Canadian currency is something we could learn from, particularly their use of $1 and $2 coins. Most countries use them for a reason. Don't get me wrong, I love America and I generally prefer our way of doing things, but how many times have you tried to buy something from a vending machine, only to find that it refuses to take the only $1 bill in your wallet? Sometimes there isn't even anything wrong with it, the stupid machine just won't take it for whatever reason. You dig around in your pockets to see if you have enough coins to use instead. You find a nickel, two pennies, and insert cliche non-coin third item here. Nope. You're either gonna have to go get change somewhere, or if that $1 bill WAS messed up or whatever, try using a $5 bill. If the machine even accepts fives, you're stuck walking around with a pocket pull of quarters for the rest of the day. All of this for some M&Ms. Now, same scenario, but in a country that mints dollar coins. I visited Australia in 2006. While staying at one of my hotels, I decided that I wanted a Violet Crumble (an Australian candy bar that I had the opportunity to try in a History class a few years earlier), so I walked down to the vending machine. My mother had given my brother and I some walking around money, which mostly consisted of $1, $2, and $3 coins. I thought it was weird that they didn't have bills smaller than $5, but I soon discovered why. I put in my money, and made a selection. KLANG! Out came the Crumble, and then the change. I walked over the soda machine, and bought a Coca-Cola. KLANG! Out came the Coke, and the change. I collected everything, and took a couple steps back towards my room, when I paused. I looked at the small handful of change. I think maybe I got one or two coins from each purchase. I looked back at the machines. Then I realized that I at no point had to straighten out a bill, fold it in half longways, or offer a virgin sacrifice to the vending machine gods in hopes that I might actually get a cold drink on a hot day. I just thought to myself, "WHY THE HELL DON'T WE HAVE THESE?!"
