This is an educational production I got my hands on in recent times by chance and something I feel inclined to share on here, with full credit to the former WSN Environmental Solutions and creating media company. It looks at waste management in Sydney as it was in the mid-2000s and highlights operational activities that were and still are crucial for the resource recovery and waste disposal sectors. The industry that deals with waste management is massive and very specialised, a lot of what goes on within it is well beyond the knowledge of the average person, and it’s only getting more extensive and sophisticated as time goes by. What you watch in this upload is just the tip of the iceberg and you can actually label some of what is seen as old and outdated methodology!
This video highlights key waste handling processes those various materials from domestic collections are subject to, being just one example of how things have been done in Australia over the years. With a little introduction to sorting out waste at home, this video goes on to cover engineered landfills, organics composting, materials recovery facilities and provides a brilliant overview of an alternative waste treatment technology. The Chullora MRF is featured, which was the biggest and very advanced in its early days, but has since been decommissioned for almost a decade. The Eastern Creek UR-3R AWT facility had only just been opened up at the time of recording and was the next big thing for mixed household rubbish, it continues to operate today, but much has changed in this space.
This was put together when I was just a kid, but something I can appreciate so much more today than I would’ve back then. You can see it was also marketed towards a young audience with the cartoons and narration, which is quite irritating to listen to as an adult, but that Kim character really does my head in! It’s a great insight into how things are done down the line after the collection vehicles empty the bins and take the refuse away, the explanation of each system step along with visual references is excellent for those who have no idea about what occurs. In addition to the general purpose of this production, there are some fantastic sightings of old Sydney garbage trucks throughout. Be sure to watch this in the 720p quality and I hope this is greatly enjoyed!

Nice one Mitch.. you're certainly right about Kim lol. Note the poor Sulo2 at 10:22 :( I think I saw something like this somewhere over a decade ago, very nice time capsule of the trucks from back in the day, especially for the amount displayed in a video aimed at youth education of waste and recycling. Nice save mate

Awesome bring me back memories! From all of this to the Food organics garden organics (Fogo) service nowadays! Mixed recycling is the dumbest way of recycling as at 10:30 is why it is and its pretty common! Streamlined recycling is better and how we should be doing it than mixed recycling as Contamination in mixed recycling is shocking! You also save a lot of room by separating them! Arh an old Concord solo truck thats a 4x2 collecting organic bins what would be now as Canada bay. Probably a garden organics trial That Would've had to have been taken in 2003 or early before cleanaway took over with new bins!

Bloody ripper video from you here. Something diffrent too. Really enjoyed this it was interesting. Loved the old trucks in this video too. I noticed that truck at 3:50. Is that a waste hawk truck or not?

Not Waste Hawk mate, that's a Sutherland Shire Council truck that used to empty the Rapid Rail bins during the 90s, early Chase grab arm side loader on an ACCO.

I’ll admit there were large chunks of this video that I skipped, but always stopped to have a look when a truck was on screen. Spotto @ 3:50, would that be one of the old Sutho Chase trucks? Also cool to see the old Concord truck, and the Camden one too. I liked how the Fairfield DART looked basically new, but already was operating as a commingle vehicle, people weren’t exaggerating when they said it was a streamed service for all of a week. The bit at the end about the UR3R joint was pretty interesting. Is it still operational? I can imagine it would’ve been pretty successful in recycling the metals and glass, but what processor is going to want to buy shit soaked waste paper??? Thanks for throwing this up, makes me wonder if you have any other videos like this hiding away ;))

I imagine you know 1 or 2 things about how waste is handled, so I understand if you jumped through a bit haha You're on the money about the Sutho side loader, maybe one day I'll see the extended version of that clip! That Fairfield recycling truck would have only just been painted gold when Waste Service NSW was rebranded to WSN at the start of 2005, those 4 recyclers were originally white. Yes UR-3R still functions today, Sydney would be absolutely screwed without it, not long ago Cleanaway acquired the place and plan to convert it into a FOGO facility (which is needed). The input is a lot different now, it originally just took waste from councils that had the 2-bin-system, today only Blacktown still delivers that mixed garbage and organics household waste stream, the rest comes from councils with only a garden waste service and transfer stations consolidating commercial wet waste loads. I was looking at the shot of the mixed paper bale and there's nothing about it that screams high quality commodity, somehow I don't think recovery of paper and cardboard continued for long with that resulting product! 🤣💩 You'll be happy to know I'm planning on chucking up more of this stuff for my next few uploads, bit of a break from the regular collections action 😄👍

@@AussieGarbooh so Cleanaway acquired the ur3r from global renewables and are to convert it to a Fogo processor! I thought Veolia took it but nope cleanaway got it! Was that a garden organics trial in Concord before the it became Canada bay with a 3 bin system under cleanaway? I think something like that happened in Parramatta before 2000 with jjs and my nylex was one of the bins rolled out by cleanaway either as a normal garbage bin or a trialed garden organics bin! Veolia has the collection contract for Parramatta and I was ten new Dennis spaks for Fogo! Not sure if all of the services or just one or two bins! Think its all of them including cleanups! Ryde will be either Veolia or Cleanaway

Veolia took over the other parts of Eastern Creek like public drop off, organics processing and of course the truck depot, the UR-3R was owned and operated independently of everything else. Concord had a fortnightly garden waste collection during the Solo contract, the original 240L garbage bins were used for this service when the divided Sulo2s were rolled out for weekly waste and recycling. I think Parra introduced a green waste service in 1999 when it was still the Cleanaway contract, not sure if this was widespread or only provided in certain areas, but come the JJR contract in 2000 it was done council wide.
