Randall Wallace, graduate of Duke University, is an American NYT bestselling author of seven novels, as well as a screenwriter (TV and film), director, producer, songwriter, holder of a black belt in karate, and founder of Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity. He is perhaps best known for writing the historical drama Braveheart (1995), which earned him a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay and an Academy Award nomination in the same category, but has since directed The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), We Were Soldiers (2002), Secretariat (2010) and Heaven Is for Real (2014). Mr. Wallace also penned the lyrics to the acclaimed hymn Mansions of the Lord (music by Nick Glennie-Smith), featured in the soundtrack of When We Were Soldiers, and performed as the recessional for President Ronald Reagan's funeral.
Mr. Wallace and I discussed the power of art, music, and story, his unlikely stint writing songs for an animal band, the profound influence of Biblical stories on his work and thought, the experience of depression, the necessity and significance of sacrifice, the general development of his career as a successful Hollywood writer and director, and his upcoming action movie about the Pope.
This episode was recorded on March 9th, 2021.

I had a very similar thought as I was watching this. It is indeed an amazing time when you can witness substantive conversations between intellectuals for free basically anywhere in the world on demand. Imagine if this type of technology were around when the Federalist Papers were being published? It is a tide that raises all ships, even for the ones like Megan Chalmers who have no capacity for appreciation.

Braveheart is one of my favorite movies ever. I watched it about a week ago when the Canadian Truckers started their convoy to Ottowa to protest mandates and demand their Freedom. The support of the citizens along the road, the joining in of farmers and cowboys, the joining in from truckers in Bolivia, Mexico, Australia, Ireland, Italy and USA.. reminded me of the fighting spirit of Wallace. To love your country so much you'll die to protect her. It's a beautiful thing, beautiful movie everyone should watch now and find their own Braveheart

Mr. Wallace- I have to share with you two things. My father was a WWII veteran (a Marine radioman In the Pacific). He was incredibly moved when he heard the West Point choir sing “Mansions of the Lord,” and he told me he wanted it played at his funeral. He had no other requests for his service. And so we had a West Point choir singing at a Marine’s graveside service. Second- Secretariat was one of his favorite movies. I watched it many times with him. 😊 (I loved it, too) So, I wanted to say thank you for your work. It’s been important in my life.

The moment they spoke about the young woman who'd lost her husband thru death and he wanted her to watch Braveheart... I thought about (over six years later now) losing my second wife who didn't die but left me. Who I'd prayed for years after a bad first marriage and was celebate over three years before I met her and waited for the ONE. Who was a Marine ten years, beautiful, strong, perfect for me and my desire and like I had been in the military but failed at and I loved her so much and she lost her beloved grandma who she wanted a life like her grandparents and we had but when her grandma died she lost it on me and left and I loved her so much and she moved back across the country and just killed me, a part of me died.. Anyway, she basically died to me. It tore my heart out, completely... Man, just so much good and work for us and she thought I'd leave her like she was "garbage" in her past as she'd been done and all my family became hers and loved her and she left me, just like I'm junk and the kids that should of been ours that I've had since with people I don't love that she's now had and it was just so much insane pointless waste on hers and the "should of been" ours, "could of" and the tragedy of it was worse than if she'd actually died or me. It destroyed years of my life now and after I got over it I still am not over it watching this... Thinking about the post potential, what I let ruin my life ... There is a point to it all. There always is. God still let's this just strike my heart and me not accepting it and living. I can't even love another woman now and don't want to because the one I did is gone, forever, and I don't want because I married the one I wanted and that is gone. I don't have the strength to even be able to do what I did to get where I was to live and love like that again on this Earth. There is a reason for this and for God I can't see it... That's just a part of the tragedy of life and what I've seen but being cheated almost of the continuince of that love for her, with her, the support. The chapters coming of a book that was slammed shut on me like so many others... Destroyed me and it sounds so stupid and petty and "big deal" and it threw me into a hell on Earth... God this is dumb. Why am I writing about this crap.

Today, my day off, I spent a thoroughly enlightened hour or so listening to JP 2016 personality lecture(Piaget to Jung) and then this podcast just popped up. At the boyish age of 60, I felt I was sitting across the table from these boyos, swapping stories in my local pub.. I haven't laughed so heartily in three years and dropped a solid tear on more than one occasion. The conversation and storytelling was so enveloping, colourful and compelling to listen to. JPs early comments on art reminded me of a poem I learnt by heart under the iron fist of the Christian Brothers college education in Ireland ( jokingly referred to in my younger days, as 'the military wing of the Catholic church', due to their fondness of NOT spareing the rod and spoiling the child, LOL ) John Keats poem " Odd to a Grecian Urn". Beauty is truth, truth beauty".. " that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know" Today was a good day, here in lockdown Northern Ireland💜🙏

The only begotten son of Jesus Christ (King David) is reporting for duty. He was a man whose tongue held no lies, For he was the direct descendant of our father in the heavenly skies. Born to a body of fleshy sin, Though what laid beneath was unlike the rest of his kin. Jesus had the utmost grace, Never being wavered by evils face. He was wise beyond any years, Performing miracles that would bring crowds to tears. A beacon of light on top of a starless mountain, Where words of wisdom poured out of him as if there ran a cosmic fountain. His eyes pierced through you with a single glance, Leaving even the most hardened individuals in quite the trance. The Holy Spirit so ever majestically flowed inside this man, Naturally people caught notice and became a fan. Students began showing up from every mold, When they heard his words their hearts were sold. Wicked men put a price on Jesus's head, He was wanted alive or dead. Despite this he and his disciples continued their teachings, Where on occasion they endured terrible beatings. One of the twelve apostles turned to black, No longer having Jesus's back. Judas Iscariot had done Satan's bidding, And it is in hell where he now is sitting. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our shortcoming, However don't be saddened for if you believe in him you will see him at your homecoming. There he sits at the right hand of God's throne, Being the voice of truth and love that we all have known. Satan's tongue is coated in a layer of deceit, And he tramples over promises with his feet. He's a being who is bound by deceptions, Whose very essence oozes with misconceptions. He struggles to look you in your eyes, For his gaze holds nothing but lies. On occasion he will give you his hand, But don't be fooled by his stand. He seeks to corrupt your heart, You would be wise to avoid him from the start. Seeking quick pleasures and casting aside love, He traverses this land with push and shove. Now Lucifer was once not lost, But pride blinded him at a cost. Disobeying God he waged war, Becoming detestable to the core. Today he is the ruler of Earth, Though for all his power he has no real worth. However most of us have still been sold, Giving into sin and becoming cold. Nearly everyone is a puppet dancing on strings, Marching to delusion for their unjust kings. My people have given into lust, Becoming robots full of rust. However you my child are the exception, So when you meet me don't forget to mention. That you alone have been granted the key, And before your glory they shall all bend a knee.

20 years ago my wife, my mother and I were walking through the historic area of Charleston. We were walking past the old episcopal church and could hear the choir rehearsing inside. The transcendent nature of that experience still brings tears to my eyes.

To be fair, modern religion has become it's own enemy. Far too money-obsessed, with gilded halls, rich incense and luxurious robes... while preserving an old structure is worthwhile, the establishment itself is the rotten core that makes it harder to justify.
