As a landlord myself, I am not understanding why other landlords are hesitant to accept the vouchers. My husband and I rent to housing authority/ section 8 clients only in one of our units. It’s guaranteed rent whereas someone without the assistance can call you and say “I don’t have your money this month”. The tenants have for the most part been really good people. This is heartbreaking 💔
@Blah-blah-sure2 жыл бұрын
Then you’re 1 of the billions that got lucky. The sales pitch is that you’re guaranteed the rent. The problem stems from the tenants that wreck the place, move others in, refuse to pay their measly part. Are on drugs And deliberately break things then sec8 does their inspection and if you don’t make the repairs in their time frame u don’t get paid. Then it’s repeated again.

@@thesilentone4024 It’s unfortunate that you rented to tenants that took advantage and weren’t appreciative of the opportunity. Section 8/rent assistance/ low income housing is meant to be a stepping stone for most, but for those that are disabled it is a Safety net. Not all tenants that are in section 8 are bad tenants. But I think those same people, regardless of being on section 8 would have done the same thing even if there was zero assistance with their rent. Bad people are just that. This happens everywhere!! This NEVER should have happened, but... in 2015, I finally left a very abusive, toxic human. I took our two kids with me, OFC! It was OK because we got into a shelter. We weren't there a full 24 hours when my oldest, a Monkey King Child, fell from the shelter bunk and broke his jaw, three places, very bad. I was nursing my daughter, so I had to pop her off the ta and run to him. Anyhow, after the 10 day stay in the hospital, with a 2 yr old, who fully was ready to tear up life again after day 2.. and an 8 month old, nursing baby.. We had no where to go, we went back to the shelter and I was told they moved us out, we're a liability. Too tired to fight about it. We went to another shelter, thankfully it was quick entry, as it was technically an emergency, no car 2 little kids, only two arms and every "man" for himself.. Any way, They said they needed more room for actual emergency cases and I wasn't willing to say I was disabled or unable to work, so they asked us to move on. I could have easily lied and we'd been fine, but obviously that's not OK. So after moving around, literally here and there, anywhere, we found Family Promise and we were able to actually stay until we got stable, we had to be out the door at 7am and the company would move our stuff, every Sunday, to a new location and transport us yo the "day center" no beds, so no rest... Weeds out the one who are willing to come up...., at that time I had bought a beater with a heater, first investment!! I had to break some rules to get and keep a job, but I did.. I did bartending for two months, saved every penny! An older guy came to the shelter to serve the families meal, (mandatory attendance, even if you have a job) He was a scientist at the biggest company in the next town, He put in an excellent word for me and I got the job!! That means exiting the program. So I found a place, got help with first and last. I put in my 2 weeks, worked 10 days straight over the winter break,everyone was gone and work was my escape, I happily obliged.. My last day there was a Saturday, I moved into our home on Sunday and my new, very structured job Started that Monday morning. Thankfully I had the kids in daycare.. Sorry, I needed to let this out... It's 2022 and I never did get accepted for a voucher. We were homeless for a total of 10 months. The struggles I didn't talk about here are many!!!!! It was so crazy. We made it through, we're still paycheck to paycheck, but life is good and God is amazing! I also had a very horrible custody battle directly after my son broke his job. Mom: homeless, jobless, car less... dad: kept the house and the car and the resources. I fought with truth and won!! He left and still hasn't contacted. No support from him, but one time, ever. I am struggling to forgive fully.

My Dad never rented to anyone who had a filthy car full of trash - because he knew in 6 months that's how his property would look. Also, he required first months rent, last month's rent plus a deposit. That usually kept the scrubs away. He also had it written into the lease that for each additional person who "moves in after the fact" the rent went up $150. The tenants were actually glad to have that clause because when their freeloader friends & family asked to "stay awhile" they could tell them They couldn't allow that because their rent would go up.

Sec 8 - really helped me. I was able to keep a roof over my son's head. I was able to work and go to school. I had Sec 8 from 19 yrs old though 27 yrs old. I enjoyed working but some jobs paid too little to consistently afford rent. So I would work 2 P.T. jobs or 1 FT job and go to school. So I was grateful. Also being a young teen parent my hardship was the daycares weren't open on wknds or evenings so it was hard for me to work and go to school. My son was in daycare during the week and I would have to depend on others on wknds and or after daycare hours. In Denver they couldn't miss more than 3 days of daycare per year to get daycare assistance. I never got the cash just daycare and food stamps but once you made over 8$ per hour it could only be daycare and medical, Sec8 is separate. Being in healthcare I landed a job at KP- and worked there 13 yrs but there is no KP in the state I moved to. I did not finish college due to not being able to depend on people - I was told just work- but luckily after high school while still living at home I obtained a medical assistant certificate. My point of telling my business lol is that some one out there will not give up and wait to have more kids. My boys are 10 yrs apart-due to being a teen parent. Some LLstill have/had to pay for the property & other expenses for tenants to live for free for some now going on 2 yrs. And more Landlords than u know lost their properties b/c of this. People with Section 8 vouchers don't even know that whenever your name comes up on the list and it's your chance to receive your voucher, if you cannot find someone to accept your voucher, you have the right to have your voucher ported out to another jurisdiction within your state, so you can find housing. I first received my voucher in a small town where a very popular college is located and actually almost lost my voucher due to not being able to find housing within the designated time frame because almost every landlord only wanted to rent to college students. It is considered as discrimination to only want to rent a property to a certain class of people, therefore after I wrote the housing authority manager a letter requesting to have my voucher ported out to the specific county within my state that doesnt contain a college and is more suitable to my living circumstances ie; school location, child's daycare, etc, my request had been granted and I was given yet another 60 days to find housing. Don't give up people. Know your rights and stand firm on them. Good luck to all in need!!!

I was homeless with my son for 5 yrs, sleeping in hotels, considered letting him sleep at my sisters overnight while I went to sleep outside somewhere, mind you guys I’ve always been a hard worker, and wasn’t sexually active until I was well off into my 20s. Thought I found a good guy to settle with and he was comfortable doing the bare minimum and also cheating on me while I was maintaining everything I had before I met him. Got pregnant our child is autistic it changed my life forever and guess what ? He didn’t stick around he went looking for a new girl to ride off of. Mean while im still trying to get my life together 5 yrs later. Im so grateful for section 8 but it’s hard to find a new place. My child’s diagnosis makes it hard for me to work even a work from home job because he makes loud sounds and needs an attendant with him to make sure he doesn’t run away or get into things. There are people out here that actually need these services not all of us are free loaders and trying to live for free. I miss working and at some point I even had a car. Now without work and my credit being low I can’t get a car, loans nothing. So I’m walking, and praying one day that I can jumpstart something for myself. I pray for anyone else in a situation like mine or worse. You know those of us actually using the service like it’s supposed to be used.

As a landlord, I can tell you that section 8 vouchers are usually avoided like the plague. Yes, it's totally unfair and no one should be judged by the amount of money they make. However the simple fact is landlords always end up regretting accepting Section 8 vouchers. Nine times out of 10 the voucher recipients destroy the house, don't pay on time, make way too much noise for the neighbors, the list goes on. It actually really hurts me to turn away someone with a Section 8 voucher because I know that they might be very good tenants and very good people. Unfortunately it's too much of a Gamble and simply isn't worth the risk. You can talk til you're blue in the face about having a heart, ethics and human decency but at the end of the day none of those things pay for my damaged property or loss of income.
@bernaclischurchill44632 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, the landlords can't be blamed for not wanting to deal with the BS. Where I live the people on our block are experiencing this with two of our block tenants, and it is GOD awful. On the weekend, here lately, the music from one tenants house is so loud, and it goes on until 3 AM, so if you are trying rest up from your work week, it is impossible. Then they get a little sleep, and start up again the next day, as they did this weekend past, for a few hours, then stop and sleep the rest of the day; thus by then you are so tired when you go to work on Monday, it takes an entire week to caught up with the sleep that you have lost. I don't know what is going on over there, but it was not like that before, maybe once in awhile, but not every weekend. I have said something, although I no longer work, but none of my neighbors say anything, but I have heard them voice disapproval on many occasions. I don't know why they are silent, it baffles me. I guess they like being sleep deprived. Ms. B. Churchill

As a long-time landlord who has had Section 8 tenants, I now say no. This woman is so so so typical......young unmarried black woman with multiple fatherless children. It's probably not her fault she is where she is, but experience has shown that, since Section 8 tenants have little or no money, they can't afford to buy a vacuum cleaner, change air filters, or prevent their children from kicking in doors and setting the stove on fire. Sorry, but that's "the other side of the story".

I am now looking for a new place to move to and she is absolutely right. But the allowance they give people is not enough for the client to even get an apartment. For a 1 bedroom you are only allowed 1,091 and it goes up to 1,112 a month . But everywhere you look that will except a voucher it is way over the limit. A lot of Apartments won't take a voucher because the tenants that have a voucher will not pay their portions.
