The word Doppleganger originates from German Romantic Novel Siebenkas - by Jean Paul. Jean Paul also wrote a book called 'The Invisible Lodge' about a nether world inside a mountain. It was based on a post death experience that Jean Paul had suffered whilst hiking through the Alps .

Man, I have a theory that I want to share with you: it's not new to anyone to think that MAYBE Laura Palmer is Judy, actually. But you ever noticed that Judy have the arms inverted? In the scene after the nuclear bombs tests, while she is spitting hers eggs with Bob between them, it is possible to see her arms are not normal, because the polegars are inverted. So, compare that with one of the firsts frases of Laura Palmer in the Black Lodge: Sometimed my arms bend back. This just blowed my mind. What do you think?
@GeorgMayer7 жыл бұрын
My take on the Doppelgänger (versus the fabricated characters) is that they are not a different person, but they are part of the "original" person, they show one side of that person, but a true side. So bad Coop is something that was part of Dale B. Cooper when he entered the red room. In the same way I see the force inside Laura and the force inside Sarah as identical (or one), just used based on different triggers from the outside world. In layman words: if you approach a woman in a certain way you will be treated respectively. I guess what Laura whispered into Coopers ear was therefore something along the lines that she (Laura) is not only the good force opposing Bob, she is in fact the mother herself - she can be good, she can be evil. It's up to the person communicating with her, how this plays out. But those are just theories of course. I really like your videos, they are great and they are always pushing my imagination and understanding a bit further. Thank you.

Tammy specifically calls the doppleganger from the initial Blue Rose incident a 'tulpa', another nod to Lynch's fascination with tibetan buddhism and transcendental meditation. My initial thought was that any human who enters the space of the red room/waiting room inevitably had a doppleganger produced due to nature of the place, but that entities that are either from that place or exist natively in that space do not. Obviously the arm's doppleganger calls that into question, though perhaps the severing of a part of MIKE's spirit into the arm made it something slightly less than the other entities there, hence subject to having a doppleganger. This, in turn, leads me to wonder if entities strong enough in this space have the knowledge and power to not only influence dopplegangers there, but if in possession of them (as BOB was with Evil Coop) then they can create further 'tulpas' based off at least their physiology. Perhaps by dominating a weaker spirit within the lodge and changing their essence into the 'thought-form' they are currently possessing. Food for thought on Tulpas... "Tulpa is a spiritual discipline and teachings concept in Tibetan Buddhism and Bon. The term “thoughtform” is used as early as 1927 in Evans-Wentz' translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. John Myrdhin Reynolds in a note to his English translation of the life story of Garab Dorje defines a tulpa as “an emanation or a manifestation.”[2] The 14th Dalai Lama is said to be partly a tulpa of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The Dalai Lama mentioned in a public statement that his successor might appear via tulpa while the current Dalai Lama is still alive.[5]"

Jacob Berger Like the arm, I think Dougie is an essence of Cooper that Bad Cooper forged from the seedy, gambling, lustful, lame side, parts of Cooper he obviously knew he didn't need and wouldn't detract from his potency as a badass.
@OrbitZombie7 жыл бұрын
Wee Jock You know... that is a good explanation! DoppelCoop isn't the bloodthirsty, feral, manic, thrill-killer he was before because BOB and DoppelCoop took all the "party animal"-like traits out of himself to forge the Dougie tulpa.
@OrbitZombie7 жыл бұрын
I don't think doppelgangers themselves are the tulpas, its like Hawk says, they are "The Dweller on the Threshold", your shadow self. But the doppelgangers can produce further copies through manifesting tulpas.
@robertbusek305 жыл бұрын
Here’s a possible explanation for the doppelgänger question: since doppelgängers are creatures of the Lodge, the relationship between Bob and Bad Coop is more symbiotic than between Bob and Leland, who’s an ordinary human being. This might harken back to Bob’s status as being Mike’s “familiar” back in Season 2.

I'm thinking Evil Coop doesn't contain ALL of BOB's essence, and the first bit of evidence is we only got a momentary glimpse of him in the prison mirror. I'm also thinking BOB's impulsiveness and unhinged personality was dumped off into whoever he may have impregnated to father Richard, be it Donna or Audrey.
@BartScantlin7 жыл бұрын
Thats a good point. Bob is supposed be be crazy and lustful and just unhinged really. Richard is pretty unhinged, I'd say, but I don't know what Richard's end game is.
@mikenayers59817 жыл бұрын
He may not have one. If he only exists, because Evil Coop needed to get rid of that part of BOB to work more efficiently, then he probably wasn't given a second thought after that. That being said, he may be a wild card that turns the tables in an unpredictable way. But another thing people forget too, is that BOB also has Windom Earle's soul. Evil Cooper is more of a schemer than we saw of BOB, so fathering Richard may have been done to take advantage of that. This also wasn't forgotten since EC is shown using his Windom's suitcase computer.

We may never get a 4th season... but thanks to you, we will ALWAYS have a place where we are able to ponder, question, theorize, debate, and collectively enjoy what we already have... and to DREAM about what may or may not come in the future... even if some of us have no friends close by who are even remotely interested in experiencing an intelligently challenging piece of cinematic genius like "Twin Peaks"... or indeed ANYTHING by David Lynch... we'll always have THIS community. Personally, I haven't had anyone to watch these works of art with since my mother passed away... she was diagnosed with cancer and never got to watch "The Return", so we only ever watched seasons 1, 2, and FWWM together... she was the person who introduced me to Twin Peaks to begin with, way back in 1992. Seriously... thanks, dude. "Billy" is Billy Zane!

So, I originally thought that if humans had a connection to the black lodge, then when they died, they would be split into two beings, one composed of their goodness, and one made of their bad nature. when a human entered the black lodge as Cooper did, they generated a doppleganger in the lodge. I thought that Coop's doppleganger came into existence when Cooper entered the lodge. Then FWWM came out and it seemed that Coop's Doppleganger existed before he first went to Twin Peaks, since he appears on camera in the FBI office building. That made me think that Coop was being stalked by the spirits in the lodge from very early on. Now, with the Return and it's time discrepancies it seems that my original idea might still be right. Coop's Doppleganger, generated when he entered the lodge, may not be hinged to fixed time, and could have appeared in the past.

Bob latched on to Leland when he was a child. Sarah is not the origin of evil in that house. Whatever is going on with Sarah, let's not forget that the painting Mrs. Chalfont gave Laura is likely still in the house... a portal to the black lodge both ways. There are lots of theories but that's the only solid link to evil we've actually been shown without having to guess.

My first theory was that what they would find on their second visit would be Cooper's shoes, which were left on the same room Naido was (theory goes around that he's not himself yet because he exited without the shoes with which he entered the lodge and he'll be himself when he puts them on). But they finding Laura makes more sense. I recall she was pulled out of the lodge in a very similar way as Naido.

Remember Tammy alluded to these doppelgangers as being "tulpas". According to le internet a " Tulpa is a thoughtform, or being created from the collective thoughts of separate individuals. The concept of Tulpas is theoretical in nature and originates from Tibetan mythology, where Tulpas are described as extra bodies that were created from one person's mind in order to travel to spiritual realms" So these entities could have conjured physical bodies for themselves like Dougie Jones. We know for certain that a war of sorts is brewing between the two lodges. We also know that they're multiple planes of existence in the Twin Peaks (and David Lynch) universe. Ultimately I think David Lynch is the dreamer (he literally is). Each character is a projection of himself and each doppelganger is a projection of one of Lynch's characters, and so on. It really is an intricate web here.

I think there's an important distinction between possession and inhabitation. Inhabited characters were not always possessed. They were sometimes themselves. Leland was often "himself" until after Laura's murder, when he became unhinged. With dopplegangers, I think it's not so much an inhabitation as a collaboration. I see no evidence that BOB controls or empowers Evil Coop...in fact, Coop has to double check to see if he's even still with him. Not sure why that's good! Also, I just have to say that whenever you use that little clip of the sweaty Leland, it utterly slays me. But, in this video, it was just beyond epic! Your comic timing is awesome, Wow Lynch Wow! Might the Doppelganger theme also be something to do with Jung's idea of the Shadow (Self)? That would fit with another archetype, the 'Mother' (in this case, 'of all evil') ...dear old Agent Dale seems to be embodying a 'Child' archeype in his innocent Fool-ishness .... the whole play on Dreaming harks back to the ancient Eastern mystical idea that we inhabit a Dream Dreaming itself ... then again wonder if Lynch and Frost are also playing around with/homaging other TV genre programmes from the 1960s - eg, The Man From 'Uncle', The Prisoner (No. 6 on the telegraph pole) ....maybe the Good Coop and Bad Coop might even arm wrestle each other one day! Such rich work in any event, and you do a great job in your Recap and Review renditions, thanks so much!

This reminded me of the red square that appeared on Duncan Todd's computer way back. I'm not sure what, if anything, this could mean, but it was purposely put right where we could see it. Also, what's up with all that FBI equipment??? What is it for? Even the coffee maker in the background has blinking blue lights on it! For what it's worth, the only thing I think is fairly likely to happen is Janey-E really being Diane's half-sister. I think there WILL be confusion over which Coop is which, but I think it will be a good deal different from the scenario you mentioned.

@Derek_Smallshorts7 жыл бұрын
I think it very likely it's a dream (given that all of Lynch's films are dreams). I think it's completely fine that Janey-E is Diane's sister. It makes sense in a weird sort of way, and it won't be coincidence. I'm not even sure why you'd consider it a plot hole since they've not seen each other in years and Diane doesn't know what Dougie looks like. We've already established that Bad Coop is HOPELESS at imitating Good Coop, so even if he tries it, I think people will cotton on pretty quickly; I think the scene The Fireman/The Giant showed Andy where he leads Lucy into that office and she's looking shocked and glancing from side to side might be a moment where he shows her the two Coops side-by-side. I even have a suspicion that rather than face off against each other, the two Coops might end up having to work together against something.

The cop that approaches the car and has a bad reaction to the stench happens to be named "Billy". Sarah was the first to see Bob himself, her bad habbits with long time smoking and drinking, she has a doppleganger for sure, but is still with her, not separetly (Twin Peaks/Waiting Room), she talks with herself, the sound of bottles in the kitchen. As also Gordon has something weirdy with his visions, dreams, shaking hands, he saw the vortex...
@EduardoLeviBC7 жыл бұрын
i think the dopplegangers are created when someone fails on confronting they're own FEAR inside the lodge (by physically being there, or in a dream, or a vision etc). So Bob uses the FEAR to manufacture the dopple as a shadow and fake being. ARM says, "when you see me again it wont be me" so he knew Cooper was about to face his most deep fears (caroline and annie). When Earle asks for his soul Coop shows his fear, and BOb uses it. It can explain why the ARM and MIKE are concerned when Cooper is about to leave the lodge. They say to each other, "there's something wrong". Probably when MIKE saw the face of GOD, BOB used the fear in the arm to create a doppleganger to take control inside the lodge (while he is off). So thats why the dopple ARM sends Coop to non existent, and help out BOB in his plans. confusing hahahah

Talking about doubles, mirror images and perfect antagonists, I have my own theories..., but as soon as I saw E14 I couldn't stop thinking about the tale told by Grace Zabriskie in Inland Empire: "A little boy went out to play. When he opened his door he saw the world when he passed through he caused a reflection and evil was born and followed the boy. Evil was born". Would you agree that this tale is quite relevant? Particularly told by Sarah Palmer herself (or her-doppel-self). Actually, I started thinking about this story in E13 (Audrey and her story, the girl who lives at the end of the street...). The stories of the girl and the boy are strangely connected in Inland Empire. There's something there, dark, fascinating. I'm not sure that we will be given a clear explanation, I sincerely hope we won't be given one. I want it a mystery, a suggestive brutal mystery.

Doppelganger, doppelganger, whose got the doppelganger? I have been thinking through a theory that, back when all the Coopers and Dougie shifted, that Evil Coop shifted to Dougie, and Good Coop is actually the guy we think is Evil Coop. (Only problem is the shoes, but bear with me.) In the Mauve Zone, the first instance of Cooper in the machine room was when time was shifting back and forth (like alternating current), and after the eyeless woman pulled the switch on top, everything became smooth (like direct current). Cars have direct current; houses, alternating. So what if, when Evil Coop started vomiting and saw the image of Dougie in the Waiting Room, he actually switched with Dougie? And Good Coop switched with Evil Coop? Since the switch, Mr. C. has only killed criminals, has maybe had BOB removed from him by the Woodsmen, and maybe IS working with Diane ("who ARE you?"). The former Evil Coop/now Dougie is confused and weakened by his change into a manufactured being. Just a crackpot theory, but crazier things have happened in "the triumphant return of Twin Peaks!"

@garybrockie63277 жыл бұрын
Couple of observations. First, the Arm told Coop that his doppelgänger had to come back in before he could go out. Bad Coop manufactured Dougie and Dougie was wearing the ring. Dougie got sucked back into the lodge and good Coop took his place. I did notice that everything but his shoes went through. Good Coop did not completely go through because bad Coop did not return to the lodge or die. I don't think that good Coop will wake up until bad Coop is either dead or back in the lodge. Second, there is an out for Good Coop! He could just live the rest of his life as Douglas Jones with Janey and Sonny Jim. Third, Andy was probably picked by the Fireman because the evil characters will little suspect that Andy knows the score. Andy has a good heart and as the log lady pointed out to Hawk the Truman brothers are true men and so are the others he has worked with for so long. Andy certainly fits the bill. Fourth, Andy told Sheriff Truman, Hawk, and Bobby that there was nothing wrong with the eyeless woman physically. He also said that people were going to try and kill her so no one must know about her. A doctor would be an unnecessary risk here. We must trust Andy here. Fifth, there is a lot of bad things that have gone down at the Palmer residence. If Sarah comes out of this in one piece she will be lucky and should move to another location. Wow. I never watched Twin Peaks when it originally ran. I started watching the new series in May. I was lost. I went back and streamed the original episodes and now I am obsessing just look at this post. I love this series. Mystery, Comedy, Horror and more often than not a nice little concert somewhere along the way. I would love a season 4 but, I am so happy with what we are getting. PS one more thought, maybe the gentle voice of Gordon Cole will wake Good Coop up.

Great post. I think Good Coop doesn't want to wake up. He has a family, and if he wakes up, he will lose them.

kmk0145 Not sure he would lose them. Janey is in love with the new Dougie, and who better to be a new father to Sonny Jim than Dale Cooper.

Ok, that's interesting. I don't think it is explained how the doppelgangers work in this "üniverse" but my understanding is that when the Bob got into the evil Coop and got out into the world he knew that "they" will try and take him back, he knew how it works. He knew that the one doppelganger will have to die by poisoning or something, and the good one will come in his place. So my understanding is that the Evil Coop, knowing how the system works, made another doppelganger - Duggie, so when the time comes Duggie will bite the dust and he will survive, as it happened. Duggie got killed and Evil Coop suffered some damage. I think the thing with doppelgangers is one is the opposite of the person in real life. Like the Black and White lodge. Good and Evil, Yin and Yang etc. When the Nuclear bomb opened this dimentional portal the evil was unleashed upon Earth so the White lodge guys had to send a balance, The Angel Lora Palmer. That's how i understood the whole thing. I dunno, i hope they manage to explain all the weird stuff that happened in this series, man :) Crazy stuff, like what was that all about with Bobby Brigs witnessing that boy throwing up in the car ? What was with the fat lady that got beaten by the wanker that run over the kid, and so on and so on. I dunno how you guys figured out that this weird tree thing is the arm of the ONe arm man. I just miss so much things.

My theory for Sarah is that she is the young girl who had the frog/moth climb down her throat and she's been possessed by it in some way ever since. Seems the most logical conclusion based on everything we've seen so far.
@wrathofmatt42987 жыл бұрын
If you like this theory I hope you might expand on it and maybe give me a shout out for my birthday in your next video, be cool to see while in hospital. Twin Peaks is The Never Ending Story. Okay Laura Palmer is a 12 year old girl who like to write she keeps a detailed journal. The beginning of Twin Peaks when her body is found is really her and that happened but she wasn't murdered she killed herself. Her diary was found during the investigation and this is the story of Twin peaks. Someone is reading her diary and doing so we're seeing the interpretation of that reader about lauras struggle with life from a 12 year old to the age of 17 (Season 1,2 and fwwm) after lauras story of what's happening and at this point I believe she was schizophrenic and it was clear in her writing, all caused by the trauma of her father raping her and her mother not caring and just being a drunk. Since the story has continued after Laura has past on the characters took on a life of their own (The Never Ending Story) and that world is now starting to unravel since Laura only gave them 25 years to exist. 'I'll see you again in 25 years'

What!!!??? Laura was send by the Giant to fix the balance evil did. The evil wants to destroy the White Lodge and, with a 25 years gap, it opens the portal to evil take its plans. Everytime it happens, evil or Bob take over the spirit of "Laura" or someone closer to her to kill.

Sarah Palmer also had that snake tongue thing before the hand showed up. That made me think she might be the bug girl from New Mexico. But that'd put her at about 73 in this timeline.

There still is the "fire" that the Log Lady talks about to Hawk that we have not seen, and I feel it will be just that, something involving a fire. Plus there are certain scenes that haven't aired yet, some of which were from the trailers. But all in good time as they say.....

I think any human who enter the lodges will find a doppelganger of themselves there. I think they're created when the person visits the lodge for the first time.
@Kiyosuki7 жыл бұрын
Doppelgangers kind of embody what I think have been two centrally recurring themes during the Return: Disparity, and Time & Space. Disparity is easy to see. Light and Dark, Love and compassion versus cruelty and hate, innocence vs corruption etc. The theme is strewn all throughout all the various arcs and segments throughout the series. The other theme, Time and Space, I think is a more subtle, nebulous one but I feel it's omnipresent throughout the series. Questionable chronology, and even the implication of different dimensions and points where they may converge. Not to mention all the "glitches". Both are obviously indicative of the two Lodges, being opposite concepts as well as existing on a plane of time and space that is nonlinear, interacting with our plane of existence(s?) which is very much linear.

-While the show made clear that Bob requires a human host to walk amongst us, it seems to me that "Mother" is too strong an entity to have any requirements. Why would the Mother of all Evil possess an older lady and spend her time watching TV and smoking cigarettes? Why does Evil Coop need coordinates to a place he has already been to? (he left Twin Peaks 25 years ago) -The imagery we are shown when Sarah takes her face off seems to indicate the presence of Laura's doppelganger (which we know she has - we saw her in the TV series) but can doppelgangers be possessive spirits? If the spirit of Laura was created to have a messianic role, does her doppelganger act as a type of Anti-Messiah? -Also: while Andy was with the Fireman and watching the portal, we can now clearly see little "antennae" on the Mother's head as spews forth eggs and the Bob essence. Looks exactly like the symbol Evil Coop has been carrying around on the card. I think we all suspected this, but now we know for sure. - I love how no one comments or really seems to notice that Naido's eyes are sewn over. Perfect Twin Peaks moment. Even Chad didn't ask anyone what was going on with the eyeless lady over there making monkey noises.
@BartScantlin7 жыл бұрын
Good points. I sure don't have any answers. Essentially the Mother was added into the mix this season, right? Seasons 1 and 2 didn't mention anything like that from what I can recall. The Twin Peaks universe is quite large and complex.
@VDog747 жыл бұрын
I found another aspect of this episode especially intriguing. Could the entire Twin Peaks story - everything - be a dream by one of the main characters? Gordon Cole says that Monica Belluci tells him in his dream, " We are like the dreamers who dream, then live inside the dream." It was really awesome that they flashed back to Fire Walk With Me, when Philip Jeffries tells Gordon Cole about the black lodge that "We lived inside a dream..." Could this whole thing all be Cooper's dying dream, or perhaps Laura Palmer's dying dream? Maybe someone else?
@drinkfullanddescend25087 жыл бұрын
Did you notice that the order of the characters reverses as they approach the spot east of Jack Rabbit's? I/We didn't in time for the podcast, but it goes from Hawk, Frank, Andy, Bobby (multiple shots) to Bobby, Andy, Frank, Hawk in the last shot as they get there. Something interesting to think about!
@wrathofmatt42987 жыл бұрын
The woman with no eyes felt Coops face and smiled to show she memorized who he was, evil Coop will trick her but she might be able to tell either his hair or his face isn't as soft and Andy will help her or Andy will just know because of what the fireman showed him, also the kid with the glove , how do we know it was the fireman he spoke to. I'm only thinking this because Dougie Coop has helped randoms after being sent back but this kid is violent the first thing he thinks of doing is punching a guy in the head especially since he's beginning to believe his dream he knew the power the glove had maybe he wanted to test that part of the dream to.

I think these are mainly Mark Frost's theosophical influences with a lot of reference/hints from the Blavatsky book "Dweller on the threshold". Just read the wiki-page (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dweller_on_the_threshold) about the book. Could also read Van Morrison's lyrics: I'm a dweller on the threshold And I'm waiting at the door And I'm standing in the darkness I don't want to wait no more I have seen without perceiving I have been another man Let me pierce the realm of glamor So I know just what I am I'm a dweller on the threshold And I'm waiting at the door And I'm standing in the darkness I don't want to wait no more Feel the angel of the present In the mighty crystal fire Lift me up consume my darkness Let me travel even higher I'm a dweller on the threshold As I cross the burning ground Let me go down to the water Watch the great illusion drown I'm a dweller on the threshold And I'm waiting at the door And I'm standing in the darkness I don't want to wait no more I'm gonna turn and face the music The music of the spheres Lift me up consume my darkness When the midnight disappears I will walk out of the darkness And I'll walk into the light And I'll sing the song of ages And the dawn will end the night I'm a dweller on the threshold And I'm waiting at the door And I'm standing in the darkness I don't want to wait no more I'm a dweller on the threshold And I cross some burning ground And I'll go down to the water Let the great illusion drown I'm a dweller on the threshold And I'm waiting at the door And I'm standing in the darkness I don't want to wait no more I'm a dweller on the threshold Dweller on the threshold I'm a dweller on the threshold I'm a dweller on the threshold

As usual with Frost and Lynch there will be a lot of strands going off on their own trails to infinity - having played their related part - never to be seen again - a bit like life really ! I back Bobby to be next in the white Lodge - following in his fathers footsteps remember Garland's (no not Judy) vision of his son's happyness ?

I was thinking BOB's control over a Doppelganger depended on how strong or weak the original person was. Cooper was much stronger mentally and physically than Leland was. Leland was always crying and anguished after Laura's Death, Cooper was cold and calculating whenever he killed. I had never considered that Leland may have been a Doppelganger before, since we only saw him in the Black Lodge after his death. I always thought he was just possessed. As to what's going on with Sarah, maybe she's possessed by the Experiment or whatever that thing it vomited, can't wait to find out.

Dougie is a talpa, a Buddhist reference, different than a doppelganger and i believe Andy was chosen by the Fireman because he has a pure heart and childlike innocence. Really hoping for another season, but showtime bumping twin peaks up an hour and relatively mediocre ratings are not a good sign. thanks for your reviews and maybe mention the petition online for a season 4 and that link again if you can. I think this season was absolutely brillant.

I don't believe Becky, Steve, Norma, Ed, Jerry, Billy, the kid throwing up in the car will have anything to do with the main story - none of that really matters story-wise - they are all just interesting red herrings and side stories, or maybe they will form part of a new series. I have no idea how this will end, which is all part of the enjoyment. There will be a reasonably satisfactory ending though, and maybe a couple of stray bits to keep us wanting more. I've never been more excited about a TV show in years, feel like a kid again!

Doppelgängers are pure evil if from the black lodge, the arm was evil...as why it was removed when Mike saw "the face of god". Possession is separate. The person's soul is at constant battle with the inhabitant. If Sarah is just possessed, then maybe it's why she drinks so much but I honestly think she's bug girl and Bob used her as a vessel to get to Twin Peaks where she met Leland and Bob used him as a host instead until his death. This is why she's able to communicate messages from The Black Lodge at the end of Season 2
