I have the X-55 which, like the X-56, had some of these same issues. It is good to see that they have offered a solution to the palm rest on the stick, although it does seem like an afterthought. As for some of the problems you mentioned, these were my solutions: 1. The stick height. I got a black foam floor mat of the type that are used as play mats for children and cut a section out with a craft knife to fit properly. It is a nice soft rest for the hand that shapes to your hand over time. 2. The seam on the throttle. I rubbed it with a dark coloured candle to fill the seam with wax. Then rubbed the excess away with a soft cloth. That seam is now smooth and does not bother me at all. In hindsight I think I should have used a green candle to match the lights on the throttle itself... 3. The movement between the two throttle halves. I came to this later than the stick height issue, and couldn't find the matting that I had used before, or I would have used that. Instead I cut a section to fit from a Jiffy bag and placed that between the two. It looks a bit ugly, but until I find the matting it is a temporary fix that stops that wobble. 4. The ghosting issues. There are two potential issues here. One is that I had to put the throttle on a powered USB hub and the problem was solved initially. The second issue, which came to light after a lot of play time and after the warranty had expired, is that the wiring inside the throttle and stick is very cheap. The wire itself is very thin and the sleeve gets brittle leading to the wiring becoming bare at points (and even breaking) where they are fed through gaps in the casing. I overcame this by taking both apart and replacing all the internal wires with a better quality wire. If you are comfortable using a soldering iron then this could breath new life into your old gear, but make sure to use wiring that is not too thick or you may cause wear and tear at the point it goes through the internal casing. I find my old X-55 is now more comfortable than ever before and with the exception of a trigger button issue which has just recently occurred it is functioning well after 3 years of some pretty heavy use. I hope this helps you, or someone else out with these issues. One final point. Don't be afraid to change your button layout from time to time. Initially it might feel wrong, but by doing this I have found some changes to be far better than the previous setup that I had used. I mention this because you said about the buttons on the throttle handle being set up the way they are because that is how you used them on your previous model. Everyone has their own preferences on how to program the buttons, but trying new configurations on a cheap ship like the Sidewinder which is cheap to replace in game if you screw up can lead to some revelations that will improve your enjoyment of both the HOTAS and the game. Have fun out in there in the black, CMDR! o7

This was really the most in-depth review of the X-56. I have the X-55 and is fairly happy with it except for a couple of issues. On the joystick I have lost the downward tactile feel on the bottom right hat switch. It is still useable, but you need to give it quite a hard downward push to move the onscreen cursor otherwise it will make two jumps - there is no more tactile feel. The other three movements also are losing the tactile feel, but is still quite OK for now. The reason why this issue occured, I used that hatswitch to move the cursor in the materials menu (mostly down) instead of using the mouse, but again, I setup the system as NOT to use the keyboard or mouse. If I can find where top get the swith, I'd rather replace it than paying big bucks for another set. The other issue was the throttle. You mention in the beginning out of the box it was quite stiff and you are quite correct. Eventually it loosen up with the never-ending use in fights and travel in the SRV. Eventually I started to "lose" the on-throttle controls functions. After a search I found that the wires is starting to break on the inside of the throttle box. I had it fixed by a electronics and instrument boff and here is my verdict and recommendation. There is a clear goo (not the silicone grease) inbetween the throttle slider mechanism which makes the dampening effect of the throttle quite effective. Unfortunately there was too much goo and got stuck to the wires coming from the throttle to the PCB's. Instead of the wires of the on-throttle controls "rolling" with movement, the wires bent with throttle movement and eventually causes it to break. I cleaned out all the goo (I used acetone to clean my hands but do not use it on the plastic parts - it disolves the plastic) and only applied silicone grease to the mechanism. The throttle is quite light now and trying to use the "brake" on the side, I realized that was a sort of useless component - still need to figure it out how to fix that. I am about to purchase a new X-56 (hence me watching this review) but I will open up the bottom and remove as much goo as possible, unless they have another way to dampen the throttle. I had a look at the Thrustmaster stick only for its durability, but it does not have the twist functionality which in my eyes is needed for the SRV and dogfighting - rudder pedals (which I have) does not work for Elite - there is way too much twists and turns and the throttle is very busy. My 2 cents.

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO DEVELOP A LIGHT TOUCH WITH THIS HOTAS I honestly love the design of it, I think for elite dangerous it's the best controller around. But due to rough handling I ended up breaking the yaw spring after two-and-a-half years of on-and-off usage. Luckily I had an old X-55 I was already salvaging for parts, so I opened it up no problem and fixed it. Then I learned to develop a lighter touch while handling it, and found that actually helped me improve my skills as well. The two mini-joysticks can have immense utility if you can handle them with enough precision and sensitivity. Just make sure you calibrate all your axes correctly when you first get it, and again once in a while also doesn't hurt. Also I don't understand the size complaints. I have short fingers and I don't have any problems using this HOTAS, and I dont even use that little height stand clip-on thing either.

I started with the X52 loved it, till it broke. I switched to the X55 and loved it, till it broke. I then got the warthog. As soon as UPS dropped it off and I picked up the box I understood why it cost more. the stick and throttle are metal rugged and heavy. I have logged over 1500 hours on this stick, and it still feels like new. Plus if some one breaks into my house I can beat them to death with the stick, that's how heavy it is. Down side is the loss of yaw. I got a MFG Crosswind for that, and I love my set up now.

sadly it's incompatible in VR because most of the switch are not on what you actually grip. the TM warthog is really bad if you use VR due to how you must "search" for the button blindly when the X52 have easely 3 buton for 6 switch at the base of the joystick and that's it

I had a similar unplug problem with my old x52. My computer would not freeze but it would start flickering (sound and video) really badly. I bashed my head against the keyboard for MONTHS before i discovered BY PURE CHANCE that a totally unrelated BIOS update had fixed the problem. I thought that finally, with logitech's leadership, drivers would have not been a problem anymore but unfortunately doesn't look like that. Great video thought!
@usoppbarbosa9817 жыл бұрын
For the force required to move the throttle, it's due to the goo they use to lubricate the thing. it has the consistency of pine resin, maybe even more thick and sticky. So when you first try to move it it's hard as f***. then it losens up. I personally cleaned it all up and put a regular grease. Now fast throttle changes are easy, and it's still not too floppy. One thing i'd recommend is to grease the spring plate that rubs on the base of the joystick. after a few hours, this will start to impede joystick movement. greasing solves it. On the throttle, i also stopped using the toggles. i kept bumping on htem all the tipe, opening maps and tossing heat sinks everywhere :) As for the sotftware bugs, i've never had any issue. It sometimes happened that i knocked my USB hub unplugged WHILE playing Elite. Just plug it back and back in business. Seems like you have another issue with your USB ports maybe?

Hey d2ea I got the x56 about a month ago, and i have to unplug it daily. I have never had the pc freeze doing that, im sorry to say that it not a driver issue. do you have the throttle and joystick plugged into the same usb line on the motherboard it could be a sudden power surge that is causing you the problem.

Owned the X56 for some time, the only issue with the USB is when I would use the USB 3.0 connection. But it may have been my front connections as i have never really known an issue when plugged in the back directly to the motherboard.
@usoppbarbosa9817 жыл бұрын
This HOTAS (both modules individually) do take a lot of power. I had rare disconnections when plugging them straight to the PC. It could be down to your particular motherboard USB power supplies. Since i plug it to a powered USB3 hub, i have had no issues. Same goes for the X52 that had the same problem.

Thanks for the review! I just got one and have to say that the ergonomics of the stick fit my hands pretty well, although I don’t think I have very wide hands. If I put my thumb between the hat switches it’s a few millimeters below the blue button. I tried the addon piece but with that I got a crampy thumb for having to reach around too much. I think the hat switches could be a bit less sticking out. I love the thumb analog sticks on the stick and throttle for all the thrusting, makes it very easy for docking or flying out of a station without having to use the throttle. I did try the software but it crashed multiple times when selecting a curvature profile at the settings. So I deinstalled it and set the deadzones in elite which works pretty well. Only had to adjust a little to have everything on 0. The throttle is stiff, but as you said, your ship won’t accelerate any faster when you would be able to move it faster, so it kindof makes you more aware of how fast you go.
@preferredimage7 жыл бұрын
The X-55 had all the same issues. I use the two hats on the throttle for the various thruster directions. great for landing pad alignment. You can open the throttle and scoop out some of the goop they use as a tensioner which helps keep its cold tension less.

Why would you want the stick to move in a circle!? Being in a square means that when you push or pull the stick full forward/backward, you get 100% pitch; and when it's full left/right, 100% roll. If it were a circle, either you can't get 100% pitch AND roll at once, or the stick's drivers need to distort the inputs to achieve that, reducing precision and predictability in operating the stick.

I did buy the x-56 and been using this now for almost 5 months without issues. At first setting this up took quite a bit of patience, specially the deadzones for the little thumbsticks that I use for thrusters. But they only took a little bit of deadzone to work perfectly. The throttle stiffness also got waaay better since a month actually, theres a lot more difference between lightest and heaviest setting and now I can move it with ease. When I got the hotas it was also very stiff, but I got used to it. The length of the stick is quite ok for me. I don’t think I have very wide hands, but I use it without the riser plate. I tried it for a bit but then my thumb started complaining because I had to reach back and up to get to the buttons. Maybe it they put the top controls a bit more to the back it would be more comfortable. I have no regrets buying this stick.

You sure picked an unlucky time to purchase the X56 :D Just a short while ago Logitech released a reworked version of it which supposedly fixed all the issues caused by Saitek. Fixes include (but are not limited to): -)An improved manufacturing method for the spring on the twist axis to prevent early wear and improve centering of the twist -)Tooling updates to further assist with the centering of the twist (plus fit and finish improvements elsewhere) -)A new wiring harness for the twist axis in the stick and improved soldering process that prevents twist axis failures -)A new look for the X56 which should make those of you who expressed their dislike for the blue very happy indeed In order to make telling the versions apart easier, logitech replaced the blue patterns with grey ones. How much better the new version is... Well, It's something, I suppose. Since the release was in February, I'd recommend waiting a few months till the first reviews on the product's longevity trickle in. If hardly anyone complains about it's quality and longevity by September, I'd say it's a safe bet that the product is a safe bet to buy.

That's the one I recently got. They only have a few of the markings remaining and only on the base of the two units. The ghosting issue still exists too, but it turns out it's that the throttle unit is very power hungry and you'll need a powered USB hub to run it. Other than that, my giant monkey hands have no issues with any of the thumbsticks being crowded, but the joystick palm rest is still way too low, along with the pinky button still being half covered. Biggest issue I have is that the left twist for yaw is super squeaky. Functions fine though.

Well technically it is just a normal X56 with improved internals, so no point in naming it X-57 or something. Though logically speaking, a successor model may very well already be in development right now. All you really need to do is to take the X52 pro and do the following with it: 1)Keep the stick and throttle design as it is. Seriously, the design is quite ergonomic and there ain't really that much of a need for seperate-able throttle anyway. 2) Add a thumbstick to the stick 3) Extend the mouse control stick a bit and make it less sensitive 4) Give the throttle base loads of buttons and switches (and maybe a betal base plate to make it heavier) This would allow Logitech to whip out a replacement pretty quickly since most of the design work has already been done by Saitek, saving LOTS of time and money on R&D. And noone's really gonna miss the miss the extra buttons anyway since you can use the pinky switch as an instant mode changer

Joystick yeah, it's great for flying and driving but fighting with it is very difficult, not being able to reach top bottom for secondary fire. I ended up remapping secondary to pinky trigger. Oh and I kept on accidentally pushing that little pinky button at the base so I disabled it. Little joysticks are joy (pun intended) to use with Galaxy map and for controlling external cameras. Having used the X-56 for about a year. I can say that on the positive side I really like this setup. it's very comfertable to use over time as it has an extender on the base of the stick that you can rest your hands on. All the switches exept the slider on the throttle is well placed and easy to configure. After a few days of use you will have to give it some grease to keep it smooth handling. I used some sillicone based gun grease on the stick part and it worked just fine. The negative side here and that's the only negative I can find is build quality on the throttle. I've had both the X-55 and X-56 and both will after some time have ghost buttons issues. I have no idea why , but after 10-11 months use at the most the buttons on the throttle will activate randomly and this is totally unacceptable. There is a guarantee aginst this so the store will accept this, but it's very annoying.

I have been using this joystick about 6-8 months now I had these ghost issues as well. I did a lot of research and a lot of messing around with the ports and I came to the conclusion that you must use USB 3 powered ports (USB 2 will not work properly). I did come across a problem where one of the powered USB 3 ports caused ghosting as well so I moved it to a different USB 3 powered port and all was well again. I have come across a much worse problem though which I do not seem to be able to resolve and that is that it loses its calibration settings and very occasionally when i take off from the space dock I end up in a spin cycle. I have to quit the game before I crash, go into the settings and recalibrate the throttle stick. Overall I find the experience of this joystick painful but well worth it if you know how to fix it.

I have used this for a year and a half now. Each time it breaks, 3 times so far, I try to find a different hotas of better quality - but there is just nothing that has enough buttons. And I just can't fly without the rotating stick and the thumb mini joysticks. I hope that someday there will be a hotas like this, just better quality. Higher price, I don't mind, it's worth it. Currently, waiting for a replacement again, I play mouse/KB. Works ok, aiming with mouse is MUCH easier with the mouse. But *immersion* ... with the X-56 I actually feel like a pilot, not so much with mouse/KB. EDIT: DtEA criticises button placements - I have no issues with those. I find all of the buttons and controls well placed, easy to reach and rarely touch a wrong one. Hitting the right buttons on the KB, I find much more difficult. Harder to memorize, and harder to get it right in more stressful situations. Unplugging causing PC to freeze: Never happened to me. Ghosting: I use a powered USB thing, no problems. BUT: My second X-56 had bad ghosting and I sent it back right away - hardware issue.

The issue with plugging it in, and unplugging it causing a hard-lock or a major issue requiring a reboot sounds alike an issue with your USB card. This device is USB 2.0 - use a 2.0 port. Also, do not use a hub, they do require the standard power and a hub splits it up and doesn't provide enough. Also, reinstall the driver for the USB Card and make sure you are using the right one and up to date. If the one from the manufacturer is the one with the issue, see if MS has one.

I use the Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS, and it works great. Superb precision on the stick. And the throttle even have it's own "mini" stick. Oh, and I use it on my PS4..

I changed the position of the hats on the stick because they are so awkward. Also, I use one hat for up / down and left / right movement. The thumb joystick is really bad. I am thinking of replacing it with a button when I buy a 3D printer. The pinky button is also really bad. I can't use the riser because it blocks the button. The other hat switches on the joystick get in the way and I can't recall what I bound them to - it has been a while since I was able to get into ED. I think the joystick would've been better if 2 hats were replaced with 4 to 8 buttons each. They could've been placed in such a way that were easy to access, and more along the side where the thumb is and maybe one per finger wrapped around although that could be awkward too... Either way, I will probably make my own handle if I stick around long enough.

I've got an x56 coming and I have a constellation alpha r on order. My plan is to use the throttle from the x56 with the virpil constellation alpha r. I'd probably prefer to spend the money on the virpil throttle.. But at this point Im just not willing to wait another 8 weeks for it to show up.

I've been getting into Elite recently and I'm now DESPERATELY looking for a Logitech X-56 HOTAS... but thanks to the recent release of MS Flight sim, EVERYONE is out of stock! There are a couple of places that still have it in stock but they want DOUBLE the $250 price for it, which is something I simply can't afford as a single parent. The original $250 tag was steep enough.

My experience with the X-56 Rhino stick has been wonderful... The throttle, not so much. I also have fairly large hands and sausage fingers. The handrest, while more or less correct for height, makes the pinky button a little problematic. The secondary fire button could also stand to be either 5mm taller or located on the thumb side of the POV hat. My fat fingers makes arching my thumb over the POV feel a bit unnatural. Otherwise I'm very happy with it. I have it configured with the log curve mapping for the motion axes which provides very delicate small movements with quick response for gross maneuvering. My criticism of the throttle portion is that the buttons exhibited cross-talk, making several of the buttons absolutely unusable. Triggering some of the buttons, however carefully, could produce the results of two differently mapped buttons. I was able to confirm this by remapping the action of the buttons that were "leaking" such that the second action changed. In other words... When deploying the landing gear, it could sometimes decide that it was supposed to go "silent running." This caused me some serious problems because it was totally unexpected. By changing the button set up for silent running to launch a heat sink instead, deploying the landing gear then sometimes launched a heat sink. Several buttons on the throttle were involved. The switches on the base didn't appear to be affected. I posted a review explaining this and the review was removed with a claim that I had made some sort of extortion demand... Not only is this HOTAS marginal for some of its ergonomics but the electronics leak internally and the manufacturer was willing to resort to dishonest shenanigans to avoid criticism. If the throttle worked as well as the stick, i'd be completely enthusiastic about this set. What they've managed to do is make me completely unwilling to spend another dime with them. I'm currently considering the TM Warthog and Virpil T-50 Throttle controls (which are extremely expensive). I'll probably replace the Saitek stick as well. It works fine but I'm rather disgusted with their deletion of my Amazon review.

I've used the Rhino X-55 since it came out for all my flight sims for years. When I got Elite it was a little 'busy' but, honestly, I've taken care of my equipment and NEVER had a single issue. Don't know if people use their equipment as a backstop, or what, but at some point, I wonder how much care is actually taken with equipment. I am passing on the X-56 right now because I am not a fan of some of the button style changes they have made to the joystick, especially. I know my X-55 is going to go south 1 day and I am trying to get ahead of that. I use Voice Attack now for nearly everything and honestly, lol, can't remember half the key bindings anymore. So, for a general HOTAS, I like the feel of the X-55.

My comments if I may for others looking for a HOTAS setup even though this video is 2 years old. Just got the x56. Utter junk it is. I opened up the throttle to remove most of that sticky stuff they smeared all over the slider mechanism inside. That loosened it up by quite a bit. Even better would be a more suitable lubrication for dampening if you can find one. The yaw axis (twist action) though on the stick is way too stiff and will cause serious long term injuries to your shoulder and hand. I am just recovering from Mouse Shoulder, and trust me, it is not fun. I am still suffering from nerve damage. That spring is inside the stick mechanism and is not replaceble in case you wondered. This product is not up to the same quality as other Logitech products, so buyer beware. I am about to order a Virpil stick as my physical health is way more important than the expense, and long term physio fees will outstrip by far the expense of a proper quality setup.

Do some searches on X55/X56 "Throttle" Ghosting issues with random button presses. Its a gamble if you get a working unit. I have been plagued with the problem, none of the fixes on the net work. Apparently the issue is with the way the wire harness is in the throttle.
@NULUSIOS7 жыл бұрын
BTW you really really get used to the two tiny hats and the throttle analog stick without pushing anything by mistake. I use the stick for the 4 thrusters, one hat for changing distributor balance and the other erm... don't remember because I don't have it min my hand now (so that hand-memory takes over).

I have had the X56 for a couple of years now. IMO its the best stick for ED due to the thumb sticks for verticle/horizontal thrusters. However I have heard the build quality is terrible and I had my 1st issue after about 11 months. A spring inside snapped and the twist of the stick was broken. Took it back and they fixed it (didnt replace it) but since then I have to have a big dead zone for the twist as its no longer centred. The software is terrible and it losses its calibration anywhere from monthly to daily.

Got one as soon as I had learned my way around and still love it after 500 (ish) hours of flying. I guess one can do better in combat, especially PvP, with M&K but i'm not very interested in that aspect of the game. Addendum: I never used the crappy software at all, ED provides settings options on it's own well enough.

The worst thing about the x56, is it feels even cheaper than the x52. It’s a quick fix by Logitech after the purchase of Saitek, an x55 v2.0 if you will. Also, Even with the riser plate the stick is still obnoxiously large.

I just got one and agree with everything you said.. except ive had no software crashes... but im using windows 7.. also the hat switches on the throttle are just very bad. I did find a use for them though, one for managing pips (up system, forward engines, down weapons and towards as balance). The other one i use for fixed throttle increments 0, 25, 75 and 100 for emergency / combat use. Its a shame they are just bad quality, for something so expensive thats wrong.

Hi just watched you video, i have the X52 pro before that i had the x52.. Before that i had and still have 2 Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold sticks, But as much as i love the sticks/hotas from Saitek, they always suffer from same problems, 1 is driver's support, it seems too take ages for Saitek too get a good drive too work 100% and 2 something will break quite quickly both the Cyborg sticks have the throttle switch broken. The X52 in less than a year i had to send it back because the throttle became very hard to move then became very slack to move, even though that wasn't a big issue for me. The stick itself became very slack, it wouldn't stand straight. So less than a year ago i had to send it off to get repaired, Saitek to be honest was great with customer support but now just over 2 years use the twist grip as gone, a common problem i have since found out. BUT i have managed to do a repair and its workable... Also to comment on you video you say you have issues with the hotas if its not left plugged in while you boot up??? DO YOU HAVE Z170 CHIPSET BY CHANCE???

I just can't like the X-56. The ergoonomics are just horrible. You can't reach both analog-sticks or you lose reach of everything else. The stick is way too thick so you can't get a good grip or if you manage to get a good grip you'll lose reach of most of the stuff you want to use. The throttle is'nt better... Beside the strange "slow-movements"... all usefull sticks (esp. the analog-stick) are out of position. They should of been 2-3 cm higher there the useless wheels are. Why is there like no inputs on the front of the throttle? The TWSC-throttle shows how it should have been done. So it was send back after 2weeks testing.

Interesting video ... I personally used 3 X52 and 2 X55, every single one failed while under warranty (Saïtek replaced them without question, too bad the replacement failed too, some under 3 months !). I did not try the X56. I decided to stop buying / support replacing my HOTAS and bought an expansive one (Warthog). So far, no problem, but as I got it a few months ago, no certainty here. I'm done with Saïtek nonetheless. Yeah, they replaced the product many times without question, but their products are way too unreliable for me. If you're considering buying one, I suggest to do your research on google first : a lot of customers had troubles with these boys.

having had both the X-55 and X-56 the ideas of the joysticks are just grand. and they do work. But the build quality is just awfull. Even with moderate use they did not last as long as I'd hope. got about 9 months of service with both of them. And at a pricepoint of almost 2800NOK/250 Euro, that is just not acceptable. I got the TM Warthhog and yes.. it is more expensive than the X-56, however it last a helluva lot longer. So I would say , get the Warthog and save your cash in the long run.
