Is there slavery in Islam? When people pose this question they usually assume it’s the Islam part that needs clarification. The real problem is trying to pin down what we mean by slavery. We all think we know what slavery is, but would we really know slavery if we saw it?

​@@hiddentruth1424 yes the prophet had one slave woman she was given to him a present, our mother Mariah ( May Allah be pleased with her) and he married her, and she had rights as a slave woman, what numerous "free" people nowadays don't. In this lecture prof, Jonathan was talking about the principle ideas, which if you understand you can easily draw conclusions for particular cases like the prophet's one, and in his book "slavery in Islam" he detailed on the matter. the idea of basing your morality on your feelings is the core issue that you have to revise.

In order to understand to video u must watch till the end, I will try to sum up the video, or at least what I understood of it : 1) it’s unjust to have one broad definition of slavery, there’s no way to compare the slavery that happened in the west, specially in America with the slavery that happened in Muslim world back then. While in the Muslim world, we see scholars , sultans who would be considered to be slaves, and in fact one of the must power men and women in the Muslim history were slaves, ex Sultan Kusem, sultan Hurrum, Ahmed Pash.... ( the list is so long) 2) Islam didn’t demande for a full abolition of slavery, but it ask to dry it sources, the only way someone could be a slave is through war ( and which was a necessity at the era) but beside that all the laws in Islam insist that no one is better that other, no colour is superior over an other. Finally, Islam understood that change requires time, just like Alcool weren’t forbidden from the first glance, Islam set rules to demolish slavery with time

@@hyamick7584 so my understanding is that Islam allows Muslims to take "slaves" from those that are prisoners of war instead of killing them. So Muslims are not allowed to torture or kill, but can make those prisoners work for them. I put the word slaves in quotations because a Muslim has to give the "slave" the same quality of food and clothing that the owner enjoys and a shelter. So if the Quran does not explicitly say that something is forbidden (haram), then we can't make it haram. Therefore if war isn't something that has ended, then how could the potential for slavery? That being said, even the details of the war have to met in order for "slaves" to be taken. Im not entirely sure what the prerequisites are but I've heard there has to be a caliph. What im trying to figure out is if Jonathans lecture is based in fact or more of a reactionary interpretation to the moral standards of our time. Hope that helps.

Slavery is legal in Islam, and it is not Haram (forbidden) or even Makhruh (despised), but Halal (permissible). Slaves can be captured through war, which is fair, because they are the enemy. This is better than what the US does (see Abu Ghraib, Baghram, etc.) However, they cannot be civilians, ie only POWs. Although Muslim apologists try to explain it away by saying it was supposedly supposed to be gradually done away with, there is little evidence to suggest this, other than a general encouragement of freeing slaves. Slaves must be given free food, healthcare, clothing, and shelter, equivalent to what their owner gets for themselves. Slaves cannot be overworked, beaten, mistreated, etc. They cannot be prevented from other normal activities like marriage. Essentially, the labor shifts from government welfare subsidization to private ownership and subject to market rates. This is as so to prevent the tax money being spent on POWs, akin to how the world's governments are wasting money on useless people. Muslim empires of the past followed the rules to some degree depending on leadership, but like most nations, they sought wealth over the law, and thus the Arab Slave Trade and such resulted in many innocent people having become slaves, with lower levels of rights. The Rashidun Caliphate, however, was the earliest and adhered most closely to the original teachings.

You sound like an educated person why don't you yourself study the biography of the prophet, Martin Ling's is the best. By the way Bible clearly talks about enslaving young girls, when talking about Amalakites. It ordered the killing of women, infants, cattles and orders the attackers to keep the unmarried girls for themselves. I think you have also not read all of the bible to see these verses and many other verses.

Much more important than the abolition of slavery is the justices and equality. The face to the final triumph of Islam when Mohamed defeated Macca was a Black Slave named Bilal standing on the top Kabba the most secret place for Arabia and Muslims basically accounting that Humans are the holiest being on earth and a black slave represented the human race. Even when Muhamad entered the Kabba he choose Bilal and Osama another dark skin and the son of servant. The last thing Mohamed said in his major speech to Muslims in Hajj “There are no difference between black and white or Arab and other races or a man and a woman but their deeds toward God”. That is why you can hardly find a block person killed because he was black through out Muslims history but we still seeing black being killed just because they are black in the western countries the most free places in world. Abolition of slavery means nothing without serious and sincere abolition of racism. Muhamad made sure abolition of racism is core concept of being a Muslim and that what the west cannot accomplish until now even when full abolition of slavery is achieved. It is much harder to achieve abolition of racism.

I listened to Dr.Brown's lecture and while I appreciate his intention to explain abhorrent practices in history as cultural constructs, I cannot help interpreting his arguments as moral relativism. There is no dispute that slavery has existed in all ancient cultures with a range of explanations ( no prisons so prisoners were used as slaves in a multitude of ways). However I think there is a universal value that transcends historical facts; and that is the condemnation of slavery as a moral imperative. One argument can be made that history ( and yes , this includes Islamic history) was never written from the perspective of the oppressed and enslaved thereby neglecting the accounts of persecuted . I am not debating that Islam as an organized religious movement changed the harsh treatment of those oppressed. It is well documented ( i.e.: Bilal) Dr.Brown's perspective never elaborates on the condemnation of slavery as a moral imperative only as a cultural construct we should understand. One has to question who the teller of history is and what constitutes morality more importantly. Perhaps Dr. Brown's lecture would be understood better by me if I understood from which school of Islamic theology his thoughts derive. But that is an entirely different discussion and one far too detailed to write about here. Thank you for letting me comment on such a thought provoking subject.

Ok that's fine, we accept slavery as a moral wrong. Now can we all agree that having kids out of wedlock is a universal moral wrong. Bringing children into the world without one or even both parents is criminal. Today we call this "freedom of choice to do what I want" and it's culturally accepted, but the social impacts of unwated kids getting dumped on the streets is really, really bad. One could say, universally and morally wrong.

Good day. I am not exactly sure in what context ( in regard to Dr. Brown's lecture) you make this argument but if it is from a purely sociological perspective, one could try to understand the following. 1. A modern prison system that disproportionately incarcerates one population ( and since the original subject is slavery in Islam, I will elaborate on the race issue), that population is comprised mostly of an afro american, afro pan american. population and I am making reference to black males although the incarceration rate for black females is also high. I think a current statistic overall is 1 in 5 incarcerated is black currently in the U.S. One has to interpret a population already economically disadvantaged in terms of wealth disparities and education opportunities to be further exacerbated by this ridiculously high incarceration rate, thereby distorting any community life much less family structures of nuclear family standards of 2 parents living with children. I would add ( no statistcs here) that extended family relationships might even be stronger in such a population where families may depend on aunts and grandparents to be participating in the raising of children, compared with white families . 2. The legacy of slavery in the Americas has been so brutal we can understand how the fallout of the horrors of separating families by slave owners on plantations and the migration north post reconstruction had to play a huge role in family structures moving forward from that horrific legacy. I am not a scholar but I am sure there is data on this. Of course I could continue making many more arguments regarding your dismissal that black families do not subscribe to what you find an acceptable family structure in which to raise children but time and space limit my ability to make that argument here. I will however note that the divorce rate in the US is somewhere around 47% and white families are no great examples of so called " intact family structures " that u imply are needed to raise " healthy" children.

​@@lynnrosadudani529 ​It's to show how some readily accepted cultural norms today are really morally disgusting, but since it's widely accepted no one feels bad about it. My point wasn't about black families, but American culture as a whole. All the points you make are valid and real consequences of the fallout of banning slavery in name, but not attacking the root racism that enabled the brutality of the slavery. I do not think any Muslim, with a holistic understanding of Islam, would advocate for slavery today, and good riddance to it. The systematic oppression of the African American community in the USA is something that is truly unjust, and Muslims stand in solidarity with them. The legacy of Malcolm X, who did not believe that white people and black people could ever live in harmony together, changed completely when he went to Mecca and found people of all races, all ethnicity, all backgrounds coming together to worship a common lord. Eradicating racism is possible, but it must be a generational change and a focus on anti-racism.

Since we believe Allah is infinity just, and seeing that there is little to no justice on earth, there must be an afterlife where everyone and everything that happened will be reviewed. I knew about the differences in slavery but the way it was presented by Dr Brown is a masterpiece. I still couldn't share this video with my black friends even the examples of slavery in the islamic world had radically opposite fates to those in the West (the famous Sinan was a slave. It doesn't make much sense in the the way slave is understood now.)

Children of masters being free and having the 'same status' as other children of the household is in the Bible as well, the example that comes to mind is Ishmael the son of Abraham and Hagar the Egyptian slave.

I waited a long time for the conference to start. It barely starts at 49 minutes... nope. The title being Slavery in islam, i expected something else then snot drinking is bad but for some it is not, everybody had slaves, women covering their heads, morality is subjective etc. It really starts at 53'35. "I won't say Islam is da best for slaves"... but Islam is da best for slaves, ever ! He forgot to mention slavery lasted 13-14 centuries without any sign of stopping. New slave routes were created, millions of Africans murdered, enslaved, mutilated, raped... But at least they had "protection". He is defending his faith, not history.

How difficult is to define freedom?? It is not relative concept and one can define it across time and space. "Major routes of slavery were prohibited in Islam and its not in Quran and Hadith and its just understood" at least be honest about what you saying. I feel like this is more of an American problem. For the rest of the world, especially here in Africa, we have a real understanding of slavery. What Americans had was not slavery, that was something else. In Africa we are obligated to enforce manual labour, because there are not enough jobs to automate some form of work that could be done by multiple people at a very cheap rate. People are paid a little, they have to move away from home and often, they are forced to live with their employer because it's not worth travelling back home. It's sounds a lot like some form of slavery, but the difference is, people are respected and they are not mistreated because of their race.

I once read a book in English, it extrapolates that my great great great grandparents used to sit waiting outside the house of White people to ask them for a job. The job can be vary, gardening, driving around the madam or the lords, cleaning the house etc. And the book describes how the White people eventually fed up and hired one of my great great grandparents even they didn't need one. It was a form of consensual slavery in modern definition. Because they tended to stay in the house, paid with minimal wage. Even some of women become the Lords' concubines but she doesn't have legal right of the children. However my guess is working with White people in colonialism time gave them status they desired.

The janissaries were at first christian children raised to be Muslim and the elite personal troops of the Sultan. Later on Muslims themselves started joining and the devshirme practice (taking of children) was banned. The janissaries despite being technically being 'slaves' were among the more privileged in society with their education, place in society and social mobility. They became powerful enough to often demand bigger and bigger salaries when a new sultans came to power (yes they were paid despite being slaves) and often overthrew and killed sultans who tried to lower their power. They were slaves in that they werent allowed to stop being janissaries but they were nothing like say the slaves that worked plantations in america.

How would you like if if a family member of yours was enslaved in the same manner. In the Old Testament, there is also considerable apprehension to making Hebrews slaves. Foreigners could easily be bought as slaves, but Israelites could only be subjected to debt slavery for a fixed period. Jonathan Brown could not even bring himself to say Muslims contributing to the transatlantic slave trade was wrong in the case of non Muslims being trafficked. Its nice that some of the audience questions were sharp witted and I doubt they were very satisfied with his answers.

But Muslims didn't contribute to the Atlantic slave trade. Many of those slaves were Muslims! So it did happen to the Muslims. Let's not forget Africans had war captives as well that they captured from going to war with other tribes. They sold many of those war captives to those Europeans. Of course we know that Africans weren't treating their war captives like the Europeans were treating the Africans they enslaved. But even Africans had war captives. So as he said in this video Africans were wrong as well. We also know that when the Africans found out what the Europeans were doing with the war captives they sold to them they refused to sell them anymore war captives and then Europeans left came back with the Spaniards and enslaved Africans and colonized Africa. Islam is a universal religion, applicable to every place & time since the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Thus, in periods of time where slavery is necessary, but since it is a wide concept, Islam comes to limit it & restrict it, to one specific form that minimizes harm, and encourages the generous act of freeing slaves. There is one page (not a book) that did more for prohibiting slavery than all religious books combined. It starts like this: "All humans are created equal"… So basically, humans as failable as they can be, nowadays, have much higher humanist standards than any religious book. You mean he could order many rules to humans except this one? Why? Is there anything worse than owning another human being? Number 2, there are no steps to prohibit slavery in Islam. Having steps means that there is an end result. Islam never ended slavery. The book was finished with slavery staying legal. Unless you think there is another version of Islam coming again, slavery is settled in Islam, it is legal and it has very specific laws as to how to buy/sell another human being, under which conditions you will punish this human being, how to fornicate with that other human being even without consent and so on... there is nothing mentioning a prohibition at any point in the past or in the future... As a matter of fact, slavery markets were thriving in Saudi Arabia until the fifties... and they were removed only because of the United Nations pressure. That alone tells you all you need to know about Islam and Slavery.
