The best option should be a factory setting of being able to do that very thing. As the vehicle owner, I think it should be up to them to decide how they want the vehicle to perform. I know, we apparently aren't worthy of doing that in the opinion of the powers to be but should.

Naturally, the overreaching government and authoritarian EPA are to blame - the EPA offers incentives to automakers on their fuel economy targets if vehicles are equipped with auto start-stop, but only if the customer can't disable it. (You can also thank the FEDGOV for intrusively noisy pedestrian-alert speakers ruining the silence of electric cars.) The claimed fuel economy savings of auto start-stop is about 4-5 MPG, but it's probably much less, and the wear and tear is far greater because of the loss of oil pressure during off-cycles prior to restart, and the amount of fuel used when starting the engine is greater than when running the engine. The ideal choice would be a device that can connect to the OBD-II port that automatically issues a CAN signal to shut off auto start/stop after about 30 seconds of the vehicle running, and ideally with a pass-through that allows another OBD-II device to connect after it. Also, complain to your congressperson and tell them you will VOTE THEM OUT for shortening the life and hampering your enjoyment of your vehicle unless they do something to rein in the EPA. Then actually FOLLOW THROUGH - most incumbent politicians have a history of corruption that helps keep them there.

@@Acoustic_Theory If this is being done because the EPA is offering incentives, that tells me it's not a regulatory requirement. It's a financial incentive to the manufacturer. That's a simple fix. Simply refuse to buy them. That will outweigh the government overreach, quick, fast, and in a hurry.

I own a 2020 Ford Ranger. To disable the Auto Start Stop function all I need to do is plug a small LED night light (110 volt) into the 110-volt outlet on the rear of the center console. Note that the Auto Start Stop function is not enabled IF an electrical accessory is turned on or plugged in. This is mentioned on page 145 in 2020 Ford Ranger Owner's Manual. This should work for other Ford SUV and pickup trucks as well. This guy is trying to make money like the salespersons promoting cookware on TV. He always praises all products from different companies despites of what. What the hell?

Call me cheap but $100 is a bit expensive for this hardware. I went with the free option of unplugging the black connecter (bottom one of 3) on the box just under the steering wheel. The only downside of this is that it removes the power to the tow lights, but for a guy like me who might tow something once every 2 years, I can just plug it back in for the trip.

Surely you still need the engine running for aircon to turn the compressor? Here in Europe the manufacturers love these Start-Stop devices - I always disable it on my friend's Land Rover - we have an extra issue. We have a lot of turbo diesels and if you want a turbo to live a long time you should let it idle for 30 seconds at start-up and before shutting off the engine (called simmering) to ensure cooler oil reaches the turbo bearings. Stop-Starts don't always alklow this leading to premature turbo failure.
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 5 жыл бұрын
We call that coking the turbo here. The oil cokes up, or cooks, in the turbo from the heat. Same issue on the Eco-boost gas engines. The air conditioning does not have a compressor running, but while turned off it cuts the fan in half and still pushes cooler air. In the summer, it sucks.

The one that you plug in behind the switch is just a latching toggle-switch type electronic gate that does the same thing as shorting the wires. If you’re comfortable with your abilities you can just put a toggle switch in its place. I’d probably put an appropriately sized fuse in line too just to be safe.

Thanks for the video!! START/STOP does NOT save gas (much)!! It takes MORE fuel to start a gasoline engine than to run it for a short while. Way back when I was a teen, it took 2 minutes of fuel to restart a car. With better efficiency engines, I'm sure that time has shortened, BUT it ain't ZERO! So, there is no benefit. The engine DOES turn off in the heat, so no AC in SE La is NOT a smart move. Also, about the "powers that be"- The car is YOURS. YOU bought it. You can do what you want with it, as long as it is legal. Are you responsible for making sure that what you do will not harm the car? Yes! So, do your homework first. Starting and restarting your car puts a lot of wear and tear on your engine. This causes the need for expensive engine repair. So much for the "powers that be". 😊

@@jeffmayberry4064 That “charging sensor” acts like a trickle charger and sets parameters to when the battery gets charged by the alternator. Supposed to start charging when the battery level drops below xx and stops the charging when the battery level reaches yy. These were never in “older”vehicles as stated in this video. Older cars kept constantly charging the battery. This system is “supposed” to extend the battery life by not keeping the battery at constant charge of 100%. Instead it keeps it about 80% fully charged and may kick on when it drops below say 70%. I’ve heard this system has actually prevented batteries from functioning long term because they never get to be fully charged, like they used to in them older vehicles 🤔🤫?? That being said, I do believe it’s there to keep the power somewhat consistent so all those chips in your new vehicle don’t get any surges or drops to prevent hiccup in the software or hardware.. much like home computers usually are plugged into power surge protectors?? so your only objection to FORScan is that it changes the charging system? Do you know how? Will the alternator still produce at least 13.8 volts with rated amperage after a big draw (e.g. cold engine start)? That seems to be a minor change to dump the ASS mode which may result in coking a turbocharger bearing, which is much more significant. e.g ... hauling a load in the bed or even just spirited operation will raise the exhaust temperature to such that a sudden loss of oil pressure will result in the stagnant oil to "coke" (sp?) on the bearing ... reduced life ... replacing a turbocharger because of ASS Mode. I have a '17 F150 XLT 2.7 V6 ... TWO turbochargers (I'm still not sure how that works, one will ALWAYS have higher pressure than the other, but whatever) ... they both are powered by exhaust gas, which gets pretty hot. Especially for a little V6 trying to move that 1000# payload.. If idle exhaust gas temperature isn't allowed to "cool" the turbine bearings ... coking. That happens pretty fast, too, depending upon the oil condition. I just downloaded the FORScan app to my laptop and ordered the ELM cable. Apparently the OBD cable I have for my VW Jetta TDI doesn't ... work. IDK what the difference would be ... but there's something different about the wiring in that cable. I intend to disable ASS mode with FORScan. If the electrical system doesn't properly recharge the battery, then I'll reset it and drop $100, I suppose, on the eliminator. I've been doing the unplug deal, but it disables the trailer lights. connecting an LED plug into the trailer lights ... disables the obstruction sensors and the back-up camera. Sigh. There's an option to partially disassemble the dash and run a jumper wire in the ASS mode switch itself. That's probably the best overall for disabling that ridiculous feature, but it also means likely dash rattles, because all the plastic never reassembles the second time as well as the first on the assembly line. It's almost as if Ford knew its customers would detest this thing. If they'd made this a stand-alone system, that plug on the module serving ONLY the switch on the dash, then they could have showed the government their jury-rigged mileage numbers with ASS mode ... and, though still increasing the purchase price of the vehicle, facilitated an owner-initiated reset to something NORMAL people would accept. thanks for your video on this.
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 4 жыл бұрын
A normal OBD II cable will not work. It needs to be able to switch between modes. Ford had a smart charge system that controls the charging of the battery. You can watch it work on your dash if you want when driving. When you disable that, it is also able to be seen. I like what ford does especially when towing. I would not disable it personally.
@shaark92
@shaark92 4 жыл бұрын
@@WorkshopAddict what do you mean you like what Ford does when towing? A Chevy car guy way back, I've become a fan of Ford Trucks the last 20 years ... they DO perform well. Currently have a 2011 6.7 PSD that tows 25K# of hay/equipment regularly. But I don't know how ASS mode is relevant to THAT. I'm curious about this "smart charging" system though. How is it better than a standard regulator "opening" the armature to produce more amps/volts on a battery/electrical demand? Does this mean it actually stops charging with a "good" battery and lower relative demand (heat/a-c off, headlights off)? Rabbit chase ... sorta ... but my Jetta actually has a clutch on the alternator for this varying load purpose. yes, it had to be changed. sigh. As has been stated, if the producers of these OBD plug-ins would charge $15-$20, it'd be a "no brainer" ... the cost of the ELM cable, but with FORScan, I'm supposed to be able to change many settings ... fog lights, door unlock, seat belt warning, to name a couple ... but $100 per feature, that's kinda steep. I'll report back. Thanks for your reply.

I heard another way is I guess when you pull a trailer the auto shut off wont happen so to trick the system to think your towing a trailer is to get a trailer light tester ( like $4) and plug it in where you would plug in your trailer lights. Would like to know if this actually works

It will work, but it also disables other things. Even your backup camera won't work. Spend a few bucks and get the Eliminator. That way if you decide you want the start/stop to work, you just push the dash button to enable it. The device remembers whether you had the system on or off when you last shut the car down, and keeps that setting on the next startups until you change it with the switch. It doesn't affect any other systems, unlike all the so-called "free" solutions.

I noticed the voltage on your truck was first at 12.5 then 14.5. Was the 12.5 when the truck not running and th e14.5 a running voltage? You should do a video about FORD's BMS Battery Monitor System. Generally a battery would be fully charged state at 12.6 volts... 2.1 volts per cell, but with Fords BMS it prohibits the battery from accepting a ''full charge''. It's a weird concept to wrap your head around.

if using the FORScan software to disable the autolock feature for the doors, does this also alter the battery management system? I have a 2020 f150 which doesn't have the AutoLock checkbox under the advanced settings menu. This feature is bad for the battery, bad for the starter and bad for the engine ($$$$). And it's utterly unnerving. I hate it. It's a battery eater and the proof of it is that start/stop is automatically put to off when outside temperature is 4 celsius or less. Finally it does no good for environment as replacing these parts has its ecological print, far exceeding the negligible fuel economy. (Except for certain exceptionnal situations like a big trafic jam or waiting in line at the car wash.) I think it will be withdrawn some day, or at least disabling it become permanent until you put it on again.
