Yamaha R1 2015

Second shot in this year's superbike wars is Yamaha's brand new YZF R1. We've been waiting for the Japanese to fight back against the BMW S1000RR for a long time and the recent upgrades to the German bike have moved the goalposts even further away. Can the Yamaha claw back some of the lost ground, let alone knock the BMW off the top spot? Mat goes to Cape Town for the official South African launch at Killarney race track.

People may disagree whether it looks "pretty," but one thing is clear: a technology wise this r1 (not to mention r1m) is leading a 2015 liter bike line. It is not designed for the street. Just look at it, it screams at you: TRACK BIKE. It is lighter, smaller, it has a 6-axle gyro sensor (you do not need gyro machine to measure your lean angle in a mid corner of a local road), the fairing, subtle headlights, side-exhaust, the M version has a GPS for race track recording. This bike is all about track and lap time. So if you are planning to buy it for the street, you are buying a wrong motorcycle. I would love to see a through comparison with a 2015 s1000rr.

I don't know why people are still calling the 2009-2014 R1 the 'Big Bang' R1. That couldn't be more wrong. Look up big bang motor please. The crossplane crank actually does not fire any two pistons at the same time. It works more like a V-8. The crank's rod journals are offset 90 degrees with a firing order that isn't even. If you count in metered time from one to eight and repeat, the crossplane crank provides a firing order at 3, 5, 6, and 8 so counting --> 1..2..THREE..4..FIVE..SIX..7..EIGHT

Brian Evans We realise, but that hasn't ben't stopped it becoming KNOWN as the Big Bang R1, at least here in SA. Perhaps we should explain in more details sometime. Btw, Yamaha's people were referring to it that way as well!

New R1 is £14,999.00 and £18,499.00 for the R1M here in the UK not too sure about the new S1000RR I must look into it as a matter of interest

Interesting pricing, here in New Zealand the R1 is $27k, the S1000RR is the best part of $30k and the H2 is $36k I think. The R1M coming in at $33k the R1 here is really good value given it's specs.

Way to expensive, for the same money I would consider the 1299 Panigale which comes with DRP.. Dont get me wrong I love Yamaha... but the average Joe needs a little more than a awesome bike when paying over 200k

There ia one problem my friend is a duck nut, he just loves them ! will not buy anything but a duck. Now me i would never buy one and why? His is allways in the shop. Problems all the time it's in the shop more then on the road. And for that kind of money i want something reliable!! We had a talk and he says it's like a ferrari you have the looks but you all so have the problems. His 1199 Panigale was in the shop 9 times. Electrical problems, brake, fairings on the bottom by the exhaust melted and all so they for got to put a hole to see the oil glass, you have to take the fairings off the bike to see the oil glass, and then we have the recall problems. Now he has the 1299 i want to see how many times it goes in. we are going to make a list. Now i have had 3 r1 2001, 2007,2009 only problem on one bike was the 2009 had a few recalls main one was the cam chain tensioner. and the light need to be replaced as a recall something about heat problems. Now that is it. The 2001 and the 2007 no problems. I still have the 2009 and will keep it love the bike after i had the ECU flashed. If you do not it was to slow, after the flash it's crazy fast!. Now i am waiting for my new 2015 r1 and we will see about how many times it goes in for problems. My friend and i have a bet on who will have the most. I thin k i will win the $100.00 on the bet. I am not hateing the duck i just can't see that much money and it's in the shop more then on the road. Two more things his dash went out lucky it was under warranty, they told him it was around $800.00 . Also the gas tanks are plastic and the do not like ethanol, the tank will start to reshape (warp) from the ethanol. so you have to buy a aluminum tank and he was told just under $1000.00. Well just so you know i love all sportbikes i just can't see that much money for problems. Now i am not saying that bikes do not have problems they all do. But i think you get the picture of what i am saying. Have a great night and i hope i did not make any one mad, it's just me and my friend talking about are bikes. static age

you guys really lucky. At malaysia this bike included tax it around rm130k and above. That for r1 price. Damn tax
