Marik can use mind control, Bakura can steal your soul, Pegasus can read your mind, Atem can trap you in a hallucination for the rest of your life... You need something to distract these psychos or they'll mess you up.

Atem just has the ability for fate to cheat on his behalf every time there's a chance he might lose a game. This is why he was cool with everything going over to a children's card game: his ability to topdeck any card in his deck whenever he needed it was the most consistent way to auto win possible with his shoddily constructed main deck toolbox barely any extra deck deck.
