My mom was not known for good advice, but she did raise me with one bit that was wonderful: she said, "You never want people complimenting your makeup. You want them just saying, 'Oh you look so beautiful, do you wear makeup?' " I am so grateful for it.

It's interesting how true that is. I had a funny realization when I was a teenager that when people complement something specific about how you look or what you're wearing, they may OR may not actually like it; the fact is they said it because they noticed it.

Yeah, to a point. There's natural and there's too natural. I mean, yeah, your armpit hair is natural, but shave that off. I mean... sure, you could proclaim that you want to keep it because it's natural, but if that's the only reason, I expect you to stop brushing your teeth. Tooth plaque is entirely natural.

Some people have more natural beauty than others. But something I have learned in my life is that an honest big smile and a self-confidence is always beautiful. If Emma Stone's demeanor was that of the average woman, she wouldn't be attractive. But she is positive and smiles a lot and is always moving forward. I think she is hot as hell, but I find myself wondering why. It certainly isn't the makeup or natural beauty.

I remember when I was a teenager everyone thinned their eyebrows pencil thin. I have naturally thick eyebrows - so whenever I went to get them cleaned up and waxed the woman doing it would try and pressure me to do more than a clean up. One woman said I had “man brows”. When thick brows were in and my friends had to draw and pencil in their brows since they didn’t grow back the same I would get comments for having beautiful brows. Fashion comes and goes but I think it’s more important to be comfortable in your own skin.

In my 20s, I worked retail. I've never been a morning person, but I worked a 4 am to 2 pm shift. I quit wearing makeup to work so I didn't have to get up any earlier than necessary. Then another girl started working in my department. Her makeup was flawless every morning. I made myself get up earlier just so I could wear makeup to work and feel better about myself. Many women do the same thing I did: compare myself to someone else and become self-conscious about my appearance. It isn't worth it. Wear what makes you happy.
@awkwardemily15

I don't understand how some women have all this time in the morning for full hair and makeup. I always feel like Plain Jane next to them, but I remind myself that it's just not important enough for me to wake up extremely early. Also, I'm not good with makeup. It would probably take me at least twice as long to do whatever they do. Several years ago I had a coworker who was always done up. I felt especially self conscious around her because we share the same name, have similar features like dark hair and dark eyes, and worked in the exact same area. I started working there first and then she came along and wowed everyone because she was a social butterfly (if you guessed I'm not a social butterfly you'd be correct). So not only was she prettier than me, she was more fun to be around. She also got away with a lot of things. I actually WORKED and she worked sometimes. A great example of life not being fair, but at least I have integrity.

I got a degree in fashion design... and in the process came to hate the fashion industry. The point about women doing it to ourselves is so true, it's been true throughout history, there's so much BS about corsets and stays being forced on us by men back in the day, no, no they weren't, they were trendy and PRACTICAL for hundreds of years (first "stays" then "corsets", they are different but related).
@Midoriventure
@Midoriventure 5 ай бұрын
My friend! It's a true rarity to spot someone not ignorant about corsets in the wild. So many people don't get that tightlacing was rare, risque, and fancy/luxurious, like wearing stiletto platform heels today, advised against medically and often morally, and usually for dressy occasions if at all, unless one had both the inclination and ability to incapacitate themselves all the time, which most didn't. Tightlacing wasn't even possible until the Victorian period, when women had already been wearing some form of stays for the last century or two. Always a pleasure.
@LeeLeeBellePBJLee
@LeeLeeBellePBJLee 5 ай бұрын
@@Midoriventure Right!? There are always the... odd ones... who take any trend or fad too far. In the early 2010's you'd have the kids who had a few "silly bands" then you'd have the kid who had "silly bands" all the way up their arm and their hand was turning purple... tattoos, you have folks with a few tattoos and you have the folks covered head to toe in tattoos. Corsets are GREAT for large breasted women, infinitely better than bras, which pull the shoulders forward and destroy posture. Instead of slinging the breasts from the shoulders corsets support them from below, from the core, it's so much better for the back.

They were saying how 6-8 can do this, and 9-10 can do that. Like, I don’t know how they come up with their bs arbitrary scale, but it sickens me how much they talk like that. And what’s even crazier is that I bet all of them have a different idea of attractiveness looks like, so I don’t understand why they insist on having an arbitrary scale. And besides that, it’s so disgusting how women celebs get treated when they go from being underweight to a healthy weight, and all the guys online r saying how she’s so “ugly” and “fat” now. Especially in that case men don’t actually care about a woman being healthy. But irl most of what I’ve seen is men just making fun of a woman’s butt size, mostly saying it’s “too small” thanks to the whole big booty trend. And in general just kinda picking apart the appearance of a woman, being overly critical of her hair, makeup, skin, calling her names based on her appearance. But anyway, I call absolute bs on that one guy, I have been a girl for 21 years, I’m not gonna fall for that so easily.

Everyone is trying to copy/paste other people's features and it looks completely wrong for their unique appearance. At least with makeup you can easily reverse looks. Dr. Gary Linkov just made a video talking about rhinoplasty in specific, and how everyone wants these tiny, pinched noses. But it doesn't look natural on every face type. Not to mention, with plastic surgery of that sort in specific, how you can end up compromising and degrading your facial structure trying to force a completely different feature. Which leads to multiple revision surgeries and lifelong maintenance.

Nope, they all look bad, stark, extreme contrast compared to the 100% natural woman next to you or the guy standing behind you-- if it's distracting enough I notice you did something to your brows at all, you already went too far. Relieved to see this trend die. My sister and I both have very fair hair- she went all in on the brows, I refused and told her repeatedly how awful it looked. Years later, guess who cringes looking back at photos and who doesn't? Resist trends, be timeless.

Many men do not age like fine wine...they just think they do and women care less about age and are more open to accept a partner that has no hair anymore, a fat belly, face liek leather and sagging skin. Most Men only want young women and an older woman, no matter how well she aged, are per se unacceptable. There are also women who age very very well. But men still do not want them. It is unfair biology. Men are wired to always want young women (even if they have no plans for children) while women live longer than men. Shitty deal for women, they are considered "old" after 30, so they spend literally > 50 years of their life being "old" in the eyes of most men.

I was too poor for the trends of my time so i wore exclusively what i wanted rather than what was cool. There was plenty of cringe, yes but i regret none of it because i loved all of it. Your last paragraph, yes!! As a lifelong no beauty products woman, I have gotten called every "pick-me" name variant in the book for trying to tell my fellow ladies to just go natural. I will never understand how it is an insult to women to tell them they don't need make up because they're beautiful without it. The rebuttal is always "wow you just told me you hate my make up", like GIRL YES WE DO IT IS COVERING UP YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY YOU DON'T NEED IT. And just saying, if make up and cosmetic surgery disappeared tomorrow, a lot of us would go up several attractiveness points since we'd no longer have to compete with exaggerated unnatural beauty. Women just need to listen to men when they say that they don't want this extra stuff. I've gotten plenty of male attention with a completely natural face, and I'd argue I probably get more because of it.

People (especially women) don’t want friends, they want enablers. I remember expressing concern over a friend back in the day who was engaging in hookups, I was looked at like a sexist just because I called out the behaviour and wanted to dig into why they were engaging in that and offer support. (It also wasn’t making them happy, but miserable and bitter towards men). I was 210lbs and women (including family) would tell me “you’re beautiful and healthy” I was not. I yearned for someone to say “girl, you need to get it together, this isn’t good for you.” I didn’t find that person irl, but I found it through people like Brett and Candace, I’m now 174lbs and over halfway to my goal :) but yes, to get back to your question, most modern women only want enabler friends… nothing else.

I was so self-conscious about my figure and he just helped me be ok with how I look, bc I look healthier now and I’m happy 🥰

I’m 43. When I was 16, my dad told me never ever ever touch my eyebrows. Don’t pluck them don’t color them just LEAVE THEM ALONE. They are perfect as they are. I was like ooooookay 👀 fast forward to the last ten to fifteen years and I finally understood why he gave me this advice lol

There's a bunch of 90's and early 00's nostalgia-based creators who make "what we all wore" content shorts saying things like, "Why did we all wear this?!" And I definitely recognize the trends because I was AROUND them at the time. But I always wanna come in like, "Nah, this is what the 'cool kids' wore, and you guys made fun of those of us who didn't."

I have thick, black eyebrows. I do pluck the wild ones to keep them neat. I did get them waxed once. Never again. I looked like I stuck my wet finger into the electrical socket. 😳 My eyes are already big. My face doesn't look good with thin brows. I never followed their "beauty standards" or "trends" because they don't complement my face. I have full cheeks and olive complexion. I rarely even wear make-up. I just wash my face and use cocoa butter cream around my eyes and mouth. I can't wear 5 lbs. of make-up. I'd feel like I was smothering. My skin would be.

This is totally reminding me of one time when I had to get false lashes for a play I was in. I was worried it looked weird and walked into my parent’s room to get their opinion. My dad didn’t notice that I had anything on my eye. I only had one set of lashes on…

We do often forget to just be ourselves amidst the transient beauty trends, which really don't define us.

"Your brows look best naturally" *cries in natural redhead with invisible eyebrows* trust me, girl, invisible brows are ALMOST as bad as overdone brows 😅

Blonde brows 2… just get a defined brush and light powder them in (only 1 or maaaaybe 2 shades darker) ❤ it’s cheap and non permanent.. so if no brows becomes popular, u can not do them lol

As a millennial. I found a picture of myself in the 7th grade looking through my recently deceased mothers picture book. And my friend, I was definitely responsible for my own brow blindness. Ladies, if I can give you any advice whatsoever. Just clean up your brows, don’t over pluck. Less is more!

I brush my brows to put errant hairs back in place. When I do make up I keep them in place with clear mascara.

This is why getting mad at your man for not noticing your haircut is just stupid. They don't see it. They don't care. They notice if you are unhappy or happy, but don't care about the frou frou parts.

I hate how self expression has become such a horrible thing. I dye my hair, and I’m not LGBT. Why has life gotten so messed up?
