I personally knew a woman like this (a relative of my wife). The problem was that she was VERY convincing until you got to know her really well. Only then would the inconsistencies mount up to the point where people started to doubt her. She even fooled me for a couple of years before I figured it out, and I'm definitely not a gullible person. One of the reasons she was so convincing was because she mostly believed her own lies, no matter how outrageous they were. She was a master manipulator and got people, businesses and churches to give her money, jobs and charity. Along the way she completely drained the bank accounts of two decent men who cared about her, squandered scarce medical resources on fake illnesses, and damaged the reputations of innocent people (including those of her own children). These people are NOT harmless.

No they're not! Sad story. Personally, thinking back, when a person lied to me and I believed them, (cause people believe a person doesn't contrive to tell deceptions) being me some how a part of my instincts would kick me in the brain and then I'd analysis that person. Odd huh. So no one ever manipulated or could take advantage of myself for very long.

I know a woman exactly like that, she fleeced a few men who were too embarrassed to make it public or go to the police here (Ireland). The damage she did is unbelievable, she even pretended to have cancer at one stage. She invited a friend to Italy, to "her" villa , there was no villa, she fleeced them when they got there. I luckily had been warned not to give her money but was told by kind people to give her the benefit of the doubt but not money.

Sounds like my mum! People like this are very hard to deal with, I am in my mums life because it's easier than cutting her out atm, but whenever she gets a new man and a new group of friends I have to bite my tongue when I meet them. I would warn them, but nobody ever listens til it's too late, she sets the foundations for people not to believe me because im "difficult" and "manipulative" with "emotional problems". Idk, it's a sad thing to watch, she's trapped at about 15 and her life is a wreck, she's basically a professional grifter, and us kids are who she comes to everytime she's burnt through her most recent round of social connections aka people she's got done using. It's really sad and awful to watch that cycle over and over, but also I can't help her 🤷‍♀️ she doesnt think anything is wrong on her end, she just thinks of herself as a perpetual victim and doesn't seem to see anything wrong with what she does to get her own way. Idk, I think people like this are so shattered inside that they don't even know who they are, have no concept of long term consequence, only what they want (whether or not it's good for them) at any given moment. Very destructive, especially to people who want to help someone in need

@@vee1545 Wow! It's like you precisely described my wife's relative. She also relentlessly used other people, and when they finally caught on she would play the victim and do everything she could to destroy the other persons reputation. She and her daughter joined the same church at one point. She immediately started playing the victim and asking the church for charity, and so the daughter tried to warn the church about her. She found out and did such an effective character assassination of her own daughter that the daughter had to change churches. It took about a year for the pastor to realize that the daughter was right about her mother all along. Watching from a distance, I could see that this woman was incredibly toxic and should be avoided wherever possible. Good luck with your mum.

@@marcusmoonstein242 thanks Marcus! She’s managed lol, sad to say but that’s probably the best case scenario with her at least at the moment. I hope that woman you knew got to escape her mother or at least keep a distance, it is far less toxic once you give up on the idea of helping them sadly. I’ll always love her, but she is not a good influence on my life, and I refuse to let her drag me down. 63 and still trying to use her charms to grift, she was a good looking woman in her day (and to her credit she’s still good looking considering her age) but I’m waiting for that foot to drop, when men don’t walk for her wiles anymore. Than she’s probably going to be more of a direct problem because she’ll be bored, and who does she run to when she’s bored? As a teacher, some interns are like this because they have popularity from the students unlike what they had while in high school. One girl really enjoyed it and seemed to forget that she was a teacher in training and you should act accordingly, professionally. I ended up finding out she was conversing privately with a student and dressed provocatively during a field trip. She was really enjoying the attention she was getting from the boys. There was another guy intern who groomed a senior student and slept with her after graduation.

I had one of these in my family. At first I thought she was amazing, then I gradually realised she was constantly lying. I didn't exactly call her out, but I showed by the questions I was asking that I didn't believe her. She went to my mother and told her I was a prostitute. There's nothing harmless about it, they know what they're doing. It's like stealing praise and attention.

My daughter had a friend who was a pathological liar about the most mundane things. It took me a bit to figure her out. She carried this to in grade school, taking other kids homework out of the completed work bin, erasing the name of the kid who did it and putting her own name on it. This devious in gradeschool!!! I can't even imagine these gradeschool kids insisting they did their work and for a time no one believing them. One day my daughter called me and said I thought I brought my history book to school, but it's not here can you check if I left it home. Nope your book is not here. I called the school and said you check and make sure little susy q doesn't have my kids history book, and sure enough, there it was. At the time I understood none of this, but now I know she certainly had some kind of a personality disorder. Even your pencils were not safe from her, in gradeschool.

It used to be considered just big fish stories. My dad did this his entire life to make his insecure self special. He was a miserable, difficult sort. To be associated with a disorder makes sense. His narcisstic behaviour was off the charts. To add tho, when i was young we lived in a hoity toity place where people were forever sniffing for pedigree. We were of average income among super wealthy people. School was incredibly clique-y. I remember maybe modeling him and telling tall tales to fit in. He was also abusive but in those days there was no where to go with it so I would make up victim stories maybe as a form of somehow expressing DV. As a young adult I came to my senses and stopped when i began to look inward. For me perhaps it was conditional but then again not pathological.

@@janefreeman995 My younger sister is like this too. Since I am older, I witnessed it first hand all of my life. She was jealous and always lying, antagonizing me, and exaggerating. She's also a bully and highly manipulative. And a user. I think it's narcissistic personality disorder, at least in her case. She even went to the extent of telling me in an email argument where she was once again harassing me, that she has a masters degree in psychology, which is hilarious. I asked my family if they were aware of this, and of course none of them were. She works full time in management in one of the biggest of the largest global corporate monopolies, so she probably took a couple of courses on how to manipulate people.

I know a young woman who displays this behaviour. The first time I met her she told me this bizarre story about her child who lived in America. She said she travelled to America as an exchange student when she was 15 or so, she started a relationship with a teacher when she was there and had a child. She said the Australian Federal Police eventually dragged her back home, but that she had to leave her partner (the teacher) and child behind. Over time when I would see her she would become vague on the details, the child's age, sex etc. I knew pretty quickly it was b.s, but she persisted with spinning the tale until one day she just stopped mentioning it. That was the first of her stories, there have been many, many more. I call them stories because she never seems malicious. At worst it comes across as attention seeking.

I had a roommate who probably had this condition. she had me at first until I figured it out. and once I did she started lying about me and convinced others I had done all kinds of things to them that in reality she herself had done to them (like stealing). she was very convincing because some of the things she lied about just didn’t make sense to lie about.

Almost better to 'be aloof' at the beginning; I'm tempted to say hit 'whoever it is' with a test of some kind, and if they pass, let them know you WERE testing, and grow the relationship from there. If rich, for instance, it certainly wouldn't seem wise to start conversations even hinting that you are -- unless you want to attract the crazies.

I think most of us have known someone who may have been a pathological liar. If you are lucky, that behavior won’t cause you or your circle of friends and family any major emotional or financial issues. The liar in my life self destructed his social contact circle by expanding the lies and wandering into totally unbelievable claims. When he claimed to be a family member of the sitting president of the United States, I had finally finished with dealing with him. I have to admit that I gave him far too much credit and wasn’t willing to challenge his lesser claims, although they all turned out to be false. Nowadays I may not publicly challenge a liar, but I remove myself from their life.

I saw the name in the title and assumed coincidence. I am only 2 mins in and I’m in absolute shock. Soon as I heard Campbelltown Australia I knew it was who I thought of. This girl is the younger sister of my brothers close friend through school- jim. I have watched this channel for over a year, and right now I’m listening to a story about someone I’ve literally met and knew. I remember she suddenly disappeared when we were teens, and I always wondered what the hell happened to her. This has blown my mind and I am still beside myself as I listen to this video. This feeling is bizarre beyond comprehension, I know the exact person this video is about 😧 Edit: a point worth mentioning that I forgot to add, from memory I’m pretty sure she was in the support/special ed classes at school. So from early on I think it was known that this girl was maybe a little on the challenged side. She’s less of a mastermind and more of a simple person with bizarre tendancies.

What is amazing about Samantha is there are documentaties made about her but known tell the truth of her childhood and teenage years. U don't go missing at 14 like that and end up a girl telling "lies" about abuse, trafficking rings etc for no reason. There is something missing in her story that God will reveal. I just received a reply on this comment and it reminded me of something interesting. I can’t be certain, but I think I actually saw Samantha in person at my local westpac bank a few weeks ago. I went in to quickly cash a cheque I received, and I saw somebody as I walked in that was on the phone, and it struck me immediately as “who is that person? They look familiar” and about a second later my brain clicked and realised it was her. The reason I say I can’t be certain is that she was wearing a surgical mask. And I haven’t seen her in person in a very long time. But the eyes and upper face, and general build screamed it was her. Tbh I think the wearing a mask lends to it being her as well. I imagine her as someone that would try to anonymise herself where she can. For context, it has not at all been normal for people (especially young people) to wear masks for a very, very long time here in sydney. I’m near certain it was her, and she was just using it to hide her face. I also sent this video to a friend of mine who was a teacher at our school when we were students, and he didn’t seem terribly surprised. This part I didn’t remember, or I just forgot, but apparently she was pretty bad even when we were school kids with lying and making up stories/ causing trouble with allegations etc. it’s something that’s lived deep within her since being very young.

Clearly, the government (law enforcement, etc.), the science based (mental health) industry has no idea what to do about lying of any kind. I never lied to my kids, not about Santa, "little white lies". Now they are successful adults and trust everything I say completely. It's a wonderful feeling when you get along with your kids great. Psychology didn't teach me this. To lie about Santa is OK in modern science. So, are "little white lies". My ex-wife promised to buy ice-cream if my son cleaned his living room of toys. I have a basket case of a cousin. He was sort of normal when we were 9-10 yrs old. I hadn't seen him for awhile, and I was about 16 yrs old, and he showed up where I hung around with my friends looking like a total hippy. He had hair down to his ass, a big silver cross around his neck, and really speaking all the hippy language, saying stuff like he was taking acid ( LSD ) and shooting peanut butter into his arteries. Well after that I had not seen him in quite some time, and he showed up at my office as a "big weightlifter" saying he was a bouncer at a bar. Before that time, he was a skinny kid, about 150 lbs, and then looked like this huge guy, probably was taking steroids. His latest thing he told me at a family gathering not to long ago is he has a Buffalo ranch, and raises them for the meat. Says he doesn't have too many, only about 1,500 head, and sells some off when he needs money. This guy is really a used car salesman I think, but suffers greatly from delusions of grandeur. Amongst my family we joke about him, and don't take him seriously, and we call him Buffalo Bob. It's too bad I can't get to know who he really is, and I refuse to go out to lunch with him, and listen to his constant BS. I sometimes wonder if he really knows who he is ? I think he does, but is not satisfied, so he lives in a fantasy world. -- True story.

Anyone have relatives (adult or child), who indulge in excessive, pointless lying? My sibling lies compulsively for no obvious reason other than emotional reward, always being victimised in her lies. She lied as a kid, making up stories about UFOs and ghosts. But as a teen, she toned it down to just this dimension, on our planet. Still very emotionslly heavy, dramatic tales where she is a martyr. The story will vary with each retelling and she seems not to care that plp talk to each other and compare versions. If a lie is pointed out, she will shout, blather, throw a tantrum or just layer on more lies no matter how absurd and wont surrender. It's whacky af. She also shoplifts, steals from friends/family, commits postal fraud like claiming items ordered online haven't arrived and spends excessively on credit. She also has bipolar disorder but won't take medication consistently. My older sister is a violent insecure narcissist, with no insight into her behaviour. Who will beat you around visciously in public if she feels criticised (mostly imagined, as we're all way too scared to say a word against her). Both are unemployable with no qualifications, with kids by multiple men and divorced/remarried. Not my idea of a life

She also liked to invalidate almost everything I said, gaslight me, & humiliate me. I finally recognized her as a first class narc. I wrote her a letter & told her our last conversation was our last ever. That was a major improvement. My life is so much better without her.

Pathological lying always brings me back to the New Age thought of “the secret“. After I heard about the concept of “living and believing in what you want and you can manifest it into reality” always brought me to think of people that were pathological liars or who have other mental illnesses that brings them to believe something that wasn’t true or not reality based. If this manifestation concept that some spiritual gurus and such push was something that could truly happen, wouldn’t all those lies and crazy thoughts actually come to be under that concept of believe it true, live as it’s true, and it will actually come to be true?

How common is pathological lying without other dark triad traits? My ex was a pathological liar but also very destructive. That I only figured out after the damage was done. I mean, the fact she also had sadistic motives. It took me three years to figure out and the full exctent of the lying. In the beginning I thought it was harmless little lies, and tried figure out "why" and also tried to help her instead of just leave the relarionship directly which would've been the wiser thing to do.

Apart from HIGHLY manipulative behavior, I don't see a big amount of narcissism in this case. Dr. Grande even said that she was diagnosed with BPD. She said herself that she's ill and that she needs help, something that is not very common among narcissists. I think this is more a case of how extensive lying can become a habit which, the longer it's being done, the more difficult it is to discard. The question to ask here would be, wether the lying occures out of habit or with a specific goal in mind. Sometimes I think that the label of narcissisim is thrown around to easily to judge people that show undesirable behavior.

This was a remarkable case, or series of cases. So many questions about her family and upbringing. Also the stealing children gave me chills. Didn't the parents check references? More questions on that too. It seems people really need to be protected from someone like this, but how is the problem right now it seems. I knew a person who was a pathological liar, and it was causing him quite a bit of emotional anguish. His lies were quite transparent, and always grandiose in nature, he was meeting politicians, members of government secret services, other notable people, receiving awards and commendations, as well as reporting just how smart and otherwise awesome he was. He wasn't getting much out of his stories, and i always felt quite a bit of pity towards him. I knew that he understood what he was doing and that he also understood how it made him look like to other people around him.

My mother was a pathological liar. From experience I can tell you that dealing with her was a nightmare. She was the authority figure and she had an extremely bad temper. From early on we were expected to support her in her lies. That's a terrible thing to do to a child because it tells them that reality isn't important, that it is merely a tool to manipulate others with so that you get what you want. Here's an example: When I was 13 and my sister 11 my mother had a new boyfriend who called around 4:00 every day. When he called one day she had us lie to him and tell him that she had hit her head on the side of the pool and was unconscious. He rushed over and made a big fuss over her. He seemed to like us for an hour or two also. My sister and I got shipped off to my uncle's care not long after that so that they could have a nice honeymoon. Our culture seems to promote, to put it mildly, an "alternate reality" as being as valid as the actual reality. These days when I see, for instance, that a biological male can step forward and claim to be a female and that if we don't go along with that we're considered to be bad people I think it's a lot like my nightmare world as a child. We are expected to go along with the craziness - or else. I didn't have any choice as a child except to go along with the lies but I have a choice now. I don't go along with it. I try always to be polite and never confrontational. But, I do speak up.

I knew a girl, growing-up who seemed to get stuck at middle- school age. Years later, we reconnected and it was shocking just how much she seemed to still be frozen in that stage. As I got to know her again, I learned more and more about her childhood. I never asked if she was abused, but I don't think she was, at least not physically and/or sexully. She did say however that her father often made sexual remarks about her 12 and 13 year old friends and that her mother, who was a surgeon and who had coerced the father into going through med-school to become a podiatrist, had put a lot of pressure on her to succeed.

Years ago, during Grad school, I worked at a book store. A regular customer would come in and talk to everyone working there about her life. Another bookseller befriended this woman and they would occasionally go to a movie or to dinner. The regular customers paid with a credit card that had her name on it, which we verified with her drivers’ license…same name. The woman claimed to be the wife of a surgeon in a renowned local hospital. She said they were trying to adopt a baby…she told us about her vacations.,..her house…her husband’s career…At first no one thought much about it. When she claimed to have adopted a baby, I thought it was weird that no one ever saw the baby. Long story short- she was obsessed with the doctor whom she claimed to be married to. His actual wife had restraining orders against her, and everything she had relayed to anyone who would listen was a complete fabrication. Her credit cards were verified with a fake license (easier in those days) and she used the doctor’s address as her own. It wasn’t that she was pretending to be the woman who was actually the doctor’s wife. She used her own first name and made herself a character in a lie, using this man and his family as characters. It was scary, but so sad. I knew this woman had something wrong with her, but I had no idea what it was.

Dr. Grande, my mother has been a pathological, liar, my whole life. I'm so glad you're talking about this. My eyes and ears were glued to the television because I've been looking this up and me and my aunt have been trying to figure out why she does this for years. Initially everybody believes her because it's not like she sees spaceships or anything like that., it's things like, of course you know I met this celebrity, or I beat cancer several times, or when her and my dad got divorced, she was telling the whole family that he was a drug addict, which was not true, everybody just has realized that she is a pathological liar, and we just listen, but we know everything she says isn't true. We just don't understand why she does this because she is a genius. An absolute genius, but every time she opens her mouth we know it's a lie. No one in our family friends. No one believes anything she says even if it's true now no one. And no one can figure out why she does this. And I sad thing is if something really bad did happen to her. No one would believe her and that's a bad thing. I don't even speak to her. I haven't spoken to her in three or four years because I can't stand the lies anymore. I don't like to be lied to. I don't like to hear lies, and she has told some whoppers of a lie that it has torn our family to pieces and I'm just done. I think she has maybe one or two people in her life left and that's pretty sad. Anyway, thank you for talking about that. I really do wish you were my therapist. I really do. I started out life with a "compulsive liar." (My brother Charlie & I are 18 months apart in age.) It was horrible! I can't count the times I would have someone angrily approach me about the (often unnecessary) lies Charlie told them, sometimes after swindling them but typically after he broke their trust. It has negatively affected our siblings, leaving us each with blemished reputations (guilt by association). My ex-husband has been diagnosed with ASPD & NPD; turns out I married someone with whom I was quite familiar. (Ohhh . . . the traumatized mind, a gift that keeps on giving.)

Sometimes it can become a habit. When I was younger, I was terrified of my mom; if I broke something for example, I would lie because I didn’t want to get physically abused. I ended up lying constantly because it had become a habit; almost reflexive. Like I would do it without consciously thinking about it. Took me forever to break the habit

B.A. in Psychology here-the wheels were turning in my head the whole time, too. I’m not getting Borderline or schizophrenia here, either. I’ve personally known at least a couple of people with both and they’re nothing like that. Borderline is usually very back-and-forth with a change of moods and mind many times throughout the hours and days. Plus easy to anger. Doesn’t fit Samantha at all from what I’m hearing. Schizophrenics’ delusions and hallucinations are usually on a consistent basis and it’s often to the point where they can hardly even keep anything together. Definitely not Samantha, either. My first thought was maybe some form of fictitious disorder out of a morbid desperation to live out a part of her life she feels is unlived-namely, her teen years. But, also, guess who else commits fraud as their #1 crime and often spins really wild tales to turn on the charm and play on people’s sympathy? And lies even when it’s not necessary? Psychopaths.

Had a female neighbour once who had a non existent boyfriend. She was very plausible, but after a while the penny dropped that I had never ever seen him, let alone met him. She told us the car he drove and that he always parked across the street. Turns out the car belonged to a houseowner who lived across the street. No matter when I said I'd like to meet him, she always had some excuse. My doubts were confirmed when I met somebody from her own town who said she was well known for making up stories. The girl was highly intelligent and went on to excel in her field and now owns a very successful practice and she is married wirh children. And my question is why on earth did she feel the need to invent stories and is she still doing it today, to her husband,children, colleagues and clients?

Funny story about your neighbour, and I assume she wanted other people, including other women to think she was highly desireable ? Either that or she was very careful about her security, and wanted other people to believe she had a man with her. I know my neighbour who is a woman, left a large pair of mens work boots out on her front steps, to scare away would be intruders -- at least in her mind. Not a bad idea really .
