My favorite wrestler of all time. This guy is my childhood. I remember every time I would put on smackdown during the ruthless aggression era just to see the Undertaker. Everyone else was fluff to me, just another body for the Undertaker to bury. It's strange to watch WWE nowadays without him coming out every week. When he finally retires I will miss him so damn much. Great job and I can't wait for the future parts of this retrospective.

@@TherealRNOwwfpooh I don't even know if taker would make my Rushmore. Hogan and Flair definitely would. Macho or Sting, then maybe Taker. Definitely one of the greatest gimmicks of all time but it didn't require much as far as charisma and mic skill. WWE booked him well, making him seem unstoppable and putting him in a program with Hogan. He'd be in my top 10, all time, maybe top 5. But I feel like it would be disrespectful to say he was greater than Flair, Hogan, Savage, or Sting. That's my Rushmore. I understand that it's subjective and I obviously have a bias based on when I grew up. But Ric is hands down the GOD when it comes to wrestling and Hogan is right up there. Also, Flair did pretty good in WWE. The program he had with savage was dope, going so far as to appear on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous with Ms Elizabeth on his yatch. Lol. Idk man, Ric is the GOAT and it's impossible to calculate just how Hogan changed the game. Like, I watch their promos and come to the conclusion that the coke and the wrestling were better back then. Coincidence? I think not. Lol. Flair and Hogan transcended wrestling. Savage did too. I can't say the same for Taker. But no disrespect intended. He could go for a guy that big and was a true professional and locker room leader. His intros and over all presentation was dope but I don't remember thinking "remember that crazy Taker promo?" Bearer talked for him for a while and the people I mentioned above didn't need that. They all could go except Hogan and they all got the loudest pop on any given night, heel or face. I just can't honestly consider Taker being greater than any of them... maybe Sting but only because I stopped watching after WWE bought WCW.

I remember the first appearance of the Undertaker as I was at Survivor series in 1990, also the NFL playoffs between the Giants vs the 49ers which the Giants won at the time. The old HCC was different back then as it is now. At one event in 89 I spotted Andre the giant playing cards and drinking beer with black jack Mulligan. Even before the event started my dad was working for security at the time and I sat there on the upper level. I saw a few wrestlers coming in and out to just stand around. One guy in particular was practicing a move on the ropes by standing on the ropes and it was cool to see. Who knew it turned out to be the Undertaker, after that the rest is history.

This video is a fecking brilliant lookback at the pivotal incidents in the very early days. I remember being genuinely freaked out by the Ultimate Warrior being locked in the casket at the Funeral Parlor. It was genuinely creepy stuff at the time. The Undertaker will go down as quite possibly the greatest spectacle of all time in wrestling. 2nd all time favorite wrestler for me behind Hulk Hogan (I go back and forth with Taker and Macho Man at #2). The reason for his extended success was his ability to tweak the Undertaker gimmick enough to make it relevant for the times. And he didn’t ALWAYS have the belt so you didn’t grow tired of seeing him as champion. When you’re so good that you don’t have to be champion to headline main-event matches at marquee shows, then you’ve hit a status that is legendary on it’s own.

You’re absolutely right about Taker and the belt. Prichard says it all the time, some characters just don’t need a belt. The belts are for the fans, not the workers. Unless you Bret Hart and you’re your own biggest mark.

Undertaker's best work wouldn't come until later but these early years were so groundbreaking and revolutionary for the wrestling business, his character wasn't like your typical "babyface" who was the man of people providing the feel good moment for them, when he came out with Paul Bearer, it was huge and you knew something big was going down. He was a man of few words but he made you listen when he did speak, everything about the presentation was done to perfection and Mark Calaway was the right guy to bring it to life.

People dont realize the longevity of the Undertaker. The man was a main event player since the days of Hogan. Undertaker was a top player before Bret Hart (whos breakthrough began in ‘92) or Shawn Michaels (main event status since ‘94 or ‘95). By the time Austin and Rock became household names, Undertaker is pretty much already a legend. A top player in the end of the Golden Era, witnessed the rise and saw the end of the New Gen era, the Attitude Era, Ruthless Agression era, and now to the current era.

the greatest WWE legend bar none. The greatest gimmick in all of pro wrestling. The most respected. The Undertaker personifies everything what WWE is all about. Everything that Vince visioned his company to be, you can pretty much get it all and sum it all up with everything that is The Undertaker. Undertaker basically IS WWE if you think about. Everything you think about in regards to WWE, Undertaker represents it all.
