I have watched several reviews of Jinjer - Pices. I have played drums, Bass, Guitar and Piano for around 38 years. Listening to you take the time to have actual musical input when you stopped and commented was actually quite different than most others. Your insight to understanding the subtitles within the structure of the song was very well placed. As musicians, I believe it is almost natural to find the faults or deficiencies in other players or bands. Also most people who listen and review almost never have an actual musical foundation on which to base their input. By far, you have presented one of the most informative and factual reviews that I have seen to date. Well done!!

Very kind of you to take the time to share your thoughts on my video. It means a lot, I really appreciate it. I'm not quite at your figure yet, but I've been playing piano for 31 years and drums/guitar for nearly as long even though my drumming has taken a back seat in recent years. I live and breathe music and have also taught piano professionally for nearly 20 years now. It brings me satisfaction to know that some others, like yourself, are enjoying what I'm doing here with my reactions. I love Jinjer reactions by musical professionals. I may have heard the song 100 or more times, but I can still learn something. As others have said, Tatiana has voiced her admiration of Mikael Akerfeldt, and Jinjer's bassist Eugene has many times stated Opeth is his favorite band. However, Tatiana's first inspiration to learn what she calls her 'extreme' vocals came in her mid teens after hearing Otep Shamaya and her band, Otep. She assumed they had two singers, a woman for the cleans and a guy to growl and was shocked when a friend told her the woman is their only vocalist. I find it amusing that Tatiana is now making others think that same thing with her performances. After you've heard a few of their songs though, you'll discover their influences are very diverse and from a number of different genres. In case you've not looked them up, they are from Ukraine, with Tatiana, Eugene, and Roman (guitar) being from Eastern Ukraine, so their first language is Russian. I believe drummer Vlad is from Western Ukraine. All four are fluent in Russian, Ukrainian and English. I believe they have only one song that's entirely in Russian (and also entirely in growls) and one off their last album that has parts in Russian. To my knowledge everything else they've released is in English.

Great reaction, thanks. There's so called "Jinjer rabbit hole" and "Pisces" is not just a song - it's a common entrance to that hole. It's a deep hole. I personally know a lot of reaction channels with dozens of reactions to Jinjer's songs. And that hole is a tricky labyrinth. If you'll move deeper you'll find there lots unexpected things and there's no proper way which song you should choose next. It depends on your personal preferences and Jinjer can satisfy lots of the preferences variations. Musical skills of the band are obvious but I'd like to ask you to pay attention to lyrics of the band. It's really deep, clever and poetic, dispite the fact that English is the third Tatiana's language (the singer and main lyricist of the band). Pisces is a good example of her writing skills. She is a Pisces (today is her birthday actually) and she sings about herself but also about the duality of human nature. I'd say each of her lyrics has a message and it worth to be heard.
@JWSoundworks23 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely looking forward to more from Jinjer. I will definitely delve into the lyrics. My brain always analyses and takes in harmony/melody etc. first by default. It's been like that forever now, I can't help it. But one of the benefits of repeated listening for me is to finally get into the lyrics! 😊🤘

@macthegov3 жыл бұрын
That is the traditional order, but I would suggest doing Teacher Teacher (ov) next...a great mix of the band's talent with a wide range of Tati's skills. Then, go to the Who's Gonna Be the One live to hear Tati growl through most of the song. And then, do the Perennial live at Wacken. The reason I like that order is you get to see a lot of aspects of both the band and Tati's vocals, and then in Perennial, you not only hear some seriously tight musicianship (and Eugene tearing it up), but...how do I say this without giving anything away...lets just say, if you thought Tatiana was amazing up til this point, just wait. And, then do the Judgement and Punishment one-take, cuz it's just so cool.

Excellent reaction and analysis of the band. There’s so much to unpack with this group’s music. “Teacher Teacher “, “I Speak Astronomy”, “Perennial-live at Wacken”, and “Who’s Gonna Be The One “, are usually the next songs people suggest; “Outlander”, “Cloud Factory”, and “Words of Wisdom” are some of their older stuff. “The Prophecy” and “Home Back” are their newest releases so far; and there are so many excellent songs in between. “Retrospection-live Kiev”, “Captain Clock- Resurrectionfest “, “Judgement and Punishment (both the one take vocal and official)”, “Ape”, “Pit of Consciousness -live Kiev”, “On The Top”, “ Sit, Stay, Roll Over”..... the list goes on and on. I haven’t found a bad Jinjer song yet.

I fell down the Jinjer rabbit hole a couple years ago. I was always averse to growling in vocals. Avatar was the first band that got me to actually listen to that style, and Jinjer sealed the deal. Eugene (the bass player) has done a number of Zoom interviews with reaction channels - The Music Shed did a GREAT three part interview that is well worth checking out. I messaged Eugene on Facebook after that interview and asked him for a good starting point if I wanted to check out Opeth, and he immediately said "Deliverance." Through that recommendation, I also listened to "Damnation" and now I'm a fan of Opeth too! There is also a great video of Eugene and Roman (the guitarist) playing Pisces with just the drum accompaniment (no vocals) - so you will be able to see what you are identifying as the keyboard is actually just Eugene's two-handed tapping technique. Cheers, and welcome to the Jinjer Army!

So what you were perceiving as a keyboard part was Roman doing a backing track on guitar. Jinjer used to be a bigger band, with a second guitar player. When they went down to a three-piece (plus vocals) they still had to play their older stuff, including Pisces, so they use backing tracks on Vlad's laptop. Since they do that anyway, they are thus not shy about using extra compositional elements in their songs, both studio versions and live as well. And of course, this has _tons_ of extra production on it, including doubled vocal tracks in many places.

I've commented on it many times in various reaction videos and in the video itself, and I finally see someone who knows about music say the same thing I said. They have a brutal influence from Opeth, at least in this song (and in others, but especially in this one), completely latent. The structure, the guitar modulations and melodies, the drums full of ghostnotes, Martin Mendez's bass doing those taps and sustains and of course, Tatiana's voice changes are nailed to Mikael's...they are very good, but you can see perfectly where they suckled from. Which on the other hand is perfectly normal in the creative process. Have references. Great Reaction.

Without it ever being the intent, Picses has become sort of a portal into the bands catalogue. It was recorded to show off the drummer Vlad, who plays it quite differently from the drummer he replaced. I am sure you will get a lot of requests, but I have always agreed with most other people that Perennial live at Wacken Open Air is a good 2nd song to do. After that you can pick pretty much anything, since all their songs are good, some are even better live than the record version, imho. You won't get any prog length songs, even though I pretty much put them in the prog genre of metal, or at least very close. I think "I speak Astronomy" is one of their longest. The official video of that one is great, and that's recorded with Dimitriy Kim who was their 4th drummer. Vlad is their 5th, but the one who's stayed for the longest period of time, since 2016. Loved your reaction and all the comments, subbed.

Some super info there, thank you. I will definitely be doing a second reaction of this band and want to look more into them for real, for my own pleasure. Thanks for suggestions and glad you enjoyed! 🤘

It was Otep who got Tatiana into screaming, not Opeth. ; )

@@JWSoundworks2 thanks for the reply. They are definitely worth checking out. I first learned about them in 2017. I've really enjoyed the reactions to their songs on the various channels over the years. Lots of fun to see what people have to say. 👍

Yes, there is a traditional order, and her vocal performance with Perennial live is insane. That being said, I didn't care for their newest album (Macro) when it first came out. Now, I can't get enough. The live in Kiev versions of Pit of Consciousness and On the Top show their polish and incredible talent live, and Cloud Factory live shows the band right after Vlad joined and Tati was on another level. Good Luck!

First watch, new subscriber here. I watch Jinjer reactions to watch faces twist up. I like the way you break things down and almost felt bad when she mutated. Yes, your face twisted up with righteous appreciation. Good stuff.

I watched serveral reviews of pisces but you're the only one so far that would announced the "influence" of opeth that's exactly the same that i tought when i hear this song for the first time....good job as everytime👍🏻

I know that this is old. I love Jinjer. It made me so happy that you heard Opeth undertones & you named 1 of my favorite songs & favorite album by them. I heard Opeth the 1st time I ever heard this song. I had a huge Opeth phase it was the only thing I listened to for awhile. GHOST REVERIES...YES!!!

Nice spot about the Opeth influence. Tati has said in a recent interview that Opeth was the band that made her want to do growls when she was in high school, afaik, she recently hit her 30s, so there's for sure early Opeth in Tati's vocals.
@JWSoundworks23 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Early Opeth is where it's at! Everything upto Blackwater Park is sheer perfection to me, still love their stuff afterwards too, but those were their golden years, imo. 🤘

Welcome! This is a great start. But there is so much more to Jinjer. Teacher, teacher (official), Who's Gonna be the One (Live), Perennial (Live), Introspection (official), and Home Back (official) are all top tier. You really can't go wrong with Jinjer. One of the best things...to me..is that the sound as good Live as they do in official music videos. Some bands live either take off on a tangent or just don't produce the same quality. Jinjer does - consistently. ------------------ Another suggestion I would make is to check out the lyrics too. There's deep levels of thought in this stuff. This is where a 10 outshines a 9....the complete production.
@JWSoundworks23 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The quality throughout is really apparent here. Incredible stuff. Good call on the lyrics, too. They're usually a secondary or even tertiary thing for me as a musician. But I will definitely look into them on repeated listens. 🤘

Yesss I am enjoying your reactions, love your facial expressions, they remind me of Rinus Gerritsen, (can't imagine you not knowing him for he's been around for over 5 decades, but just in case, bassplayer of The Golden Earring). The guitarist is playing a modified A minor chord 1 octave higher, while droning the open A string. But, the bassist is using tapping techniques to capture the lower octave the guitarist is missing. This is how they achieve that piano sound.

You need to see them live there's a lot of live videos of Jinjer. Live in Melbourne and live in kiev are the most popular ones this band is special next level stuff enjoy the jinjer rabbit hole. They infuse many different types of music into their sound and it all works well. Older jinjer is more metal core than the newer stuff. This band brought me back to metal after a hiatus exploring other music. Glad to see you enjoying one of my favorite bands. The line up has changed a few times but Tatiana The singer Eugene the bassest and Roman the guitarist have been the core of the band for the last few years. This video was made to show off Vlad's drumming style. Side note Vlad is a classically trained peanist as well . Peace from Stan the Alaskan. Just subbed 😁.
