I had a piece of Black Walnut with barbed wire in the Heartwood. You just never know what you are going to find in a piece of wood. Happy turning my friend😊

I bet that was pretty tough getting that barbed wire out 😣 Ya sure don’t, surprises are awaiting, would be nice to find some kinda treasure in it instead of nails and stuff 😄 Happy turning to you too and Merry Christmas 🎄

The grain and figure are fantastic! Odd finds buried in yard tree trunks are notorious! A fellow turner I know found an old doll's head buried in a sycamore trunk. The wood had grown all around it. My chainsaw has found several nails and a couple screws.
@kimseyjustkimsey525611 ай бұрын
Howdy Dave! Ohmygoodness a dolls head would be pretty creepy to find 😵💫😄 Once some years ago I hit nail in the rim of a bowl, hit just right and I was able to leave it in the rim as a peace of character, my chainsaw has been hitting some obstacles to its cutting out of square pretty good 😄 Think 🤔 I need a new chain, Have a good one buddy 🤝

The color and character markings are great in all of those, Kimsey! I've never seen anything quite like that. I bet they are going to be stunning once finished. You and your family have a great Christmas and we'll see you soon! 😊 Phil

Thanks Phil!😊 they are drying pretty good maybe I’ll get a finish on em sooner than expected, it’s been super cold and I got propane heater and firewood both going and it’s pulling the humidity out of em pretty well I took em out of the shavings and set em on a shelf to dry still got my fingers crossed 🤞 though Lol, Merry Christmas to you too buddy! 🎄🤝

I get timber from a fellow who works for the council so I get a lot of white beam and Swedish white-beam that usually comes out of parks. I’m always finding nails in it. The young ones hammer them half way in to help them climb the trees. Not good news for the old bowl gauge…….. great work👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hi 👋, Kimsey , great looking 👀 bowls, it is a pity that you couldn’t coring them out, but they are quite expensive, you could end up with 2 or 3 Bowls, as a set, and then stack them inside each other with a gap, and then dry them out very slowly, good luck, great job, stay safe, I wish you all the best for the future, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, Phil
@kimseyjustkimsey525611 ай бұрын
Howdy Phil! Thanks I appreciate it, I should have cored them out I agree, don’t know what i was thinking, They are drying pretty good so far and still keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 😄 I bought them into the house after they were in those shavings a few days ago, I have a drying shelf and I have some heaters going it’s been really cold lately and the heaters are pulling the humidity out pretty fast, I’m flipping them over every day, Take care buddy Merry Christmas 🎄 to you too and Happy New Year! 🎊🎆

Reckon someone nailed some wire fence to that tree when it was young, gotta admit i was a tad worried those cracks was going to pop but you was definitely in charge. Look forward to seeing the time when they are dry enough for a finish, we reckon there's going to be some faces in that grain. Enjoyed the walk through the wood did you come back with a log on your shoulder. Wishing you all the best for 25th December and 2024. All the best from Lincolnshire UK

@garyp8471 Howdy Gary, Thanks! I had shown that wire stuff to my wife sometime later and she said it looked like clothes line maybe, that nail and stuff was pretty rough on my chisel 😣 One of those I showed towards the end reminded me of a face looking back out of the center bottom of the bowl, I could see a eye and a nose maybe some more in there, pretty neat what can be seen in the grain sometimes, Hopefully they will get dried out pretty soon so I can get em finished up, so far they are drying good but still got my fingers crossed 🤞 Lol , didn’t come out of there with anything on that walk probably get into big trouble in that area that was a National Forest park 😄 Glad you enjoyed the walk though, Wish you the best to buddy🤝 Merry Christmas 🎄 and a Happy New Year! 🎊🎆

Hi Kimsey good to see you having so much fun! I love the figure on these bowls - we don't get so much of this wood in the UK. Do you think thae nail gave the bowl some of it's black markings? They all turned out really good - anyways - hope you're enjoying the festivities and keeping well - all the best, and look forward to the next one!
@kimseyjustkimsey525611 ай бұрын
Howdy Paul! Just where the nail is and maybe some of the black runs outward a little maybe because the nail is rusting it’s making a darker color just around the perimeter of the nail and bleeds through a little bit sometimes , my dad saws on the mill and if there’s a really dark color almost black, sometimes you can find a nail before you get into it on the sawmill as you’re sawing some boards and, there are quite a bit of black walnut trees around here, my father-in-law just suffered a broken windshield from a black walnut he was just driving down his driveway one hit his front windshield 😣 There’s quite a few down the road I live on im always keeping my fingers crossed that i don’t have the same thing happening to me 😄 They are just a little bigger than a golf ball and really hard textured when they are falling from the trees when they are ripening, mowing the lawn around them is pretty rough, where i grew up there were a couple trees there to, there pretty good eaten but hard to crack open, Take care buddy Merry Christmas!🎄

Wow Kinsey those are some fantastic bowls. What was your starting speed on this one? The grain on this one is beautiful. One never knows the history of a piece of wood. No telling when that nail was put in that tree. Hope it didn’t damage your gouge to bad.
@kimseyjustkimsey525611 ай бұрын
Howdy Zetus, I have no idea of the speed neither of the lathes I have have a readout display, I just speed it up to the speed that feels right and safe to turn at, if anyone ever gets ahold of any wood to turn around the house I grew up in their in for a treat I was always hammering nails in trees building forts up in those woods 😄 that walnut tree was most definitely around someone’s house there’s probably more yet to get into Lol keeping my fingers crossed I don’t hit anymore of them 😄 It dulled the gouge pretty good 😵💫😄 Merry Christmas Buddy 🎄

Nice work sir. I tend to look for the ugliest chunk of wood that I can find to turn and am always thrilled when I open it up. Will you turn them again when they are fully dry? How often do you wet them down? And why the soap?
@kimseyjustkimsey52569 ай бұрын
Thanks Ray I appreciate it, it is definitely fun to work with something ugly to see what it can be transformed into, want be turning them again, they are fully dry already, I’ve had them in the house on a shelf with wood heat and propane heater going, with fans going circulating the air, we had some super cold weather, the heat pulled the moisture out of them quicker than I expected, I have a new video up I just posted Monday I think it was talking about them and showing the moisture content, I just spayed them with water to reveal the color since they were too wet to put a finish on, The soapy water treatment was told to me from a man some years ago, he has passed away now but he told me it was supposedly supposed to help prevent cracking as the wood dries after a treatment of it, I’ve had pretty good luck with it, so I’ve kept doing it, good luck out ways the bad luck in my experience. I’m currently working on a video sanding and fixing some cracks and completely finishing all the bowls so hopefully 🤞 I’ll have that finished in another week, Take care buddy 🤝
