Biotoxin.com - information on mold toxicity and what to do about it.
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson speaks with Dr. Scott McMahon and Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker. They discuss their potentially groundbreaking research into CIRS, or Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. Backed by research, these two doctors believe that many other illnesses and syndromes such as fibromyalgia, obesity, and even depression might actually be caused by mutations in common mold as a response to our own efforts to live in a hypoallergenic world.
Scott W. McMahon, MD, founder of Whole World Healthcare has been practicing pediatrics in Roswell, New Mexico, for 26 years. His interest in Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) began in 2009. Dr. McMahon first learned about CIRS after being approached by a businessman whose daughter became ill while attending a local school. The search for this child’s healing led him to Dr. Richie Shoemaker, the global expert on mold illnesses. McMahon visited Dr. Shoemaker’s practice to learn about the treatment for CIRS and saw the tremendous need for more physicians prepared to treat CIRS. He immediately opened a practice in Roswell specifically to diagnose and treat patients with CIRS, starting with 15 patients from the local school. His CIRS practice has now grown and he has seen thousands of adults and children to date.

I got black mold poisoning when I moved back in with my parents before I got married. I was so sick. had allergies I never had before, a cough that wouldn’t stop. This went on for almost a year, countless test and scans. It was a Intern that finally asked about black mold, we found it the guest-room I was living in. That was 14years ago and I still struggle with respiratory issues. Allergy shots help a lot, but Mold is no joke.

This is a genetic defect that has likely been around for billions of years; meaning, it's part and parcel of an ongoing biological war between organisms (in this case, humans and bacteria/fungi), so the potential for triggering CIRS is always there. It just so happens that the modern construction (perhaps also agricultural) practices have made it much more of a catastrophe than it could be.

THANK GOD and Thank you Dr. Peterson for bringing this topic into the public forum! After 3 rounds of cancer, over 100 outbreaks of shingles and a host of other symptoms, I found out I had CIRS due to mold in my house. After 3 failed remediations, we left our home and possessions and moved to a home we tested thoroughly before buying. After three years with a low and slow method of ridding my body of toxins, I feel better than I have in 13 years. I'm 62 and hiking every day and always busy. This is a hidden and deadly syndrome that must be taken seriously. If you read this comment, don't let any doctor convince you otherwise. Find a mold literate doctor and persevere. This can be overcome if you have the right knowledge.

I lost almost 10 years of my life to mold poisoning. I was misdiagnosed with mental disorders and over medicated, which prevented me from being able to work or care for myself. I lost my job and my house got repossessed as a result of the medications and was left homeless at the start of the pandemic. Eventually I found the right doctors and after 3 months of binders and hot salt baths I was 70% recovered. Even after healing from all my symptoms my "normal" doctors gaslit me and said there's no such thing as mold poisoning!

If you are one of these people that cannot detox the mold naturally, then you need to take a binder to remove them.

@@my_channel_44 They’re used to remove the mycotoxins. The CIRS protocol calls for either Cholestyramine or Welchol and some docs (like Andrew Heyman) use an okra & beet powder and/or fruit pectin for patients who can’t tolerate the drugs and/or want to go a more natural route. Okra & beets apparently work exactly like Cholestyramine does in the body, just at a lesser potency and with way less side effects.

I work in home repair and remodeling on the Atlantic coast of NC. After hurricanes I see all kinds of water damage and 100% of the water damage that isn't dried out within a few hours, not days but hours, grows huge amounts of mold. If you do nothing you get giant colonies of mold behind your walls, in your attic, under your flooring. Even after everything dries out the mold is still there in its dormant stage just waiting for the next event. If your house had a major flood like a roof leak, make sure you rip out all of the drywall & remove all carpet and pad, remove everything as far as the water damage goes, clean everything with mild bleach and water, spray with antimicrobial spray, use fans and dehumidifiers to dry....If you don't your house will be sick and it will continue to spread. All houses have some mold, even new ones. I'm sure its possible that there was a house built in the dessert somewhere in which it never rained during construction & never had a leak maybe but it would be rare. Id say, If your worried about black mold toxins in the air, use a A/C filter that removes mold spores, get several air purifier for your house, dust and mop often, and open your windows to air out the toxins.

My family - husband and children lived in a mold infested place for 3 years without knowing it… I went from being an active mom/working mom to being bedridden at 33 years old. After discovering the mold - I knew right away what was wrong .. I immediately started researching for answers…. In 2004 - 20 years ago I found Dr. Shoemaker.. we lived in the PNW, he was in Maryland .. I called his office and he agreed to see our whole family. I still don’t how we found the financial resources to get to Maryland but we did. He spent an entire day with just our family - I am forever thankful for the difference Dr. Shoemaker made in our lives. We learned myself and one of my children had the gene that has us be way more susceptible to mold. 20 years later we are still living with the consequences of the biotoxin exposure - and we are living miracles. And 20 years later I can still tell within a minute if a building/home is mold infested - I still react. Thank you for doing this interview …. We built our home about 10 years ago. Slab home. We put vinyl planking flooring in about 5 years ago. I started getting sick a couple years ago and very sick within the last year. I started going almost insane. Felt like I was being bit by bugs, so tired, my body started doing crazy things. Don’t know what drove me to rip up one of the planks but I did, and found mold under my entire home! Just moisture coming from the concrete. I developed Morgellons which I had never even heard of before and wish I never had. We removed it now and put down epoxy now, so no more porous material! I have made slight improvements healthwise but still have a long way to go. I had a thriving career in real estate but have cut way back because I can’t handle too much. My nervous system and memory is wrecked and I don’t like to be around people anymore. I know I developed a fungal infection but have been gaslit by medical system and they make me look I’m crazy. My son was very young and in Kindergarten started having seizures, all over body paid, GERD etc. we finally had it professionally tested and found black mold and other toxic molds. The techs told me they had to report it to the Health Department and I would need to remove my son from the home. He was 12 at the time. So all those years he was exposed to toxic molds for all his life. Now he’s 27 has allergies, GERD, Fibromyalgia, POTS and anxiety and is on SS as a result. This is no joke, and if he has another exposure to mold it will be worse for him. Watch out for mold and also if any of you are using cannabis for pain and inflammation, there can be mold in it.

I put in plastic humidity barrier without covering it for a while. The humidity behind it would build up to very high levels causing mold on the wood structure. OMG I am so grateful for this information. I'm a designer, home builder and wellness consultant passionate about addressing the home environment as a part of health, especially during treatment for disease. I always sensed that the building materials we use are more toxic especially when they break down with mold. This is the smoking gun!!! I have studied extensively natural building and have lived in mud structures in Guatemala and bamboo in Costa rica. Never did I experience any mold in the structures, they're natural!! Our current building materials are generally toxic on their own, add moisture and make extra toxic mold!!! With the modern human so sick these days I am convinced that environment is a huge part of our health. Thank you for covering this.

After a while, you will see spores or black stains, usually in rooms with humidity (bathroom etc) but it can be anywhere, even around window frames… also, you will have symptoms like fatigue or difficulty breathing. the BEST solution is to call a professional (or several) and ask for testing first. Once testing results come, the professional in mold remediation interprets results and will tell you what are the best steps to take for your situation. It’s better to have a professional who wears several hats (like my bf) who also knows about reno, home building, and a bit of electricity etc. If you are in Northern Virginia,the company is called Mold Removal Services in Sterling. Thank you Dr. Peterson and Dr. Shoemaker. I purchased a home that had hidden mold and water damage. It started with headaches, then blurry vision, chronic fatigue, after a couple months it progressed into debilitating brain fog, nerve pain, temperature deregulation and seizures. Within a year I was struggling to do basic things and lost my business while being tossed from Doctor to Doctor with several wrong diagnoses. 100's of thousands of dollars of medical debt. Then we found the source in the home and I had to abandon the house and detox and run the shoemaker protocol for a year. It was the worst thing I've ever experienced. Thanks to his work and protocols I'm a fully functioning individual just a couple years later. Still sensitive to it. Immediate blurry vision when I cross it randomly in gas stations or stores. But overall back to normal after intense rehabilitation, detox and hard work. I really appreciate you guys bringing attention to this so others can get properly diagnosed and treated!

7 years (age 30-37) of living in toxic mold. One month since I left and I am detoxing at the moment. This is a serious topic and the fact that there is no proper government regulation on this is INSANE to me! People slowly dying in their homes where they go to rest from a hard days work. Your home is the one place you should feel safe not poisoned! 02.12.2024 I just came back here to add a few things. One of the reasons I think mold is not regulated by the government is because in a family of 5 people, maybe only one person gets severely ill so because it affects people differently and because it doesn’t affect EVERYONE, this issue hasn’t been addressed properly. Another reason is because the politicians are getting paid by all the rich people/slumlords that own these properties. Once a building is found to have inhabitable amount of mold it becomes difficult to sell the property so everyone looks the other way. This is why when these people purchase apartment buildings they opt out of doing mold inspections. They just both shake hands and look the other way when it is damn obvious that the building they are buying has mold. * I also strongly believe the rise of candida in people is due to mold but I am not a doctor but just wanted to put my suspicion out there if it helps anyone. Also, I cannot reiterate this enough! If you are someone who is experiencing mold illness “YOU ARE NOT CRAZY”!!! The lack of awareness and the inability of medical doctors to catch and diagnose this illness will leave you feeling EXTREMELY invalidated! I got to a point where I convinced myself that I was making up my symptoms and that it was all in my head because what else can I do when I ran out of explanations and every single doctor I saw over the course of 7 years telling me there is nothing wrong with me. Hang in there, the mental, emotional and psychological distress is no fucking joke. Understand that mold/fungus fucks with your gut micro biome which then fucks with your brain because most chemicals that support your brain are being produced in your gut. This is also why you can’t sleep through the night. Chemicals + proteins play a big part in you falling asleep and STAYING asleep. And once your sleep is out the door, it is another level of pain and suffering that I CANNOT describe. I literally understand why they use sleep deprivation when interrogating people, I know this sounds crazy to say but mold can do that to you. So it is EXTREMELY important that you understand the magnitude of how mold is fucking up your life. I looooooooove life and this fucking thing had me wanting to end it many times. I fucking love being here! I got this far because of the people that I love and love me. At the end of the day, you are the only one living in your body so if the medical doctors fail you, don’t gaslight yourself! What you are feeling is VERY fucking real!

CT scan was fairly clear, but I was convinced it was in there. I used Neilmed salin nasal wash, but this time I put a fair bit of pressure on it and closed the other nostril. I felt the solution go all the way in to my ear canal. Your 2 cavities have a small opening between them. Over the coming days my throat hurt, and I spat up grass green mould. I feel WAY better now. In New Zealand this is an epidemic. Our houses are usually overcrowded (as we have not built enough of them to properly house the population), poorly heated, poorly insulated, poorly ventilated. Also many of the houses built in the 80’s and 90’s were poorly constructed and had leaks, causing them to rot from the inside.
@ericv738
@ericv738 3 ай бұрын
Do something about it. JP says to change what you can in your immediate community. Can houses in New Zealand be constructed in such a way so as to be preventative of black mold? Develop a thesis, test it, form a company, demonstrate your methods to investors, and build houses that people want to live in because of their anti fungal properties. I guarantee that the current mainstream construction industry is building incorrectly for your climate in your country. Everything from air flow to materials used can be tested, changed and implemented into the "anti-mold" house. Then charge a fair price, and grow rich because of your efforts. That's how a society is supposed to address problems.

@@ericv738 It's not entirely the houses fault. Cultural practices contribute a lot to mold in old houses due to hanging washing indoors with no ventilation and not opening windows and or doors in the bathroom during and after having hot showers. We are starting to see the same in some places in America. Especially in these developments where they build "planned communities". The developers and builders are more worried about a profit, than building the homes right. They figure on average most homeowners here do at least 1 major renovation every 7 to 10 years. The contractors leave the problems for the next guy. It's about production and how fast they can slap them together and get them sold. It's sad because these homes aren't cheap to begin with. One subdivision near me, when they first started, 30+ years ago, the houses there started at like $250,000/house, the land was anywhere from 10 to 50K depending on where it was. I guess now they are over 500K + another 100K for the land. It's wild to think for that kind of money, your home should be built to withstand the elements.

I had a mold issue and was able to control it using damprid. I also got a cheap humidity sensor, and kept adding more bags of damprid until the humidity levels came down. It took a *lot* of the damprid in my case - 21 bags hanging simultaneously in a 500 SF apartment. But my humidity source was quite a problem: zero ventilation in the bathroom. It was worth it. My mental health improved massively in days. I went from living in a dark and hopeless world to living my normal life. For less than $100, I may have even avoided suicide. I got out of that apartment as fast as I could. Landlord let me break the lease. To her credit, she also responded with carpet cleaners when I mentioned the mold problem. Before I learned about controlling it via humidity, before I realized it was mold, I just thought of it as “my apartment has a smell”. I would put baking soda down on the carpet and vacuum it up later, and that helped for a day or two at a time. But the smell would come back. Musty odor, almost like water damage. If your place has a smell, start with a humidity sensor. If it’s reading over 50% consistently you’ve got a problem.

Hey I had this! Yes, a relative was living in a dank basement suite and there was mold and black mold all over the place. I helped them power-clean the place and especially the shower. What I suppose happened is scrubbing and blasting all the mold off the walls is when I got too much exposure. Maybe 3-6 weeks later, I cant recall the exact time but I remember I was feeling so bad, I'd get super hot flushes from the slightest efforts but then I'd get chilled. At a point I was so exhausted, like to-the-core exhaustion, utterly sapped, to stand up was like effort. Finally I go to the doctor and when the blood tests return they have me all but 'emergency evac' to a cancer clinic for big extended tests (leukemia i think it was?) and by the time that happens the 'bad blood count' is going down and down and or the 'good blood count' was going up and up. Indeed, I start feeling better and better and maybe a month later back to my old self. I don't know if I suffered permanent damage though, I think I'm okay. It did ruin my life for a while though. I really can't remember the tests but whatever it was they seemed sure that a kind of black mold was the only remaining explanation and what can do whatever was done. (If its not Leukemia)

I got mold poisoning from an old homestead where I was resident caretaker for three months, a summer. I had body aches, fatigue, cough, low grade fever with no explanation, brain fog, depression. A dozen doctors and all sorts of tests revealed nothing. I was accused of malingering and nearly lost my job. I suspected mold all along, but was told it was unlikely and there was no means of testing for it. This was in 1999. The symptoms began to fade slowly, and I placed myself on a strict vegan diet, drank lots of teas, took colon cleanses, and spent time outdoors in the sun. It took a year for the symptoms to clear. Now, however, I am super sensitive to mold. A minute or less, and I’ll start to feel nauseous and wheeze.

Thank you for communicating this! As a healthcare worker, I experienced unimaginable challenges during the COVID crisis. I devoted myself to helping others while living and working out of an airstream trailer. Unfortunately, this seemingly safe haven turned out to have water intrusion issues stemming from a back door that defied repair after six attempts by the airstream dealership. As a result, I fell seriously ill and was eventually diagnosed with CIRS. Testing revealed the presence of Chaetomium globosum, a highly toxic black mold, and actinomycetes, a bacteria that thrives in water-damaged environments, within the trailer. I am currently undergoing treatment, but the toll this has taken on my health and well-being cannot be overstated.

I live in a mobile home meant for the lower 48. (Alaska) It was built in the early seventies. No form of winterization is available due to a previous owner having-had the state lend assistance in that matter. (twenty years prior) At this point, the water damage to the building is significant. The roof leaks in several areas & the mobile home court makes consistent checks to ensure we are not doing any rebuild to the homes we own. (It's more complicated than that, but the short version is ' we aren't allowed to do the work that would be needed to fix these dwellings we own, due to them (codes) needing to be recreated in EXACTLY the same fashion. i.e. "no replacement roofs" Not only are these exact replacement remodels not feasible with modern building materials or practices, but they have been proven even when attempted, as ineffective bandages now for years. I have had to remove & or replace insulation in the entirety of my kitchen roof, but was unable to replace the sheetrock on the ceiling due to the continued leaks. Our homes are damaged, our walls are filled with black & green & grey molds, our floors rot out under our feet & have to be replaced by our own hands piecemeal in efforts to keep our homes livable.. I think there may be something to this.

I have wanted to scream this from the inner most depths. I am very conscious of myself and have known something has changed in my health in a drastic way. I started an excellent career, but it came with a price. The building in working in has had repeated water damage over many years. I had no idea what was happening to me; post covid, long-term covid. I had no idea, and then it dawned on me, mold. It started with a constant runny nose and red eyes, then came headaches, body aches, brain fog, vision problems, short-term memory loss, and then extreme depression! I have never had depression issues like this. *Note: I am allergic to oral penicillin, also. There are so many odd things going on in my body. My legs, where exposed, were breaking out in what looked like pseudo folliculitus. I spoke to the owner and she had a mold test ran. As you can expect we had a very active result. The area was cleaned and it made my symptoms worse! I bought an at home test and the results were the same as last. A multitude of different spores. Thank you. JP

I do building fabric repairs and I am not surprised to hear about the association with Drywall and toxic mold growth. On a daily basis I encounter rampant mold growth in drywall that has degraded due to water damage. Often it can even be under the paper within the wet plasterboard and only visible as i break it apart. Black mold grows readily inside most of the wall cavities from the humidity alone without any visible signs of water damage. Drywall soaks up water both from the spills and air and hold it like a sponge leading to mold growth. I only get called in when the soft wet plasterboard breaks; I dread to think of all the areas where mold is quietly thriving undisturbed in the hospital. Iv also witnessed mold grow on Antifungal silicones so the idea we are driving natural selection in molds definitely holds water. Mold is a rampant issue in modern buildings.

For all the concerns regarding this vast mountain of information; so much of it being new to even the well educated and well informed non-specialist, I have to wonder how anyone can ever hope to wrap their understanding around even a small portion of it. My sincere hope is that somehow these concepts can be made accessible to us, and maybe through the power of A.I.,which, for all the hype, both positive and negative that the very term conjures up, will bring its potential and its power to be able to collate this information in a way that we can benefit from it by our having a deeper understanding that transcends our general ignorance which is compounded by our fear for our very lives and the lives of our loved ones. Really happy to see this info disseminate into the commons more. This is a known thing to me and several of my close friends, but I have nowhere near the social leverage as JP. I absolutely geek out on indoor air quality, and find the building materials choices for various locales (regardless of temperature, humidity, coastal, inland, etc. considerations) to be completely insane and only focused on bottom line profit, and not on human wellbeing / needs / values. In addition, nearly all household cleaning products include endocrine disruptors, known carcinogens, etc. and I view this as a very similar overlooked / unconscious problem. I have had episodes of sleepless "mania" that were described as "bipolar", when in reality, my psyche was just trying to tell me to get the hell out of the mold infested, toxic housing environment.

Perfect timing for this podcast, I looked up in the shower yesterday and said to myself "oh, it's back again". We absolutely have black mold in the upstairs bathroom and bedroom windows and the basement too but that was finally remediated. Unfortunately being in a rental leaves not a lot of options save what the landlord wants to spend money on. I have a host of symptoms discussed in this fabulous podcast and was recently "diagnosed" with fibromyalgia. The dr has never once asked about mold. For a year now she has dismissed all of my symptoms as "stress". Her approach and "treatment" is the Rx pad. Thank you Dr. Peterson and guests for bringing this incredibly important research to light.

Stress is a legitimate concern for these symptoms as well.

Put some bleach and water in a spray bottle and spray the mold …u can watch it disappear….bleach kills the mold and spores…sounds like it’s settled into the drywall of the home….maybe the landlord would ok the cost of paint that’s specifically for killing and blocking mold….it would be worth the cost to even purchase the paint urself and put a coat of paint on the walls affected by mold…a friend of mine was having a hell of a time recovering from severe bronchitis to the point he would lose his voice….which made life difficult considering his boss is hearing impaired and couldn’t hear him at all when he would have bronchitis flare ups….I stopped over to check on him and noticed the huge amounts of black mold showing through the paint on the walls and ceiling in his bathroom…I sprayed it with some stronger bleach water mix and watched the mold disappear….by the next day, his bronchitis had cleared up to the point he got his voice back and quit coughing all the time….so he had to continue to use the bleach to keep it under control….the only way to get it completely under control is to rip out all the affected material and replace it with water resistant material…they make a green backed drywall specifically for bathrooms and kitchens…it’s a few $ more per sheet then regular drywall so it boggles my mind why it’s not just the normal thing to use in all bathrooms…

These are the interviews I personally enjoy the most. I'm really looking forward to more like these. I keep thinking about the ATG-Knees Over Toes Guy, in the content of pursuing and pushing the boundaries of what we know and act on.

Thanks for bringing this topic up! The problem with a lot of housing (especially in freezing climates) is the vapor barrier. Miss a spot and you get air drafts. I had mold on the all walls, had to rip all the Poly out and redo the basement on my 5 year old house. I went with closed cell spray foam and it's been perfectly fine. Closed cell will also prevent radon, which is another leading cause of cancer.

Are you chemical sensitivity? I have closed cell and react to it.

@@ericajoseph7245 I didn't after I covered it with drywall, but it was in-between the interior studs @ 3" is it exposed? Also, poly will work but it has to be perfectly sealed,

Thank, God you done a segment on this @jordanbpeterson! I wholly agree that I have this as for 6 years I live with dry and wet rot under the flooring and it took my landlord till the 7 th year to pull up, but I have the only downpipe from the guttering for 6 houses which when heavy rain it floods my garden and goes through the vent into the under flooring. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and this has certainly worsen since living here !! My inflammatory markers have been at their highest 200 and lowest recently 30. I of not working sleeping 18 hrs a day as so exhausted I cannot function mentally at times. If I finish work usually fall asleep when home.

Thank you for mentioning military housing. My family has fought mold sickness for 20 years. Now my kids are grown, and they have many friends, who have gone into the military. The stories I hear about military housing make me sick. I have heard of several instances where clothing hung in a closet had to be thrown away because it was covered in mold after just a couple of weeks. Thank you Jordan Peterson for highlighting this issue. Dr. Shoemaker, thank you so much for staying in the game these many years. I have followed your work from the beginning. It has been a very long road for you.
