I'm always interested to see what bullet performance is all about with a given type/configuration and velocity combination and appreciate you taking the time to show us that. Man alive Chuck you can shoot lights out. The ole 243 is a outstanding round and the Varmageddon rounds do a real number on them. I recently bought a 6.5 Creedmoor due to the surgeon removing 18s" of my colon because of very painful diverticulitis. I still have extreme pain and weakness from the diverticulitis that remains. I wanted something light shooting I should have went with the 243 Win.

@kentuckywindage222
@kentuckywindage222 3 жыл бұрын
@@patrickgriffitt6551 The 25-06 is an excellent caliber. Just a little more recoil than .243. Bullet selection from 53 to 100 plus in different designs and ease of finding ammo is among the reasons I went from 25-06 to .243. That and being banged up and trying to avoid as much recoil as possible. However I bought a Tikka t3 lite fluted for ease of carrying. As with all thing's in life you usually sacrifice something to gain something else. 4 shots straight are tight at 100. Number 5 is just outside. I load a Sierra Gameking 85grain with 38 grains of IMR4064 in Winchester or Lapua brass with CCI primers. 3200 fps on my chronograph. I would like 3400 fps. or above. The IMR4064 load is accurate and that is most important I suppose. I think 38gr. is the max for IMR4064 with an 85gr. bullet. If anyone has a good recipe with 85 gr Gamekings I would like them to post it.

Very cool. I shot with some bench shooters at my range a few months back. Most of them had 6mm BRs and PPCs. I looked into some load data on those rounds and I think both have adequate power for any practical varmint hunting. Is your rifle a bench rifle? Or a custom hunter? Varmegeddons really are awesome in terms of consistency. The weight variance is + - .1gr from all that I have weighed.

Yes sir, they are actually pretty accurate past 400yds as well. I figured such a light fast bullet wouldn't do so well at extended distances, but I was wrong. .243 vs 6.5grendel which would be better for hunting everything from foxes to roe deer?
@ChuckinTV
@ChuckinTV 5 жыл бұрын
The 243 all day. The Grendel will carry more mass but that is unnecessary for small animals. I would go with the 243 for the flatter trajectory. From what I know, the Grendel shoots a 123gr at 2400fps for a hot load. A 243 will easily throw a 85gr at around 3100fps. This would make for much easy drop compensation inside 300yds. If we are strictly talking about Roe deer, I would take the 243 over the Creedmoor as well.

I realize that the 6.5 Creedmoor has a well earned reputation for accuracy. To some who doesn't have a rifle with that chambering, and speaking from ignorance why not a 6.5 Swede, or 260 Remington, or even the venerable old 243 Win.? What makes the 6.5 CM so special that it seems to be really gaining a following? Given the same quality of ammo of the similar calibers why 6.5 CM??
@ChuckinTV
@ChuckinTV 4 жыл бұрын
The 6.5CM has a slight performance edge on the 260 and 6.5x55. It's popularity compounded itself. It's popular simply because it is more readily available over the other two. Plus it was marketed pretty hard by Hornady. Thanks

Just out of curiosity, how does the recoil compare between the .243 and the 6.5CM? And do you have a distance cutoff where you choose the 6.5CM over the .243? I'm heading back to South Dakota again this summer for some prairie dog shooting, planning on bringing my Tikka T3x Varmints in .223 and 6.5CM and an AR. Was thinking about picking up a .243 this spring and have been wondering if it might be better than the 6.5CM if the recoil was less to make it easier to spot the misses. I use the .223 for everything up to 400 yards, and the 6.5CM for everything beyond. And I'm limited to factory ammo, I don't reload. What do you think?
@ChuckinTV
@ChuckinTV 5 жыл бұрын
I would say since you all ready have a 6.5, I would just run that for your longer range shots. It's hard for me to compare the 243 to the 6.5 in recoil because both of my rifles pack a bit of a wallop. My 243 70gr is packing 47gr of powder, where my 140gr 6.5 load is around 42gr of powder. Both rifles will throw me off target to a degree just because of the muzzle blast, not so much because of recoil. I will say my 243 is easier to spot my own shots with, but not so easy to justify buying one over my existing 6.5CM. Most factory ammo for the 243 is geared more towards deer hunting anyway. So you probably won't find good varmint rounds anyway. I'm not trying to talk you out of buying a 243, but I get more out of a 243 if I'm hand loading for it anyhow. You're 223 should be the best choice for most of your prairie dog shooting. If you are nailing 400yd shots with that I say rock on! I didn't think this comment would generate three paragraphs but I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the response. This was exactly what I was looking for. Last year, due to the wind, I found myself shooting the 6.5 much more than I planned and that was with a T3x CTR with a brake on it, so it was pretty mild but the barrel heats up pretty quickly. Last year, Tikka released a T3x Varmint in 6.5 and I picked one of those up and it is an awesome shooter but there is a noticeable difference in recoil without the brake. I guess I'll have to take them both. Looking forward to some 2019 chuck vids. Thanks again.

@ChuckinTV
@ChuckinTV 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Just wondering if you reload? I only use bullets 120-140gr in my 6.5CM. If you want some cheap bullets that'll shoot good inside 400yds, maybe try some Speer soft points. If you are looking to really stretch out the range, maybe try some ELDs or Sierra Match bullets. 6.5mm bullets can easily be just as expensive as 7mm depending on what you get. If you're buying factory ammo, I can't really point you to a good budget line.
@Josh-dp4iv
@Josh-dp4iv 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for response... I don't reload and wish I could afford to get into reloading. but I just tried the $45 for 60 rounds winchester bulk pack of 6.5 to break in my barrel. The 125gr hollow point. They believe it or not shoot an inch group at 100yrds.. I know the groups r starting to tighten up on the gun as long I keep the barrel cool. I'mma try the Sierra match king rounds that's factory. There expensive but worth it if they shoot good. That's for the videos.. I like watching someone with good marksmenship like u.. keep on Rollin the Chuck's!!
@ChuckinTV
@ChuckinTV 4 жыл бұрын
@@Josh-dp4iv I appreciate that. An inch group with factory bulk ammo out of an Axis isn't anything to sneeze at. That is exceptional accuracy. 1 inch at 100 yards will still be 4 inches at 400 yards. For most hunting situations that will do the job just fine.
