Two interesting things that Bret Hart mentioned about this show in his autobiography: 1. Supposedly Bruce Hart was supposed to join the Hart Foundation to be their guy to compete in the light heavyweight division. But he stiffed our old pal, Stone Cold during a their scuffle and that put the kaibosh on that. 2. Bret Hart noticed some random kid came into the ring during the post match celebration. When Bret asked him what he was doing there, the kid just said "I told security that I was a Hart and they let me through". To which Bret advised the kid to soak up the adulation the crowd was showing to everyone in the ring.

Trivia note: The guy with the smarky-ass signs (including "This is Workrate") was actually Scott Keith's roommate at the time, and since Scott couldn't go to the show, the two of them spent all week before the show coming up with what they considered the "ultimate smark signs" to try and get on TV.

Back in Germany, Bret Hart was considered the first wrestler who "was heel in the USA and face anywhere else." The German commentators called him like a face and called Austin like a heel ...
@alanguages
@alanguages 4 жыл бұрын
Bret was a face worldwide, except the U.S.A., even though Austin did not change and continued to do heel tactics. The commentators like Vince and co. implied that the entire world was wrong and only America was right. Kurt Angle was booed in the U.S.A. when he first came in and was a guy that followed the rules and promoted a positive lifestyle.
@theonofswords3764
@theonofswords3764 3 жыл бұрын
It was strange to see how fans in the USA slowly stopped cheering Bret. Perhaps it was because he performed there most of the time and was overexposed. In Europe and Canada was probably the most beloved and respected champion the wwe ever had. You can see in wrestling with shadows that the real Bret didn’t like being booed in america. It clearly hurt him on a personal level
@jp3813
@jp3813 3 жыл бұрын
@@theonofswords3764 It was deliberate. They built up his heel turn at WM13. If you watch Royal Rumble '97, which has recently been uploaded by WWE's channel, he was still getting cheered even in Austin's home state.

15:34 In order for the move to be set up, the person who is taking the move HAS to grab the leg so that the person applying the move can safely lower themselves to the floor. I get heat every time I bring this up but in the infamous match with Goldberg, he failed to hold Hart's leg and Bret slammed his head on the floor causing his concussion (as opposed to the kick). So even though it doesn't quite seem like it on the surface, it is actually a fairly dangerous move.
@BungleJoogie68
@BungleJoogie68 6 жыл бұрын
Junior Sanchez the padding is meant to absorb some of the pain, but even still taking a blow to the head under any level of padding can still cause the brain to rattle to some degree, and the real danger of concussion injuries isn't just actual concussions but subconcussive blows that add up. The only possible way to essentially prevent a concussion is a helmet around the brain inside of the skull.

I was there and after the event outside, there were about eight guys wearing Austin 3: 16 shirts, that blocked a vehicle from getting out. My brother and I heard a voice tell the guys to get lost with two expletive words. My brother used the binoculars and saw it was Hawk. The eight guys moved, but apparently they were just being jerks, and must have really wanted the attention.

I see your point. The crowd reaction for Austin at this event and his actions electrified this match. Bret was what made wwe so good in 1997. The fallen idol. Austin was the perfect foil for him though. Bret was so loved in Calgary but Austin was the fearless anti hero. The last time he came to the ring and attacked anvil was hilarious and almost inspiring in how fearless he was. Anyone who hated Bret loved Austin and vice versa. Wonderful story telling. Funny thing, I watched this PPV live with my friends (Had just gotten the internet so I was still a 99% mark at the time). We thought it was one of the WORST PPV's we had ever seen. Basically nothing got advanced (We didn't care about star ratings at all). All we saw was: 1 - HHH/Mankind was a double count out, just a setup for SummerSlam. nothing was settled 2- The Japanese guy that they hyped huge beat the Japanese guy they barely mentioned at all. SHOCKING!! 3- Taker OF COURSE beats Vader rather easily. (We were more intrigued in Ahmed/Taker, but he sadly got injured). 4- While the crowd was crazy, this rather meaningless 10 man tag ended with a DISTRACTION ROLL UP... when Austin lost not to Bret, but to OWEN. Just looked like a total fluke that settled NOTHING. Funny how we thought back then. :)

I'm not a fan of the in the your houses (did a review of em a while back) but this one, Mind Games and great white north all hold a special place in my heart ( was in the crowd for great night north and got to see Goldusts debut). Fully agree with the matches all were amazing. Us Canadian fans are a special breed, we take a lot of pride in our sports teams and local celebs. With that I'm beyond proud to be a Winnipegger today in regards to last nights NJPW show. Getting to see Kenny Omega grow as a local wrestler to where he is now and even watching Jericho wrestle when I was a child here made it even more sweet. this is partly why the Screwjob was so distasteful. When Bret asked to drop the belt the next day, he was saying that because the Canadian fans were completely in love with him at the time. When the Screwjob happened, it was also a kick in the nuts for all the people that loved Bret. Whenever I hear talking heads in a WWE documentary saying "I can't believe Bret is so selfish not to drop it" or "just drop it, it's just another work day" it's honestly WWE history revisionism trying to ignore the fact that the Screwjob made Bret look stupid infront of people that revered him. Vince knew that, and he made sure that point stuck. And it did, that's why a lot of Bret supporters jumped ship and the sting is still felt to this day.

Let's not forget the fact that the WWE rubs in their face all the time. I remember Beniot getting a Screwjob in front of a canadian crowd. Vince just needs to let it go. Sometimes, I think Vince hated the fact that the Hart family is considered the first family in wrestling... and not the McMahons

Put yourself in Vince's shoes. WCW is winning you in an overwhelming way. Alundra Blayze, a wrestler who you confided to be the face of your female division betrays you and literally throws the title in the trash during a WCW show. Now, the contract of your world champion is about to end and he still has the title, the WWF Championship would not recover from a humiliation like that if it goes through a similar situation. Vince wanted the best for his company reputation, Bret did not listen and things ended worse for both sides.

I honestly believe it was a work. I was about 9 years old at the time though, and was already a huge NWO mark. Bret and Shawn were my favorite wrestlers, and not long after Bret left, Shawn retired after losing the strap to Austin. I became a huge WCW mark after that...
@deathmetal11111
@deathmetal11111 5 жыл бұрын
Let's put it into context though. Bret's home town is Calgary, not Montreal. If you're going to say Montreal is his hometown you might as well say New York is Shawn Michael's hometown too. Your hometown can't be a whole freaking country. If we go by that method, no baby face will ever lose their championship, ever. It's not like Bret was gone, gone. He could have laid down and came back to Montreal showing his fistfulls of WCW cash six months later to make everyone feel better if that's what it took.

@@futuregohan4837 it surprises you that the wrestler everyone constantly mentions as stable and the most even keeled wrestler ever is alive? This is the most bizarre comment I've seen in a wrestling thread... Why Undertaker? Is he your favorite? Lol wtf

This is the PPV that got me into wrestling, I got the tape second hand at a car boot sale for about £5 and was hooked, watched my first RAW that week which was the one where Stone Cold filled McMahon's Corvette with cement and I'm still hooked to this day.

I'm on a binge with all of your reviews, even though I've seen them all before. This one is actually the first A+ classic PPV on your record. (Closest you had before this was the A for WM X-7.) Admittedly surprised that the first would be here, but still cool.

I went and watched the Taka Michinoku / Great Sasuke match after the recommendation. I was amazed. Everytime I'd seen Taka in WWF/E, he was always treated as a joke. I didn't think anything more of him than that. Even growing up, I'd been partial to the in-ring work over the promos and antics. WWE/F during that era generally wasn't about the in-ring matches barring a few notable exceptions. WCW became my preference due to the cruiserweights and guys like DDP who worked to put on a good match. And due to a mild annoyance with the Attitude Eras matches, I rarely go out and watch the old ones (except for things like the St. Valentines Day Massacre's Last Man Standing match or a few other key matches). This was great even by todays standards. It looked good, it looked fluid while still looking like a struggle (a talent lost for a lot of performers nowadays). It was really good to see him get acknowledged seriously. Thanks for the recommendation!

1 of my favourite pay-per-views of all time. I remember staying up 2 watch this live. Perfect. The Bret/Austin fued was 1 of the things that got me back watching the WWF full time, as I had been heavily in2 WCW since 1990. So sad what happened 2 the Hart family. The very essence of what made them was the very same thing that broke them.

1997 is one of if not my favourite year in the WWE. They started bringing in more reality based things into the product like going into Mankinds back story and the stuff they were doing with Goldust and even Paul Bearer became more realistic. but at the same time they still kept larger than life characters which I think is part of the best thing in wrestling entertainment. They started introducing this aspect in 1996 with things like the Jerry Lawler vs Jack the snake alcoholism story line. This was something good Russo did for the show if he indeed had that input.

My stepdad was soo awesome growing up. Even tho he had a pool for MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, eyes are tearing up. He still would let us watch RAW and switch to the commercials from about 96' to 00'. But its sweet bc during the early days of cable, we only had 1 tv with the box. Just a great memory and im just realizing it now watching this episode.

I don't think you'll find a better show with only 4 matches on the card. I know most of their talent was in the 10-man tag or injured or otherwise unavailable, and they didn't have too much roster depth to begin with in 1997, but they really made the most of what they had here. A+ show all the way.

One example of the one off wrestlers as an example of the taka and sasuke match was the 1997 royal rumble the roster was so thin they needed to hire one off wrestlers to pad the rumble out and one of them was the legendary man of 1000 masks mil mascaras.
