The whole gift thing irritates me so much. You wouldn't go up to some stranger who you see is giving a gift to their friend and be like "oh well...they got a gift...can I get a gift too?" Common sense isn't common with such people.

I think it bleeds from the school mentality of "you've got to bring enough for everyone or you can't share with anyone", because I remember being in grade school and if you gave something to a friend you had to have enough for the whole class or it "wasn't fair" well that's life, lol. Not everybody gets things just for existing, and people take advantage of that mentality, unfortunately...

To be fair, it's terminology that is only used by professional artists and some of the terms aren't particularly intuitive. Speaking of which, what's the distinction between a request and a gift? That a gift is created by the artist without being asked to and given away for free and a request is the same but a commissioner has asked (*cough* begged *cough*) for it to be made for free?

My mom commissioned me and she was super friendly and great about it. But when I reminded her how much it was (it was earrings so I asked in person as I gave them to her), my family was around me and they later chastised me for making her pay...They said stuff like, "She's your mom. Give to her for free!" "I can't believe you would make her pay for that!" Um, no. Just because you're related to me or are my friend doesn't mean you will get free jewelry or sculptures from me whenever you want it. If I want to give something away as a gift, that's my right to do with my skill and materials/time, but I can also just tell you no. And the best part is my mom actually said in the same text message she asked me for the earrings, "Don't worry, I'll pay you for it. How much will it be?"
@mollysministuff

Personally, I would never demand a close relative to pay for something I made (I make earrings and sculptures too! :) ). But if they're willing and want to, I don't think you should be criticized for having her pay.

When I finished college (bachelor of science in architecture), our relatives just expected me that I draw them their vacation house for free (these relatives are those show-off people who only visit us during holidays and talk about themselves and their cars and trips to other countries), they already gave me the size of the land and everything but lol, I'm never gonna do that shyt XD (sadly even my parents encourages them since they're a bit of a kiss-ass). (But I'm currently working on my grandparents mausoleum for free because its just small and simple and I love them)

One artist I knew got a message from some kid asking for art. They said they could link them to commissions, but this kid asked why he couldn't have it for free. They explained it took time and effort when they could be doing other work for school and such. The kid then continued to guilt trip them, saying that his brother was dying of lung cancer and wanted art from her to make him feel better. When she said she was sorry to hear that his brother was so ill, but refused to draw art for free and suggested that other artists may be taking requests and to have a look around, he said: 'IF MY BROTHER DIES, IT'S YOUR FAULT. YOU KILLED HIM." And when I heard about this, it disgusted me that someone would use that as a way to scrounge for free art.

I think a big problem with selling commissions on deviant and places like that is that a lot of the people are young kids. They don’t understand the value of work and of money because when they want something their parents just pull out a credit card. I think kids need to be taught at a younger age the value of work, especially art because people often don’t recognize the work that goes into it.

I'm not complrtley sure if this counts as a scam, but it was really shitty. Okay so, I make fursuits and fursuit parts. I never really get commissions so I get kinda loose in terms of shipping costs, like I'll often wait for the person to pay shipping as long as they pay the cost for the part. This one person commissioned me on Etsy for a pair of feetpaws and they lived in like, Iran or something, and I said from the beginning "Hey you have to pay a little more for shipping, is that okay?" And they said yes. I asked multiple times, making it clear as day thoughout the process if you can pay extra and they kept saying "Yeah I can pay extra" and the moment comes, I make a beautiful pair of feetpaws I went to the post office to check how much it would cost to send, I told them the price and they said "Oh I can't pay for shipping." . . . . EXCUSE ME?? I messaged them more asking them why they said they could pay when they couldn't and no response. Well I guess someone else gets the feetpaws. I no longer do commissions with anyone outside the U.S. now unless I know them and I know they'll pay extra.

I know this was a whole two years ago but you can require people pay you either the total cost upfront or have them pay you a %50 non-refundable deposit (once you start) upfront. Edit: and when you use PayPal send them an invoice. Do not accept money from them any other way. That way it's harder for them to go back and say "Oh I accidentally sent that!" It's harder to accidentally accept an invoice.

Yeah I dun goofed on one of my first commissions. It was a “friend” (who is also an artists) who asked me like “hey could you draw 4 characters” and I was like sure pick a price. Than she said 8 flippin dollars. For 4 full body characters. Now my art is no where near good or perfect lol but 8 dollars! I didn’t know what my commissions were worth and I also had a horrible opinion of my art lol. So I asked for 10 she said ok. I thought well she’s a friend it’s ok... (it’s not! Anyone commissioning do not let people use you lol) and she never payed me my 10 dollars but she has pictures of all of them (another mistake) I don’t do constant commissions (like I did my 3 yesterday lol I’m a huge newb) but that was the first lol. so don’t let people see the art before your payed or price yourself extremely low cause they’re a “friend.” And I can promise you after countless attempts to get the money at school it has not worked lol. I did a commission for a friend yesterday with 3 characters and a background and she gave me 30$ while I think that’s a little pricey lol cause I still don’t really love my art. I realize 8 dollars is just not enough. So really look at your art and found out a price you’re comfortable with.

I just discovered this video and holy crap- As an artist who is JUST getting okay with my own art to the point of doing commissions and everything- this TERRIFiES ME! On the last story about the inflation kink thing- when I was 13-14 years old, I was doing requests on DA and I was desperate for just ANY ideas, ANY way to get better.. the first few were awesome! Mermaids or pirates or a Gemsona in this super cool fighting stance! Heck yea! Then I had a 35 year old man PM me... and asked me... for the male counterparts of the power puff girls... force-feeding the power puff girls.. to the point of being huge... I panicked and deleted my account because he’d harass me non-stop about doing really disgusting works, when my account explicitly said I was only a kid... to this day, I flinch away from requests

On DA I think they might have the option to send the money to a bank account instead of PayPal. Just use the commission widget and have them pay through the widget (if they pay through the widget, you can change the points into real money). I might be wrong about the bank thing, though. I dunno.

I honestly hate scammers. Both artists and commissionees (or whatever the word is lol). I know no one whats to hear this little story, but yeah. Here we go: A close friend of mine commissioned me for *HIS* friend, and since I'd known him for a few years, I was like: "Okay, you can pay me soon." So I went ahead and did the piece within 3 hours. It was just a casual two characters, shaded, no background. I gave it to him, and two months later..no pay. I ask him about it and he said: "I get paid next Friday." So okay..I wait. Nothing in my paypal and keep in mind that he's had the email linked to my account to pay me... So he kept showing me commissions that he had to pay up for, and I finally snapped and told him that he was supposed to pay me and that he never did.....So I just stopped talking to him, and I never do commissions without being paid upfront. Unless of course, it's a close friend whom I KNOW is going to pay within a week or so.

Tip: Write the value in points. If you have an adoptable up for 20 dollars write either: $20 = 2000 points (or if you choose to use 1600 points instead) Or $1 = 100 points (or if you choose to use 80 points instead)

I hear you on that! I have a trusted commissioner list and I allot them a "credit" balance I keep tabs on via google docs, and they have a week to pay off the balance, but they can use as much of that credit balance as they like, because they order consistently, and ALWAYS pay off their tab.

I’ve been scammed once, I think the best thing to do is tell beginners the signs so they know what to look out for. While they do change from person to person it’s still something to be aware of. My best tip is if the mode of conversation you’re using shows when they’ve checked your message, see how long it takes them to respond. If it’s more than a day, I’d skip the commission. Another one is when you’re talking with someone and they just drop the conversation and then start it up again as though you didn’t ask them something last message. If they’ll randomly drop a conversation where money isn’t involved, what’s to stop when it is. But that’s just from my own experience.

As much as hearing these stories breaks my heart, I find them really helpful. Not only just as an artist, but also as a *buyer*. As someone a bit new to commissioning people, I am definitely learning about what alarms people and how to avoid being a major jerk to them accidentally. I'm always freaking nervous that i'm being rude or not doing it right, so I'm glad I'm hearing the do's and don't's of this~ Great video as always~!

I'm so grateful I was able to skip over all this sort of stuff by coming in a bit later, and having experienced artists to follow example from. I can't imagine people pulling the kind of shit you talked about, and I'm super happy your in a good enough place now to share your stories, and act as a speaker of caution to younger artists who are at high risk of falling for scams. I knew there were bad people out there, but god damn! That YCH story- what the hell?

I know the feels of the emergency commissions thing. I'm probably gonna have to do the same thing soon, my grandfather recently passed away, and he was literally paying for everything I needed in my life. Food, the bills, water, everything. And i'm completely lost without him. It doesn't help that his son who hasn't even spoken to him in 25+ years is now trying to take everything I have left of him from me, including my home. Money brings out the absolute worst in people.

First things first: Your art is freaking amazing. I love watching your stuff and you've been one of my biggest inspirations on here, ngl. Anyway, I can't believe how awful some people are. These videos of yours are really helpful to people like me who are starting out and considering doing commissions. It's good to know what kinds of things may happen and what to watch out for. I'm so sorry people have done you that way - especially that last story, just what a horrendous person! But thank you for making your videos like these. Seriously, they're greatly helpful and eye opening.

I love your art! It is truly amazing! Good job! Don't let *IDIOTS* get to you... I don't do commissions because of tracing/stealing a piece, but if I am just on a bench drawing people will try to make me draw them for free... But don't let people like that get you down!

Personally I feel like the safest bet is taking half payment upfront, and then the other half upon completion. That way you find out right off the bat if they intend on actually paying you, and even if they bail on paying for the completed piece, you at least made something for your troubles. I never really liked the idea of paying the whole price upfront, because I've commissioned an artist like that and after paying, I never received my art and after waiting a few extra weeks to give them the benefit of the doubt, they just disappeared. @_@ It just seems like paying half now, half later is the best way to avoid abuse/scamming by either party.

I think you make some excellent points in your video about the shitty people you have to deal with when doing commissions. I opened commissions to my followers online recently and I had the deal with a 12 year old who didn't seem to understand that art commissions are items being sold, not things to bargain for. When she finally agreed to pay me, I sent her the PayPal request for the payment and she then proceeded to ignore it and demanded to see the finished product. When I told her I had to be paid first, she got angry at me and then claimed that she paid it (She didn't, to nobody's surprise) and asked for the finished piece again. This continued on for about a week until I eventually got so fed up with her trying to weasel her way out of paying, I just said I wouldn't do the commission anymore. She asked me for a refund that I couldn't give because she never paid me and she is now blocked from my art account because I don't have time for people trying to get free art out of me when I specifically state that I do commissions, not requests 90% of the time. okay, rant over, I hope everyone doing commissions in this comment section has a wonderful customer and gets paid fairly for their art

I love how you grabbed the color palette, I never thought of doing that and I'll def think into it next time I'm designing a character! As for the content itself...yikes. Its exactly why I'm hesitant to do commissions, I've always underpriced myself (less than a single dollar) and now I'm far more confident in my art skill and want to raise my prices.. but I know some people will find my stuff too expensive so I just.. don't do it lmao.

Preach! I had to learn the hard way to make people pay half up front for commissions! I've had a lot of people back out or ghost me mid project, despite the fact that I make it very clear what it will cost before I start any work. I've also had the issue of having to tell people no when they ask for ludicrous changes to art that is finished, things that could have easily been done during the sketch phase. Most of my experiences have been good, but the few bad apples always get my blood to boil.

I used to do requests all the time. It made me happy that people liked my work enough to want me to draw for them. I was like 13/14 and my art was crap. But because of the requests, I drew so much that my style steadily improved. I've never opened commissions before so I don't have these sort of stories but I do remember a few people I did requests for. I went to their account and their favorites was just full of requests of the characters they asked me to draw.

I do characters for this RP/game I’m doing where these random people will enter I draw their characters and they play, (I enjoy it) but sometimes they will completely take advantage of that, they’ll complain if their character isn’t drawn in every scene, they’ll want a new redesign every week, it sucks but we all manage 😅.
