The boy stood on the burning deck..... Just goes to show that you can have all these new fangled 3D doodads, but, you can also have traditional tried and true methods that have worked for years and still do. Good on you for showing that, when the situation presents itself, traditional can be best.

I just use the best tool for the job.. 3D has it uses but as you say there are still older techniques that work very well even in this digital age.

Thanks Mark… yes once you have had wood on your deck there is no going back to painted plastic.
@ThreenaddiesRexMegistus6 ай бұрын
That’s an ancient kit! I remember the Victory which used the same brown plastic and had vac-formed sails. Wood filament is pretty good at jamming 3D printers and destroying the print plate. Great job pushing through it and sometimes wood is ideal for creating wood. 👍🏻

Thanks for watching and yes wood effects look better if you use real wood.

Great work, your ability to add those indevigal planks is amazing, I have trouble painting 28mms napoleonic figures. C u next time

Extra strong 3x prescription reading glasses and a lot of quick editing of the footage. But once you get into the rhythm of the planking is becomes a lot faster and easier.

Best result in the end by far I'd say. But experimenting is how you find out stuff isn't it. Great vid we'll done.

Thanks Dave. Yes I sometimes go around in circles trying new methods. They don’t always work, but that is how I have developed many of my unique ways to do modelling.

You’re brilliant, Harry. Getting the camber on that printed deck section is very nifty. I assume the CAD program lets you specify how much of a curve you need in the piece? If I see this kit in the wild at a decent price, I’ll grab it. The finished model will be worth the extra detailing work that needs to be put into it. Why doesn’t Airfix re-release this kit in its new and better plastic? 😊
@HarryHoudiniModels6 ай бұрын
Yes the CAD software allow you to make an end profile of the camber then extrude that through the part. What I had to do then was reverse the top view setting the curves of the deck edges to remove the unwanted outside extrusion from the camber. Took some 3D chess type thinking to work it out.

Wooden Ships and Iron Men, but in this case Hybrid Ships and Photo etch (?) men . Amazing work.

No photo etch on this build Michael… but yes I hid some 3D printed parts in the ship.

Surprisingly I had the kit out yesterday and plan to complete that build very soon. John’s generous donation to encourage me to build the Prince has thrown my planned build schedule out a bit, but I will get back on track soon.

Masterful video, full of great examples and pointers. This will be another museum quality build. Would a small enclosure, with a dehumidifier for the printer help with the humidity? Thank you, cheers mate.
@HarryHoudiniModels6 ай бұрын
I do have humidifiers for the reels of PLA, so they dry out before printing. However due to the design of my Elegoo Neptune 4 the filament is exposed to the air for about a foot from the dryer to the print head. Plus the build is open to the air. I now have an enclosure for the 3D printer but after burning out a second hot end with wood catching fire I haven’t fixed the printer or tried out the enclosure yet. This 3D printing has a lot of quirks and jerks to get your head around.

Thank you. As you said a complicated process to unravel. I am certain you will prevail. Cheers mate.

Nice job sir. I mess about a bit with cars and the like. Do have a few ships in the loft including two Airfix HMS Victory kits so I can do a proper job on it. Well, as good as my meagre skills allow. Love what you're doing here but do keep the grand prix car model close at hand, I'm most interested to see what you do with that.

Nice work; painstaking is the word that comes to mind. Do you know, or does anyone know, how Airfix made the moulds and dyes that are used to make the parts?
@HarryHoudiniModels6 ай бұрын
I was long ago and probably done with clay models and cast steel moulds that were then hand worked to get the details.
