraw it? If he was cruel enough to order such a thing in the first place what was to say he wouldn't get every one who disobeyed killed as well? And if they did disobey and he went simply okay well that is fine. Then it'd devolve into the primarch has no spine his orders mean nothing. Which is just as worse. Perturabo should never have given the order. Because both cancelling it and following it were equally as damning.

@Zoomer Waffen Thing is, did it REALLY need to happen? Decimation was for the cowardly. These Iron Warriors fought through Hell and never wavered in their duties. I don't believe he did it just because he could, but his logic and reasoning just seems too flawed to justify it. Fulgrim's legion were suffering and he managed to pull them from the brink without similar brutality (then again, every legion had a different character and, whilst the Emperor's Children may have been exemplary once, how they turned out doesn't reflect well on Fulgrim's disciplinary measures.)

The iron warriors spent years being ground against the worst the galaxy could throw at them, every battle they fought without complaint and never asked for favour or recognition. No wonder it broke their spirit to have their home turn against them.

Ben Siener to my knowledge of Caliban the rebellion was essentially a rift within the dark angels legion rather than the people of Calliban rebelling against the dark angels. That aside I’d argue the lion took it just as bad seeing as calliban was reduced to a pile of drifting rocks in space and he hasn’t been seen since that day along with the fact the hunting of the fallen and attempting to conceal the schism has come to define the modern dark angels.

The problem is, as stated on the video, that Peturavo cared too litle about his own legion. Massive loses, no explanation to the families of what was happening. Humans aren't machines, some off work maintenance and care goes a long way, that's why Guilliman is so efficient really, 80% of his efforts are off battle.
@immortallvulture
@immortallvulture 4 жыл бұрын
DaX I don’t think it’s a case of him not caring, Perturabo has always struggled with the human element, both within himself and with others. There’s another story where Magnus asks him to build a device to help with psychic research only for Perturabo to crush it in front of him to make a point because he saw cruelty as the most efficient solution. Likewise with the decimation it was his attempt to teach his legion to never settle for being the second best, it wasn’t that he didn’t care more that he didn’t know how to show it. One wonders if guilliman had the tyrant of locos for a father and been bought up in the grudges and political intrigue of Olympian society if he wouldn’t have turned out the same way.

Perturabo is often seen as less than his brothers. True he is not as charismatic, or as flashy, as most of the others. But that didn't make him any less great or worthy before he fell. He was mentally what his brother Mortarion was physically... I pity them both. Addendum: I KNOW it is not possible, whether from the in universe "rules" of becoming a Daemon, or the way that 40K works. But I wish that fallen Primarchs could be pulled out of the pit of pain, insanity, and corruption they drowned in and that their souls can find some of the peace they didn't have in life. Yes they were flawed, and yes they've done terrible things in service to their "patrons". But they are... were... human. And humans are flawed. I'd be satisfied with their souls, like Horus before them, being destroyed. Oblivion's nonexistence is better than eternity trapped with the "gods".
@angelusumbra5741
@angelusumbra5741 3 жыл бұрын
@Cian Abroad I agree, but the nature of the Warp and its twisted, insane, and malicious "gods" would NEVER allow the fallen, especially the Primarchs, have a chance at better if there souls were released. They're all petty and spiteful, and would do anything and everything to hurt those freed fallen to hurt the loyalists and especially The Emperor. So ending them completely, so they are beyond the clutches of those Chaos bastards is likely the best to hope for in 40K.

When you work with iron you realize. You can harden iron. But, if you harden it too much; it becomes brittle. Perturablo became emotionally brittle. Instead of trying to work with and learn from his brothers. As many of them worked with and learned from both the emperor and each other. He hardened his resolve to prove himself worthy with out help or input. He closed himself off from the very resources that could best help him get what he wanted most. Respect and kinship.

This book actually ended up changing a lot of the way I look at the world. The line where his sister says (and I'm paraphrasing here) "You are like a small child who complains that people do not praise you for your brilliance while you hide in the dark, attempting not to be noticed." Exactly that. Perturabo is, and always will be, a spiteful character. But a huge part of the tragedy is that it's his choice to be a tragedy. The world didn't shove all of this upon him; he chose to be passive aggressive, to stay on the sidelines, to pursue other paths. He disdained the spotlight, and yet complained that he was never in the spotlight. It really made me think about how I do that in my own life to various extents. It was a great book.

There is only one instance that I can remember of the decimation being used right, and it was a very severe case where a legio had grown stagnant on a very long term siege(Numantia, 20years of siege) One member of the Scipio family decimated the legion first thing after his arrival, then forced them into heavy training and forced labour for half a year, then made them build a fortified wall around the city to make sure it would not get more supplies from outside, and then kept the heavy discipline for the rest of the siege under the threat of a second decimation. And this is where Horus contacts Perturabo and congratulations him on saving his home and defeating the rebellion. Horus gives Perturabo the praise and acknowledge he craves, and ask Perturabo to join him against the cruel uncaring Emperor. And Perturabo, seeing no other way, takes the offer. PS. It is later hinted, that the unrest on Olympia was instigated/exacerbated by agents of the Word Bearers Legion....

Still my favorite Primarch having dealt with similar feelings of being undervalued and how the cycle of Abuse affects us all thankfully I had help to get through the moments of doubt and of the self loathing. Can't wait for Arch's Loyalist Version of him to come out to see what he comes with. Also Why couldn't Ferris Have Fallen instead. That would have been an interesting Heresy.

This Dialogue between Perturabo and his Sister from both the Novel and Cover; "What Happened to the Man I knew who wished for no more War? The Boy who drew such wonderful things." -Hes "Nobody wanted them." -Pert That Solidifies my love for the Iron Warriors ever so grudgingly hard. For their Bitterness, and the need of a Hug from the Legio Salamanders.

Man, I'm so glad that I found your channel. Your delivery of the lore is amazing, and detailed, what I feel like the community was missing. Leutin09 can start you off in the lore, explain the general setting, timeline, and characters, but you come to Rho when you need that nitty-gritty, line-by-line readings of the thoughtful moments in the lore. Love your work brother

Ok so there’s a lesson in Pert’s fall. He already believed in his mind that what he did was something the Emperor could not forgive. He may have invoked some sort of discipline or penance but he probably would have given a way for Pert to redeem himself. Lesson being if you fucked up, don’t keep yourself from atoning from it.

17:08 Perhaps this is why he was so troubled. When you are branded the greatest, the most determined, the most worthy, it is hard to feel like any of those. When you are branded that way, your imperfections make you feel like an imposter. And it makes it hard to ask for help, or give in even the slightest bit.

Holy shit, you can actually feel the pain that's eating away at him, the anxious dread. He charged towards the edge, slowing down towards the end. Enough to make him realize the consequences of his actions, not enough to come to a halt before falling down the cliff whose edge he now viewed with dread. Stuck falling, all he can think about is his mistake, unable to change his fate, unable to reach the edge. The one chapter i don't blame for their turning sides. ... What could have been, looking back...

Perturabo was probably made to be the one who can make the hard, logical choices when all else fails (diplomacy, restraint, etc). The problem is that he is all too happy to make those choices, without exhausting other options. Because his default is to be inflexible and logical enough to make those calls, he is both unable and uninterested to seek a better way.

One of the lines in that book that stood out was 'for all the promises of the imperium, the lives of these people have not improved.' As I've always said, the traitors were the ones who stood back and took a true look at what the imperium cost. The loyalists cared noting for the people, but for glory and the emperors approval. Daddy issues broke them all.

The primarches were in a difficult spot. They couldn't disobey their father. Yet on their own worlds, particularly guillimans worlds, peoples lives did improve. @deven6518

@@floriansiemer3553 peace is a matter of perspective. The horrors that plagued humanity before the crusade still existed during it and only got worse after. Most worlds only had to worry about fighting their immediate wars before the crusade. If being drained of your population and resources to fight and die on far off worlds for a belief that you were forced to accept on threat of death, while living a life metered, on the beck and call of foreign militaries is considered peace then yeah, it was peaceful. It's like looking at the Roman empire and thinking it brought peace and happiness because everyone flew the same flag. As the emperor said, they would unite the realms of man but peace is something else entirely.

Rather than just emotion, I think it is great that just like Kurze, Perturabo also reeks of Mental Illness. Perturabo too suffered from a type of "insanity". So you can't really HATE on him and call him emo or a little bitch. This is the tragedy of Perturabo, another brilliant mind, severely suffering from mental illness, which was left unaddressed, of which we see the consequences. To me at least it adds to the depth of lore and characters, when said characters, ESPECIALLY Primarchs, are seen and portrayed with mental illness in mind. And how such a person affected his surroundings.

Not really Perturabo is one of those passive aggressive people that hates what they have to do but never tell anyone that they hate it Instead they just maliciously comply with silent anger growing about their lot in life I recognise this behaviour because I have done this. You know what the solution is Tell someone your grievances and maybe it will lessen the burden. But Perty is of those types of men who are like “never complain about anything” and just expect people to know what you want
